Alice Lenoir Carradus was born icon in rural Masonville, on December 31, 1917, to Roy and May (Carrothers) Emerson. She received her education and graduated from Manchester High School in 1935. On December 20, 1939, she married Harlan Carradus in rural Masonville at the Silver Creek Church. Alice was a homemaker and with her husband farmed west of Manchester until they retired and moved into Manchester. Alice passed away after a short illness at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester on January 14, 2005. She was eighty-seven years of age. Survivors include her husband of sixty five years, Harlan Carradus of Manchester; two daughters, Mary Mangold and husband Merle of Manchester, and Judy Short Kehrli and husband Wilbur of Manchester; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one step-grandson; two sisters, Margaret McDowell of Manchester and Maxine Preussner of Delhi. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and May Emerson; two brothers, Leslie and R.J. Emerson; and one sister, Frances Graybill.

Alice was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women (UMW).

Ardee LeHew Fascher, 95, died Thursday morning, January 13, 2005, in the Good Samaritan Center, Postville, IA after a long illness. She was born icon November 24, 1909, in Madison, WI, the daughter of Orley and Rachel (Douglas) LeHew. She was educated in Clayton County schools and graduated from McGregor High School in 1929. She taught six years in the Swede Ridge area of Clayton County. Ardee married Otto F. Fascher, June 4, 1935, who preceded her in death in January 1988. They farmed in the Farmersburg area for more than fifty years. Ardee has been an active, contributing member of the St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg since 1935; teaching children through adult Sunday school class; active in the Luther League and all aspects of the church. She is survived by one sister, Ethel Atkinson, Fortville, IN and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, Noble, Sidney, Lloyd, Robert and Ralph “Pat” LeHew and four sisters Lorraine and Thea in infancy, Almeda Boardman and Harriet Merten.

Maude Schaer, 91, of Elgin, IA, died Monday morning, January 10, 2005, at her son’s home in Elgin, following a long illness. She was born icon May 31, 1913, on a farm near West Union, the daughter of Charles E. and Bertha Marie (Ammondson) Montgomery. She attended West Union Elementary and High School, graduating with honors in 1931. She taught a rural school in Dover Township two years, and then worked as receptionist and reporter for the West Union Argo Gazette. She was united in marriage to Fred Schaer on June 1, 1935. They moved at once to his farm home west of Elgin, where she spent her entire married life. To this union four children were welcomed, John Jacob, Mary Ann, James Frederick and Martha Louise. Maude was baptized and joined First Baptist Church on March 1, 1936. She faithfully served as Sunday school and Bible school teacher and church clerk for many years. She was also active in the work of the Women’s Tabitha. Her hobbies included crossword puzzles and creating original puzzles and contests, and loved a good humorous story. She shared a large collection of poems and articles for entertainment. She was a wise and talented woman and gave good counsel when needed. She kept a diary of the activities in her family and neighborhood for fifty years, which are a delight to read. Her homemade cookies, hot cross buns, frosted cinnamon rolls and pies will be missed by all. She is survived by her children, John Jacob Schaer and wife Alice, Elgin, Mary Ann Schaer, Elgin and James F. Schaer and wife Martha, Des Moines and seven grandchildren, Louise Harrington, E. J. Schaer, Miriam Sawtelle, Tomas, David, Steven and Eric Schaer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; her parents; three brothers, Harold, John and Charles Montgomery; two sisters, Una Leuenberger and Mary Jane Montgomery; her daughter, Martha Louise and a great-grandson, Tristan Sawtelle.

Earl W. Hill was born icon May 27, 1924, on the parental farm in Coffins Grove Township, rural Manchester to Thomas and Isabelle (Chambers) Hill. He was united in marriage to Florence Welch on November 18, 1949, at her parent’s farm, Thomas and Amanda Welch of Manchester. Six children were born icon to this union. They farmed in rural Manchester and the last three years they made their home at the Hallmark Care Center in Mount Vernon. Earl was a farmer, commercial strawberry grower, and equipment operator. He was an avid hunter and loved to travel to Arizona and southern Texas for the winter. Earl died peacefully at Hallmark Care Center, Mount Vernon, Iowa on January 8, 2005. He was eighty years of age. Survivors of Earl include his wife, Florence Hill of Mount Vernon; five children, Virginia (Gary) Byers of Farson, Wyoming, Richard Hill, Sr. of Sarasota, Florida, Gaillynn (John) Warne of Edmond, Oklahoma, Lorena (Gene) Freiburger of Lisbon, and Leonard (Susan) Hill of Blue Springs, Missouri; fourteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Jeanette (Francis) Hansel of Manchester. Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Isabelle Hill; a daughter, Karen Hill; a granddaughter, Crystal Warne; and two brothers, John and Charles Hill.

