Chester Ray “Chet” Walters, 68, died Saturday, October30, 2004 at his home in Colesburg following a sudden illness. He was born icon April 8, 1936 in rural Garber to Lloyd and Florence (Hansel) Walters. In 1945, the family moved to Colesburg. Chet graduated from Colesburg High School in 1956. Chet held various positions, working on farms, Trademark Homes, Webster Lumber and delivering the Telegraph Herald. He was a member of the Northeast Iowa Antique Association, Colesburg Fire Department, Colesburg Commercial Club and an avid Ed-Co sports fan. Survivors include brothers and sisters, Nancy Jane (Lester) VonHandorf, Colesburg, Myrna M. Niehaus, Colesburg, Joseph (Sharon) Walters, New Vienna and Pat (Cathy) Walter, Clear Water, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Darnelle Knipper, and one nephew Scott Knipper.

Ray Koehn, 82, Farmersburg, died Friday, October 29, 2004, at Finley Hospital, Dubuque following a brief illness. He was born icon April 7, 1922 on the family farm, Communia, to William C. and Rose Ann (Behren) Koehn. Ray attended Communia School through eighth grade. He served in the United States Army during WWII in Japan, and was later honorably discharged. Ray farmed all of his life. He loved spending time with family. Ray was a dedicated, proud father and grandfather. He also enjoyed fishing. Ray was united in marriage to Hazel Entwisle on November 22, 1948, at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader, by Rev. Paul F. Kitterer. Five children were born icon to this union. Survivors include his wife, Hazel, Farmersburg; children, David A. Koehn, Elkader, Tim (Jane) Koehn, Elkader, Marlis (Larry) Huinker, Elkader, Tammie (Kent) Severson, St. Olaf, Bonney Jo (Loren) Amsden, Farmersburg; grandchildren, Jessie, Jill, Jacob, Dustin, Danna, Morgan, Megan, Taylor and Haley; great-grandchildren, Jenna, Samantha Jo and Jonah; two sisters, Eileen Kuhse, Cedar Rapids; Rose LaVon (Grant) Matuska, LaCrosse, WI; six brothers, Alvin (Ruby) Koehn, Elkader, William (Sharon) Koehn Jr., Elkader, Leo (Ilse) Koehn, St. Olaf, Milford Koeh, St. Olaf, Edwin Koehn (Special friend Anna Mae, Mt. Vernon) and Richard Roy (Ruth) Koehn, Mt. Vernon. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Evelyn Clark.

Mark W. Bowman, 91, passed away Friday, October 29, 2004, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, Guttenberg, due to natural causes. He was born icon in Clayton County Iowa, to Morris and Bertha (Strube) Bowman on June 27, 1913. Mark was raised on and then farmed the home place until his (Semi) retirement in 1982. He graduated from Elkport High School in 1931. He married Delpha Appel on June 1, 1950 at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg. Two sons were born icon to this union. Together they built a house on the home place where they raised their family. Mark considered himself a hog and dairy farmer, raising and selling purebred Hampshire hog breeding stock, and selling seed corn for Pioneer and Northrup King for over thirty years. He was also very active in many organizations. Mark loved the land and pursued an active role in Farm Bureau for sixty one years where he held positions as President, Director, and Voting Delegate. It was through this organization he spent time lobbying at the local, state and national level for in improved infrastructure for Agriculture. In addition he served as Soil Conservation Commissioner of Northeast Iowa where he helped achieve many projects aimed at protecting the land. Mark was on the County Zoning Board for many years, Township Commissioner, and active in the Republican Party. He also served on the Farm Policy Council under Tom Tauke. Mark was a charter and active member of the Northeast Iowa Antique Association helping out right up through this year’s demonstrations day. Mark and his wife attended the United Church of Christ, where he was also active for many years. In retirement, Mark pursued woodworking and traveling. He enjoyed the journey to the end, socializing with friends, family and neighbors, often over a card game, but always with a smile, a lot of kidding and maybe even a joke or two. Survivors include his wife Delpha, Garber, two sons, Darrell (Peg) Bowman, Redfield, IA and Dennis (Joyce) Bowman, Cedar Falls; one granddaughter, Julia, Cedar Falls; three sisters, Mae Simons, Colesburg, Grace Kuehl, Elkport; Mabel Murphy, Dundee; a special cousin, Beverly Hendrickson, Arcadia, CA as well as the multitude of nieces, nephews and cousins he dearly enjoyed. Preceding him in death were his parents.

George Henry Cole

George Henry Cole was born icon on June 2, 1928, at Huntington, Iowa, to Albert and Iva (Sidles) Cole. He was raised and educated at Estherville, Iowa, attended business school, and entered the United States Army where he served in the Korean Conflict. George was united in marriage to Frances P. Ford on April 19, 1954, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville. Five children were born icon to this union. Together they resided in several communities in Northeast Iowa. George farmed and worked at a farm implement business as a bookkeeper, in management, and as a sales representative. He has been a resident of the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester since April of 2001. George died following a long illness on Tuesday, October 26, 2004, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. He was seventy-six years of age. Survivors include four daughters, Mary Ann Brady of Mesa, Arizona, Patricia (Larry) ODell of Dundee, Kathy Cook of Manchester and Nancy (Burton) Oehler also of Manchester; ten grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his wife, Frances; his parents Albert and Iva Cole; one son in infancy; and one brother, Arthur Cole.

