Kenneth Eugene Bergan, 69, of Edgewood, died Monday night, March 1, 2004, at the Guttenberg Muncipal Hospital following a long illness. He was born
on October 11, 1934, in Arlington, IA, to Leo and Anna (Dempster) Bergan. He graduated from Strawberry Point High School in 1952. He was in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956 and worked for Welterlen Ford from 1956 to 1964. He was united in marriage to Jeanette “Jan” (Jaeger) on June 6, 1964, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Holy Cross, IA. Kenneth worked in the Edgewood Post Office from 1963 until 1995, serving as postmaster since 1971. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Edgewood Chamber of Commerce, Edgewood American Legion and National Association of Retired Postmasters. Kenneth was a former Boy Scout leader, director of the Ed-Co Booster Club, member of Youth for Christ board of directors and past president of the Edgewood Little League. Survivors include his wife, Jan Bergan, Edgewood; his children, Timothy (Cayla) Bergan, Newton, Julie Davison, Manchester, Thomas (Eileen) Bergan, Edgewood and Kevin Bergan, Hiawatha; grandchildren, Dalton, Haley, and Dayne Bergan, Kara and Connor Davison; his mother, Anna Bergan, Strawberry Point; sisters, Venita (Ken) Wolleat and Shirley (Richard) Brandenburg, all of Cedar Rapids and Marie (Nolan) Knight, Strawberry Point; a brother, James Bergan, Park City, UT; numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father in 1976 and his father and mother-in-law, Frank and Marie Jaeger.

Frances Rowena Dyer was born
on September 25, 1914, to George and Addie (Angell) Pulver near Earlville, Iowa. She received her education and graduated from Earlville High School. On February 12, 1934, she married John Dyer. Five children were born
to this union. They lived and farmed in Delaware County, Iowa, until they retired to town in 1983. John died in 1985. Frances entered the Edgewood Convalescent Center on February 3, 2004, where she died on Sunday evening, February 29, 2004, following a brief illness. She was eighty-nine years of age. Frances is survived by son, John (Phyllis) Dyer of Cedar Rapids; daughters, Mary Kay (Cletus) Harry of Rochester, Minnesota and Joyce (Roger) Harry of Manchester; daughter-in-law, Darleen Dyer of Peosta; eleven grandchildren; seven (and one on the way) great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; son, Gary Dyer in 2001; daughter Janis Dorman in 1995; three sisters, Ruth Payn, Mary Hunt, and Martha Reed. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in memory of Frances.
She received her education and graduated from Earlville High School.
Frances worked twenty years as a dietary aide and supervisor at the West Delaware High School lunchroom. She was devoted to family, enjoyed basketball, gardening, and the Cubs, and kept up to date on politics and the news.

Ambrose F. “Andy” Vaske, 60, of Plano, TX, formerly of Greeley, died Friday, February 27, 2004 at Medical City of Dallas, TX, after a long battle with cancer. He was born
March 27, 1943 in Greeley, IA to Paul W. and Helen (Funke) Vaske. He graduated from Greeley High School in 1963 and Loras College in 1967. He was united in marriage to Verna White on June 7, 1967 in Worthington, IA. Andy had an extensive career of thirty-two years with JC Penney Co. After an early retirement, he worked with Vida International, Inc. of New York City. Andy’s true love of life was sports and family, and friends; especially his four legged ones. Following his father’s footsteps, he was an active member of the Milking Shorthorn Society. He was also known as his children’s largest supporter and loudest cheerleader in their successful athletic careers. Survivors include his wife, Verna Vaske, Plano, TX; his children and their families, Dennis Vaske and Sheila Coletta, Providence, RI and Deanna and Casey Cords, Frisco, TX; a grandchild, Elle Enza Vaske; his mother, Helen Vaske, Greeley; brothers, Jerry (Terri) Vaske, Tama and Duane (Melanie) Vaske, Knoxville; sisters, Verna (Bill) Turnis, DeWitt, Janice (Dennis) Knipper, Greeley and Donna (Mike) Steffen, Earlville. Andy was preceded in death by his father on January 27, 2004.

