Ila Mae Best, 75, Garnavillo, formerly of Elkader, died Thursday, March 10, 2005, at her son Larry’s home, 24392 Holly Avenue, Garnavillo, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born
July 30, 1929, in rural Farmersburg to Edna (Kalke) and Marvin Henning. Ila Mae attended country school, graduated from Farmersburg High School and graduated from Elkader Jr. College. She taught country school full time for three years and was a substitute teacher for thirty years. She was united in marriage to Carlys Best on April 9, 1950, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Farmersburg. Two children were born
to this union. Ila Mae was a caring and giving person all of her life. She loved spending time with family and friends. She was a member of the Northeast Iowa Antique Tractor Association, Garnavillo TOPS, Allis connection antique tractor club, an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center, Sunday school teacher for many years and an avid Iowa Hawkeye basketball fan. Survivors include her children, Larry (Shirley) Best, Garnavillo, Dale (Lori) Best, Zephyr, TX; one grandchild, Mitchell (Nicole) Best; four step-grandchildren, Josh Sullivan, J.P. Sullivan, Staci (Dr. Kevin) Esch, Eric Welter; one great-grandchild, Trenton Best; two step-grandchildren, Gabriella Esch and Bayleigh Sullivan; one brother, Dale (Bonnie) Henning, McGregor; one sister, VaNalle (Don) Miller, Waterloo; one sister-in law, Iva Nell Henning, Decorah.; She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Donald Henning.

John Joseph Fannon, 73, of Edgewood, died at his home March 8, 2005, following a long illness. He was born
November 13, 1931, in Buck Creek, Iowa, to James and Bernadette (Sheridan) Fannon. He attended Greeley High School through the eleventh grade and graduated from Edgewood High School. John entered the US Army on December 5, 1952 and was honorably discharged on February 15, 1955. He was united in marriage to Beverly Theel on October 27, 1956 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Edgewood. Six children were born
to this union. John hauled milk in the area for many years. In 1957, he built his welding shop and he also worked at John Deere in Dubuque for nine years. He continued to operate the shop until his health made it impossible to do so. He made floats every year for the various parades and he was an avid bike rider. Survivors include his wife, Beverly Fannon, Edgewood, his six children, Joe (Cheryl) Fannon, Manchester, Jerry (Barb) Fannon, Bozeman, MT, Jim (Lori) Fannon, Edgewood, Joan (David) Preuss, Edgewood, J.P. Fannon, West Palm Beach, FL, Judy (Trent) Bugbee, Dubuque; eleven grandchildren, Trevor, Tyler, Zack, Morgan, Jordan, Ryan, Kayla and Carly Fannon, Kely Hemann, Riley Preuss, and Taken Engelken; two brothers, Paul (Virginia) Fannon, and Clair (Inez) Fannon all of Edgewood and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Frances Hursh and Mary Fannon; a brother, Tom Fannon; a nephew, Neil Fannon and a niece, Joyce Fannon.

Alice M. Larson, 90, Monona, died Monday, March 7, 2005, at the Guttenberg Care Center, Guttenberg, following a short illness. She was born
August 4, 1914, in rural Clayton County to Joseph and Mayme (Lestina) Plozel. She was united in marriage to Clarence Larson on February 24, 1941, at E.U.B. Parsonage in Monona by Rev. Raduge. Alice was a homemaker who loved spending time with family and friends, quilting and stamp collecting. Survivors include one niece; four nephews and two sisters-in-law, Wanda Plozel, Monona and Florence Plozel Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on August 27, 1992; two brothers, Eugene and Leonard Plozel and one sister, Leona Plozel in infancy.

Frank Leslie Gibbs was born
at Finley Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa, on December 15, 1911, to Frank L. and E. Gertrude (Orvis) Gibbs. He grew up east of Earlville on the family farm. Leslie graduated from Earlville Consolidated School in 1929 and attended I.S.U. at Ames in 1930, taking a Dairy Herdsman Course of Study. He later received a degree in accounting. Leslie was united in marriage to Nina L. Foster on June 1, 1933, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Together they farmed east of Earlville until 1940 they moved west of Manchester. In 1951, Leslie and Nina moved to Manchester and he became a technician for the Delaware County Artificial Breeding Association a position he followed for ten years, serving as a bookkeeper and manager. In April 1960, Leslie was employed as an accountant at Henderson Manufacturing Company at Manchester for five years. Leslie was elected director for the West Delaware County Community School District and resigned in 1965 to take the Board Secretary and Business Manager position until his retirement in 1977. Leslie died at the Good Neighbor Home, in Manchester on Sunday, March 6, 2005, following an extended illness. He was ninety-three years of age. Survivors include a son, Michael (Kathryn) Gibbs of Springfield, Virginia; two daughters, Patsy (Kenneth) Deerberg of Germantown, Maryland, and Constance (Richard) Saunders of Manchester; eight grandchildren, Rodney (Thresa) Saunders of Oak Island, North Carolina, Penny (Gerald) Zaruba of Cedar Rapids, Candy (Michael) Flynn of Middleton, Wisconsin, Michael (Lisa Tayerle) Gibbs, Jr. of Silver Springs, Maryland, Kontiki (Michael) Hunnicutt of Puyallup, Washington, Kristina Gibbs of Colorado Spring, Colorado, Amoret (Shane) Wingerson of Boyds, Maryland, and Brad (Lori) Deerberg of Cedar Rapids; six great-grandchildren, Andrew Saunders, Elizabeth Saunders, Jeromy Hunnicutt, Erin Wingerson, Kelly Wingerson, and Shannon Wingerson; a sister-in-law, Susan Gibbs of Strawberry Point. Leslie was preceded in death by his wife, Nina L. Gibbs; two brothers, Harry and James Gibbs; sisters-in-law, Ella Gibbs and Alberta Foster; brother-in-law, James Foster.
Leslie served as Board of Directors for the Northeast Iowa Boy Scout Council and received the Silver Beaver Award, he was on the Methodist Church Board, he served as Manchester City Councilperson, and was appointed as a representative for Manchester on the Eastern Iowa Housing Authority Council.

