Harold Adolph Weber, 90, of Volga, died Thursday, September 02, 2004, at the Edgewood Convalescent Center in Edgewood following a long illness. He was born
in rural Clayton County on March 29, 1914, to Louis and Bessie (Duff) Weber. On June 4, 1938, he was united in marriage to Genevieve Otterbeck. Nine children were born
to this union. Harold and Gen farmed in Clayton County until Harold’s retirement. Since his retirement, Harold has kept busy visiting with family, helping with family projects, woodworking, mowing lawns, blowing snow, going to dances and tinkering. One of his prize possessions was his ’36 Chevy pickup. Friends enjoyed Harold’s unique sense of humor and listening to his stories. Survivors include his children, Joe Weber, Strawberry Point, Barb (Chuck) Burgin, Volga, Mary Moyle, Wadena, Theresa (Keith) Polkow, Volga, Tom (Mary) Weber, Volga, Terry (Regina) Weber, Volga, Tim (Viva) Weber, Oelwein, Kenny (Lois) Weber, Volga; thirty eight-grandchildren; sixty four great-grandchildren; brother Leo Weber, King, WI and son-in-law, Dan Burrack, Wadena. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Gen on September 8, 1985; daughter, Susan, son-in-law, Les Moyle, daughter-in-law, Della Weber, daughter-in-law, Sharon Weber; grandsons, Donald Weber, Cory Weber; granddaughter, Rachel and several brothers and sisters.

Derryl Duane Leonhart, 79, Elgin, died Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at University Hospitals, Iowa City following a brief illness. He was born
March 4, 1925, (the day Calvin Coolidge and Charles Dawes were inaugurated into office) at Wadena to Peter Leroy and Alla Austa (Davis) Leonhart. He graduated from Upper Iowa University, Fayette. Derryl was stationed with the U.S. Navy during WW II on the U.S.S. John Chandeleur at the age of seventeen as a gunner’s mate. The 1800 men on board were referred to as “pollywogs” until they crossed the equator, they then became “hardshells”. The Chandeleur saw duty in south France, where it tended sea planes. They went from France to Guadalcanal and then islands in the Pacific, including Japan, just three days before the invasion there. He was united in marriage to Helen Biedermann in April, 1944 in San Francisco. Three children were born
to this union. Derryl and Helen were married sixty years. Derryl taught American History and Government at Linnville (three years), Joyce (six years) and Elgin (twenty-eight years). He coached track, baseball, basketball and was student council advisor. His teams won over 250 basketball games. He enjoyed the Chicago Cubs, Iowa and Upper Iowa Athletic teams. He has visited forty five of the state capitols and has a coffee mug from each one. He was an avid coin collecter and collector of match box cars, key chains, pens, pencils and stamps. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren. Derryl will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He was a member of the Elgin Town Council and the West Clermont Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife Helen Leonhart, Fayette, his constant loving companion until her stroke in 2002; son John (Karen) Leonhart, Urbandale; daughter, Lauralea (Craig) Wander, Marion; five grandchildren, Alson, Sarah, Emily Leonhart, Urbandale; Brenda, (Jason) Moen, Owatonna, MN; Eric Leonhart, Owatonna, MN; one great-grandson, Brandon Moen, Owatonna, MN; his special pal, Jennifer Strong, Elgin; sisters, Mary Dicy (Leonhart) Reisner, Oronoco, MN; Genevieve (Leonhart) Probert, Elgin and daughter-in-law, Deb Leonhart, Owatonna, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son David Leonhart and brothers and sisters Vayle Leonhart, Elizabeth (Leonhart) Stockwell, Donald Leonhart, Crystal (Leonhart) Welch and Woodrow Leonhart. Robert Gene McWilliams was born
on April 30, 1929 in Bloomfield, Iowa to Vern and Velma (Schields) McWilliams. He was raised and educated in the Bloomfield area. On July 15, 1950 he married Helen Leyda in Harrison Arkansas. He then entered the United States Army during the Korean conflict. They moved to Manchester in 1959 and Bob traveled for Port Huron Machinery for several years before starting his own carpet laying service. He also worked for the Regional Housing Authority, retiring in 1991. Bob died on Monday evening, August 23, 2004, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester, following an extended illness. He was seventy-five years of age. Survivors include his wife, Helen McWilliams of Manchester; five children, Stephen (Carol) McWilliams of Manchester, Cheryl Carradus Wheeler of Manchester, Sheila (Tim) Hall of Peosta, Stanley (Mary) McWilliams of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Scott (Cheryl) McWilliams of Manchester; ten grandchildren, Keli, Ashley, and Brian McWilliams, Jill, Joni, and Jana Carradus, Cullen and Casey Hall, Andrew and Emily McWilliams; one great-grandson, Cain McWilliams; and two brothers, Harold McWilliams of Osage and Raymond “Dean” (Jean) McWilliams of Olathe, Kansas. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald McWilliams and Charles McWilliams; and two sisters, Evelyn Kinsinger and Virginia Swift.
Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was past church trustee, was past president of the West Delaware Boosters Club, and Boy Scout Leader. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, enjoyed woodworking and his grandchildren.

