Margaret G. Besler was born
on September 10, 1917, at Delhi, Iowa to John E. and Nellie A. (Goldsmith) McElmeel. She was united in marriage to John Besler in 1944 and six children were born
to this union. They farmed in the Masonville area, moved to Manchester and were later divorced. Margaret worked at the Plantation Inn, Manchester Country Club, St. Mary’s Rectory, and Delaware County Human Services until retirement. Margaret died on Sunday, March 7, 2004 at her home in Manchester, following a sudden illness. She was eighty-six years of age. Margaret is survived by her six children, John Besler of Manchester, Connie (Gary) Cooper of Cedar Rapids, Diane (Paul) Mesch of Manchester, Dan Besler of Delhi, Dennis (Emmy) Besler of Manchester, and Ronald (Mary) Besler of Boone; thirteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; her twin sister, Mildred (Robert) Hunter of Waverly, Minnesota, and Bernadette Smith of Dyersville. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Justin McElmeel, three sisters, Luceil McElmeel, Mary Nolan, and Gertrude Estling.
She attended school in the area, graduating from Delhi High School in 1936.
She was a life-long member of St. Mary’s Catholic church, loved and enjoyed her family and cooking.

Beatrice Flavia Huinker Schissel, 95, of Monona, IA, died Thursday, March 4, 2004, at the Ossian Senior Hospice, Ossian, following a brief illness. She was born
on November 15, 1908, at Festina to Joseph and Johanna (Braun) Huinker. She attended Catholic School in Festina through the eighth grade. On June 26, 1928, Bea was united in marriage to Leonard Schissel in Festina. Fr. Ruby presided over the wedding. Bea and Leonard were blessed with two children. They lived with Leonard’s parents in Ft. Atkinson their first year of marriage, then moved to Carroll County in western Iowa and returned to Monona in 1949, when they started the Culligan Soft Water Service in Clayton County. Bea was a homemaker who enjoyed being with her family. She took care of her sisters (Burga) children following her sister’s death. She joined the Catholic Daughter of America at age of twenty years, and was a member since 1928. Bea was a member of the Archdiocese Council for Catholic Women (ACCW), Archdiocese of Dubuque Council, where she served as treasurer for one term. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Rosary Society since 1948. Bea was a member of the Monona Garden Club for forty years, from 1950 through the 90’s, serving as president for one year. She also was a member of the Better Homemakers Club of Monona. She was recognized as State of Iowa “Farmer’s Wife of the Year” during World War II. She served as Woman’s Chairman of the Carroll County Farm Bureau, where she also enjoyed being a member of the Farm Bureau Chorus. Bea enjoyed being a senior citizen volunteer, delivering meals on wheels in Monona. Bea received the Iowa Governor’s Award for “Senior Volunteer of the Year”. Survivors include her son Lawrence (Royanne), Santa Fe, NM; son-in-law, Gerald Hawes, Harpers Ferry; four grandchildren, David Schissel, Aindrea Schissel, Christopher Hawes, Shawn Marie Hawes; two great-grandchildren, Donovan and Trevor Schissel; sister, Viola Tessmer, Calmar, sisters-in-law, Rose Huinker, Oelwein and Edna Huinker, Dubuque and numerous nieces and nephews. Bea was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1990, daughter, Mary Ann Hawes on November 5, 1984; brothers, Arnold Huinker, St Lucas, Edmund Huinker, Calmar, Alfred Huinker, Monona, Leo Huinker, Calmar, Oscar Huinker, Oelwein, Victor Huinker, McGregor, Gregory Huinker, Ossian; and sisters Walburga Zwiebohmer, Calmar and Albina Schneberger, Calmar.

