Paul Eldon Logan was born icon January 5, 1927, in Manchester, Iowa, to Harry and Lucy (Glew) Logan. Paul was united in marriage to Florence Odell on June 22, 1947, at the Methodist Church in Manchester. Eight children were born icon to this union. They were later divorced. Paul farmed south of Manchester in Milo Township, was a feed salesman, drove school bus, and worked at the Manchester Post Office. On June 5, 1977, Paul married Shirley Olson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He was appointed as Postmaster in Quasqueton in 1979, and served in that position until he retired in 1995. In the fall of 2004 they moved back to Manchester. Paul died at his home in Manchester on Thursday, April 7, 2005, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was seventy-eight years of age. Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Manchester and her children; He is also survived by his children, Don (Jan) Logan of Van Horne, Linda (John) Backof of Lititz, Pennsylvania, Beverly (Louis) Lyness of Manchester, Susan Johnson of Chandler, Arizona, Bill (Sue) Logan of Manchester, Sharon (Dan) Stewart of South Wayne, Wisconsin, and Diane Logan of Gilbert, Arizona; twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lucille Arnold of Columbia, South Carolina. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Lucy Logan; a son, Leland Logan in 1979, one brother, Marvin “Pud” Logan; and two sisters, Alice DeLancey and

He enlisted in the Army-Air Force in 1945.

He was raised and educated in Manchester graduating in 1944 from Manchester High School.

Selma Orpha Landsgaard, 92, formerly of St. Olaf, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville, where she has resided since 2000. She was born icon January 25, 1913 on a farm near Elgin. She was the third child of Olavus T. and Belle (Stav) Knudtson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Norwegian at the Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder. Selma was an avid reader; she attended rural school through the eighth grade and graduated from the Elgin High School 1932. She took the Normal Training course for elementary teaching at Upper Iowa University. She taught in rural schools from primary through eighth grade for two years. She was united in marriage to Gunnar Landsgarrd on May 24, 1934, in Waukon. Two daughters were born icon to this union. Selma was a telephone operator in St. Olaf for a time. She then worked as a postal clerk in St. Olaf, later becoming postmaster which she dearly loved. She retired from the post office at the age of seventy. Selma was a great bridge player. She loved to listen to her daughters sing, and attended many of their concerts while in college. Selma also attended many of the school concerts where her daughters were teaching. She was active in Ladies Aid and WELCA. Survivors include her two daughters, Glenda Shirley (Pete) Timmer of Allison and Virginia Ann Luster of Harpers Ferry; grandchildren, Erik (Jesi) Luster of Cresco, Randi (Rev. Kris) Snyder of Hanlontown and Bjorn Luster of Decorah; a newborn great-granddaughter, Kjersti Margit Snyder; and a brother, Elmer Knudtson of Guttenberg. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gunnar on March 18, 1982, her son-in-law, James Luster in 1988, a sister, Myrtle Butikofer, a brother, Orvin Knudtson, a niece, Ramona Moore and a nephew, Ronald Knudtson.

Ishmael Palmer Hansel, 87, of Strawberry Point, died Monday morning, April 4, 2005, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home, following a brief illness. He was born icon July 6, 1917, near Volga, to Otto and Elsie Grace (Palmer) Hansel. He was united in marriage to Margaret Stern on June 10, 1945, in Fredericksburg. Three children were born icon to this union. Ishmael farmed his entire life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and spending time with family and friends. He would share produce from his apple orchard and garden. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Hansel, Strawberry Point; two children, Ronald Hansel, Anchorage, AK and Ardith Hansel, Champaign, IL; three grandchildren, Shane Hansel, Shannon (Brandi) Hansel and Shaun Hansel; a great-grandchild, Colton Hansel; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca Hansel, Wellman and a brother, Warren (Helene) Hansel, Edgewood. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Jack Hansel on July 19, 2003.

Marjorie M. Kliefoth, 77, Monona, IA died Monday, April 4, 2005, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, following a sudden illness. She was born icon on July 2, 1927, in rural Monona, to Albert and Annie (Chapek) Holly, and was baptized at the Methodist Church in Monona on July 3, 1927. Marjorie graduated from Monona High School. Marjorie was united in marriage to Bernell Kliefoth on January 9, 1948. Three children were born icon to this union. Survivors include her children, Janice (Doug) Bachman, Monona and Lanny (Jeanine) Kliefoth, St. Lucas; grandchildren, Mike (Rhonda) Bachman, Monona, Chet (Rachel) Bachman, Monona, Alyssa, Erin and Zach Kliefoth, St. Lucas; great-grandchildren, Casey, Cody and Kelby Bachman and Kaylee Bachman; sister, Ellen Voss, Monona; brothers, Louis (Carole) Holly, Monticello and Kenneth (Helen) Holly, Cedar Rapids and sister-in-law, Jeanette Eglseder, Garnavillo. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on October 20, 2002; daughter, Joni Egan; brother, Jim Holly and two brothers-in-law, Arthur Voss and Allen Eglseder.

