Velma Passmore, 79, died Monday, January 3, 2005, at her residence in Monona following a brief illness. She was born icon December 12, 1925, in Eagle Grove to Alvin and Effie (Nagel) Woomer. She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith. Verla graduated from Eagle Grove High School and attended Junior College in DesMoines. On August 4, 1946, Velma was united in marriage to Walter Passmore at Eagle Grove. Four children were born icon to this union. They farmed near Kanawha and in the Belmond area. In 1953, they moved to Britt where she was employed as a dental assistant. In 1975, they moved to Bloomfield where she was bookkeeper for Wilcoxson Transport. They retired in 1992, at which time they moved to Monona and became members of Garden City United Methodist Church. Velma was a member of Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, the Monona Historical Society and was very active in her church and community. In 2003, she received the Governor’s Volunteer Award. Survivors include her three sons and their wives, Charles (Leigh) Passmore, Rialto, CA, Gary (Fran) Passmore, Monona, Lyle (Diane) Passmore, Minnesota Lake, MN; one daughter, Ann Kerley, Oswego, IL, daughter-in-law, Donna Passmore, North Mankato, MN; fifteen grandchildren, Michael and Lisa Passmore, Angela Graziano, Amy Wiltgen, Sarah Kerley, Paul, Shawn, Rachel and Scott Passmore, Jason and Brittany Passmore, Andrea Benzing, Briana Brunner, Devyn Wheatly and Shandra McLellan; twenty six great grandchildren, Michael and Michelle Passmore, Lauren, Thomas and Kyle Graziano, Gabriela, Alexander and Aiyana Passmore, Daniel, Anthony and Russell Passmore, Ashley Passmore, Skylar Passmore, Sean and Jasmine Bengston, Isaiah Passmore, Zachery and Tyler Larson, Cael and Makenzie Brunner, Lakin and Jenna Benzing, Morgan and Jennaleigh Wheatly and Rex McLellan. Velma was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Walter, on January 24, 1993.

Ruth Amolia Rossbach, 95, of Monona, died Monday, January 3, 2005, at East Towne Care Center, Independence, following a brief illness. She was born icon in Russellville, MO, to Adam and Rosina (Jungmeyer) Jahreis. She was baptized on June 20, 1909, and confirmed on March 25, 1923, both at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Lohman, MO. Ruth graduated from Russellville High School. She was united in marriage to Otto Rossbach on September 24, 1933 in Russellville, MO. Six children were born icon to this union. Ruth helped on the farm until retirement and worked at Wilke’s Grocery Store for twelve years. She loved to quilt, do handwork and bake. Survivors include her children, Lois (Richard) Thedens, Rowley, Don Rossbach, Canton, OH, Jo Ann (Jon) Kohl, Cedar Rapids, Kathleen Phillips, Fort Worth, TX, Carolyn Kuhrke, Minneapolis, MN; one sister, Anna Heidbreder, San Jose, CA; eleven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on July 3, 1974; one son, Otto Rossbach; one brother, William Schmoeger and two sisters, Bertha Ott and Hulda Loesch.

Colleen Lynn Frieden, 40, of Edgewood, died Friday, December 31, 2004, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester, following a long illness. She was born icon February 21, 1964, in Manchester, IA. She graduated from Central Community High School in Elkader in 1982. Colleen devoted her life to helping others, working in the health care field for nearly twenty years. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing cards and other games, working with horses, shopping and decorating. She loved wind chimes, was forever smiling, laughing and had a great sense of humor. She had two dogs, Scooter and Sassy that were very special to her. Survivors include her parents, Douglas and Lerene (Thein) Clinton of Edgewood; her siblings, Brad Frieden of Strawberry Point, Gregg Frieden and his wife Linda of Elkader, Tracy Clinton Ezerski and her husband Paul of Clive and Branch Clinton of Edgewood; her significant other, Mike Kirby of Edgewood; three nieces; one nephew and a great niece and great nephew. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Lorraine and Bernice Thein and Orville and Beryl Frieden.

