Bernadine Louise Rentschler, 82, of Garber died Saturday night, February 21, 2004, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital following a long illness. She was born icon July 31, 1921, in rural Garber, Iowa to Earnest and Emma (Jaster) Smock. She was united in marriage to Lloyd Rentschler on November 16, 1945, in Garber. Three children were born icon to this union. They made their home in the Garber area where they farmed for many years. Bernadine enjoyed the companionship with her dog Pepper. Survivors include her husband Lloyd Rentschler of rural Garber; her children, Linda (Lorace) Amling, Dubuque, Randy (Carol) Rentschler, Hiawatha, Monte (Susan) Rentschler, LaCrosse, WI; six grandchildren, Richard and Robert Amling and Allyssa, Scott, Ann and Thomas Rentschler; two great grandchildren, Emma Amling and Devin Rentschler and a sister Betty Palmer, Garber She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Beulah McAmis and Blanche Cardin and four brothers, Bernard “John”, Burdette, Burnell and Bentley “Pete” Smock.

Mavis L. Dummermuth

December 28, 1924 - February 20, 2004

Elgin, Iowa

Mavis Lorraine Durscher Dummermuth, age 79, left her earthly home on February 20, 2004. The daughter of Clara Yunker Durscher and Walter Durscher, Mavis was born icon on December 28, 1924 in Rock Valley, Iowa before the family moved to the Elgin/Clermont/West Union area. After graduating from Elgin High School, Mavis married Conner H. Dummermuth on August 25, 1943. To this blessed union, four children were born: Connie, David, Kim, and Chris. Mavis and Conner farmed their entire forty-six years of marriage, and Mavis continued farming with son, Kim, after Conner’s death on April 11, 1989. Her family, the Dummermuth farm, the extended Elgin community, and valued friends and neighbors meant the world to Mavis. She was a member of Elgin Lutheran Church and a Board Director of First National Bank of West Union, Iowa. Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, Clara and Walter, her brother Wayne Durscher, and her husband, Conner. Living on and missing Mavis’s earthly presence are her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren: daughter, Connie Steere, and husband Keith of Kingsport, TN, their children Ryan with wife Shaunna and their daughters Kersten and Alyse of Baltimore, Maryland and Courtney of Knoxville, Tennessee; son, David, and wife Darla of Crawford, Colorado; son, Kim, and wife Lois of Elgin, Iowa, their children Matt with wife Becky of Washington DC, Chad and wife Mandy of Ankeny, Iowa, Drew and wife Kellie and their daughters, Laurel and Alaine of Cascade, Montana, Kari of Ames, Iowa, and Brooke, Elgin, Iowa; son, Chris, of London, England and his daughter, Anna, of Quincy, Illinois. She is also survived by her sister, Neva Anderson, and husband Arvid of Sun City, Arizona, and sister-in-law Ann Durscher of West Union, Iowa.

Elmer Henry Kuehl

May 28, 1910 - February 19, 2004

Elkader, Iowa

Interment: at Mt. Harmony Cemetery - Rural Garber, Iowa

Elmer Henry Kuehl, 93, of Elkader, died Thursday, February 19, 2004 at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader, following a long illness. Elmer was born icon May 28, 1910, in rural Elkport, to John F. and Clara (Horstman) Kuehl. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elkport, where he was a life long member, serving faithfully in many capacities. He received his education in rural Volga township school near his home and worked on the family farm many years. On December 26, 1940, he was united in marriage to Iola Vorwald in Linn County. In 1963, Elmer and Iola were blessed with the adoption of two baby daughters from Seoul, Korea. Elmer was a herdsman for George Bechtel on Wyanett Dairy near Davenport, IA for some years before entering into partnership with brothers Marvin and LaVern on the family farm near Elkport. For many years he strove to develop a fine herd of purebred Holstein dairy cattle. Elmer was a life member of the Dairy Shrine Club, Fort Atkinson, WI. He was an officer, director, and president of Clayton County Dairy Testing Association for many years. In 1979, Elmer was honored with receiving the first Retired Dairyman Award of Clayton County. He and his wife, Iola, retired to a home on Davidson Street, Elkader, in September of 1988. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Iola Kuehl, Elkader; two daughters, Lola L. (David) Herman, W. Bloomfield, MI and Kimberly R. (Aaron) Stoltz, Eldridge; three grandchildren, Jason Lee and Jamie Lea Hunt and Tyler Gene Boone; three brothers, Ralph (Virginia) Kuehl, Swisher, Raymond (Fran) Kuehl, Cedar Falls and LaVern (Cora Mae) Kuehl, Elkport; two sisters-in-law, Aldean Kuehl, Elkader and Grace Kuehl, Elkport; a brother-in-law, Harold Swanson and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Louis, John Jr., William and Marvin and a sister, Dorothy Swanson.

