Vera Vivian was born icon April 23, 1906, in Vermont, Illinois to William and Lida A. (Edie) Harden. Vera was united in marriage to James Daker Bishop on May 21, 1923, in Chicago, Illinois. Together they farmed south of Manchester in Milo Township. James died March 26, 1973. Vera later moved to Manchester. Vera passed away January 23, 2004, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester after a short illness. She had been a resident since 1995. Vera was ninety-seven years of age. Vera is survived by two sons, Edwin (Helen) Bishop of Manchester and Bill (Jo) Bishop of Guttenburg; seven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Otis Cecil Harden and Louis Harden; and one sister, Theodocia Mulligan

She graduated from Oneida High School.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Methodist Ladies Circle, Neighborhood Club, enjoyed traveling south for the winter, cooking, and family

Chyrold Elmer Simons

Chyrold Elmer Simons, 71, Colesburg, died Thursday, June 24, 2004, at the Edgewood Convalescent Center, Edgewood, following a long illness. He was born icon January 8, 1933, in rural Garber, to Elmer and Bertha Mae (Bowman) Simons He attended country school in the area. He entered the U.S. Army on February 11, 1953, serving during the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged on January 21, 1955. He was united in marriage to Lois Funk on June 3, 1957, at the United Methodist Church, Colesburg. Two children were born icon to this union. Chyrold farmed many years in the Colesburg area and also was a logger. He began working at Ertl's in Dyersville in 1983 and retired in 1995. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was a member of the William F. Brockmeyer American Legion Post #582, Colesburg. Survivors include his wife Lois Simons and his two children, Richard and Mary Simons, all of Colesburg; his mother Bertha Mae Simons, Colesburg; two brothers, Lester (Carol) Simons and Herbert Simons, all of Colesburg and a sister, Sharon (Charles) Funk, Colesburg. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister Verna Mae in infancy.

Janet Kay Medberry

Janet Kay Medberry, 41, of New Hope, MN, formerly of Elgin, died Sunday morning, June 20, 2004 at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, MN, following a sudden illness. Janet Kay Medberry was born icon May 29, 1963 to Clifford and Elinor Wiley Medberry in Postville, Iowa. She was a baptized and confirmed member of St Paul's United Methodist Church. Jan attended the Valley Community Schools where she was active in the band and chorus, graduating in May 1981. Jan attended the University of Iowa and graduated with a Bachelor's in Accounting in August 1985. She proceeded to obtain her Master's in Accounting in May 1987. In June 1987 she started to work for Nortronics as an accounting supervisor. She left there in February of 1991 to join the work force of Schneider, a subsidiary of Pfizer. In 1994 she gained employment at Graco, Inc in Minneapolis where she was employed until the time of her death. Her devotion to her 'Graco family' and the success of that organization was very well known by her family and friends. Having been born icon in the vastness of rural America, God saw it fitting to place Jan's wonderful close childhood friend Cindy Frieden Torkelson just 1500 feet from front door to front door. Jan enjoyed traveling with her family and with her good and dear friend, Alison Wiskel. She also held dear her God child and niece, Priya Medberry. Jan was always there for us when we needed her and will be sorely missed. She will also be missed for her humor, organizational skills and readiness to make hard work feel easy. Jan is survived by her parents, Cliff and Ellie Medberry, her grandmother, Vina Medberry, her brother Scott and his wife Poonam and daughter Priya, and by her brother Kevin and his wife Patty. Jan was preceded in death by her grandparents H.R. and Helen Wiley and by her grandfather, Max Medberry.