Mable Florence (Thelman) Henderson, 94, Cross Plains, WI, formerly of Monona died December 31, 2004, at Hospice Care Center, Fitchburg, WI, following a brief illness. She was born icon October 8, 1910, in Alpha. Her mother, Martha, died in the flue epidemic of 1919, and Mable was raised by her grandparents, Anna Marie and Fredrick Thelman. She graduated from Alpha High School in 1929, and attended Upper Iowa College where she majored in Education. While teaching eight grades, and twenty eight children at the Little Red School in Allamakee County, near Monona, she met her future husband. She was united in marriage to Forrest Henderson. Three children were born icon to this union. Forrest and Mable were married during the depression of the 1930’s, but Mable was not allowed teach country school after she was married. Those teaching jobs were saved for men who had families to support. It was during World War II while all the men were fighting the war that women were asked to teach again in the country schools of Iowa. Mable helped the war effort by teaching the country school at Settle Creek. Mable was happiest teaching children, whether in a classroom, Sunday school or Bible school. She was an active member of the Volney Methodist Church for many years. Many will remember her pies and fried chicken at the fund raising suppers there. She also loved to garden, and her flowers, especially roses, were shared each Sunday on the altar of the Volney Church. The last twelve years of Mable’s life were lived in Wisconsin with her daughter Marilyn, where she attended and joined Grace Lutheran Church in Madison. Mable found many living things to share her love with; Maggie, a small white Westie dog, the Arabian horses she loved to pet and talk to when she took long walks along the pasture fences during warm afternoons in spring and autumn, and flowers. Flowers that grew inside and outside her rural Cross Plains, WI, home are God’s special gift to the world. Mable touched the lives of everyone she met with her gentle, kind nature. She will be missed by her family and friends and forever loved and cherished in their hearts and memories. Rest in peace, Mable, in Jesus’ arms. Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn Ann (Francis Dean) Gannon, Cross Plains, WI; five grandchildren, DeAnn Gannon (Jay) Meythaler, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI, Suzann Gannon (Steven) Mattson, Mequon, WI, Jennifer Gannon (Daniel) Foelker, Middleton, WI, Christy Henderson (James) Miskell, Marscilles, IL, James Henderson, Morris, IL and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and two children, Roland Forrest Henderson in infancy and William Henderson.

Mervin James Ludovissy, 77, of Edgewood, died Thursday, December 30, 2004, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born icon March 1, 1927, at Turkey River, IA, the son of Leo E. and Viola E. (Smith) Ludovissy. He attended Turkey River schools, and after moving to the Edgewood area, attended the Burgin School. He was united in marriage to Doris Stewart on September 12, 1945, at the Methodist Parsonage in Manchester. Mervin and Doris farmed for twenty-nine northwest of Edgewood. After selling their farm in 1974, they moved to Edgewood. Mervin was employed at the Edgewood Co-op for eighteen years, and also worked for time at Kendrick Logging. After retirement he helped restore many cemeteries and mowed cemeteries and lawns. He spent time doing woodworking, but his greatest pastime was fishing. He loved his children and grandchildren very much. Survivors include his wife, Doris of fifty-nine years; two sons, Curtis and his wife Sandy Ludovissy, West Amana and Rick and his wife Julie Ludovissy, Palo; grandchildren, Jason and his wife Jewel, West Amana and Chelsea and Chad, Palo; two sisters, Berdina Putzier and Leanna Stewart, Strawberry Point; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers-in-law, Karl Putzier and LeRoy Stewart.

Keith Ross Koth, 64, died Wednesday, December 29, 2004, as a result of injuries sustained a milk truck accident, near Patch Grove Twp., WI. He was born icon on September 19, 1940, in Postville to Kenneth and Romilda (Heins) Koth. Keith grew up on a farm in the Postville area and attended Luana and Postville public schools. He graduated from Postville in 1959. He met Judy (Kuehl) when picking up milk at her parent’s farm in 1960. They were united in marriage at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Elkport, on June 9, 1963. One son was born icon to this union. Keith started driving milk truck for George Wolters, Luana, until he started farming in 1964. He farmed with his dad on the family farm and drove milk truck for AMPI until joining Kuehl Brothers, in 1966. He continued to farm until 1994. He was a member of Farm Bureau, Delegate of AMPI, Church Council of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Youth Group Sponsor, and had just completed his sixth year of driving for AMPI. He had worked previously at Wilkes, Jerry Everitt and Sons, Pattison Brothers and Kann Manufacturing. Survivors include his wife, Judy Koth, Elkport; his parents, Kenneth and Romilda Koth, Postville; son Brian Keith (Christina) Koth, Elkport; grandsons Hunter, Connor and Matthew Koth; step-grandchildren Jamie and Jared Melcher; brother, Burnell (Judy) Koth, Postville; sisters, Diane (Jim) Kruse, Postville, Helena (Larry) Zweibohmer, Clermont, Joann (Steve) Malsed Sheldon; father and mother in law, LaVerne (Cora Mae) Kuehl, Elkport; brother in law Gary (Nancy) Kuehl, Elkader and many nieces and nephews.

