Elmira Edith Emelie Cordes, 92, Monona, died Thursday, July 22, 2004 at Central Community Hospital following a brief illness. She was born
in Giard Township near Monona on November 23, 1911, to Arno John and Amanda (Kruse) Kaiser. Elmira was baptized into the Lutheran faith on December 3, 1911, by Rev. Wapler and was later confirmed on August 13, 1925, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona by Rev. Daugs. She received her education in the Monona public school graduating with the class of 1929. She attended Iowa State Teacher’s College (now UNI) and taught three years in rural schools. She later attended Luther College and Upper Iowa University. She was united in marriage to Edward D. Cordes on January 1, 1934, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, by Rev. A. Daugr. Four children were born
to this union. Throughout the years, she helped her husband in their produce and hatchery business. After her family was raised, she taught for eleven years in the Postville school system. During this time she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Upper Iowa University with a degree in Science. Elmira held membership in the Monona Woman Club for sixty-eight years, acting as its president and holding many offices. She was elected Clayton County president of the Iowa Federation of Women’s Clubs and held numerous state offices. She was president of the Monona Public Library board. She was instrumental in organizing the local Cub Scout troop, and was the first den mother. For thirty two years Elmira taught Sunday school and was appointed an instructor of the Lutheran TTT program (Teacher Teaches Teachers) on the state and national levels for ten years, demonstrating Sunday school teaching methods. Her church activities were dear to her heart. She was twice president of the Women of the church, the leader of a Junior Mission group on the local and district level, leader of the education department, Cradle Roll, Mother’s club and a helper in Luther League. She enjoyed Bible study and was a member of Faith Circle. A great joy was her visit to the Holy Land and Greece with a church group. Elmira was interested in reading, history, studies, teaching and children, and bridge. Elmira was grateful to her family and friends for their help in her later years. Survivors include one son, Edward Douglas (Paula) Cordes, Connersville, IN; one daughter-in-law, Lois Cordes, Strawberry Point; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one step-grandchild; two step-great-grandchildren and one brother-in-law, Howard Belden, Spirit Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on November 23, 1987, two sons, Norman Leigh Cordes and one son and one daughter in infancy and two sisters, Gladys Hillman Loveland and Laverne Belden.

Cheryl LeAnn McNally, 56, Monona, died Wednesday, July 21, 24, at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, WI, following a long illness. She was born
on June 22, 1948, in Postville to Walter and Marjorie (Rolfs) White. Cheryl graduated from Postville High School. She was united in marriage to Theodore (Ted) McNally on November 12, 1966, at Zion Reformed United Church of Christ, Waukon. Two children were born
to this union. Cheryl was an active member of the United Methodist Church Women and the American Legion Auxiliary. She worked for Interstate Power Company, Waukon and was a Mary Kay beauty consultant while in Hawaii. She was the chief cook and bottle washer who enjoyed working on the family farm, crocheting, sewing, cooking, baking and taking care of livestock. Survivors include her husband, Ted; two children, Christine (Jason) Woods, and Douglas (Peggy) McNally; four grandchildren, Josh and Cale Woods and Dani and Samantha McNally, all of Monona; her mother, Marjorie White-Kruger, Postville; three brothers, Gary (Anne) White, Dickinson, ND, Kermit (Cathy) White, Postville, Dan (Nooch) White, Postville and one sister, Judy (Steve) Houdek, Anamosa. She was preceded in death by her father, her paternal and maternal grandparents; one brother and sister in infancy, Richard and Karen White.

James E. McNally, 74, of rural Monona, IA, died Sunday morning, July 18, 2004, at Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien, WI, following a sudden illness. He was born
November 29, 1929 in Paint Creek Township to James and Emma (Larson) McNally. James entered the U.S. Army on March 5, 1947, and was honorably discharged on August 7, 1948. He was united in marriage to Loretta Sudol on October 9, 1951, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Monona. Four children were born
to this union. They farmed in the Monona area for many years. James enjoyed farming and being outdoors, spending time with his grandson and he was a life long avid Chicago Cubs fan. Survivors include three daughters, Linda McNally, Monona, Lisa (Jim) Peterman, Monona and Lori (Dan) Schulte, Anamosa; a son, James McNally, Decorah; five grandchildren, Mike McNally, Nik, Josh and Kolin Schulte and Hunter Fletcher and his sister, Eldine (Dale) Fredendall, Independence, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife on March 27, 1996.