Katherine Marjorie was born
February 24, 1920, on the family farm east of Ryan to Thomas and Mae (Sullivan) Fleming. She attended St. John’s School in Ryan, graduating in 1937. After graduation she enrolled at Mount Mercy Junior College in Cedar Rapids receiving a teachers certificate in 1939. She taught school at Elma, Iowa, for one year. She moved to Denver, Colorado to join her family in 1940. Marjorie took business office training and worked for an insurance company. In 1942 she returned to Cedar Rapids and worked in the office at the Collins Radio Company. Marjorie met Robert Stewart Heiderstadt in Denver before WWII. They were married on January 25, 1944 at the Stockton Army Air Corps Base Chapel at Stockton, California. Four children were born
to this union. They have resided in Manchester since 1953. Robert died in 2002. Marjorie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, St. John’s Study Club, and the Tuesday Nighters. She enjoyed reading, family, and music. Marjorie died at Regional Medical Center, Manchester on Monday August 23, 2004, after a brief illness. She was eighty-four years of age. Survivors include her four children, Richard (Janice) Heiderstadt of Charlottesville, Virginia, Carol (Reuben) Tulikangas of Baxter, Minnesota, Ellen Scherrer of Savage, Minnesota, and Kathleen (Jeff Dodds) Heiderstadt of Port Matilda, Pennsylvania; and five grandchildren, Nicolas Heiderstadt, Alysia Scherrer, Megan Tulikangas, Chelsea Dodds, and Kaitlyn Dodds. Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; infant twins, Joseph and Mary; and two sisters, Lucille Fleming and Mary Fleming.

Betty Ruth Schroeder, 68, of Elkader, died suddenly Monday, August 23, 2004, at her home. She was born
February 23, 1936, in Guttenberg, IA to Delbert Henry and Marie Emily (Strauss) Schroeder. She was baptized on March 15, 1936, at St. John Lutheran Church, Guttenberg. She graduated from Monona High School. Betty worked at various café’s in Elkader including Angie’s for fourteen years. She made wedding dresses and quilts for family and friends. She enjoyed puzzles and spending time with family. Betty would walk to get the mail, where she knew everyone and had a friendly smile and hello. She never judged anyone, and loved people for who they were. Survivors include two sisters, Anna Eichacker, Dubuque and Karen Havlicek, Monona; nieces and nephews, Robin (Larry) Hovseth, Omaha, NE, Krista (Roy) Goodman, Dubuque, Daniel (Pam) Havlicek, Monona and Sally Cook, Monona and several great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, her mother, who was also her best friend, two brothers, Dean and Robert Schroeder, one niece and one nephew.

L. Irene Kohls, 96, of Hazleton, formerly of Elgin, died Sunday, August 22, 2004, at her home in Hazleton, IA following a brief illness. She was born
July 4, 1908, in Fayette County, West Union to Edwin B and Eliza R. (Thompson) Grimes. She attended rural school and graduated from West Union High School in 1927. At the age of thirteen, she was baptized by her cousin, Rev. Stanley Gillette in the First Baptist Church, West Union. Irene taught a Sunday school class of young girls while a member there. She was a member in West Union until 1945, when she joined the First Baptist Church, Elgin. On May 21, 1938, she was united in marriage to Richard Kohls. Two children were born
to this union, Donald Edwin and Ruth Ann. Irene enjoyed reading, making scrapbooks of various kinds, gardening, flowers, baking many cookies and sharing with others. Survivors include her son, Donald Kohls, Hazleton; daughter, Ruth Ann (Tom) Hayzlett, Hazleton; grandchildren, Darin (Melinda) Hayzlett, Independence, Katie (Dan) Trimble, Fairbank, Jerry (Jennifer) Hayzlett, Aurora and great-grandchildren, Christopher and Nicole Hayzlett, Independence. Irene was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother and three sisters.
