Joseph Thomas Dullard

Joseph Thomas Dullard, 65, Wadena, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union, of acute leukemia. He was born icon in Oelwein, on March 21, 1939, and was adopted at eighteen months of age into the family of Walter and Mary Dullard. Joe was raised on a farm near West Union, graduating from the West Union High School. Joe served his country six years in the United States Marine Corp. with two tours in Viet Nam. His jobs throughout his life included positions in sales, state park maintenance and his most recent position on the maintenance staff at NICC, Calmar, IA. Joe's work ethic included pride in a job well done. Joe dearly loved his family, friends and co-workers. His pride in his acreage was shown with meticulous care and constant tree planting. Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Nancy Fox, Wadena; his children, Troy (Jennifer) Dullard, Thorton, CO, John Dullard, Denver, CO, Kim Zilverberg, Belle Plaine, MN, Pat Torson, Volga, SD, Heather (Tim) Morris, Ames, IA, Matt (Michelle) Fox, Conrad, and Andrew Fox, Riceville; eleven grandchildren; two sisters, Sr. Maria Gorretti, Dubuque, Mary (Don) DeMoss, Rockford, MN, one brother, Ed Dullard, Miami Lakes, FL and many friends who were dearly loved. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and his faithful Golden Retriever 'Molly' of thirteen years. At Joe's request, there will be no public service. Joe's wishes were to be cremated with a family memorial at a future date.

Luella Josephine Dettmann, 86, Monona died Monday, June 7, 2004, at the Elkader Care Center, Elkader, following a brief illness. Luella was born icon on December 7, 1917 in rural St. Olaf John and Louise (Smerud) Larson. Luella was baptized and confirmed at Norway Lutheran Church, rural St. Olaf. She attended country schools through eighth grade. She was united in marriage to Aaron Tieden on May 5, 1937 at Norway Lutheran Church. He died on September 25, 1962. On June 28, 1965, she married Myron Dettmann at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, and he died on October 29, 1987. Luella helped on the farm and worked at a dentist office in Monona for a few years. She was a homemaker who loved spending time with family and friends, sewing, cooking, golfing, crocheting, ceramics and her flowers. Survivors include her four children, Sandra (Dean) Refle, Elkader, John Tieden (special friend Kay Poole), West Union, Julie (Larry)Kurth, Farmersburg, Nancy (Peter) Clemens, Lake Forest, IL; ten grand children; numerous great-grandchildren; one brother, Warren (Delpha Mae) Larson, Cedar Rapids; one sister, Eileen Heiden, Elkader; two sisters-in-law, Gustava Larson, Cedar Rapids, Nora Larson, McGregor; several nieces and nephews and many friends. Luella was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; two brothers, Arnold Larson and Glen Larson and one son, Kenneth Tieden on March 15, 1946.

DeVere Johnes Halverson, 85, died Monday, June 7, 2004, at Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, WI, following a sudden illness. He was born icon July 5, 1918, in Fayette County, IA to Anna Bertina (Anderson) and Albert Oscar Halverson. He attended schools in Fayette and Clayton Counties. He was united in marriage to Norma Pearl Loftsgard on November 16, 1945 at Marion Lutheran Church, Gunder. Three children were born icon to this union. DeVere farmed his entire life in Fayette County. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved his family, farming and the St. Louis Cardinals. He is survived by his wife Norma; his children, Robert (Jane) Halverson, West Union, Nancy (Dan) Merfeld, Elburn, IL, daughter-in-law Peggy Halverson, West Union; nine grandchildren, Ann Halverson Britt, West Union, Jodi Halverson Bronson, Grundy Center, Jon Halverson, Des Moines, Kari Halverson Hackley, West Union, Kyle Halverson, at home, Shelby Halverson, at home, Michael Merfeld at home, Matthew Merfeld, at home, Mark Merfeld at home; four great grandchildren, Madison Bronson, Malia Bronson, Zander Britt, Kaitlyn Hackley; two brothers, Harold (Gladys) Halverson, Elgin, Louis (Darlene) Halverson, Stoughton, WI and two sisters, Irene Ruroden, Monona and Lillian Hansel, West Union. DeVere was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Larry DeVere Halverson and a sister, Frances Bemiss.

Gerald (Jerry) John Carroll, 87, Monona, died Sunday, June 6, 2004, at Thornton Manor, Lansing, following a long illness. Jerry was born icon in Cresco on March 6, 1917, to James Emmett and Mary Bertha (Ahern) Carroll. He graduated from Assumption High School in Cresco in 1935. Jerry worked in several grocery stores including managing Nation Tee Company in Dubuque. He started a Jerry's Jack Sprat Store in 1942. Jerry was united in marriage to Kathryn McCullow on October 10, 1939, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Monona. Eight children were born icon to this union. He served six years as Postmaster in Monona. Jerry started The Billboard in October, 1958, and Carroll Studio about the same time. He retired in 1983 when he sold the paper to his daughter Marcia. Survivors include his wife Kathryn, sons David and his wife Connie, Poway, CA, Steven and his wife Vanessa, San Diego, CA; daughters, Kathleen Strub, Lansing, Marilyn Emerson and her husband Mike, Cedar Rapids, Marcia Carroll, Monona, and Elizabeth Carroll, San Diego, CA; daughter-in-law, Michele Carroll; fifteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; a sister Mary Mulick, Cresco and sisters-in-law Edythe Clarke and Helen McCullow. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ray Carroll and Gene Carroll; a daughter, Margaret (Peg) Beauregard in 1981; a son Paul in 1997, son-in-law Ken Strub in 1999; three granddaughters and two great-granddaughters.

