Hulda Minnie Henrietta (Kalke) Baade, 93, died Tuesday, August 03, 2004, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, following a brief illness. She was born
January 12, 1911, the youngest child of thirteen children, to Fritz and Anna (Mahnke) Kalke on the home farm in Read Township. The DOT Garage is built now on part of the home place. Hulda was baptized in the Lutheran faith, June 4, 1911, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center, where she was also confirmed in German on March 25, 1923. She attended grade school at the County Home School. After completing sixth grade, she started working for different families as a housemaid and also milked cows when necessary. She returned to her parent’s home, helping them with the farming for two years. Hulda was married to Clarence William Baade, Farmersburg on November 28, 1929, at the bride’s home in Read Township. A terrible blizzard occurred in the area after their 4:00 wedding. Four children were born
to this union, Dorothy Ann, Cletus Clarence, Judith Clarene and Lorna Mae. Clarence & Hulda lived on various farms in the Elkader area. In 1943, they purchased the Leo Keleher family farm in Boardman Township, where their son and daughter-in-law, Cletus and Zala, and Hulda’s grandson, Daryl Baade and family now reside. Hulda enjoyed farming and helped her husband with field work as well as the animal chores. She cooked many large meals for threshing and silo filling crews. Clarence, Hulda, Judy and Lorna moved to Elkader in 1961, to the Tavis home that they had purchased in 1959. Hulda was a charter member of both the Boardman Friendship Club and the Bethany Lutheran Church. She enjoyed volunteering at her church and the Elkader Meal Site. She loved gardening, canning, growing beautiful flowers, crocheting and sewing. Many people have been the recipients of her crocheted doilies and have admired her beautiful flowers on East Bridge Street. She loved taking care of her family and feeding them whenever they visited. Hulda is survived by her children, Dorothy (Mrs. Robert) Bushkofsky, Cletus and Zala Baade, Judith (Mrs Marlo) Schnurstein, Lorna and Dennis Christeleit; eleven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three step-great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence, on September 10, 1977, two sons-in-law, Marlo Schnurstein, July 3, 1979 and Robert Bushkofsky, September 9, 1982 and one granddaughter, Tammy Christeleit, July 21, 1993. Alice Marie Kalke, 75, Clayton Center, died Tuesday, August 3, 2004, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader following a short illness. She was born
on March 8, 1929, at Plymouth, Indiana, to Raymond and Elsie Olive Schrom Davis. At the age of ten, Alice and her family moved to Central City, IA, where she graduated from high school. She was united in marriage to Edwin Kalke on June 7, 1950 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center. Three children were born
to this union. They farmed and made their home south of Clayton Center. In 1977, Edwin and Alice built a new home in Clayton Center where they continued to make their home. Edwin died on October 12, 1987. Alice continued living in Clayton Center until May of this year, due to ill health, she moved in with Paul and Gloria Olson. Alice was a long time active member of Zion Lutheran Church, she enjoyed cooking, making afghans, watching the Chicago Cubs and Iowa/Indiana basketball. She also enjoyed helping her son-in-law at his appliance store in Elkader. Survivors include her daughter, Gloria (Paul) Olson, Elkader, her son, Lorraine (Linda) Kalke, Decorah; two grandchildren, Lisa Kalke and Patricia Kalke and fiancé, Steve Wilkes, all of Decorah; brothers and sisters, Mary Garrett, Monticello, Martha (John) Knupp, Marion, Rosemond (Ronald) Campbell, Marion, Raymond (Beverly) Davis, Stanwood, Jean (Phillip) Goodall, Cedar Rapids, Paul (Bette) Davis, Cedar Rapids, Charles (Edna) Davis, Cedar Rapids, nieces, nephews and friends. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on October 12, 1987, and a daughter, Gloria’s twin sister, Linda Lou.

Robert John Schupanitz, 69, of Elgin, IA, died Monday morning, August 2, 2004 at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union, following a long illness. He was born
June 7, 1935 in Cedar Rapids to Robert and Cathryn (Shissel) Schupanitz. He attended St. Peter Catholic Schools in Clermont. As a youngster, Robert worked with his parents at their grocery in Clermont. He later worked for Elsheimer Meat Co. in West Union for a time. He was custodian for St. Peter’s as well as opened graves for the church cemetery for many years. Survivors include his brother, Dr. Gerald (Joanne) Schupanitz, Cedar Rapids and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Dolores Osweiler.

