Catherine L. Degenford, 78, of Edgewood, IA, formerly of Elkader, died Thursday, January 27, 2005, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader, following a brief illness. She was born icon November 1, 1926, in Elkader to Leo and Anastasia (Downey) Cassutt. She graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in Elkader in 1944, and attended Elkader Junior College. In her earlier years, Catherine enjoyed playing the piano, singing and was part of a musical group for a time. She was united in marriage to John F. Degenford on April 21, 1949 in Elkader. Most of their married life was spent living in the Chicago suburbs where Catherine worked as an office manager. While in Elkader she was a member of the BPW Club, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, taught CCD classes, and was a member of the Guild. She also worked for the Buttery for a few years. After her husband’s death she moved to Edgewood, where she was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed playing cards and belonged to various Bridge clubs over the years. Family was very important to Catherine; her brothers and sisters were her closest friends. Survivors include her son, Jay and his wife Janet Degenford, Edgewood; grandchildren, Alicia and Emily Degenford; brothers and sisters, Florian (Joyce) Cassutt, Hudson, WI, Dorothy (Bob) Allen, Manchester, Jean (Bob) Hinds, Dubuque, and Jim Cassutt, Dubuque; a sister-in-law, Joanne Cassutt, Elkader, many nieces and nephews, and special friends, Don and Marge Jones of Edgewood. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John and two brothers, J.P. and Ray Cassutt.

Elizabeth Margaret was born icon on November 19, 1928, in Delhi, Iowa, to William and Adelaide (Gravel) Haas. She received her early education in Delhi and graduated from Earlville High School. Elizabeth was united in marriage to Donald Patrick Sullivan on February 28, 1949, in Ryan. Six children were born icon to this union. Together they farmed southeast of Ryan for two years and in 1951 moved and bought the Daniel’s farm north of Manchester. Donald passed away on November 5, 1995. Elizabeth has resided at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester for the last two years. Elizabeth was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Manchester. She enjoyed bingo, visiting, and dancing in her early years. Elizabeth died on Monday morning, January 24, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, following an extended illness. She was seventy-six years of age. Survivors include four sons and one daughter, Daniel (Sharren) Sullivan of Walker, Louisiana, David (Janet) Sullivan of Aurelia, Dennis (Marilyn) Sullivan of Edgewood, DeeAnn Sullivan and special friend Loras Sabers of Manchester, and D.J. (Carla) Sullivan of Manchester; fourteen grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a sister-in-law, Monica Sullivan of Cedar Rapids. Preceding Elizabeth in death were her parents, William and Adelaide Haas; her husband, Donald Sullivan; a daughter, Denise Sullivan on April 13, 2004; four brothers, Victor Haas, Joseph Haas, William Haas, and Hubert Haas; and a sister, Mary Haas.

She enjoyed bingo, visiting, and dancing in her early years. Elizabeth will be remembered as one who enjoyed working with her plants and flowers.

Grace Elizabeth Alderson, 100, of Strawberry Point, formerly of Volga, died Monday, January 24, 2005, at Northeast Iowa Christian Retirement Community in Strawberry Point. She was born icon August 2, 1904, in Osborne, IA to Fred and Caroline (Wolters) Stahl. She was united in marriage to Ellsworth Alderson on June 2, 1926, by Rev. Franke of Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. From this union two daughters were born. They lived on the Alderson farm for ten years, then in 1936, moved to Strawberry Point and remained there until her husband’s death in October of 1969. At this time, she moved to Volga until she entered the Christian Retirement Community, after her home was lost in the flood. Grace was baptized and confirmed at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point on July 6, 1941. She is known for her beautiful handcrafted crochet, tatting, quilting and other handiwork. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and spending time with family. Survivors include her daughters, Leone (Kenneth) Dopp, Oelwein and Shirley (Charles) Kuehl, Arlington; grandchildren, Dianna Brandenburg, Oelwein, Darla (DeWayne) Kuhens, Hazleton, Dixie (Harlan) Olson, Solomon, KS, Darin Dopp, Oelwein, Dacia Neville, Peoria, IL, William (Brenda) Kuehl, Roswell, NM and Kathy (Stephen) Kintner, Deland, FL; nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Grace was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister, Amy Baars and a brother, Gerald Stahl.

Forrest LeRoy Keilholtz
August 16, 1920 - January 20, 2005

Forrest LeRoy Keilholtz was born icon August 16, 1920, at Volga, Iowa, to Lester and Carrie (Larson) Keilholtz. He received his education at the Volga School and served with CC Camp near Strawberry Point. Forrest was married to Nettie Beaman on December 30, 1940, at the United Methodist Church in Manchester. Forrest entered the army and served during World War II, he was a semi-driver for Peter Pan Bakery for sixteen years, he worked for the Cedar Rapids Sewage Department, he was an engineer for the Cedar Rapids School Board, and he was employed by Wylusing Academy in Prairie du Chien until retiring to Greeley. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and wintering in Texas. Forrest died peacefully at his home in Greeley on Thursday, January 20, 2005, following a long illness. He was eighty-four years of age. Survivors include his wife, Nettie of Greeley; one daughter Judy (Jim) Holub of Mount Vernon; three sons, James (Carol) Keilholtz of Cody, Wyoming, Richard (Edith) Keilholtz of Monticello, and Ronald (Karen) Keilholtz of Marion; ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Leo (Frances) Keilholtz of Reinbeck; two sisters, Wanda Bristow of Waterloo and April (George) Clute of Earlville; and brother-in-law, George Chappell of Volga. Forrest was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Carrie Keilholtz; one son, Randy in 1973; a sister Loretta Chappell; and a brother-in-law, Lloyd Bristow.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to United Methodist Church in Greeley.

