Carol Jo Ann Worm was born icon October 16, 1952, in Manchester, Iowa, to James R. and Lorene E. (Lindemier) Worm. She was raised and educated in Manchester. Carol Jo worked at the Vocational Center in Manchester until 1984 when she moved to Dubuque. She was employed by the Dubuque Area Residential Care Facility until January 2005. Carol Jo died on Sunday, May 1, 2005, at St. Luke’s Living Center West in Cedar Rapids, where she has been a resident. She was fifty-two years of age. Survivors include her brother, Roger B. (Sandi) Worm of Manchester; two sisters, Linda K. (Jim) Winchip of Mount Vernon and Terri Sue Dietrich of Durham, California; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Carol Jo was preceded in death by her parents, James and Lorene Worm; maternal grandparents, Todd & Vi Lindemier; and paternal grandparents, Bennie and Gladys Worm.

Carol Jo enjoyed being with her family, old movies, music, and cats.

Alo M. Taake, 87, of rural Elkader, died Saturday, April 30, 2005, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, following a long illness. She was born icon September 14, 1917, in rural Guttenberg to Clarence and Anna (Schroeder) Morarend. She was united in marriage to Waldo Taake on November 17, 1937, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center. Four children were born icon to this union. They farmed and made their home where she continued to reside until her death. Alo was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid, Farm Bureau organizations and the Readlanders Club. She enjoyed embroidery, cooking, baking, gardening and flowers. Survivors include her children, Waldeen Taake, Elkader, Adeline (Ken) Zanzie, Marion and Angeline Taake, Marion; three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Megan and Alicia Zanzie and a sister, Arleen Peuker, Mesa, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, DeWayne, who died in infancy, her husband, Waldo on January 22, 1996 and a brother, Earl Morarend.

Francis E. Red Quinn

Francis E. “Red” Quinn, age 75 of 510 W. 4th Street, Shawano, WI, formerly of Elkader, died at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay, WI on Wednesday April 27, 2005, following a lengthy illness. He was born icon April 27, 1930, in Strawberry Point, Iowa; the son of the late Virgil and Maxine (Alderson) Quinn. He married Cecile Ann Farmer on July 9, 1949 at Strawberry Point, Iowa. He had lived at Ossian, Iowa until moving to Shawano in 1958 and had been employed by Dubuque Packing and Brown Packing companies as a livestock buyer until retiring in 1994. He was very active in local activities, serving as a SMU Commissioner for 15 years, was instrumental in the Recreation Center development, taught swimming lessons and was a Red Cross Water Training Safety Instructor and a scuba diver instructor and also was a special deputy for Shawano County. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, outdoor activities and raising raspberries. Francis was a member at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and managed the Sacred Heart Hot Lunch Program for many years, was a lector at the church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #2836. Survivors include his wife, Cecile Ann; his children, Dennis (Peggy) Quinn of Green Bay, WI, Dianne (Jon) St. Aubin of EauClaire, WI; grandchildren, S. Robert (Stephanie) Bartelt II, Corey Quinn Bartelt, Erin (Scott) Gutschow, Meghan (Zack) Leimkuehler and great-grandchildren, Greta Gutschow and Emma Leimkuehler.

Bernard M. "Bun" Miller
March 12, 1922 - April 25, 2005

Bernard Marvin Miller was born icon March 12, 1922, south of Manchester to Oris and Etta (Stone) Miller. He was raised and educated in the Manchester area. “Bun” was united in marriage to Rose McMahon on May 1, 1947. They resided in Manchester and he was a partner of Miller and Carradus Construction. He also was a custodian for West Delaware Community Schools until he retired. Rose passed away in 1984. On June 12, 1993, he married Ila Dunham in Manchester. “Bun” died at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester on Monday, April 25, 2005, following an extended illness. He was eighty-three years of age. He is survived by his wife, Ila Miller of Manchester; two sons, Steve (Linda) Miller and Rick (Marilyn) Miller both of Manchester; one daughter, Kris (Charlie) Watkins of Cedar Rapids; one step- son, Terry (Linda) Dunham of Kansas City, Missouri; fifteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Berdina Carradus of Manchester and Evelyn Bush of Oneida. “Bun” was preceded in death by his first wife, Rose in 1984; a daughter, Susan Miller in 1952; four brothers, Harvey, Harold, Melvin, and Donald Miller; and three sisters, Dorothy Miller, Gladys Pugh, and Etta Miller.

He served in the army during World War II.

“Bun” was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, American Legion, and a former Knights of Columbus member. He enjoyed popcorn, playing cards, woodworking, and hunting in his younger years.

