Gertrude Mary Willson Carolan, 88, died Sunday, February, 27, 2005, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, IA. She was born icon August 15, 1916, in Canoe Township north of Decorah, IA to Frank and Sarah (Welsh) Willson. She attended school at Burr Oak and Decorah. She was united in Holy Matrimony to Raphael Carolan on November 22, 1934, at St. Benedict’s Church, Decorah. After living a short time near Peosta and Anamosa, IA the family moved to Elkader in 1942. Gertie and Ray were married sixty four years and worked as partners in the family business. She was involved in many community and church activities. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the church guild, and the Elkader Country Club. She loved and was loved by many in the community for her friendliness, sense of humor, and her gift of conversation. She is survived by one son, Douglas and his wife Lois, Overland Park, KS; two daughters, Janice Hamilton and husband, Bob, Barrington, IL and Victoria Carolan and her husband Howard Mayer, Elkader and a daughter-in-law, La Rae Carolan of Elkader. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, Stephen Carolan, Peoria, IL, Daniel Carolan, St. Olaf, Michael Carolan, Springville, Robert Carolan, Dubuque, Thomas Carolan, Tampa, FL, Jennifer Carolan, Coralville, Patrick Carolan, Olathe, KS, Martin Carolan, Charlotte, NC, Robert Hamilton, Jr. and Colleen Vap, Cedarburg, WI; two step-grandchildren, Teryl Mayer, Rolling Meadows, IL and Clayton Mayer, Chapel Hill, NC; thirteen great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ann Aschim and Margaret Graves, Decorah and Loretta Owens, Marion; two brothers, Charles Willson, Cedar Rapids and James Willson, Marion; two sisters-in-law Irene Wilson, Bloomingon, IL and Dorothy Wilson, Guttenberg and a special niece, Madonna Wilson of Decorah. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Raphael, a son, David and twin infant sons Francis and Thomas, a sister, Florence Carolan and two brothers, Paul and Robert Wilson.

Dorothy Mae Steen, 72, Elkader, died Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, following a sudden illness. She was born icon April 21, 1932, near Elkader, IA to Herman and Marguerite (Nichols) Fascher. She graduated from Elkader High School. Dorothy worked for the telephone company for a few years before her marriage. She was united in marriage to Lelund Steen on June 1, 1952, at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader. Two children were born icon to this union. Dorothy farmed with her husband in the Elkader area for many years. Survivors include her husband, Lelund Steen, Elkader; daughter, Joyce (Robert) Priem, Elkader; three grandchildren Travis (Amy) Priem, Colesburg, Brandon Priem, Elkader, and Shawna Priem, Elkader and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Chezney Priem. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, David Steen in 1977.

Allan L. Dahling, 69, of rural Strawberry Point, IA, died suddenly at his home on Monday, February 21, 2005. He was born icon April 14, 1935, in Littleport, IA to William and Doris (Nading) Dahling. He graduated from Littleport High School in 1952. Allan entered the US Army in 1956, and was honorably discharged in 1959. He was united in marriage to Lynn Hastings on August 16, 1992. Allan farmed his entire life in the Littleport area. He loved farming, his horses and cats, attending auctions and was an avid sports fan. He also spent over fifty years attending the Clayton County Fair. Survivors include his wife Lynn Dahling, Strawberry Point; three step-sons, Chris Meyer, Platteville, WI, Justin Meyer, Edgewood and Matt Meyer, Strawberry Point; a sister, Orvelda (Ralph) French, Cedar Rapids; a brother, Daryl (Fonda) Dahling, Strawberry Point and several nieces and nephews.

Thomas Robert Huggins was born icon March 9, 1923, in Hopkinton to William Arthur and Emma (Olmstead) Huggins. He was raised on a farm south of Aurora and also lived in Wadena and Fayette. While living in Alburnett he worked in Marion for Town House Motel. Thomas lived most of his life in Dundee, employed as farm laborer and Kline Feeds. Thomas enjoyed doing “junking work” for a hobby. Thomas died at Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood on Sunday, February 20, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was eighty-one years of age. Survivors include six siblings, Dorothy Chapman of Oelwein, Betty Chapman of Oelwein, Paul (Mae) Huggins of Branson, Missouri, Velma (Larry) Garrigus of Oelwein, Richard (Regina) Huggins of Oelwein, Sharon Kula of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, James Huggins; and two sisters Helen Avis and Maude Avis.

Leona Marie was born icon June 8, 1910, at Sibley, Iowa, to Joseph and Anna Kruse. She was raised and educated in the Delaware area. On April 7, 1942, Leona was united in marriage to John F. O’Connor in Earlville. One son was born icon to this union. Together they farmed south of Masonville. In 1968 they moved to Masonville. Leona worked at Alden’s Tavern for several years. She moved to the Good Neighbor Home in December of 2000. Leona died at the Good Neighbor Home on Monday, February 14, 2005, after an extended illness. She was ninety-four years of age. Leona is survived by her son, Joseph (Jean) O’Connor of Harpers Ferry; two grandsons Patrick O’Connor and Michael (Heather) O’Connor both of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Anna Mae (Barney) Costello and Margaret Hurlburt both of Clinton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John O’Connor on November 2, 1995; and ten siblings.

