Leona Jean Letts was born icon on November 7, 1937, in Bullsgap, Tennessee, to Harold and Beulah (Derringer) Presley. She graduated from Knoxville High School. On May 24, 1963, she was united in marriage to Milo M. Letts in Galena, Illinois. Four children were born icon to this union. They resided in the Manchester area. Leona died at her home on Thursday, December 23, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was sixty-seven years of age. Survivors include her husband, Milo Letts of Manchester; her four children Michelle Letts (Tom Amthauer), Kim (Dennis) Wilson, Julie (Danny) Bolsinger, and Mike Letts (Marge) all of Manchester; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Verna Mecham of Knoxville; one brother Jim (Julie) Presley of Knoxville; and special friends Mike and Judy Neuhaus, Cathy Cardenas, Brian Bosler, Kathy and Ken Clemen, Delpha and Jamie Ostrander, Don Sickels, Glen and Kathie Sauerbry, and blanket group Jessie Penney, Becky Boslinger and Sam Hahesy. Leona was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Cheryl Presley; and one sister, Norma Poe.

Leona was a bartender and owned and operated Onies Wooden Nickel in Manchester. She enjoyed bingo, going to casinos with her friends, bowling, watching West Delaware football, traveling with Milo, salmon fishing, and making tie blankets the last few months. Leona was a member of the VFW Auxiliary

JoAnn Kramer, 60, Monona, died Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at University Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, following a brave battle with cancer. She was born icon in Waterloo on April 16, 1944, to Albert A. and Ruby (Negley) Mixdorf. She graduated from Janesville High School in 1961, and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, with a Bachelor of Science degree. She was united in marriage to the late John Boardman Decker on July 4, 1965. Three children were born icon to this union. JoAnn was united in marriage to Eugene F. Kramer, in Iowa City on June 23, 1983. JoAnn was office manager at Kramer Law Office for twenty years. She loved her family, music, the outdoors, traveling and was active in community affairs. Survivors include her parents, her husband, Eugene, Monona, one son, Christopher J. (DeAnn) Decker, Ankeny, two daughters, Jennifer J. (Jon) Forgey, Algona, Ann Kay (Keith) Whittemore, Waterloo; nine grandchildren; three step-children, Deborah (Dennis) Peterson, North Liberty, David (Mary) Kramer, Neola, Daniel (Marcia) Kramer, Fayson, IL; eleven step-grandchildren; three brothers, Jay (Kathy) Mixdorf, Clear Lake, Jon Mixdorf, Waterloo, Jack (Sheila) Mixdorf, Eldridge and one sister, Geraldine (Gary) Karr, Waterloo.

Murrel Stence 97, Elkader, died Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at the Elkader Care Center following a brief illness. She was born icon Murrel Helen Cords on February 14, 1907, to Philip Raymond and Hattie (Ueker) Cords at rural Clayton County. She was confirmed at Frieden’s Evangelical Church, Elkader, on July 31, 1932, by Rev. Paul Kitterer. Murrel attended public schools in Illinois and Iowa. She graduated from Monona High School in 1926 and attended one year of normal school. She was united in marriage to Francis (Butter) Stence on February 14, 1935. He preceded her in death in June, 1954. Two children were born icon to this union. Most of their married life Murrel and Butter farmed in Clayton County. Prior to her marriage, Murrel served as a housekeeper for the C.F. Murphy family. Following Butter’s death, Murrel, Gene and Nancy farmed at Mederville until 1956. From 1957 to 1962, she was a housekeeper for Congressman Leonard Wolf and his family in Elkader and Washington, D.C. During that time, she met and fed many politicians including Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson. She loved meeting new people and seeing them satisfy their hunger on her home cooking, especially her lemon pie and sticky rolls. Her grandsons always looked forward to visiting and finding sticky rolls waiting. Since 1968, Murrel lived in Elkader. She enjoyed neighbors, church, sports on TV and knitting dish cloths. She was known for her independence and her generosity with her cooking. In 1997, she celebrated her 90th birthday with nearly one hundred friends at an open house in Peace Church. Survivors include her children, Gene Raymond (Sandy) Stence, Estero, FL and Nancy Frances Stence Creason, Decatur, IL; four grandsons and families, Craig and Tina Stence and daughters, Kaela and Ashley, LaPorte, IN, C.J. and Julie Stence, LaPorte, IN, James Creason, Urbana, IL and Michael Creason, New York City, NY; one sister, Gladys Bollman, Volney and many nieces and nephews. Murrel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Butter; four siblings, Raymond Cords, Frances Buckman, Helen Sargent and Arnold Cords.

Edna I. Robinson Ballant

Edna Robinson Ballant was born icon May 12, 1915, on the family farm three miles south of Earlville. She was the youngest daughter of Charles W. and Bertha (Shaw) Robinson. Edna received her education in the Earlville Consolidated School graduating with the class of 1932. She was married to Stephen A. Ballant, Jr., a local tailor in Manchester. Stephen preceded her in death in 1985. Edna worked as a waitress and was a clerk at Montgomery Ward and Ben Franklin in Manchester. Edna died Tuesday, December 14, 2004, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester, following a lengthy illness. She was eighty-nine years of age. Survivors include one sister, Alberta Kula of Phoenix, Arizona; three nephews and families of Phoenix, Arizona; one niece and family from Colorado; and family friend, Tim Tutton of Manchester. Edna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Stephen; three brothers, Glenn E. Robinson, Grant Robinson, and Archie Robinson, and one sister, Elsie Custer.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and enjoyed visiting, fishing, and gardening.