Mary Margaret Kiesau

Mary Margaret Kiesau, 86, died Saturday, January 8, 2004 at the Good Samaritan Center, Postville, following a brief illness. Mary was born icon November 9, 1918, to Elba and Nellie (Land) Nagel. She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith. On November 24, 1936, she was united in marriage to Paul Kiesau. They later divorced. In 1939, Mary moved to the Minneapolis area where she worked in the food service area for over sixty years. In late 2000, Mary moved back to Monona where she soon had many friends and enjoyed her time here. She was very active with the senior citizens of the area and rode the NE Iowa transit van as often as possible. Mary’s hobbies were baking, crocheting, collecting recipes, telephone visits with her friends, activities and playing Bingo at The Glen. She especially enjoyed time spent with her great-grandchildren. In 2004, when her health began to fail, she moved to Grand Meadow Glen in Postville. The last few days of her life were spent in the hospice room at Postville Good Samaritan Center. Survivors include three sons, Robert (Betty) Kiesau, Monona, Robert M. Smith, Minneapolis, MN, Mark (Jill) Smith, Minneapolis, MN; three grandchildren, Bill (Crystal) Kiesau, Walker, Barb (Steven) Friederich, Postville, Brad (Pam) Kiesau, Prairie du Chien, WI; four great-grandchildren, Corby and Troy Friederich, Colton Kiesau and Morgan Kiesau and a sister-in-law, Melva Nagel, Monona. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, William in infancy and two brothers, Francis and Donald Nagel.

Gayle Catherine Torkelson, 75, of Elgin, IA, died Saturday, January 8, 2005 at the Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI, following a brief illness. She was born icon October 23, 1929 at home in Hawkeye, IA to Silas and Catherine (Morf) Broadbent. She graduated from Hawkeye High School, and attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette for teacher’s training. She taught for a time at a local country school in the Elgin area. She was united in marriage to Otis Torkelson on June 13, 1948 at West Clermont Lutheran Church, Clermont. Four children were born icon to this union. They made their home in Elgin where Gayle helped with the family business. She was a charter member of the Elgin Lutheran Church and remained active as long as possible. Gayle enjoyed spending time with her family, visiting and playing cards with her neighbors and friends, and taking an occasional trip to the river boat in Marquette. Survivors include her husband, Otis Torkelson, Elgin; her children, Susan Burrow, Oak Harbor, Wash., Jane Burrow, Clermont, Pat (Jeff) Snitker, Waukon and Nancy (Scott) Green, Iowa Falls; twelve grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and a brother, Paul (Helen) Broadbent, Rochester, Minn. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Noel Broadbent and a great-grandson, Matthew Burrow.

Gene Joseph Amling Sr.

Gene Joseph Amling Sr., 75, of rural Elkport, IA, died Thursday, January 6, 2005, at Finley Hospital in Dubuque, IA, following a long illness. He was born icon April 1, 1929, in Elkport to Frank and Clara (Gerloff) Amling. He attended Elkport School. Gene entered the U.S. Army on December 6, 1950, and was honorably discharged on December 15, 1952. Other than his time in service, Gene lived his entire life in Elkport. He worked as a logger, and drove school bus for Central Community School District for twenty years. He loved the outdoors, Blue Grass music and attending Blue Grass festivals. He was a member of the Lemka-Stendel American Legion Post #106. Survivors include his children, Marcus (Debra) Amling, Garber, Mary Amling (Steve Aulwes) Garber, George Amling, Elkport, Gene Jay Amling Jr., Garber, Chuck (Kerry) Amling, Garber, Carl (Tammy Funk) Amling, Elkport; eleven grandchildren, Marie Amling, Frank Amling, Crystal Amling, Matt Aulwes, Trevor Amling, Kelcee Amling, Evan Andrews, Sawyer Amling, Tanner Amling, Spencer Amling, Ariel Lee; a sister-in-law, Joyce Amling, Elkport and many nieces and nephews. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Thomas and Louis Amling and a half-brother, Harlan Staade. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

Violet Belle Watson

Violet Belle Watson, 73, of Elkader, died Tuesday morning, January 4, 2005 at the Guttenberg Care Center, following along illness. She was born icon February 24, 1931 in Manchester, Iowa to George and Evelyn (Wall) Tischhauser. Survivors include her husband Gene Watson, Elkader; a son, Craig (LeAnn) Watson, The Woodlands, TX and two grandchildren, Kristen and Matthew Watson. No visitation and private memorial graveside services will be held at a later date.