Catherine Constance Cole

Catherine Constance Cole, 94, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at the Edgewood Convalescent Center, Edgewood, following a long illness. She was born icon on July 17, 1909 in Edgewood to James Philip and Annette Hartman Cole. Catherine graduated from Edgewood High School. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College at Cedar Falls and received a teaching certificate. Her first position was at the Kremer School, which all of the Cole children attended. She taught there for one year and four years at another Delaware County school before returning to Iowa State Teachers' College. She taught in the elementary grades at Oneida, Farragut, Corning and Fort Madison. For a short time she worked at the Ravenswood Hospital in Chicago, IL, with her sister Ruth and then was employed at a lithograph company in Chicago, working with color separators. She attended the University of Iowa, taking art courses. Her drawings and painting, particularly of floral arrangements, showed considerable skill and are prized by the members of her family. Catherine was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Ruth Krug, Blanche Gloss, Cleo Pattison, Phillip Cole, Eleanor Hyde and Ralph Cole. She is survived by her brother, Bruce Cole, Morton Grove, IL.

Faye Isabelle Lenth

January 17, 1929 - May 29, 2004

McGregor, IA

Faye Isabelle Lenth, 75, McGregor, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a short illness. She was born icon in Monona on January 17, 1929, to Clarence and Maude (Carr) Ferguson. Faye graduated from McGregor High School. On April 25, 1957, she was united in marriage to Clifford Lenth at Caledonia, MN. Faye was a homemaker who loved spending time with her family and friends. She was accomplished at cross stitch and needle point. Faye is survived by her son, Harry Dehl, Stewartville, MN; three grandchildren, Jacob (Mindy) Dehl, Marion, Jessica Dehl and fianc, Daniel Williams, Iowa City, Emily Dehl, Stewartville, MN; two great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Dixie Jackson, Prairie du Chien, WI; sister-in-law, Mary Jane Ferguson, McGregor and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1994 one brother, Wilbert Ferguson, and her son, Robert. Private family memorial services were held on Thursday, June 3, 2004 at 1:00 PM at the Monona City Cemetery, Monona.

Gail Allison Binning was born icon January 4, 1914, in Earlville to James and Mary (Cook) Hunt. She was raised and educated in the Manchester and graduated from Manchester High School in 1932. Gail was married to Marvin Schmock in 1935. One son, Donald, was born icon to this union. Marvin died in 1937. She was employed at the Meggenburg Dept. Store, Schultz Store, Dr. Gandling and Dr. Stephens Offices, and from 1945 until she retired in 1979 she worked with her mother and son at Sunnyside Greenhouse. She was married to Charles Binning in 1961 until his death in 1964. Gail was a member of the United Methodist Church and enjoyed traveling with friends. Gail died at Finley Hospital in Dubuque on Tuesday, May 25th, following a lengthy illness. She was ninety years of age. Survivors include two grandchildren, Catherine (Scott) Weig of Cedar Rapids and David (Janet) Schmock of Manchester; four great-grandchildren, Derek and Austin Schmock, Nicole Tegler, and Scott Koch all of Manchester; and one twin brother, Gordon Hunt of Clear Lake. Gail was preceded in death by her two husbands; her son, Donald Schmock; a sister, Doris Hahn; and a brother, Stanley Hunt.

Edward Sass

July 18, 1933 - May 24, 2004

Farmersburg, IA

Edward Charles Sass, 70, Farmersburg, Iowa died Monday, May 24, 2004 at his home following a brief illness. He was born icon July 18, 1933 in Monona, Iowa to William Charles and Marie Marguerite (Schmitt) Sass. He was baptized November 12, 1933 and received his religious education at the First Methodist Church of Monona. As a boy, Edward mowed lawns and delivered the Cedar Rapids Gazette in Monona, and as a teen, he worked at Kottmans DX Station. After graduating from Monona High School on May 24, 1951, Edward farmed with his father on the Sass Farm south of the Lamker School in Monona Township. Ed served as an MP in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957, spending most of that time at the Continental Command at Fort Monroe, Virginia. When he returned to farming, he remodeled and built buildings, including a barn, which was featured in the Cedar Rapids Gazette on April 14, 1968. After his fathers death, Ed purchased the farm from his mother. Edward held family as one of lifes most precious blessings and enjoyed visiting with his many relatives, neighbors and friends. Ed is survived by his wife, Linda; his two daughters and sons-in-law and their families, Kim and Joe McCarty, Andrew, Samuel and Grant and Linda and Rod Michalski, Ashley, Chelsea and Lindsey; one sister and brother-in-law and families, Carol and George Howe, Mike, Chris (Lori), Danielle (Roger) Hein, McKenna, Jessica, Justin and Jason and Andrea and son Tryston; his sister-in-law, Phoebe Sass and families, Jon and Lisa, Ryan and Jason, Eric and daughter Alexis and Marie; several cousins and their families. Edward was preceded in death by his twin brother Richard (age 5 days); his father William, his mother Marie and his brother William John. Private Funeral Services and Burial with Military Rites will be held Friday, May 28, 2004 at the Monona City Cemetery, Monona, Iowa. There will be a lunch open to the public on Friday, May 28, 2004 beginning at 12:30 PM at the Farmersburg Community Center.