JoAnn Wilson Shaffer, 55, of Elgin, died Wednesday afternoon, January 19, 2005, at her home, following a long illness. She was born icon June 16, 1949, in Postville, to Robert D. and Erma Jane Wilson. She graduated from Valley High School in Elgin in 1967, and the American Institute of Business in 1969, with an associate degree in court reporting. Following graduation, she worked at Iowa State University in Ames as a secretary to the Dean of Engineering. She was united in marriage to Robert John Shaffer in Elgin on May 30, 1970. In 1973, they moved from Ames back to Elgin to raise their four children on the family farm. JoAnn also worked as the head librarian at the Elgin Public Library and as a tax preparer for Jon Antes Law Firm. JoAnn was a longtime member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Elgin, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading, and spending time with her family. JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband, Robert; her four children and six grandchildren, Amy Lee (Bill) Kerr, Robbie, Shauna, Jared and Maria Grace, Elgin, Jack (Lori) Shaffer, Kelsey and Kallie, Berkeley Springs, WV, Lisa (Jock) Naert, West Des Moines, Karen Shaffer at home and her friend Alex Eischeid, Clermont; two sisters, Roberta (Hugh) Chapman, Alamagordo, NM, Katherine (Vince) Schmitz, Grasston, MN; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Forrest and Darlene Shaffer, Elgin; two sisters-in-law, Dalene (Jim) Whitford, Volga and Ruby Hild, Tempe, AZ.

Lawrence “Jr.” E. Miller, 77, Elkader, died Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at University Hospitals in Iowa City, following a brief illness. He was born icon on January 2, 1928, in Elkader to Lawrence C. Sr. and Freda C. (Kraus) Miller. Jr. was confirmed April 18, 1943, at Frieden’s Evangelical Reformed Church. He attended Elkader High School and received his GED while in the military. He entered the United States Army on March 15, 1946 and was honorably discharged on November 4, 1947. Jr. was united in marriage to Eunice D. Schmalfeld on Janaury 26, 1948, at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader. Three children were born icon to this union. He operated Miller’s Woodcraft for a number of years and then built the Oasis Drive-In at Elkader. Jr. and Eunice owned and operated the drive-in for several years. At this time, Jr. began teaching Industrial Art class at Mar Mac High School in McGregor. After he quit teaching, he began doing custodial work at the Clayton County Court House, and did so until his retirement. He continued to do various types of wood working. In the early sixties, Jr. and four of his friends, Ray Syverson, Bud Miller, Dave Willford and Charlie Eaton Sr. introduced a new form of entertainment to Elkader. They built a go cart track near the football field. Jr. and Eunice were members of “God’s County” (a motorcycle touring group) which they thoroughly enjoyed. One of Jr.’s greatest pastimes was cooking, and he continued to do so right up until his death. Survivors include his children, LuAnn D. (Ray) Severson, Elgin, Larry D. (Sherri) Miller, Dubuque; five grandchildren, Tim, Mike and Erin Severson and Avery and Berkley Miller; two great-grandchildren Kennedy Corbin and Kolin Severson; one sister, Ruth (Richard) Koehn, Mt. Vernon and one brother, Kenneth (Maggie) Miller, New Hampton. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife on February 24, 2004 and a son, Lee Douglas Miller.

Lawrence “Luigi” P. Meyers, 71, of Elkader, died suddenly at his home on Monday, January 17, 2005. He was born icon April 9, 1933 at Elkader to Lawrence and Marie (Strum) Meyers. He attended country school at Cox Creek Township. Luigi took over his father’s farm and operated it until entering the US Army on July 13, 1955. He was in the 457th Airborne Field Artillery Battalion in Munich, Germany with the 101st Para-troopers. He was honorably discharged on June 26, 1957. He was united in marriage to Lavon Ahrens on June 30, 1955, and to this union four children were born. Luigi worked for E.C. Post Chrysler/Plymouth dealership in Littleport for a number of years. He then worked for Zapf’s DX for a few years before starting his own repair business at his home. At the time of his death he was working for Monona Wire Factory out of Edgewood. He enjoyed his co-workers and loved braiding wire. His greatest love was music. In the early 50’s he started his band, “Luigi and His Troubadours”, which he had for over twenty years. He also played for other local bands for a number of years. Luigi also enjoyed the outdoors, yard work, flowers, cutting wood and spending time with the grandkids. Survivors include his four children, Don and his wife Linda, Eudora, KS, Ron and his wife Colleen, Murfreesboro, TN, Kathy Wessel and her husband Brian, Colesburg and Dave and his wife Julie, Volga and nine grandchildren, Kassie, Jason, Nick, Katy, Jenny, Jacob, Michele, Sarah and Amanda. Luigi was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ruth Ann Jaster.

Pauline Robinson, 83, of Scribner Nebraska, formerly of Delhi, Iowa, died on Sunday, January 16, 2005, at St. Francis Hospital at West Point, Nebraska. Pauline Edna was born icon April 25, 1921, in Delhi, Iowa. She married David Robinson on April 3, 1943, and she raised five children with humor and love. Pauline enjoyed playing cards, bingo, and bowling. Survivors include four sons, Dennis (Melody) Robinson of Ottumwa, Eric (Sharon) Robinson of Yutan, Nebraska, Mark (Michele) Robinson of Peyton, Colorado, Tim (Keri) Robinson of Pender, Nebraska; one daughter, Nancy Nish of Las Vegas, Nevada; one sister, Izetta Stumbaugh of Eugene, Oregon; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Leonard-Muller Funeral Home and Crematory, Manchester is in charge of local arrangements.