He was in the United States Army where he served in the Korean Conflict

George loved fishing, singing, dancing, and family especially the grandchildren.

Betty Louise Wagner

Betty Louise “Betty Lou” Scott was born icon November 5, 1922, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Clyde C. and Grace (Hutton) Scott. She was united in marriage to Harold Eugene Wagner on October 14, 1944, in Midland, Texas. Three children were born icon to this union. Betty worked as a school nurse for Dysart-Geneseo School, an industrial nurse at Clinton, a surgical nurse at Grundy Center, was employed as the head of health services at The Iowa Braille School in Vinton, and helped originate the state hospice program while in Nevada, Iowa. Harold and Betty retired to Bella Vista, Arkansas in 1983. In 2000 they moved to Manchester. Since June of 2003, Betty has resided at the Westview Care Center in Britt. Betty died suddenly at Westview Care Center in Britt on Tuesday morning, October 26, 2004. She was eighty-one years of age. Survivors include her three children, Rev. David (Candace) Wagner of Garner, Robert Wagner of Greenwood, Arkansas, and Nancy (Ron) Engstrom of Reynolds, Illinois; five grandchildren; two great-granddaughter; and two brothers, Albert Scott of Red Oak and Keith Scott of Clear Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold in 2003; and three sisters, Jean Bell and two in infancy.

She was a 1940 graduate of Marion High School and a 1944 graduate of St. Lukes School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids.

Francis LeRoy Williams was born icon January 25, 1939, at Tennessee, Illinois to Charles and Anna (Badger) Williams. He received his education in the Manchester area and graduated from Manchester High School in 1959. Francis was united in marriage to Dianne Gassman on September 28, 1963, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Edgewood. He was employed at Allis-Chalmers in Cedar Rapids, Allen & Appleby in Manchester, Link Belt in Cedar Rapids until he started his own business Williams Electric. He was a long-time member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a Manchester Volunteer Fire Fighter for eighteen years. Francis died at University of Iowa Hospital & Clinic in Iowa City on Tuesday, October 26, 2004, following a brief illness. He was sixty-five years of age. Survivors include his wife, Dianne; three children, Cheryl Williams of Cedar Rapids, Mark (Sherry) Williams of Manchester, and Craig Williams of Manchester; one granddaughter, Olivia Williams; six siblings, Larry (Donna) Williams of Ryan, Jerry (Lynda) Williams of Marion, Judy (Chuck) Bemer of Cedar Rapids, Bill Williams of Manchester, Carolyn Williams-White of Manchester, Dennis Williams of Logansport, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Francis in death were his parents; one daughter, Stacie in 1987;one brother, Chuck Williams; and one sister, Pam Carroll-Jones.

Mary Louise Ross

Mary was born icon February 20, 1926, in Delaware County, Iowa, to Otto and Mary (Poggemiller) Timmerman. She was raised and educated in the area attending rural school and the Manchester High School. Mary was united in marriage to William “Bill” Ross on September 29, 1944 in Delaware County. Five sons were born icon to this union. Together they resided in Manchester. Over the years Mary worked at the Good Neighbor Home, Delaware County Memorial Hospital and with the West Delaware School. After a battle with cancer Mary died Thursday afternoon, May 12, 2005 at her home in Manchester. She was seventy-nine years of age. .Survivors include her sons, Gary (Elaine) Ross of Manchester, Harlan (Doris) Ross of Fort Dodge, Steve (Sandra) Ross of Manchester, Randy Ross of Manchester, and Rick (Sandra) Ross of Manchester; thirteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; four brothers, Earl (Bernadine) Timmerman of Freeport, Illinois, Allen (Dorothy) Timmerman of Manchester, Harlan (Mary) Timmerman of Waterloo; and Milo (Mary) Timmerman of Delhi; and one sister, Della (Bob) Ruppert of Iowa City. Mary was preceded in death by her husband William in 1978, parents, Otto and Mary Timmerman; two brothers, Alfred and Everett Timmerman; two sisters, Elsie Moser, and Gladys O’Dell; and a special friend Elmer Fleckenstein.

Mary was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and Eagles. She will be remembered as one who enjoyed her family, bingo, fishing, and her bird, Charlie Brown.

Marvin Douglas Flack, 87, Postville, died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at Kahl Home, Davenport, following a long illness. He was born icon May 30, 1917, in Harpers Ferry, to Vern and Alys (Clausen) Flack. Marvin attended country school through the seventh grade. He was united in marriage to Cassilda Tindell on May 27, 1939, in Postville. Two children were born icon to this union. Marvin owned and operated Flack Manufacturing in Postville for many years before his retirement. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, woodworking and gardening. Survivors include his children, Carol (Gene) Thompson, Davenport and James Flack, Fridley, MN; two grandchildren, Andrew Thompson, Davenport, Theodore Thompson, Albia and one sister, Mildred Larson, Waukon. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in August, 1985, and two brothers, Wayne and Manford Flack.