Gladys Marie Bowers

April 16, 1924 - June 19, 2004

Gladys Marie Bowers, 80, of Manchester, IA, died Saturday morning, June 19, 2004 at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester, following a sudden illness. She was born icon April 16, 1924 at her parent's farm home near Le Mars, IA, the daughter of Theodore and Rose (Seiler) Fischer. She attended the local schools and graduated from Le Mars High School. She attended Western Union (Westmar) College. She taught in the rural schools of Plymouth County, and later taught in West Delaware and Maquoketa Valley Schools. Gladys was a substitute teacher for twenty years. She was united in marriage to Wilfred L. Bowers on July 24, 1947 at Le Mars. They lived in Western, IA and in New Mexico, where they were missionaries at McCurdy School. They have lived in the Manchester area since 1966. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Mi-Ads and UMW. Survivors include her husband, Wilfred, of almost fifty-seven years; two sons, James (Bev) of Phoenix, AZ and Douglas (Rose) of Dubuque; three daughters, Janice (Harold) England of Cedar Rapids, Debra (Tobe) Werner of Manchester and Paula (Charles) Franks of Ely; thirteen grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald of Le Mars and a sister, Marian Gaumnitz of Lee Summit, MO. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Arlene Baker.

James John Mathews

James John Mathews, 89, Farmersburg, IA, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at the Postville Good Samaritan Center, Postville, IA, following an extended illness. He was born icon in Farmersburg, IA, on January 22, 1915, to James and Ella Marie (Schrader) Mathews. He graduated from Farmersburg High School and the University of Northern Iowa. James was united in marriage to Dolores M. Klasen on July 18, 1942, in San Luis Obispo, CA. Four children were born icon to this union. He served as an Airplane Inspector in the Army of the United States during W.W.II from July 12, 1943, until April 7, 1946, when he was honorably discharged. James was a teacher for a few years, then became self employed as owner of the Farmersburg Implement. He served on the board of People's State Bank for forty years, Farmersburg City Council, Farmersburg School Board member, MFL School Board member, Farmersburg Wagner Cemetery Director, American Legion member and was active many years in the Clayton County Democratic Party. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards with family and friends, fishing and especially reading. James enjoyed going to auctions and having a collection of Roseville pottery. Survivors include his wife, Dolores, Farmersburg; children, Dr. James John (Deborah) Mathews, Chicago, IL, Marilee Jane (Harlan) Wright, Indian Head, MD, Frederick Jay (Lisa) Mathews, Lansing; grandchildren, James John (Nili) Mathews, Jamie Leigh Mathews, Matthew Burton (Laura) Wright, Carrie Leigh Wright, Samantha (Paul) Pyszniak, Cody Mathews and one great-grandson, Zachary Ariel. James was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Marilou Mathews and his mother and father-in-law, Harvey and Linda Klasen.

LeRoy W. (Tag) Homewood

LeRoy W. (Tag) Homewood, 82, of Waukon, formerly of Volga, IA, died Monday morning, June 14, 2004, at his home following a brief illness. He was born icon January 3, 1922, in Hawkeye, IA to William and Eva (Steuer) Homewood. Le Roy was a WWII Navy veteran. Survivors include his wife, Mary Homewood, Waukon and a daughter, Lois Adam, Waukon. A private memorial and inurnment will be held at a later date.

Isabel M. Blake

March 28, 1916 - June 10, 2004

Manchester, Iowa

Interment: June 14, 2004 at Mount Calvary Cemetery - Cedar Rapids

Isabel Mary Blake was born icon March 28, 1916, at St. John's in New Foundland, Canada, to William and Alicia (Parrell) Nolan. She was raised and educated in the area, graduating from the local high school. She was united in marriage to Carlin Blake in 1944 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in St. John's, Newfoundland. Four children were born icon to this union. Together they resided in Ohio until moving to Iowa where they farmed near Solon for twenty years and later Masonville for six years. They then moved to Marion. While residing in Masonville and Marion, Isabel worked as a nurse's aide. Isabel and Carlin retired to Bella Vista, Arkansas and later returned to reside in rural Strawberry Point. Carlin died in 1991. Isabel then moved to Manchester. Isabel died after a brief illness, Thursday, June 10, 2004, at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester. She was eighty-eight years of age. Survivors include two sons, Gary (Kathy) Blake of Hazleton and Ronald (Mary Beth) Blake of Chicago, Illinois; one daughter, Mary (Steve) Bockenstedt of Manchester; eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. Isabel was preceded in death by her husband, Carlin; her daughter, Janette Blake; and two sisters, Mary Nolan and Margaret Kennedy.

Isabel was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She will be remembered as one who enjoyed her grandchildren, doing crossword puzzles, and traveling with her husband, Carlin.
