Rodney was born icon May 8, 1942 at Evergreen Hill Farm in Coffins Grove Township, Delaware County, Iowa to Ronald and Erma Mae Baumgartner. He graduated from the Dundee High School in 1959. Rodney then served honorably in the National Guard. He was united in marriage to Dianne Gearhart on February 14, 1962 at the United Methodist Church in Manchester. Three daughters were born icon to this union. Rodney and Dianne farmed near Dundee. They retired from farming in 2002. They have remained on the farm and wintered in Bonita Springs, Florida. Although Rodney retired from farming he never quit working. Rodney was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dundee and New Hope Ministry in Naples, Florida. He served on the Delaware County Extension Board, Farm Bureau Board, Good Neighbor Home Board, and Delaware County Conservation Board. Rodney was one who enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and working on wetland conservation projects. The Cubs and Hawkeyes were his favorite teams. Rodney died Friday, July 9, 2004 in Naples, Florida from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was sixty-two years of age. Survivors include his wife, Dianne of Dundee, Iowa; three daughters, Dr. Cynthia (Dr. Bill) Hoover of Bettendorf, Roxanne (Chris) Anderson of Coggon, and Georgia (Jan) Moorman of Manchester; five grandchildren, Roderick Hoover, Michael Hoover, and Lauren Hoover, Samantha Anderson, and Jackie Moorman; his mother, Erma Mae Baumgartner of Bonita Springs, Florida; one sister, Gloria Noble of Dundee; his mother-in-law, Lorraine Gearhart of Manchester; uncle, John (Gladys) Jennerjohn of Decorah; aunt Elsie Stamp of Cedar Falls; and several nieces, nephews and relatives. Rodney was preceded in death by his father, a brother-in-law, John “Bill” Noble, and father-in-law, Duane Gearhart.

Mary Dolores (Doris) Thurn

Mary Dolores (Doris) Thurn was born icon June 17, 1932, in Cascade to Austin and Regina (Kenneally) Alexander. She received her education at St. Martin’s School in Cascade and graduated in 1950. She was united in marriage to Donald Strief. Together they farmed. Donald died on April 16, 1978. She married Vic Thurn and he died April 29, 1981. Over the years she lived in Delhi, Edgewood, Elgin, and Manchester, Mary died Wednesday morning, July 7, 2004, at Living Center West, St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids after a short illness. She was seventy-two years of age. Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Emerson of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law Marie Alexander of Marion; several nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; and brother Raymond Alexander. The family would like to thank all Mary’s friends for their prayers, special friend Tilpher Bilden, and good neighbors Lillian & Martin Hillers.
Mary enjoyed volunteer work. She was active with the V.F.W. Auxiliary 6637, holding office as Conductress, Chaplain, Cancer Chairman, and Buddy Poppy Chairman. She was Auxiliary President from 1986-1990.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund for Mary has been established.

Roger William Fuller

Our beloved Roger William Fuller went to be with Jesus on July 6, 2004, at the age of seventy-nine, after losing a brief battle with cancer. Roger was born icon to William and Ora (Beaman) Fuller on January 3, 1925, in rural Manchester. Roger attended school through the eighth grade in Manchester. Roger accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior one Sunday afternoon while singing “Jesus Loves Me” at the age of six on the front porch of their family home. Roger married Betty Lou Hansel on January 25, 1943, in Kahoka, Missouri, and enlisted in the United States Army in the fall of 1943. Roger served in World War II in Europe. After the war, Roger returned home and began farming while doing many secondary jobs to support his family. Roger and Betty spent most of their married life on their farm northwest of Manchester. Boating and horses were a few of his hobbies in his younger years. Roger loved being with family and friends. Although retiring from farming twice, Roger never quit working. Roger attended First Baptist Church in Manchester. Roger is survived by his wife, Betty Lou (Hansel); three daughters, Trudy Ellen Moon and husband Jerry of Austin, Texas, Shirley Lee McGuire and husband Tim of Ankeny, Pamela Mae Tegeler and husband, George of Elkader; one son, Joseph Jay Fuller and wife Janice of Oskaloosa; ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Lloyd Fuller and wife Elsie of Camdenton, Missouri. Roger is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marjorie Barker; brother, Harold Fuller; and granddaughter, Muriah Tegeler.
Roger enlisted in the United States Army in the fall of 1943 and served in World War II in Europe.

Kathryn (Kay) Marie Carroll

Marie Blanche Ambrose, 92, Monona, died Friday, July 2, 2004, at the Great River Care Center, McGregor, following a long illness. Marie was born icon in rural Clayton County to John T. and Anna (Klima) Havlicek. She attended school in the rural area. On April 30, 1940, she was united in marriage to John Ambrose at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Monona. Seven children were born icon to this union. Marie is survived by four daughters, Caroline (Virgil) Lenth, St. Olaf, Mary Cuvelier, Waukon, Loretta (Terry) Sautter, Manchester, Linda Landt, McGregor; one son, Roger (Vickey) Ambrose, Marion; fifteen grandchildren and twenty two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one child at birth, a son, Robert; four grandchildren, Terry (T.J.) Sautter Jr. and Michael, Shauni and Casi Lauer and four brothers, Frank, Benjamin, Leo and John Havlicek.

Dorothy Elizabeth was born icon July 2, 1920, in rural Wellman, Iowa, to John & Sylvia (White) Lindsey. She attended rural school until moving to Iowa City at age seven. She graduated from Iowa City, City High High School in 1937. Dorothy was united in marriage to Wilbur Vernon Nead on November 18, 1939, at the Baptist Student Center in Iowa City. Together they lived in Iowa City, Boston, Massachusetts, Germany and in 1954 they moved to Manchester. Dorothy died Thursday, July 1, 2004, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester after a short illness. She was eighty-four years of age. Dorothy was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church where she held several offices with the United Methodist Women and was awarded a life membership pin. Survivors include two daughters, Sharon McCrabb and husband Richard and Sandra Ferguson and husband Roy all of Manchester; Eight grandchildren; and twenty-one great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Wilbur in 1982; one sister, Minnie Lindsey; and one brother, John Lindsey.

Dorothy R. Atwater Eckley, 94, of Manchester, died Tuesday morning, February 1, 2005, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester, following a long illness. She was born icon April 29, 1910, near Manchester to L. Burton and Sabra (Carpenter) Bishop. Survivors include her daughter, Carol (Bob) Brockmeyer, Manchester; son, Robert (Janet) Atwater, Seneca, SC; step-daughter, Donna (Jerome) Wood, Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Frank Bishop, Manchester and a sister, Verla Hakanson, Lu Verne.

Iva Alice McDowell was born icon April 23, 1917, in Newton Township, Buchanan County, Iowa, to George and Mary E. (Carradus) McDowell. She taught school in Delaware County for a number of years before moving to Cedar Rapids, where she was employed by Colonial Bakery for four years and for Rinderknecht Associates and R.W. Rinderknecht Company until retirement. Iva passed away at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester on Saturday, January 29, 2005, following an extended illness. Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews. Iva was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary McDowell; six brothers, George Leslie, Roy, Merle, Robert, Glenn, and Verle McDowell; and one sister, Arlene Kuhn.

Iva was a member of the United Methodist Church of Silver Creek and a charter member of the National Association of Women in Construction. She enjoyed to travel and was involved in genealogy.
