Melvin Charles Hakert, 83, Volga, Iowa died Friday, November 12, 2004, at Northeast Iowa Christian Retirement Community, Strawberry Point, following a lengthy illness. Melvin was born icon on the home farm in the Littleport area on August 30, 1921, to Edward and Minnie (Nightingale) Hakert. He attended country school in the Littleport area. He was united in marriage to Arleene Gentz in Elkader on June 26, 1944. Three children were born icon to this union. Melvin and Arleene farmed their entire life in the Littleport area, retiring from the farm in 1977 moving to Volga. Melvin spent many years enjoying his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed working in his garden. Survivors include his wife, Arleene Hakert, Volga; three children, Carol (Jess) Jarman, Strawberry Point, Shirley (Ray) Horns, Tomah, WI, Don Hakert (friend Tereasa), Mederville; eight grandchildren, Sheri (Jan) Refle, Sandi Brown (friend Steve), Melissa (Nick) Fettkether, Michael (Amy) Horns, Matthew Horns, Kevin Hakert (fiancé Brooke), Andy (Rhonda) Hakert and Amanda Hakert; ten great-grandchildren, Elisha, Allan, Amber, Jaime, Jordan, Jacqueline, Alexander, Benjamin, Rebecca and Ashton; two sisters, LaVera VanDunn, Elkader and Helen Nading, Volga. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Marvin, Herman and one in infancy and one sister, Wanda Berns.

Edna Evelyn Krueger, 87, Monona, Iowa died Friday, November 12, 2004, at Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon, Iowa following a brief illness. Edna was born icon near Hawkeye, Iowa on October 9, 1917, to Charles D. and Estelle B. (Conner) Gager. She graduated from West Union High School. Edna was united in marriage to Lawrence (Larry) Krueger on September 7, 1938, in West Union. She was baptized and confirmed on January 29, 1939, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona by Rev. Seefkes. Edna worked at Monona Wire for many years. She loved her flowers and strawberries and enjoyed fishing with Larry. Edna resided at the Postville Good Samaritan Center, Postville, Iowa with Larry at the time of her death. Survivors include her husband, Lawrence (Larry) Krueger; two sisters, Elaine Baade, Cedar Rapids, Jean Moritz, West Union and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Robert E. Gager and a nephew, Rolland R. Gager.

Donna Mae Butikofer

Donna Mae Butikofer, 69, of Elgin, daughter of Willie and Lena (Kjosa) Bergan, was born icon on August 3, 1935, at home in St. Olaf. She was baptized at Norway Lutheran Church, St. Olaf and confirmed at Marion Lutheran, Gunder. She attended country school and graduated from Postville High School in 1954. Donna was united in marriage to John Butikofer Jr. on June 27, 1954 at Marion Lutheran Church. Four children were born icon to this union. She was a devoted farm wife, mother, and grandmother. Donna was an active member of Elgin Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday school for several years, singing in the choir, and took part in many WELCA activities. When her children entered high school, she began employment outside the home as a cook at Valley High School for ten years. During her husband’s fight with cancer, she stayed at home to care for John. Following his death, she returned to work, this time at Butter Braid in Elgin, followed by Bostrom’s Deli in West Union. She currently was working as a tour guide at Montauk in Clermont. Donna truly enjoyed people and formed many lasting friendships throughout her life. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren and their accomplishments, and was always actively involved in their lives. She died November 8, 2004, at LaCrosse Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, WI, from injuries sustained in a car accident on October 4th. Survivors include her children: David Butikofer, Elgin, Rodney (Sheryl) Butikofer, Elgin, Trudy (Bill) Wessels, Wausau, WI and Terry Butikofer, Elgin; three grandchildren, Kelsey Butikofer, Phillip Wessels and Katelyn Wessels; two sisters, Deloris Olson, Gunder, Lavanda (Floyd) Thompson, Wadena; one aunt, Stella Larson, Elkader and many nieces and nephews. Donna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John Jr. in 1989 and a brother-in-law, Olvin Olson.

Don W. Foley of Strawberry Point died on Friday, November 5, 2004 at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Don W. Foley was born icon February 13, 1920, at Cedar Rapids to Edward and Catherine (McNamara) Foley. For many years Don owned and operated Foley’s Automotive Service in Strawberry Point where he sold new and used cars and implements. Survivors include his son, Don D. (Shirley) Foley of Dubuque; three grandsons, Steve (fiancée Bridget Hanan) of Peosta, Jon (Kristin) of Phoenix, Tod (Susan) of Minneapolis; great-granddaughter Anna; a sister, Laura Schatz of Cedar Rapids; and Evelyn Foley of Strawberry Point. Don was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonny; parents Edward and Catherine (McNamara) Foley of Cedar Rapids; and a brother, Virgil.

