LeRoy Irvin Thompson, 74, died Wednesday, February 25, 2004, at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, WI, following a brief illness. He was born
June 10, 1929 in rural Monona to Archie and Eltha (Kliefoth) Thompson. LeRoy graduated from Monona High School in 1947. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged on April 29, 1955. He was united in marriage to Donna Fett on August 23, 1955, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. LeRoy farmed until retirement and then he drove semi for CRST in Cedar Rapids. He was an avid bowler, golfer, enjoyed reading, snowmobiling and loved traveling to the mountains. Survivors include his wife, Donna, Monona; three sisters, Aletha Bollman, Waverly, Dorothy (Moe) Miller, Johnston, Irma Gunderson, Cedar Rapids; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Thompson, Muscatine and many nieces and nephews. LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Gerald, Gaylord, VerDean and a nephew, Larry Bollman.

Eunice D. Miller, 76, Elkader, died Tuesday, February 24, 2004, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader following a long illness. She was born
November 13, 1927, in Farmersburg Township of Clayton County, Iowa to Elmer and Zelda (Rayment) Schmalfeld. She was confirmed June 28, 1942 at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg. She graduated from Farmersburg High School in 1945. She was united in marriage to Lawrence Miller Jr. on January 26, 1948, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Three children were born
to this union. Eunice worked as a secretary at Great Plains Company and Clayton County Soil Conservation Office. Eunice and Jr. operated the Oasis Drive-In for many years in Elkader. She loved to crochet and needlepoint. She was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister who will be sadly missed by all. Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Miller Jr., Elkader; her children, LuAnn D (Ray) Severson, Elgin and Larry D (Sherri) Miller, Dubuque, five grandchildren, Tim, Mike and Erin Severson and Avery and Berkley Miller; two great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Kolin Severson; and a sister, Bernice (Eugene) Kobler, Omaha, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Lee Douglas Miller and a sister Norma Hughes.

Kathleen Marie Jokumsen, 55, of Elkader, IA, died Tuesday, May 04, 2004, at the Elkader Care Center, following a long illness. She was born
on May 22, 1948 in Cedar Falls, IA to James and Margaret (Christiansen) Jokumsen. She graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1966, and received her bachelor's degree from Luther College in 1970. Kathy taught for thirty-one years in the Central Community School District at Volga and Elkader, teaching courses in physical education, junior high mathematics and high school mathematics. She also was a coach for girl's athletics for several years. Kathy was a member of the Field Hockey team at Luther College and also enjoyed ice hockey, softball, basketball and other sports as a participant, coach and spectator. She enjoyed camping and biking, and was a Boy Scout leader for several years. She was a member of the Norway Lutheran Church and active in the WELCA. Survivors include her four sons, David (Emily Pierce) of Monticello, James (J.J.) of Pocahontas, Timothy (T.C.) and Justin of Elkader; a grandson, Tristan Pierce and one aunt, Ann Madsen of Cedar Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Myrtle was born
in Highland Township, Clayton County, Iowa, to Christian K. and Julia Ruroden Houg. She was baptized at Highland Lutheran Church and confirmed at Norway Lutheran Church. In 1934, she was united in marriage to Raymond O. Glesne in Galena, Illinois. Survivors include her three sons, Ronald (Gloria), The Villages, Florida, John (Eve), Golden, Colorado and Eugene (Judy), Omaha, Nebraska; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers, Tilman, Vernon, Millard and Carl; and three sisters, Selma (Moon), Lillian (Tayek) and Juliette (Olson).
She was a member of Peace United Church of Christ and a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star and of Royal Neighbors of America.
The family has requested memorials be directed to the Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader, Iowa.

Eugene Robert (Shorty) Keppler, 69, Elgin, died Wednesday, February 25, 2004, at his home in Elgin following a long illness. He was born
June 26, 1934, in Monona to Joseph and Matilda (Havlicek) Keppler. Eugene served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged on May 14, 1957. He was married to Phyllis Matthies on February 22, 1962. Three children were born
to this union. He graduated from Monona High School. He worked with S.S. Kresge Company (later K-Mart). He opened stores across the mid-west before being promoted to K-Mart world headquarters in Troy MI. After retirement, he returned to Iowa. Survivors include three sons, Patrick Keppler, Rochester Hills, MI, Michael (Amy) Keppler, Aurora, IL, Joseph (Jillynn) Keppler, Lake Orion, MI; four grandchildren, Sarah Keppler, James Keppler, Justin Keppler, Alison Keppler; one brother, Thomas (Shirley) Keppler, Monona and two nieces, Susan Keppler and Lisa Keppler. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joseph Keppler and Edward Keppler and one nephew, Gary Keppler.

John Clark Costigan, 86, of Elkader, died Monday, February 23, 2004, at his home. He had diabetes and suffered a stroke on June 7, 2003. He was born
April 20, 1917, at Elkport, IA to John and Gertrude (Smith) Costigan. After graduating from Elkport High School, he attended Elkader Junior College and Iowa State College (UNI), where he played baseball for the varsity team. He had a lifelong interest in athletics – especially the local teams and the University of Iowa football. Clark entered the U.S. Army on May 13, 1942, serving during WW II. He served with the Major Corps of Engineers in Africa, Italy, France, China and various countries in the Middle East for two and a half years. As an engineer, he helped build advance air bases, constructed pipelines across Africa and was in charge of heavy equipment, which meant twenty-four hour maintenance to keep all equipment moving. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Witt on September 30, 1945, at Pasco, Washington Naval Air Station. After returning home he continued in the business of building bridges and culverts. A partnership had been formed in 1937 with Thor Fisko in Garber, IA. In 1945, a new company was started in Elkader, and in 1948, he became sole owner of the J. C. Costigan Construction Co. He retired in 1973. He had been a member of the AGC (Associated General Contractor) of America and Iowa for thirty-five years. He continued to manage his farms near St. Olaf until his death. Clark had many interests including traveling, where he visited many places he had been during WW II. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Building was not only a job; it was a way of doing things for his community. He was a board member when the swimming pool was constructed, and a board member when the hospital was built. Clark and his partner, Bill Kanak, built the bowling alley. He was one of three that purchased the Hop farm and helped to construct the golf course. With his partners he bought and developed the area near the hospital, the Area Education Assoc. complex and Breezy Point housing development. He was elected to the Upper Iowa College board of trustees, and was a Central State Bank board member for many years. He gave generously to many projects in the town; his chief interest being the Carter House Museum where he and his family once lived. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Costigan, Elkader; four children, Heidi (Michael Girsch), Minneapolis, MN, John W. (Sheila Martin), Tallahassee, FL, Colleen (Richard Talbot), Seattle, WA and Dan (Judy Matas), Seattle, WA; eight grandchildren and a sister,