Tom Hennessey

Anthony Thomas Hennessey was born icon on September 22, 1915, on a farm near Oneida. He was the oldest boy and third child of fifteen born icon to Maurice and Anna (Killias) Hennessey. Tom’s parents moved often and so he attended seven schools in eight years (St. John’s in Ryan being among them) often staying out to help with field work and ending formal schooling at Walker in eleventh grade. Tom worked on farms until he enlisted in the Navy in 1942. In 1947, Tom worked for JP Smith at his blacksmith shop in Ryan until he bought it for himself. Later, when it burned, he gave the land to the town of Ryan for a park. He also worked for Henderson Mfg., Highway Equipment, B&S; Construction, and Schmitt Construction building bridges until 1980. Tom’s home in Manchester burned about five years ago and he moved in with his brother, Maurice in his parent’s home in Ryan. Tom was married to Delores Glass Manson in 1960. She died in 1995. Tom died Tuesday, December 28, 2004, at Regional Medical Center in Manchester following a sudden illness. He was eighty-nine years of age. Survivors include four children, Mary Brudnicki of Davenport, Mike (LuAnn) Manson of Manchester, Dale (Charlene) Manson of Manchester, and Pete (LeeAnn) Manson of Hopkinton; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; nine brothers and sisters, Sister Dorothy Hennessey of Dubuque, Catherine DeLucia of St. Petersburg, Florida, Gerry (Donald) Welter of Cape Coral, Florida, Maurice Hennessey of Ryan, David (LaVera) Hennessey of Des Moines, Marilyn (Robert) McElligott of Waterloo, Sister Gwen Hennessey of Dubuque, Dr. Larry (Donna) Hennessey of North Madison, Ohio, and Mary June (Jim) McDonald of Delhi. Preceding Tom in death was his wife, Delores; his parents, Maurice and Anna (Killias) Hennessey; one grandson, Travis Manson; one great-grandson, Dalton Cole; two sisters, Monica Krebsbach and Sister Miriam Hennessey; three brothers Jack Hennessey, James Hennessey (in infancy), and Father Ron Hennessey MM.

Tom enlisted in the Navy in 1942 right after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He was sent to Norfolk Virginia, and on a convoy to Scotland, back to the U.S. and then to the Panama Canal Zone. During the invasion of North Africa he was staioned on a ship in the Mediterranean Sea near Sicily Island. Tom was a Machinist Mate 1st Class on the USS Brooklyn. He sailed the Italian coast and into Naples. He was at the Island of Capri and the invasion of southern France a month after D-Day. After the Japanese surrendered, Tom was transferred to an aircraft carrier and sent to Sand Diego.

Tom was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ryan, an avid reader, and loved to go to sales.

Shirley Ann Keppler, 68, Monona, died Saturday, December 25, 2004, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, following a long illness. She was born icon February 3, 1936 at Prairie du Chien, WI, to Lester and Evelyn (Valley) Lessard. Shirley attended Prairie du Chien High School through tenth grade. In 1955, she was united in marriage to Thomas Keppler in Prairie du Chien, WI. Four children were born icon to this union. Shirley worked at Northern Engraving in Waukon for twenty years. She loved spending time with family and friends, woodworking, gardening, crafts and fishing. Surviving is her husband, Thomas Keppler, Monona; two daughters, Susan (Lee) Rubendall, Monona and Lisa Keppler, Fennimore, WI; two grandchildren, Serena (Pedro) Ramon, Postville, Michael Rubendall, Monona; two great-grandchildren, Felyx and Ortensia Ramon, Postville; six brothers, Tommy (Ann) Lessard, Bobby Lessard and Betty, Ronnie Lessard and Patty, Kenneth (Anna Mae) Lessard, Morris (Darlene ) Lessard, and Richard (Neva) Lessard, all of Prairie du Chien, WI and one sister, Mae (Paul) Adney, Benson, AZ. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Gary and Thomas Keppler; one brother, Ben Lessard and one grandson, Travis Rubendall.