Memorials may be directed to the Good Neighbor Home.

Florence Edna Schroeder, 85, Luana, died Monday, December 13, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center, Postville, following a short illness. She was born icon July 10, 1919, in rural Allamakee County to Edward and Selma (Bruehahn) Hamann. Florence was baptized on December 30, 1919, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona and confirmed there on March 15, 1936. She received her education through eighth grade at Hickory Creek Country School and attended Luana High School through ninth grade. She was united in marriage to Harold Schroeder on February 22, 1938 at St. Paul Lutheran Parsonage, Monona. Two sons were born icon to this union. Florence was a homemaker, helped on the farm and cooked at the Luana School for eleven years. She loved gardening and flowers, and cooking for the family and her grandchildren. Survivors include her two sons, Larry and his wife Anna, Monona, Jerry and his wife Mary, Luana; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and one sister, Laura Duvel, Postville. Florence was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on July 21, 1990 and one brother Milton Hamann.

Florence Irene Hansel, 82, Edgewood, died Friday, December 10, 2004, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home, Edgewood. She was born icon December 24, 1921, to Richard and Hilma (Carlson) Nelson on a farm Northeast of Strawberry Point, IA. She was educated in the local country schools and graduated from the Edgewood High School with the class of 1939. After employment of two years, she was united in marriage to Fielden Hansel on February 12, 1941, at Manchester, IA. Five children were born icon to this union. Florence worked at the Ed-Co School lunch service for nearly thirty years. She thoroughly enjoyed being with the children. She was an active longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church and UMW of Edgewood. She was a member of Pythian Sisters and the Eastern Star for over fifty years. She was a board member with the Edgewood Convalescent Home and a former board member of Yankee Settlement. She loved spending time with her family, especially following the activities of her grandchildren. Survivors include her children, Howard (Carol) Hansel, Boulder City, NV, Layton (Barbara) Hansel, Colesburg, David (Vickie) Hansel, Long Grove, IL Ruth (Jan) Lueken, Colesburg and Jim (Judy) Hansel, Lamont; thirteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and two sisters, Margaret Deuel, Strawberry Point and Hildur Martin Henderson, NV. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on April 9, 1969; six brothers, Elmer, Egnar, Rueben, Kenneth, Wallace, and Harvey Nelson and one sister, Elsie Reinke.

Cora Margaret Wilhelmina Kliefoth, 97, Monona, died Wednesday, December 8, 2004, at the Elkader Care Center, Elkader, following a brief illness. She was born icon in Garnavillo on June 28, 1907, to Max and Bertha (Halberg) Bahls. She was united in marriage to Elmer Kliefoth on February 10, 1927 in Garnavillo. One daughter, Darlene was born icon to this union. Cora farmed with her husband for a time, and then worked at the original turkey plant in Postville until her retirement. She loved to fish, garden, play cards, flowers, quilting and tatting. Surviving is her five grandchildren, Larry Wilker, Portage, WI, Diane (Doug) Whittle, Des Moines, Gloria (Ron) Mahannah, Dubuque, Karla Wilker, Torrence, CA, Carol Nance, Indianola; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-granddaughters and one sister, Anita Stade, Garnavillo. Cora was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Elmer on April 23, 1977; her daughter Darlene in 1996; son-in-law Clifford in 1999 and numerous brothers and sisters.

Sara M. Leonard Malone

Sara Mae Leonard Malone was born icon March 26, 1935, in Cascade to Miles and Sophia (Glynn) Leonard. She was raised and educated in the Ryan area and graduated from St. Patrick’s High School. Sara was married to H. David Malone on July 7, 1956, in Ryan. Three children were born icon to this union. They lived in Manchester from 1962 until 1973 where Sara operated Dave’s North End Store. In 1973 they moved to Waterloo and Sara received her Associates Degree from Hawkeye Tech. She worked for Kroblin Transportation and Bergen, Paulsen C.P.A.’s in Waterloo. They were later divorced and Sara moved to Tampa, Florida in 1984. She worked as a Controller at EcuAmerica International. Sara died on Sunday, December 5, 2004, at Town & Country Hospital in Tampa, Florida, following a sudden illness. Survivors include two daughters, Cathy (Lynn) Johnson of Cedar Rapids and Diane Malone and her husband Tracy Shoemaker of Tampa; one son, David (Christine) Malone of Ephrata, Pennsylvania; three brothers, Henry (Audrey) Leonard of Manchester, Miles (Madonna) Leonard of Manchester, and Paul (Sherri) Leonard of Camanche; three grandchildren, Josh Folmar, Jesse Malone, and Robert Johnson II; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Sara was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers Miles (in infancy), Glenn and Milton.

Sara was a member of Incarnation Catholic Church in Tampa. She enjoyed growing roses, playing bridge, following the Hawkeye’s, and taking care of her dog, Joey.