Lucas Charles Burns Popenhagen, thirteen days, son of Alex Charles Popenhagen and Kendra Ann Burns was born
at home on February 17, 2005. Even though Lucas was in our lives for a short period of time, he has touched the hearts of family and friends by looking at us with his bright blue eyes! We thank God everyday for the two weeks we had with Lucas. He proved to all of us how much a fighter he was. We learned that he hated having his feet covered or touched, loved being held by loved ones, and really liked laying on his right side. He will be greatly missed by everyone who loved him. He died on Wednesday, March 2, 2004 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids from complications of birth. Survivors in addition to his parents are two uncles, Chris Burns, Iowa City, Kyle Burns, Elkader; one aunt, Kenan (Brock) Willey, Ankeny; paternal grandparents, Ken and LeAnn Popenhagen, Elgin; maternal grandparents; Monty and Lori Burns, Elkader; paternal great-grandparents, Russell and Francis Popenhagen, Wadena; Charles and Pat Baumler, Wadena; great-grandmother, Dora Medberry, Elgin; maternal great-grandfather, Charles Eaton Sr., Elkader; paternal great-great-grandmother, Ellen Stevens, Cresco and maternal great-great-grandmother, Mabel Kneeskern, Monona. Lucas was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandmother, Connie Eaton; paternal great-grandfather, Robert Burns and paternal great-grandmother, Roberta Prew.

Bernice Loretta Williams, 80, of Garnavillo, formerly of Elkport, died Tuesday morning, March 1, 2005, at the Elkader Care Center, following a long illness. She was born
November 18, 1924, near Luxemburg to John and Kathern (Rieff) Henkels. She attended Luxemburg Catholic Schools. She was united in marriage to Marvin Williams on February 5, 1951, in Luxemburg. Three children were born
to this union. They made their home in the Elkport area, where Bernice farmed with her husband throughout her life. After her husband’s death on July 14, 1989, Bernice moved to Garnavillo. She resided there until entering the Elkader Care Center in April of 2003. She will be remembered as one who enjoyed gardening and working with flowers. Survivors include her children, Debra Williams, Garnavillo, Darlene (Brian) Minger, Garber and Randy Williams, Bettendorf; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a sister, Frances McLane, Guttenberg. Besides her husband, Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Coletta Meyers, Calista Pottebaum and Catherine Erdmann and six brothers, Al, John, Gebhard, Cletus, Jerome and Ervin Henkels.

Joel Bryan Haynes was born
May 29, 1963, in Manchester, Iowa, to Charles and Jean (Johnson) Haynes. Joel was afflicted with autism at an early age. He lived and was cared for in his home in Manchester until the age of eleven. At the age of eleven, he lived in residential schools in Wisconsin and Iowa. The past twenty years he spent at the Woodward Resource Center in Woodward, Iowa. Joel passed away at the Woodward Resource Center on Monday, February 28, 2005, following a sudden illness. He was forty-one years of age. Survivors include his father, Charles Haynes of Manchester; his mother, Jean (Bjorn) Hedberg of Sweden; five siblings, Heather Haynes of Chicago, Jonathan Haynes of Japan, Torrey (Katie) Haynes of Seattle, Washington, Chanya (Ron) Huber of Delhi; and Mia Haynes of Seattle, Washington; his maternal grandparents, Leslie and Vera Johnson of Cedar Rapids; one niece, Mahayla Harrison; and one nephew, Cy Huber. Joel was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Harry and Erma Haynes.

Ernest A. “Ernie” Martens the sons of William and Bertha (March) Martens was born
February 26, 1920, at their farm home in Delaware County. He was united in marriage to Marjorie L. Adams on May 6, 1944, in Manchester. They lived in Greeley for about two years then moved to Strawberry Point for one year, moving to Manchester in 1947. Ernie was employed as a livestock buyer for over thirty years. Ernie died Sunday afternoon, February 27, 2005, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester, following a lengthy illness. He was eighty-five years of age. Survivors include one son, Randy Martens of Manchester; one daughter, Lori (Charlie) Koch of Manchester; one foster daughter, Cheryl (Douglas) Mason of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin; three grandchildren, Shawn (Norissa) Sullivan of Avon Park, Florida, Chad Sullivan (and his special friend, Holly Halverson) of West Union and Michelle Sullivan of Manchester; two great-grand children, Cassandra and Kelli Sullivan; one sister, Hilda Schuchmann of Manchester; and numerous nieces and cousins. Ernie was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie; his parents, William and Bertha Martens; one son in infancy; three brothers, Herman, Harold and March; and three sisters, Bertha, Freida, and Gladys.
Ernie was a member of First Lutheran Church in Manchester where he served on the Church Council and was active in other church activities. He was also a member of the Eagles Club.