Marjorie Mae Zurcher Ferguson, 79, of Monticello, IA, formerly of Monona, died Friday, February 27, 2004 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, IA, following a short illness. She was born
May 5, 1924, to Emil and Elsie (Gilster) Zurcher in their family home on the farm north of Farmersburg, IA. Her mother passed away when Marjorie was eighteen days old. Marjorie was baptized at the family home, held in the arms of her aunt, Emma Biel, beside her mother’s coffin. She lived and was raised by her grandparents, Henry and Anna Reinke Gilster. She was educated at the Cresco Public School graduating with the class of 1942. On Friday, January 1, 1943, Reverend Amos L. Walker and the Monona pastor at the time united Marjorie Mae Zurcher in marriage to Lyman Robert Ferguson at the Cresco Evangelical Church in Howard County. Four children were born
to this union. Lyman and Marjorie celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on January 1, 2003. The couple farmed with Lyman’s father until they purchased their own farm where they resided and raised their family. They sold the family farm in 1976 and moved to Monticello in 1978. Marjorie worked on the family farm with Lyman, and together they raised their family instilling a set of values in their children. They set the example of work ethic for their children. The value of hard work, sticking it out through good times and bad, and the benefit of these ethics. Through example Marjorie showed love, kindness, willingness to help others, unconditional love and forgiveness for each other. She was a great cook, often cooking more than enough to feed everyone at the table. She enjoyed making craft projects, ceramics, writing letters to people and worked hard on family history information. She was active in church circles when younger and living in Monona. She encouraged her children to become the most they can and supported their decisions. She mostly enjoyed her grand and great-grandchildren, having fun playing cards and games with them. Survivors include her children, Gary and wife Bonnie Ferfuson, St. Francis, KS, Don and wife Deb Ferguson, Black Mountain, NC, Dean and wife Peg, Elkader and Lorie and husband Paul Schmidt, Monticello; grandchildren, David (Trish) Ferguson, Darrel (Heather) Ferguson, Dale Ferguson, Troy (Susan) Ferguson, Trent Ferguson, Tara Ferguson, Tiffany Ferguson, Robert Ferguson, Misti Ferguson, Tami (Ben) Coyle, Tracy Schmidt, Justin and Deanna Schmidt and great-grandchildren, Dylan Ferguson, Kayla Ferguson, Stephen Ferguson, James Ferguson and Tori Ferguson. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her stepmother, Pearl Zurcher, her brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Ellen Zurcher, brother, Bruce Zurcher and step-grandson, Gary Bollman.

Lawrence F. Thein Sr., 88, Edgewood, died Friday morning, February 27, 2004, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, Guttenberg following a long illness. He was born
in Elkport on September 26, 1915, to Joseph and Emma (Berns) Thein. He graduated from Elkport High School in 1934. He was united in marriage to Darleen Scheer on April 18, 1942 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Littleport. Two children were born
to this union. Lawrence was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church until it closed. He is currently a member of St. Mark’s in Edgewood. Lawrence was a very devout Roman Catholic and lived his life simply. He was a carpenter and farmer. He loved his family. He loved hunting, fishing and the outdoors. Survivors include his wife, Darleen, Edgewood; two children, Lawrence ( Jo Marie) Thein II, Edgewood, Kathryn (Wally) Brown, Edgewood; five grandchildren, Shelley (Paul) Dolan, Patti (Loras) Gerner, Paul (Stacy) Brown, Joan (Jack) Goedken and Julie (Mark) Johnson; and fourteen great-grandchildren He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Hubert Thein.

Eugene Robert “Shorty” Keppler, 69, Elgin, died Wednesday, February 25, 2004, at his home in Elgin following a long illness. He was born
June 26, 1934, in Monona to Joseph and Matilda (Havlicek) Keppler. Eugene served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged on May 14, 1957. He was married to Phyllis Matthies on February 22, 1962. Three children were born
to this union. He graduated from Monona High School. He worked with S.S. Kresge Company (later K-Mart). He opened stores across the mid-west before being promoted to K-Mart world headquarters in Troy MI. After retirement, he returned to Iowa. Survivors include three sons, Patrick Keppler, Rochester Hills, MI, Michael (Amy) Keppler, Aurora, IL, Joseph (Jillynn) Keppler, Lake Orion, MI; four grandchildren, Sarah Keppler, James Keppler, Justin Keppler, Alison Keppler; one brother, Thomas (Shirley) Keppler, Monona and two nieces, Susan Keppler and Lisa Keppler. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joseph Keppler and Edward Keppler and one nephew, Gary Keppler.