Charlotte Jean Montour, 82, of Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of St. Olaf, died Friday, July 16, 2004, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines, following a brief illness. She was born
December 20, 1921, in Alden, IA to Wayne and Cecile (Palmer) Hunter. She graduated from Littleport High School. She was united in marriage to Gilbert E. Montour on February 6, 1942. They lived in various places throughout their married life due to Gilbert’s military career. They retired to St. Olaf in 1971. She was an active member of Norway Lutheran Church; she enjoyed gardening, flowers, cooking, reading, Bridge Club and crossword puzzles. She will be remembered as one who loved to visit and be with people. Gilbert preceded her in death in 1995. For the past five years, Charlotte has lived with her son Robert in Des Moines. Survivors include two sons, Robert Montour and Greg (Jan) Montour all of Des Moines; two grandchildren, Garrett and Grant; three great-grandchildren, Jaclyn, Geoffrey and Drake; a sister, Dorothy (Lowell) Zapf, Littleport and a brother, Kenneth (Rosina) Hunter, Estherville. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Marie Freidericka Miene, 95, Monona, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at the Great River Care Center, McGregor, following a brief illness. She was born
on September 19, 1908, in rural Winneshiek County to August and Caroline (Diederick) Schutte. Marie attended rural schools through eighth grade, and then attended and graduated from Postville High School. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. On May 20, 1931, she was united in marriage to Frederick Carl Miene at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. They were the proud parents of one son. Marie taught rural school for five years and helped on the family farm. She enjoyed reading, sewing, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. She and Frederick ran the John Deere business in Monona for over thirty years. Survivors include one son, Robert (Carol) Miene, Monona, three grandchildren, Fred, Dan and Bobby Miene; one great-granddaughter, Briana Miene and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Elmer, Helmuth and Walter Schutte and three sisters, Amanda Sander, Florence Miene and Velma Block.

Kathryn (Kay) Marie (McCullow) Carroll 87, Monona, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Thornton Manor, Lansing, following a brief illness. She was born
in Calmar on July 27, 1916, to Charles and Mary (Zender) McCullow. She graduated from Calmar High School in 1934. Kathryn McCullow married Gerald John Carroll on October 10, 1939, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Monona. Kay was a wonderful and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Kay loved to embroider, garden and bird watching. She worked alongside her husband, Jerry, at his occupations, particularly the Carroll Studio and The Billboard. They raised eight children. Surviving her are sons Dave and his wife Connie, Poway, CA, Steve and his wife Vanessa, San Diego, CA; daughters, Kathleen Strub, Lansing, Marilyn Emerson and her husband Mike, Cedar Rapids, Marcia Carroll, Monona and Elizabeth Carroll, San Diego, CA; daughter-in-law Michele Carroll; fifteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen McCullow, Independence and sisters-in-law, Edythe Clarke and Mary Mullick. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Gerald on June 6, 2004; two sisters, Angela Peters and Patricia Johanningmeier; a daughter, Margaret (Peg) Beauregard in 1981; a son Paul, in 1997; a son-in-law, Ken Strub in 199; three granddaughters and two great-granddaughters.

Howard was born
April 4, 1929, at Rowley to Joe and Martha (Haxmeier) Zieser. He was raised and educated in the Monti area. Howard served honorably in the United States Army. Howard was united in marriage to Martha Rees in December 1971, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ryan. Two children were born
to this union. Howard was a self employed carpenter over the years. He also delivered Cedar Rapids Gazette to different communities. Howard died Saturday, July 10, 2004, at Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, Missouri, after a sudden illness. He was seventy-five years of age. Howard was a long-time member of the Knights of Pythian Lodge. Howard will be remembered as one who enjoyed fishing, gardening, mushroom hunting, and playing cards and games. Survivors include his wife, Martha of Manchester; one daughter, Kim (Dan) Assal of Lenexa, Kansas; one son, Dr. Kent (Dr. Shalomi) Zieser, San Antonio, Texas; two step-grandchildren Rachel and Jeremy Assal; and thirteen brothers and sisters Louis (Marge) Zieser of Independence, Jack (Patricia) Zieser of Ryan, Kenny (Rose) Zieser of Coggon, Sr. Delores Zieser of Hopkins, Minnesota, Sr. Josita Zieser of Storm Lake, Rosalyn Zieser of Colby, Wisconsin, James (Mary Jane) Zieser of Marion, Kathleen (Jerry) Callan of Manchester, Martin (Judy) Zieser of Marion, Phil (Marilyn) Zieser of Ryan, William (Eileen) Zieser of Leland, Janice (Paul) Hildebrand of Marion, and Pat (Richard) Cook of Manchester. Howard was preceded in death by his parents. The family prefers memorials to flowers.
