Elsie Ruby Morehouse was born icon on October 9, 1925, in Lowry City, MO, the youngest daughter of William and Millie Ann(Forgey) Winter. She was united in marriage to Leslie Wayne Morehouse at the Methodist Church in Lamont, IA on December 16, 1945. He left this life on April 16, 2000, after fifty-four years of marriage. Elsie was a homemaker, raising the children and helping Les fram for many years north of Masonville and later north of Manchester. She also worked at the Good Neighbor home in Manchester. Since retirement, Elsie has enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, reading, quilting, visiting and the Hawkeyes. Survivors include her five children and their families, Cinda (Thomas D.) Welu, Dubuque, Loren (Carol) Morehouse, Warrensburg, MO, Bill (Kathy) Morehouse, Kansas City, MO, Jon (Paulette) Morehouse, Blue Springs, MO and Ed (Deb Noggle) Morehouse, Guttenberg; seven grandchildren, James (Trudy) Morehouse, Grain Valley, MO, Jeanine Morehouse, Columbia, MO, Justin LaRue, Cedar Falls, Christopher and Ryan Morehouse, Blue Springs, MO and Starla Leslie and Joseph Jesse Morehouse, Kansas City, MO; a great-granddaughter, McKenna Morehouse, Grain Valley, MO; a sister, Elizabeth (Beryl) McConnell, Bowling Green, MO and many nieces and nephews. Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers, William, Vivian and Elmer, in infancy, John Winter and her parents.

Lulu Gretchen Doran, 91, of Manchester, IA, formerly of Tama, IA, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2004, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester, following a lengthy illness. She was born icon April 25, 1912, at Tama, IA, the daughter of Amos and Carrie (Isbell) Paxton. She attended the Tama Public Schools. On November 23, 1931, Gretchen was united in marriage to James Leo Doran in Lancaster, Missouri. The couple lived most of their married lives in Tama. James passed away on December 7, 1957. Shortly thereafter, Gretchen began working as a housekeeper for priests in Dubuque and Clear Lake, IA. In 1969, Gretchen moved with her sister to Manchester and worked for a year at the Mode O’ Day store. They continued to make their home in Manchester. Gretchen entered the Monticello Nursing & Rehab Center in 1997, and in 1998 moved to the Good Neighbor Home. Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins. Gretchen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers, Ethy in infancy, Alba, Frederick and Gordon and two sisters, Thelma in infancy and Grinnell Carnal. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Good Neighbor Home and St. Mary’s Catholic Church both in Manchester.

Donald Becker

Donald was born icon March 6, 1937 at Dyersville, Iowa to Clarence and Lucille (Moorman) Becker. He was raised in the Manchester area graduating from the Manchester High School in 1954. He served honorably in the United States Navy from 1954 until 1957 and had served on the U.S.S. Forrestal. Donald was united in marriage to Beverly Downs on June 10, 1961 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Manchester. Four children were born icon to this union. Together they resided in the Manchester area. After returning home from the service Donald worked for the Gas Company in Cedar Rapids, Allen Appleby Electric in Manchester. In 1977 Donald started Becker Electric in Manchester. Donald died suddenly Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. He was sixty-six years of age. Donald was a long time member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife, Beverly of Manchester; one son, Mark (Melissa) Becker of Manchester; two daughters, Lisa (Mike) Waterman of Delhi, and Carla Becker (fiancé, Perry Peterson) of Manchester; five grandchildren, Sarah Stelken, Ashley Fitzpatrick, Linsay Becker, Brandon Becker and Alyssa Peterson; two brothers, David Becker of Manchester, and Larry (Sandra) Becker of Enid, Oklahoma; one sister, Patricia Becker of Manchester; three aunts; two uncles; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son in infancy and his parents.