Lauren Edward Easton, 90, Manchester, formerly of Strawberry Point and Lamont areas, died Sunday, August 1, 2004, at Regional Medical Center, Manchester following a long illness. He was born
June 7, 1914, Strawberry Point to Edward and Ada (Brandenburg) Easton. He was united in marriage to Eva (Cornwell) Ingles. She preceded in him in death on October 9, 1995. Lauren was a farm laborer for various farmers for many years. He enjoyed listening to Lawrence Welk and watching western movies. Survivors include three step children, Richard Ingles, Manchester, Roy Ingles, Greeley and Katherine Sickles, Manchester; twelve step-grandchildren; thirty great-great-grandchildren; a special friend, Susan Price Crawford, Lamont and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a great-great-granddaughter and several brothers and sisters.

Dr. Robert Arthur Krieger was born
July 28, 1925, in Brewster, Minnesota, the son of Reverend Henry and Hattie (Knopke) Krieger. He was baptized as an infant and confirmed into the Lutheran faith on May 28, 1939. Robert moved with his family at age 8 when his father accepted a call to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Ireton, Iowa in 1934. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 during WWII. Robert then entered Morningside College for Pre-optometric training and received his doctorate in Optometry at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis. He practiced for thirty years. On January 17, 2001, Robert married Genevieve Sumner. He is survived by his wife, Genevieve of The Villages, Florida; two stepsons, Richard L. Sumner of Orlando, Florida and Burton Sumner of Cedar Rapids; five nieces; and one nephew. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Lois of Sioux City, Elinor of Seward, Nebraska, and Helen of Sioux City; two brothers, Ted of Ireton and Reverend Herbert of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania.

Ruby Ilene Bowers was born
September 3, 1920, in Lamont to Max and Floy (Lee) Morehouse. She received her education and graduated from Lamont High School. She was united in marriage to Delbert Bowers on June 20, 1948, in Dubuque. Two sons were born
to this union. She was a homemaker and together with her husband they farmed east of Manchester and southwest of Greeley until 1975, when they sold the farm. In 1975, they moved to Monticello. Ruby enjoyed playing cards, checkers, walks, riding he bike, and attending the Jones County Fair. Ruby died at her home on Wednesday, July 28, 2004, following an extended illness. She was eighty-three years of age. Survivors include her two sons, Richard Bowers of Manchester and Dean (Nancy) Bowers of Springville; one brother Tom (Jackie) Morehouse of Manchester; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Marvin Hawker of Manchester. Preceding Ruby in death was her husband, Delbert; one brother, Leslie Morehouse; two sisters, Joyce Hawker and her twin sister Gail Morehouse; her daughter-in-law, Mildred Anna Bowers; and one great-granddaughter in infancy, Brittney Bowers.
Steven Jr. Mitchel

Steven Jr. was born
December 6, 1930, in Elmhurst, Illinois to Steven and Ann (Keosky) Mitchel. He was raised and educated in the area graduating from the York High School in Elmhurst. He attended college in Elmhurst and then worked as a police officer for the city. Steven entered the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict serving honorably as an X-ray technician. Steven was united in marriage to Kathy Hefner on September 10, 1977 in Winfield, Illinois. Three children were born
to this union. Steven retired as Vice President of Domestic Sales for Spraying Systems in Wheaton, Illinois. Steven and Kathy have resided in Delhi for the past ten years. Steven died suddenly Monday evening, July 19, 2004 at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester. He was seventy-three years of age. Survivors include his wife Kathy Mitchel of Delhi; four children, Greg (Sue) Mitchel of Wheaton, Illinois, James (Jill) Mitchel of Naperville, Illinois, Robert Mitchel of Chicago, Illinois, and Kathryn Mitchel of Chicago, Illinois; and two brothers, James (Kathleen) Mitchel and George (Yvonne) Mitchel all of Anamosa, Iowa.