Susan E. Burrack, 55, of Wadena, died from cancer on Wednesday, February 18, 2004, at her home. She was born icon July 20, 1948, in Oelwein, IA to Harold and Genevieve (Otterbeck) Weber. She graduated from Central Community High School in Elkader. She was united in marriage to Daniel Burrack on July 14, 1970, in Elkader. In 1981, they renewed their vows at St. Francis Catholic Church in Fayette. Susan managed Big Rock Golf and Country Club in Fayette. She enjoyed golfing, her herd of cows and watching her friends dirt race. Survivors include her husband, Daniel Burrack, Wadena; Daniel (Teresa) Burrack, Deanna (Larry) McTaggart and Debra (Jarrod) Loftsgard all of Wadena; six grand- children, Garrett, Mallory, Marrah, Alisha, John and Logan; her father, Harold Weber, Volga; brothers and sisters, Joe Weber, Strawberry Point, Barb (Chuck) Burgin, Volga, Mary Moyle, Wadena, Theresa (Keith) Polkow, Volga, Tom (Mary) Weber, Volga, Terry (Regina) Weber, Volga, Tim (Viva) Weber, Oelwein and Kenny (Lois) Weber, Oelwein and her mother-in-law, Eva Burrack, Wadena. She was preceded in death by her mother, a brother-in-law, Les Moyle; two sisters-in-law, Sharon Cornish and Della Weber and her father-in-law, Alfred Burrack.

Alfred J. Arthur, 90, died Friday, February 13, 2004 at the Edgewood Convalescent Home, Edgewood following a long illness. He was born icon July 18, 1913, in Edgewood, IA to A.J. and Nellie (White) Arthur. He graduated from Edgewood High School in 1931, where he was active in baseball and basketball. As a youngster, he worked at Noble-Rulon Grocery Store in Edgewood. He was united in marriage to Helen A. Parker on June 11, 1938 in Manchester. Two sons were born icon to this union. While making their home in Manchester, Alfred worked for Kleen-Maid Baking Company, Curtis Candy Company and Borden Ice Cream Company. They moved to Edgewood in 1962, and purchased the grocery store that Alfred had worked at while a teenager. Alfred and Helen operated the store known as A&H; Grocery until their retirement. Alfred was a life long member of Trinity United Methodist Church, was more than a fifty year member of Avalon Lodge No. 606 A.F. & A.M., now Constellation Lodge No. 67 A.F. & A.M. of Colesburg. He also has been a member for more than fifty years with the Edgewood Lodge No. 358, Knights of Pythias. Survivors include his wife Helen, Edgewood; two sons, James B. Arthur and his wife Beverly, Des Moines and Al (A.J.) Arthur and his wife Linda of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Craig, Michael and Andrea; a great-grandson, Kyle and a brother, Francis Arthur and his wife Lorna, Edgewood. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Lillian Peters, Bess Lichter and Edna Hansel and four brothers, Lou, Howard, Robert and Kenneth.

Vina Blanche Wall

May 29, 1916 - February 12, 2004

Delhi, Iowa

Interment: Following funeral services February 16, 2004 at Evergreen Cemetery - Delhi, Iowa

Vina was born icon May 29, 1916, at Menoken, North Dakota to Bernard and Elyda (Porter) Durey. Vina was united in marriage to Harold Wall on March 9, 1935, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Two sons were born icon to this union. Together they resided and farmed south of Manchester. Harold died December 19, 1962, and shortly after Vina moved to town. Vina was united in marriage to Everett Robinson on April 28, 1988, at Delhi, Iowa. Together they resided in Manchester. Everett died March 3, 1992. Vina has resided at the Monticello Care Center since September of 1998. Vina died at the Monticello Care Center in Monticello, Iowa, on Thursday, February 12, 2004. She was eighty-seven years of age. Survivors include her two sons, George (Audrey) Wall and Merle (Caron) Wall all of Delhi; seven grandchildren, Dennis (Sue) Wall of Dalton, Georgia, Steven (Jean) Wall, Scott (Brenda) Wall, Brett (Barbara) Wall all of Delhi, and Connie (Henry) Bulanda, Pamela (Douglas) Feltes all of Cedar Rapids, and Bruce (Carrie) Wall of Jesup; twenty great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Doran Petlon of Manchester. In addition to her two spouses, Vina was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Sandra Wall; one sister, Bernice Reimer; two brothers, Burdette and Edward “Jack” Durey; and her parents.

She was raised and educated in the Manchester, Iowa area graduating from the Manchester High School in 1934.

Vina will be remembered as one who enjoyed her family and grandchildren. She also enjoyed dancing, gardening, sewing, and playing cards with friends.