He was a United States Navy Veteran of WWII aboard the battleships Pennsylvania and Nevada.

Don enjoyed boating, playing cards, and gambling at casinos.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to The American Cancer Society or Hospice.

Keith Austin Jones was born icon March 17, 1928, on the parental farm north of Manchester to Austin Owen and Helen Irene (Aldrich) Jones. He attended the Little Red School, rural Manchester, and graduated from Manchester High School in 1945. Following graduation he went to Central Radio School in Kansas City, Missouri and the University of Dubuque. He was employed as a radio engineer at KDTH transmitter in St. Katherine near Dubuque for several years, before moving to Cedar Rapids. He worked at Collins Radio until he started farming south of Manchester in 1951. In 1956, the family moved to their present farm north of Manchester. Keith was united in marriage to Arlene Thelma (Mueller) Jones on May 4, 1948, at Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder, Iowa. Four children were born icon to this union. Keith died at his farm suddenly on November 3, 2004. He was seventy-six years of age. Survivors include his wife, Arlene T. Jones of Manchester; Ardith K. (Steve) Harring of Manchester, Steve K. (Deniese M.) Jones of Manchester, Luann S. (Kirk) Conklin of Strawberry Point, and Sandra K. (Kevin) Glanz of Manchester; nine grandchildren, Jennifer and Megan Harring, Caitlyn, Austin, and Hannah Jones, Michaela Conklin, and Kelley, Jessie and Jamie Glanz; one great-grandchild, Jason Michael Jones; and one sister, Joyce (Dick) Ortberg of Mary Esther, Florida. Keith was preceded in death by his parents; two infant brothers; and one infant sister.

Keith enjoyed farming, fishing, square dancing, and conversing with anyone.

The family prefers memorials instead of flowers.

Luke R. Little, 99, of Strawberry Point, formerly of Volga, died Wednesday, November 3, 2004, at the Northeast Iowa Christian Retirement Community, Strawberry Point. He was born icon in Clayton County on August 21, 1905 to Joe and Anna C. (Hurley) Little. He farmed in the Volga area most of his life. Luke was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed fishing and traveling. He spent his last years in great care given by the staff of the Northeast Iowa Christian Retirement Community, Strawberry Point. Luke is survived by three nieces and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John and Joe Little and sisters, Lucille Riedel, Zeta Kennedy and Delores Lang. Memorials may be directed to the Northeast Iowa Christian Retirement Community, Strawberry Point, IA.

Dorothy Mary Nuehring, 74, Monona, died Sunday, October 31, 2004, at her residence following a long illness. She was born icon July 21, 1930, in Farmersburg, to Roy and Effie (Martins) Saacke. Dorothy received her education at Gooding Country School through the eighth grade, Farmersburg High School through eleventh grade, then graduating with the Monona Class of 1949. She was united in marriage to Marlyn Nuehring on November 20, 1951 at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg. Four children were born icon to this union. Dorothy worked with her husband on the farm. For many years, she was a florist at the Monona Greenhouse and worked in the Monona City Clerk’s office for eight years. Dorothy loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Marlyn, Monona; her children, Janita (Steve) Doeppke, Elkader, Kevin (Chris) Nuehring, Farmersburg, Arlen (Kila) Nuehring, Monona, Colleen (Gary) Schellhammer, Waukon; eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jeanette (LuVerne) Krambeer, Monona, Ramona (John) Hoyem, Des Moines, and one brother, Robert (Joyce) Saacke, Farmersburg and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Howard J. Moyle

Howard was born icon November 5, 1919, at Strawberry Point, Iowa to Edward and Florence (Smith) Moyle. He was raised and educated in the area. Howard was united in marriage to Wilma Jean Nightingale in Elkader on April 22, 1943. Nine children were born icon to this union. Together they resided in the Guttenberg and Marquette area until moving to Marion. They were later divorced and Howard moved to Garnavillo. Since 1998 he has resided at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home. Howard worked as a farm laborer over the years. Howard died at the Northeast Iowa Christian Retirement Community in Strawberry Point on Sunday October 31, 2004. He was Eighty-four years of age. Survivors include his two daughters, Barbara (Jerry) Metzgar of Stewart, Florida, and Nancy (Duane) Eveland of Central City, Iowa; six sons, Jerry (Judy) Moyle, Gail (Pam) Moyle, Tom (Sue) Moyle, Jim (Kristy) Moyle, Steve (Lugene) Moyle and Mike Moyle all of Apache Junction, Arizona; sixteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mildred Wheeler of Strawberry Point. Howard was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter Connie Moyle in infancy; two grandsons, Dale Allen Moyle and Jerald Moyle; and eleven brothers and sisters.

Howard served honorably in the United States Army during World War II.