Amber Brockmeyer

Amber Brockmeyer, 98, died Sunday, February 1, 2004, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home following a brief illness. She was born icon on October 29, 1905, in Garber to Lyman and Rose (Borrett) Hansel. She was raised on a farm in the Garber community, educated in the rural school near the farm, and later graduated from Colesburg High School with the class of 1923. After her graduation, she taught in the rural school near Garber for a few years. She was married to Milton Brockmeyer on February 18, 1926, at the Zion Methodist Church near Colesburg. Two sons were born icon to this union. They resided on a farm in the Zion Community until moving into the town of Colesburg when they retired in 1950. Milton passed away on March 2, 1982, but Amber continued to maintain her home in Colesburg until May of 2001, when she suffered a stroke and moved to the Convalescent Home in Edgewood. Amber was an active member of the Colesburg United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and the Minnehaha Chapter of the Eastern Star, serving as the Treasurer of this organization for 42 years, a charter member of the Colesburg Garden Club, and served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. She also served on the Delaware County 4-H Committee for five years and on the Cancer Drive Committee in the county for many years. Amber enjoyed gardening, handwork and flowers. She was a resident of the Colesburg community for 78 years. Survivors include her sons, Virgil (Janet) Brockmeyer, Colesburg, Rev. Myron (Delpha) Brockmeyer, Waterloo; four grandchildren, Jan (Terry) Brockmeyer, Cedar Rapids, Gina (Bryan) Hanna, Mason City, Diane Brockmeyer, Ankeny, Mark (Angela) Brockmeyer, Shenandoah; six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; three sisters, Blanche Morley, Agnes Hansel, one in infancy and two brothers, Earl and Arthur Hansel.

Richard R. (Dick) Lammers

Richard Raymond (Dick) Lammers was born icon October 27, 1940, in Dyersville, Iowa, to Elmer and Sylveria (Riesburg) Lammers. He was united in marriage to Lois Wegmann on April 4, 1964, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Petersburg. Five children were born icon to this union. Together they resided in the Manchester area. Dick was engaged and owned Lammers Construction. Survivors include his wife, Lois Lammers of Manchester; five children, Ann (Andy) Wooldridge of Center Point, Amy (Russ) Glasgow of Burlington, Greg (Karla) Lammers of Manchester, Jill (Michael) Ridenour of Manchester, and Jane Lammers of LaPorte City; grandchildren, Jessica, Arika, Allison, and Baby Wooldridge, Sara, Rachel, Zach, Tadd, and Braden Glasgow, Laurynn and Brent Lammers, Maxwell and Benton Ridenour; two brothers, James Lammers of Lamont, and Dan (Carolyn) Lammers of Manchester; two sisters, Judy Lammers of Manchester, and Linda (Jim) Thole of Manchester; and mother-in-law, Rosella Wegmann of Dyersville.

He was a member of the National Guard from 1963-1970.

He received his education at St. Peter & Paul School in Petersburg.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Education Board, Little League, and West Delaware Booster Club. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and attending events involving his children and grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters-in-law, Janice Lammers and Karen Wegmann; nephew Brian Lammers; father-in-law Frank Wegmann; and brother-in-law Daniel Wegmann.

Paul Vaske

Paul W. Vaske, 88, of Greeley, IA, died Tuesday, January 27, 2004, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home, Edgewood, following a brief illness. He was born icon December 24, 1915, in rural Luxemburg to Frank and Catherine (Maiers) Vaske. Paul and Helen Funke were married May 27, 1941, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Greeley. They farmed for forty years, retiring in 1980, and moved to Greeley. Paul was on the cemetery board, a 4-H leader for fourteen years, Greeley Creamery Board, Greeley School Board, Milking Shorthorn Board, and the Commercial Club Board. He was an active member of St. Joseph’s Church. Paul was best known for his great love of his family, namely his grandchildren, milking shorthorn dairy cattle and card games with friends. Survivors include his wife Helen; six children, Ambrose (Verna) Vaske, Plano, TX, Jerry (Terri) Vaske, Tama, Verna (Bill) Turnis, DeWitt, Janice (Dennis) Knipper, Greeley, Donna (Mike) Steffen, Earlville, Duane (Melanie) Vaske, Knoxville; nineteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Wilfred (Anna Mae) Vaske, Dyersville and one sister-in-law, Alma Vaske, Dyersville. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Elmer Vaske, three sisters, Marie Wulfekuhle, Florence Hermsen, Virginia Berns and two brothers, Leander Vaske and Cletus Vaske.