Lorraine D. “Tootie” Klingeman, 87, of Monona, died March 3, 2004, at the Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien, WI. She was born
January 1, 1917, on a farm near Monona, to Louis and Adeline (Blietz) Steiert. She attended St. Patrick’s School in Monona and graduated from the Monona High School in 1934. She was united in marriage to Woodrow E. Klingeman on May 6, 1946. In 1941, Lorraine began a long career in the restaurant business in Monona, beginning at the McDonald’s Café, retiring in 1985 when the Grand Café closed. She enjoyed cooking, reading and nature. Survivors include her husband, Woodrow Klingeman, Monona; her daughter, Mary and husband Wayne Johnson, Las Vegas, NV; her son, Br. David Klingeman, O.S.B., Collegeville, MN; grandchildren, Michelle and husband Brian Beaudion and Timothy Johnson and his fiancé Michelle Vouers and loving nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Leo and Msgr. Gerald Steiert.

Lowell Lee Hageman 87, of Colesburg passed away March 2, 2004, at the Guttenberg Care Center after a lingering illness. As per Lowell’s wishes, he will be cremated. Lowell was born
May 13, 1916, to Albert and Bertha (Hansel) Hageman at Elkport. He received his education in the Elkport/Garber area. He was united in marriage to Wilma Debes. He was especially proud of being a World War II Veteran and serving under General George Patton. After his tour of duty in the service was completed, they lived in the Strawberry Point and Colesburg areas and he was employed as a transportation driver for several years. Survivors include two daughters, Sheryl (Raymond) Heyer of Cedar Rapids, and Mayris Myers of El Paso, Texas; five grandchildren, Steven (Kathleen) Heyer of Cedar Rapids, Brett (Barbara) Kleppe of Madison, Wisconsin, Kelli (Michael) Becker of El Paso, Texas, Brian (Michelle) Kleppe of Richland Center, Wisconsin, Trevor Horkheimer of El Paso, Texas; six great-grandchildren, Benjaman, Kathryn, Meleah, Ashley, Mikaela, and Chelsey; two sisters, Fern Furgeson of Colesburg, and Bernice (Harlan)Holthaus of Strawberry Point; several nieces, nephews, and friends. Lowell was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Wilma in 1988; son-in-law Charles Myers; and brother-in-law, Dale Furgeson.

September 11, 1918, in rural Clayton County to Hanford and Alice (Haltmeyer) Knudson. She graduated from Farmersburg High School and attended Normal School at Cedar Falls for one year. Dorothy taught country school near St. Olaf until her marriage. She was united in marriage to Robert Kaiser Corlett on June 14, 1941. Three children were born
to this union. Dorothy was a 4-H leader, avid reader and a long-time member of St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, IA. She worked in the Clerk of Court office until her retirement. Survivors include her children, Susan (Roger) Hadley, Forest City, IA, Gail (William) Trueba, Mountain Home, ID, Todd (Jan) Corlett, Cheney, WA; five grandchildren, Sarah (Michael) Ray, Ann Arbor, MI, Christopher Hadley, Boone, IA, Stefanie Corlett, Guttenberg, IA, Robert Corlett, Guttenberg, Isabelle Corlett, Cheney, WA; two great-grandchildren and two sisters, Marjorie Corlett, Farmersburg, IA and Norma (M.J.) Moore, Riceville, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband in May, 1971.

Josie Mayleen Perkins Krambeer, 88, died Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, IA following a long illness. Josie was born
on November 15, 1915, in Liscomb, IA to Ole J. and Mabel (Small) Ferkin. She was united in marriage to Jack Perkins on May 15, 1935. Four children were born
to this union. Josie worked as chief telephone operator for N.E. Iowa Telephone Company in Luana for eight years until the company switched to dial in 1962. On November 4, 1962, she married Robert Krambeer. Josie’s passions were her family, friends, crocheting, playing cards, bingo, triomino’s and her hot peppers! Robert and Josie worked hard at Krambeer’s Construction Company in Monona. They retired and spent twenty-seven winters in Yuma, AZ, which they both loved dearly. Survivors include her children, Jack (Rosie) Perkins, Camden, AL, Larry (Karolyn) Perkins, Chino Valley, AZ, Beverly (Walter) Phillips, Des Moines and JoAnn (Jim) Klein, Cherokee Village, AR; twelve grandchildren twenty-two great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, a brother, Arthur Ferkin, Whittier, CA and sister Mayme Ringis, Rosemead, CA. Josie was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, sister, Maureen Burger, brother, Otis Ferkin and a great grandchild.