Robert E, "Bob" Wilson

Robert E. “Bob” Wilson was born icon on July 27, 1940, in Iowa City, the second oldest child of Andrew G. and Berneice N. (Candler) Wilson of Manchester. He was raised in Manchester and graduated from Manchester High School in 1958. Bob joined the U.S. Air Force in 1958 and served with distinction in Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Viet Nam. On July 6, 1974, Bob married his loving wife, Darlene H. Lukan in Delhi, Iowa. Together they raised a loving son, Danny. Bob served in the U.S. Army until his retirement in 1984 at Fort Knox, Kentucky. For a short time, Bob, Darlene, and Danny made their home in Hodgenville, Kentucky before turning to Manchester in 1986. He was employed at the Lukan’s Service Station the last ten years. Thanks to the generosity of an unknown donor, Bob received a heart transplant in 1995 and had a full and wonderful ten years before leaving us. Bob died after a short illness on February 13, 2005. He was sixty-four years of age. Survivors include his wife, Darlene Wilson of Manchester; a son, Danny Wilson of Farley; eight sisters, Sharon Troy of Orange, California, Delores Wilson of Williamsburg, Susie (John) Romig of Edgewood, Kathy Wilson of Hanahan, South Carolina, Connie Wilson of Thornton, Colorado, Bubbins (Kenny) Morgan of Cedar Rapids, Mary (Tom) Hyde of North Glenn, Colorado, and Mary Jean (Steve) Gill of Ridgeville, South Carolina; two brothers, Jack (Maggie) Wilson of Granbury, Texas, and Jim (Karen) Wilson of Marion; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Berneice (Candler) Wilson; and three brothers, Jerry, Ed, and Merlin Wilson.

Bob was an avid fisherman and classic car collector, participating in many shows and receiving many awards and trophies. Bob was a member of the Tri County Sportsmen Club and also the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veterans.

Dean Joseph "Killer" Engelken
May 17, 1959 - February 12, 2005

Dean was born icon May 17, 1959 in Manchester to Joseph and Viola (Loeffelholz) Engelken. Dean was united in marriage to Lori Bockenstedt. Two sons were born icon to this union. Together they resided in Manchester. Dean was employed at Exide in Manchester over the years. Dean was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He will be remembered as one who enjoyed motorcycling, boating, fishing, hunting, and being with friends and family. Dean died unexpectedly Saturday, February 12, 2005, at his friends residence in Manchester. He was forty-five years of age. Survivors include his two sons, Jason and A.J. (Alex); former wife, Lori Engelken all of Manchester; his parents, Joseph and Viola Engelken of Manchester; three brothers, Ron (Gloria) Engelken of Elko, Minnesota, Wayne (Janet) Engelken of Greeley, and Gary (Julie) Engelken of Manchester; two sisters, Elaine (Dan) Dunkel of Palo, and Nancy (Mark) Recker of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews. Dean was preceded in death by his grandparents, Frank and Theresa Loeffelholz and Ben and Agatha Engelken.

He was raised and educated in the area graduating from West Delaware High School in 1978.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established for the education of Jason and A.J. Dean will be missed by family and friends.

Harlyn H. Wessel
November 26, 1927 - February 10, 2005

Harlyn H. Wessel, 77, Edgewood, IA, died Thursday, February 10, 2005, at the Regional Medical Center, Manchester, Iowa following a long illness. He was born icon on November 26, 1927, in Woodcenter, IA, the son of Howard and Cora (Brockmeyer) Wessel. He attended country school through the eighth grade. He joined the U.S. Army on October 11, 1950. He was awarded the Army Occupational Medal (Japan), United Nations Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star and one Overseas Bar. He attained the rank of Corporal prior to his honorable discharge on October 4, 1952. Harlyn was united in marriage to Henrietta Lubben on September 19, 1953, in Decorah, Iowa. Three children were born icon to this union. He was a lifelong mechanic. His career started with Art Welterlen & Sons in Edgewood, and the last twelve years were at Del Clay in Edgewood, retiring in 1991. Harlyn loved working on tractors and worked on them until his health prevented him from doing so. He was a longtime and dedicated member of American Legion Post # 512, and on March 15, 2003, was certified as a member in good standing for over fifty years. Harlyn was a fireman with the Edgewood Fire Department for over fifty years. He rarely missed a fire call and was always there to help with maintenance or putting on chains if weather demanded. He was a member of the Edgewood Bible Church where he was a trustee. He will be remembered as one who loved to visit with friends and family. Survivors include his loving wife, Henrietta Wessel, Edgewood; one daughter, Julie Bushaw, Minneapolis, MN; two sons, Steven (Julie) Wessel, Colesburg, Jerry (Marcia) Wessel, Edgewood; five grandchildren, Jennifer Bushaw, Jaci Simmons, Shanna (Kurt) Sperfslage, Shane Wessel and Caleb Wessel; four great-grandchildren, Chase Bushaw, Zachery Simmons, Lexi Bushaw and Taylor Sperfslage and a brother Eugene Wessel, Savanna, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Donna Kruger. Harlyn was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and will be missed by all who knew him.