Bernadean “Bernie” A. Albert, 79, of Elkader, died Sunday morning, April 24, 2005, at her home following a long illness. She was born icon October 1, 1925, in Clayton Center to LeRoy and Tillie (Koehn) Harnack. She graduated from Elkader High School. She was united in marriage to Gene Albert on December 11, 1976, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Bernie’s first loves were her children and grandchildren, and they returned that love. Holidays were always special to her because she knew that she would be surrounded by family and friends. She loved being outside in her yard, working with her flowers, enjoying nature and visiting with passers by. Bernie had a way with people. Her smile would light up a room, and a joke was never far away. Bernie was someone her family could depend on. She enjoyed working and sharing her joy of work with others. To her family, she was more than a mother, she was a best friend. Survivors include her children, Dennis Browne of Ohio, Diane (Pat) McTaggart of Elkader, Dr. Jerry Browne (fiancée Sharon Setterquist) of Iowa City and Cindy (David) Wilker of Elkader; step-children, Debbie (Mike) Vargason of Oelwein, Tom Albert of Junction City, WI and Steve (Vicki) Albert of Oelwein; thirteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Delores Berger of Volga and Gerry (Ernie) McNeal of Elkader and her mother-in-law, Ann Albert of Junction City, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gene Albert in 1990, and a brother, Kenneth Harnack.

Wanda Jean Plozel, 71, of Monona, died Sunday, April 24, 2005, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, Guttenberg, following a long illness. She was born icon December 9, 1933, at Hawkeye to Walter and Helen (Whickham) Petersen. Wanda attended country schools and went through the eleventh grade at Monona High School. She was united in marriage to Eugene Plozel on February 17, 1951, at Pilgrim Evangelical United Brethren Church of Monona. Four children were born icon to this union. Wanda enjoyed crocheting and spending time with family and friends. She worked as a cook and bartender at the East Side Pub in Monona and the Luana Tap for several years. Survivors include her children, Ron (Doris) Plozel, Luana, Penny (Scott) Peterson, Farmersburg, David Plozel, Monona, Andy (Julie) Plozel, Monona; six grandchildren, Jamie Plozel, Lansing, Teresa Schmelzer, Boscobel, WI, Traci Schmelzer, Prairie du Chien, WI, Kathy Plozel, Waukon, Katie Plozel, Monona, Rebecca Plozel, Monona; two great-grandchildren, Hunter Kugle and Ryan Fralick Jr. and sisters, Linda (LeRoy) Thoma, Broken Arrow, OK, Dorla (Joe) Blockus, New London, Janice (Bob) Saugling, Dubuque and Marilyn (Ralph) Hawkins, Jackson Junction. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1992 and one brother, Marvin Petersen, in infancy.

David John Griswold

David John Griswold was born icon in Independence, Iowa, on August 5, 1949, to Lynn and Leona (Miller) Griswold. He attended school and graduated from East Buchanan High School in 1967. On April 27, 1973, he was united in marriage to Jean Anne Decker at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Winthrop. Two daughters were born icon to this union. They resided in Winthrop where he was employed by Triangle Plastics for thirty-three years. In 1980 they moved to Manchester and David retired in September 2002. David passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, April 23, 2005, following a lengthy illness. He was fifty-five years of age. David is survived by his wife, Jean Anne Griswold of Manchester; two daughters, Anne (Phil) Franck and Amy (Mark) Lyness both of Manchester; two grandchildren, Haley and Hayden Lyness of Manchester; a brother, Dale (Deanna) Griswold of Masonville;mother-in-law, Elizabeth Decker; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lynn and Leona Griswold.

He served in the United States Army Reserve from 1967 to 1973.

David loved being with his family, especially the grandchildren. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and enjoyed antiques, woodworking, and Nascar.

Victor LeRoy Harbaugh

Victor LeRoy Harbaugh, 69, Greeley, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, following a long illness. He was born icon near Greeley on May 26, 1935, to Lula Fern (Harbaugh) Phillips. He was raised by his grandparents, Aaron and Pearl Harbaugh. He graduated from Greeley High School in 1954, at the top of his class. At one time he was a very good artist and baseball player. He worked at Wilson's Packing House, Cedar Rapids for years. He did roofing and worked at the Five Season's Center when it first opened. Victor was united in marriage to Janis Ripple on June 26, 1954, at Greeley. They later divorced. He was preceded in death by his mother. Survivors include his children, Julia (Randy) Coons, Blair Harbaugh and Bruce Harbaugh, Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren; sisters, Ruth (Gary) Holland, Kansas City, MO and Fern Bishop, Henderson, KY and aunts, Ilo Totman and Ruth Harbaugh, both of Edgewood. The family requests that instead of flowers, memorials be directed to Julia Coons, 2222 10th Ave. Marion, IA 52302.