Lyle Fred Hartman, 79, of Greeley, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester, following a long illness. He was born icon September 14, 1925, in Pearson, WI to Fred and Elsie (Schoenecht) Hartman. He graduated from Antigo High School in Antigo, WI. After serving in the US Army, Lyle attended college at Iowa State University in Ames. He was united in marriage to Grace Jackson in 1950. In 1963, he purchased his farm near Greeley, where he has continued to reside. Lyle was a livestock buyer for various packing companies, retiring in 1999. He loved his farm and working with livestock. He enjoyed taking family fishing trips, and his two dogs were very special to him. Survivors include his children, Cynthia Nigh, Lincoln, NE, Dr. Shirley Hartman MD and her husband, Bob Tate, Jacksonville, FL, Valerie Paulmann, Pardeeville, WI and Jon Hartman and his wife, Elena, Findley, OH; nine grandchildren, Paul, Dylan, Chelsea, Jasmine, Heather, Katie, Megan, Emma and Roman; three sisters, Edna Kjar, Chicago, IL, Violet Flannery, Antigo, WI and Lillian Serviss and her husband, Joe, Chicago, IL and his two pet dogs, Tasha and Lucas. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Henry and Roland and two sisters, Merna Parsons and Mildred Eichelberg.

Belva Louise Schuety, 70, of Elkader, died Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids following a brief illness. She was born icon at Oelwein on December 29, 1934, to Herbert and Harriette (Conner) Hesner. She was baptized and confirmed at the Strawberry Point Methodist Church. Belva was educated in the Strawberry Point Schools, graduating with the class of 1953. She had the honor of being the first Worthy Advisor of the Strawberry Point Rainbow Girls. On October 25, 1955, she was united in marriage to Carlus Schuety in Strawberry Point. Two daughters were born icon to this union. Belva was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, Mary Circle and the Hi Neighbor Club. She enjoyed word search puzzles, watching Jeopardy and other mind games. She loved history and enjoyed genealogy. Belva and her husband spent many hours driving the countryside, visiting with people and their granddaughter, Elisha. Survivors include her daughter, Twyla (Kenneth) Walz, Elkader; her granddaughter, Elisha Ihde and her friend, Brett Johnson, La Crosse, WI; two brothers-in-law, Richard Schuety, Chariton and Larry Schuety, Aurora; two sisters-in-law, Ruth (Dick) Witte, Alexandria, VA and Betty Boots, Elkader and four nieces, Dawn (Mike) Anzallo, Maryland, Lynn Witte and her fiancé Steve Miller, Maryland, Toni (Dan) Moser, Escondido, CA and Sue (Doug) Larson, Elkader. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carlus, a daughter, Sarah Louise, a granddaughter, LaTonya Walz, an infant brother, Easton Hesner.

Philip Manuel Troester, 90, Monona, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital, Prairie du Chien, WI, following a brief illness. He was born icon November 15, 1914, in Millville Township to George and Gertrude (Collins) Troester. Philip attended country schools through the ninth grade. Philip was the first man in Clayton County to be drafted into the United States Army for WW II. He was in the Army from March 17, 1941, to October 4, 1945, when he was honorably discharged, serving in Sicily, Salerno, Rome, Southern France and Central Europe. Philip was a hired hand for many years. He enjoyed playing cards and loved sight seeing throughout the country side. Survivors include one sister, Nellie (Carl) Johanningmeier, Monona; one brother, Lester Troester, Guttenberg; sister-in-law, Leona Troester, Monona; a special nephew Allan (Laurie) Troester and their children, Aaron and Ashley, Monona; several other nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Arthur Troester, two sisters and husbands, Bernice (Frank) Walters and Emma (Thomas) McDowell and sister-in-law, Jessie Troester.

Elizabeth (Betty) Jane Kramer

Elizabeth (Betty) Jane Kramer, 90, of Oelwein, formerly of Independence, passed away Friday, March 25, 2005, at Sutter Roseville Hospital, Roseville, Calif. following a long illness. Since her husband’s death one year ago Betty had been living near her daughter in Folsom, Calif. Betty was born icon on March 15, 1915 in Independence to Levi and Irene McLaughlin. She attended school in Independence and went to work upon graduation. Betty met Art Kramer while they were both employees of Buchanan County. They were united in marriage on June 11, 1939, at the Methodist Church in Jesup. Their son Ronald Lee was born icon in 1940. Betty spent the years during World War II living with her parents and siblings while Art served in the South Pacific. New employment took the family to Cambridge, Nebraska where daughter Katherine Kay was added to the family in 1949. Art practiced as a Civil Engineer and worked on various construction projects throughout the West. Betty was always by his side. She was very active in her church and her children’s activities. She especially enjoyed sewing, bridge, gardening and reading. In her later years she was a whiz at crossword puzzles. The highlight of her life was the addition of her three grandchildren to the family. She thought nothing could be better until she was blessed with 5 great-grandchildren. Betty reached her greatest milestone when she recently celebrated her 90th birthday on March 14, 2005 with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister, niece and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 30, 2005, at the First Congregational Church in Elkader, Iowa, with the Rev. William Gentry II officiating. Burial will follow in East Side Cemetery, Elkader. Friends may call after 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the church. Betty is survived by her children Ron L. Kramer, Omak Wash., and Kathy (Steve) Herbst, Folsom, Calif; three grandchildren, Lisa Lockhart, Ron V. Kramer and Erika Adell; five great grandchildren, Cody, Lauren, Kaelan, Alexander, and Luke; and one sister Norma Cumberland. Her husband, parents, one brother and three sisters preceded her in death.
