Frances M. Yuska was born icon to Harold and Flora (Taylor) Kristensen on August 15, 1926, in Hudson, Iowa. She was raised and educated in the area, graduating from Hudson High School. Fran was united in marriage to Alvin ”Al” Yuska on March 20, 1948, in Hudson. Two daughters were born icon to this union. Together they resided in Newton, Waterloo and in 1959 they moved to Manchester where together they owned and operated Yuska True Value Hardware for twenty-three years. Fran died on Sunday, October 10, 2004, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester after a courageous battle with cancer. She was seventy-eight years of age. Survivors include two daughters, Connie Yuska and her husband Richard Bildstein of Chicago, Illinois, and Mary Yuska and her husband Mark Sheridan of Plymouth, Minnesota; three step-grandchildren, Leah, Jayson, and Laura Bildstein; one sister, Norma (Ted) Woodward of San Bernadino, California; and one brother, Kenneth (Marcy) Kristensen of Hudson. Fran was preceded in death by her husband Al, September 7, 2002; and her parents.

Fran was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was a great mother who enjoyed the Iowa State Cyclones, Chicago Cubs, and golf. She also was “Queen Mother” of the Red Hat Society in Manchester and Mesa, Arizona.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Comfort or the First Presbyterian Church (USA).

Mildred F. Harden

Mildred F. Harden was born icon September 17, 1907, in Manchester to James and Emma (Michael) McCusker. She attended school at Milo #1 and graduated from Manchester High School in 1925. She received her normal teachers training certificate from Upper Iowa Teachers College in Fayette. Mildred taught in Delaware County rural school for twenty-eight years and was a farm implement bookkeeper for twelve years. Mildred was married to O. Cecil Harden on April 18, 1936, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Dubuque. She was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church (USA) and Crescent Rebekah Lodge #142. Mildred will be remembered as one who enjoyed her family, teaching, gardening, flowers, playing cards (especially cribbage), traveling and reading. Mildred passed away on Saturday, October 9, 2004, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester following a brief illness. She was ninety-seven years of age. Survivors include two grandsons, Dana L. Jordison and Kyle W. Jordison; two great-grandchildren, Gena and Braden Jordison all of Oklahoma; two nephews, Edwin Bishop of Manchester, and Bill Bishop of Guttenberg; three nieces, Jean Wilson of Hopkinton, LaRue Thompson of Delhi, and Connie Boe of Cedar Rapids; two foster nephews, Bill Brauer of Manchester and Paul Brauer of Marion; one foster niece, Joan McMurrin of Manchester and special friends Dennis and Judy Gudenkauf and their family of Manchester. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband O. Cecil Harden, January 9, 2003 her parents; her daughter, Vera VanArsdel; a grandson, Daniel Jordison; a sister, Marie Ostrander; two brothers, Leo and B. James McCusker; her foster parents, William and Winnie Brauer; foster brother, Paul Brauer; and two foster nephews, Larry and Jim Brauer.

R. Dean Paris was born icon March 7, 1927, in Manchester to Phil and Mildred (Maxwell) Paris. He was raised in the area and attended Oneida High School. He farmed until 1974 when he entered Agribusiness, Paris & Sons grain and fertilizer in Masonville until his retirement. Dean was united in marriage to Mary Jane McQuillen on February 10, 1948. She passed away in 1992. Dean’s hobbies were fishing, golfing, and spending time with his family. Survivors include his two sons, Tom (Deb) Paris of Masonville, and Joe (Linda) Paris of Lamont; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; special friend Emma Kennedy of Manchester; daughter-in-law, Mary Jo Paris Brown of Arlington; one sister, Barbara McMahon of Manchester; and two sisters-in-law, Gwyenth “Gwy” Paris of Yuba City, California, and Velma Paris of San Luis Obispo, California. Dean was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane; two sons, Steve Paris in 1990, and Dennis Paris in 1965; and two brothers, Donald Paris and Russ Paris.

Lloyd J. Rentschler, 81, of rural Garber, died Wednesday night, October 6, 2004, at his home following a sudden illness. He was born icon December 8, 1922, near Garber to Delbert and Ina (Livingston) Rentschler. He graduated from Elkport High School in 1939. He was united in marriage to Bernadine Smock on November 16, 1945, in Garber. Three children were born icon to this union. They made their home in the Garber area where Lloyd farmed for many years. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #67 of Colesburg and the N.E. IA Farm & Antique Association. Survivors include his children, Linda (Lorace) Amling, Dubuque, Randy (Carol) Rentschler, Hiawatha and Monte (Susan) Rentschler, La Crosse, WI; six grandchildren, Richard (Brenda) and Robert Amling and Allyssa, Scott (Chaquia), Ann and Thomas Rentschler; three great-grandchildren, Emma Amling, Devin Rentschler and Khiah Rentschler and a sister, Cleo (Robert) Singleton, San Antonio, TX. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, his wife on February 21, 2004, and a brother, LaVerl.

Raymond George Ruegnitz, 95, of Strawberry Point, IA, formerly of Elkport, died Tuesday morning, October 5, 2004 at the Lutheran Home in Strawberry Point, following a long illness. He was born icon July 3, 1909 near Elkport to George and Rosana (Enderes) Ruegnitz. He graduated from Littleport High School. He was united in marriage to Ruth Meyer on June 17, 1935 at Hope Lutheran Church in Littleport. Ray lived in and farmed his home farm all of his life until moving to Strawberry Point. He was a life long member of Hope Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He loved to garden and fish. Survivors include his daughter, Janet (Doug) Vittitoe, Marion; three grandchildren, Lori (Steve) Bozanek, Marion, Tami Vittitoe, Marion and Tony (Julie) Vittitoe, Cedar Rapids; five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruth on January 9, 2004, three brothers, Roy, Ransom and Kenneth and a sister, Ruth Jessen.

Howard G. Kuehl, 78, of Elkader, died Monday, October, 4, 2004, at his home, following a long illness. He was born icon August 23, 1926, in Boardman Township on the family Century farm. He was the son of Fred and Hilda (Tangeman) Kuehl. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace United Church of Christ. Howard graduated from Elkader High School and attended Elkader Jr. College for a semester until he went home to help his dad on the farm. He married M. Maxine Lenth of St. Olaf at Norway Lutheran Church, St. Olaf. Four children were born icon to this union. He purchased the farm in 1955, and farmed until he retired. He sold the farm in 2003, and moved into Elkader. Howard and Maxine celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1999 with family and friends at Brad and Kim’s home. He served on the church council at Peace United Church of Christ and was a 4-H leader for the Worthwhile 4-H Club. Survivors include his wife, Maxine, Elkader; a son, Bruce (Jean) Kuehl, North Liberty and two daughters, Diane (Dan) Collins, Elkader and Debra (Pat) Stickley, Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Brandon Kuehl, Brian Collins, Darrin (Colleen) Collins, Stephanie Collins, Tyler, Hannah and Jared Kuehl and Dalton Stickley; three sisters, Ivanell Woods, Elkader, Myrna McKenna, Laguna Hills, CA and Lois Bennett, Cedar Rapids; a brother, Don (Coralinn) Kuehl, Fredrick, MD and nieces and nephews. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Brad and two brothers, Harold and Orrin.
