Arthur “Jim” Handke Jr., 60, of Elkader, died Friday, March 26, 2004, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, following a sudden illness. Art “Jim” was born icon June 27, 1943, to Arthur and Lorine (Schultz) Handke at Colesburg. He attended school through the eighth grade in the Guttenberg-Millville area. Art was united in marriage to Linda Peuker on June 18, 1966, at Hope Lutheran Church in Littleport. Two children were born icon to this union. For the past 40 years, he worked their farm in the Motor Mill area. Jim was an avid outdoors man, who enjoyed spending time with family and friends, farm life and all of its animals. He is survived by his wife, Linda, his son, James Handke, Elkader and his daughter, Paula (Bob) Hansel, Elkader; one special granddaughter, Samantha Hansel, Elkader; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Handke Sr, Littleport; five sisters, Verna Johanningmeier, Waterville, Shirley (Ray) Williams, Elkader, Sue (Dayton) Miller, Guttenberg, Sandy (Allen) Clouse, Dyersville, Patty (Lonny) Amsden, Littleport; two brothers, Bill Handke, Littleport, Robert (Betty) Handke, Monona and many nieces and nephews. Art was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Handke.

Gilbert Haven Wiethorn Jr.

Gilbert Haven Wiethorn Jr., 74, Monona, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at Veteran’s Memorial Hospital, Waukon following a long illness. He was born icon on January 2, 1930, on the family farm, rural McGregor, to Gilbert Haven Sr. and Clara (Fett) Wiethorn. He attended Cooper Valley County School through eighth grade. On August 3, 1950, he was united in marriage to Ednah Mae Moose at the Methodist Church in Monona. One daughter was born icon to this union. Gilbert and Ednah farmed until retirement in 1991 and moved to Monona in 1999, where they were members of Garden City United Methodist Church. Gilbert loved spending time with family and friends, hunting, fishing, the outdoors and watching wildlife. Survivors include his wife, Ednah Wiethorn, Monona; a daughter, Sheryl (Robert) Moses, Monona; three grandchildren, James (Sherrod) Moses, Eureka, IL, Lori (Jared) Cagley, Waterloo, Lisa Moses, Monona and many nieces and nephews. Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister-in-law, Wilbert and Gretchen Wiethorn.

Arthur Leo Kramer Jr. 92, of Oelwein, formerly of Elkader, died Thursday, March 18, 2004, in Mercy Hospital of Oelwein, Oelwein, IA, following a brief illness. He was born icon December 15, 1911, in Elkader to Arthur and Effie (Boots) Kramer Sr. They lived on a homestead near Hugo, CO until Arthur was thirteen years old. They moved back to Elkader where he graduated from Elkader High School. While in high school and as a young man, Arthur enjoyed sports such as football, baseball, wrestling and basketball. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Jane “Betty” McLaughlin on June 11, 1939, at the Methodist church in Jesup, IA. Arthur entered the U.S. Navy during WW II in 1942. He served to the 3rd Marine Division. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He worked in the South Pacific, Guam, Gaudacanal, Saipan and Bougainville with the SeaBees assigned for Clayton County, Buchanan County, City of Independence and the State of Iowa. He was a Civil Engineer for the United States Bureau of Reclamation for thirty years. He worked on the construction of dams, canals, tunnels and highways throughout the west. He retired to Roseville, CA and then to Oelwein. He was a member of the Masons for fifty years. Arthur is survived by his wife Betty Kramer, Oelwein, his children, Kathy (Steve) Herbst, Folsom, CA and Ronald Kramer, Omak, WA; three grandchildren, Lisa Lockart, Ronald V. Kramer and Erika Adell; five great-grandchildren, Cody, Lauren, Kaelan, Alexander and Luke Arthur and a sister, Katherine McCormick, Elkader. His parents preceded him in death. Memorials may be directed to Mercy Hospital of Oelwein, Oelwein, IA.

Elmer Henry Wagner, 82, of Monona died Monday, March 15, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville following a long illness. He was born icon in McGregor on September 15, 1921, to Henry and Malinda (Fritz) Wagner. He graduated from Monona High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II from May 5, 1945 to March 17, 1946, when he was Honorably Discharged. On September 27, 1945, he was united in marriage to Melva Nading at St. Paul Parsonage in Monona. Two children were born icon to this union. Elmer farmed his entire life until his retirement in 1981. He loved to spend time with family and friends, garden, motorcycling, playing cards, baking, traveling. He wintered in Texas for many years. Survivors include his two children, Allen Wagner, Monona and Wendy (Mike) Bentien, Monona; five grandchildren, Katie Wagner, Urbana, Megan Wagner, Decorah, Heidi (Dan) Pierce, Potosi, WI, Michelle (Keith) Hyman, Greene, Sharon (Brian) Harms, Cedar Rapids; five great-grandchildren; Zory, Brandon, Angelyn, Caitlin, Kedric and one sister, Margaret Nelson, McGregor. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents and his wife on December 5, 1984.

Constance J. “Connie” Eaton, 69, Elkader, died Friday, March 12, 2004, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, following a long illness. She was born icon on March 13, 1934, in Cresco, IA to Melvin and Delia (Seim) Daily. Connie graduated from Cresco High School. She was baptized on March 13, 1939, and confirmed on April 2, 1944 at the First Congregational Church in Cresco. She was united in marriage to Charles Irwin Eaton on April 3, 1955 in Cresco. Three children were born icon to this union. They made their home in Elkader, where Connie worked as a secretary for Farm Service for several years. She worked as a secretary for Clayton County Farm Bureau for eighteen years, until her retirement. She was a member of Eastern Star for many years. Connie was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church and its various women’s groups. She will be remembered as one who would take care of her neighbors and spent time looking out for others. Attending all family gatherings including their sporting events was very important to her. She loved going for a walk with her special friend, Tina. She collected humming birds, angels, mice and hugs! Connie was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She is survived by her husband, Chuck Eaton, Elkader; her children, Chuck (Janis) Eaton, Jr., Elkader, Lori (Monty) Burns, Elkader and Brett (Suann) Eaton, Elkader; and nine grandchildren, Michelle and Michael Eaton, Emily and Elizabeth Cordes, Christopher, Kyle and Kendra Burns and Nathan and Danielle Eaton. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Jane Bauer and three brothers, Myron Daily and two in infancy.

Ronald D. “Bud” Smock, 68, of Elkader, formerly of Edgewood, died Monday night, March 8, 2004 at the Edgewood Convalescent Home following an extended illness. He was born icon November 3, 1935, in Greeley to Russell and Edna (Tyrrell) Smock. He graduated from Greeley High School in 1953. Bud spent twenty years in the United States Navy, and was honorably discharged in 1974. He was united in marriage to Brenda Martin on February 14, 1968 in Mexico. After returning home from the service, they resided in Edgewood, where he worked for Merten Miller Construction. In 1995, they moved to Elkader, where he worked in maintenance for Central Community Hospital. He was a member of the Edgewood American Legion. Survivors include his wife Brenda Smock, Elkader; five sisters, Lois (Burton) Kruger, Edgewood, Jayne (Merten) Miller, Edgewood, Eva Jeanne (George) Brecht, Walker, Audrey (Ambrose) Loecke, Edgewood, Joyce (Gary) Barnhart, Greeley; a brother, Val (Carolyn) Smock, Longwood, FL and a sister-in-law, Mary Smock, Edgewood.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard Smock.
