Gus 'August' Miller, 85, Elkader died Sunday, May 16, 2004, in Grand Itasca Hospital, Grand Rapids, MN, following a sudden illness. He is survived by his sons, John (Leta) Miller, Dubuque, Charles 'Chuck' (Dale) Miller, Goodland, MN, Gary (Shirley) Miller, Pengilly, MN, Mark (M'lou Brubaker) Miller, Goodland, MN; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one sister, Mabel Zurcher, Elkader. Friends may call from 1 - 3 PM on Saturday, May 22, 2004 at Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader. A private memorial service will be held following the visitation. Inurnment will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Elkader.

Burl was born
at Dundee, Iowa on August 2, 1928, to Henry and Ida (Lewis) Gibbs. He received his education at the Dundee school. On December 28, 1947, he married Hilda Sandhagen at Oneida at Hilda's parents home. They spent most of their married life in Manchester. Burl worked for the Gamble Store for fifteen years, the City of Manchester, Marion Sheet Metal, and for West Delaware Schools for ten years. Burl D. Gibbs died Friday, May 7, 2004, at Regional Medical Center, Manchester, after an extended illness. He was seventy-five years of age. Burl is survived by his wife, Hilda Gibbs of Manchester; five children, Robert and wife Lori of Epworth, Shirley Gibbs, Patty Palmer and husband Rick Palmer, Gary and wife Deb Gibbs all of Manchester, and Linda Holthaus of Edgewood; twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Burdette (Wanda) Gibbs of Dundee and Laverne (Joan) Gibbs of Nashua; and one sister, Alice Jean Bandy of Manchester. He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant son.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, watching western movies, and camping. He belonged to the Mountain Do'-ers Camping Club and a former member of the Manchester Volunteer Fire Department.

Erland S. Hauge, 74, of Elkader, IA, died Monday morning, October 25, 2004, at the Elkader Care Center, following a long illness. He was born
December 4, 1929, in Readstown, WI to Elmer and Sophia (Midthum) Hauge. He received his education in rural Wisconsin schools. Erland entered the US Air Force on November 25, 1950, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on November 24, 1954. He was united in marriage to Joyce Ann Campbell on April 21, 1956 in Viola, WI. Ten children were born
to this union. Erland’s work at a creamery in Wisconsin transferred him to Elkader where he and his family made their home. After the creamery in Elkader closed, he began working for Huggins DX Station. After a few years he began working for Miller’s Dairy and later the Gunder Cheese Factory, where he retired. He loved to go bowling, hunting and fishing and was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. Survivors include his children, Carol Hauge, Elkader, Susan Welsh, Jesup, Robin Hauge, Elkader, Heidi (Bill) Cox, Ottumwa, Michael (Shana) Hauge, Elkader, Melissa (Scott) Fields, Elk Run Heights, Patty (Larry) Pape, Edgewood and Trevor Hauge, Jesup; eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four brothers, Ivan Hauge, Viroqua, WI, Arden Hauge, Silver Lake, WI, Allen (Louise) Hauge, Geneva, IL and John (Betty) Hauge, Ferryville, WI and three sisters, Shirley Atkins, Milwaukee, WI, Pauline Skrede, Kenosha, WI and Sandra (Herman) Sime, Ferryville, WI. He was preceded in death by his wife on November 4, 1994; two sons, Mark and Brent, a brother, Kenneth Hauge and three sisters, Dorothy Owen, Thelma Zitzner and Marlene Emerson.

January 5, 1911, on the family farm in Wagner Township, to Monroe and Louise (Wagner) Henkes. She was baptized October 1, 1911, by Pastor Henry Rabe and confirmed on May 16, 1937, by Pastor H.M. Adix both at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg. Alberta attended Gooding Country School in Farmers burg through eighth grade. She held various jobs over the years. Alberta enjoyed caring for nieces and nephews, spending time with family, quilting and helping the WELCA with quilts. She loved flowers and gardening. Survivors include two brothers and one sister, Alton Henkes, Elkader, Helen Krambeer, Luana, Calvin (Shirley) Henkes, Farmersburg; one sister-in-law, Glenda Henkes, Monona and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Jeanette Schmidt, in 1952; one brother, Vernis Henkes; one sister, Marietta Scheffert; two brothers-in-law, Virgil Scheffert and Arno Krambeer and two nieces Connie Jurging and Carmen Schrader.

December 31, 1950 in McGregor, IA to Allan and Betty (Livingston) Engelhardt. She was baptized and confirmed at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader. She graduated from Elkader High School and then obtained her C.N.A. certificate. Marsha worked at the Elkader Care Center for seven years. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She loved animals of all kinds. Surviving is her mother, Betty Engelhardt, Elkader, two children, Christine (Mark) Berns, Farmersburg, James Grocholski, Volga; one grandson and one sister, Joyce Engelhardt, Elkader. Marsha was preceded in death by her father on August 31, 2002 and one brother, Mark Allan Engelhardt in 1954.

Virginia M. Thein, 80, Colesburg, went home to be with our Lord, after a short illness, at Mercy Health Center, Dubuque on Sunday, October 17, 2004. She was born
February 8, 1924, daughter of Joseph and Hilda (Fangman) Welchert at Dubuque. She was united in marriage to Lorraine (Larry) Thein on January 23, 1946. Nine children were born
to this union. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Colesburg the American Legion, TOPS, and the Happy Homemaker’s Club. She taught CCD for many years at St. Michael’s, Garber and St. Patrick’s, Colesburg. She loved her children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren unconditionally and never missed a birthday for any of them. She will be missed by her family and her many, many friends. Surviving are her daughters, Sue (Jack) Galle, Dubuque, Sandy (Melvin) Freisinger, Dubuque, Georgia (Mark) Brown, Dyersville, Judy (Ron) Wolf, Dubuque, Jill (Michael) Zearley, Manchester, Sylvia (Bill) Kluesner, Dubuque; her sons, Larry (Kim) Thein, Colesburg, Pat (Jeanette) Thein, Colesburg, Michael (Peggy) Thein, Dyersville; twenty seven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pat Ahmann, Dubuque and Jane Welsh, Rockford, IL. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Lorraine (Larry); a grandson, Jeffrey Galle and three brothers, Eldon, Irvin and Don. A memorial fund has been established.

Leighton Julius Bente, 90, died Monday, October 11, 2004, at the Elkader Care Center following a long illness. He was born
on November 22, 1913, on the Bente Century Farm to Mike and Rose (Dettmann) Bente. Leighton was baptized and confirmed at Peace Church, where he was a life time member. Leighton attended country school until the family moved to town, where he attended Elkader Public School. He was united in marriage to Ellen Leuchtenmacher on November 22, 1940 by Rev. Paul Kitterer. They were married for sixty three years. Leighton was a farmer all of his life. He loved music. Survivors include his wife and three children, Robert (Verla) Bente, Garnavillo, Ruth (Gordon) Teggatz, Cedar Rapids, Janice (Jim) Allison, Waukon; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Bente, Independence, KS; nieces, nephews and many friends. Leighton was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Duane Bente.
