Howard M. McDonald was born icon August 6, 1930, in Seattle, Washington, to Mathew and Helen (Dorwart) McDonald. He was raised and educated in the area. Howard served honorably in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Howard was united in marriage to Iris Pratt in 1956. Three children were born icon to this union. Together they resided at Rosemead, California. Howard worked for IML Freight as a freight handler for twenty years and L.A. International Airport as a police officer for eight years. Iris died in 1993. Howard later retired to Covina, California. In 2004 he moved to Ryan, Iowa to reside with his daughter due to failing health. Howard died Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at the Edgewood Convalescent Home. He was seventy-four years of age. Survivors his three children, Steven McDonald of Covina, California, Cathy (Glen) Duggan of Ryan, Iowa, and Tracey McFadden of Manchester, Iowa; Eleven grandchildren; and one brother, Art McDonald of New York, New York. Howard was preceded in death by his wife; parents; son-in-law, Charles McFadden; one brother, Donald; and three sisters, Evelyn, Marilyn, and Delores.

He served honorably ten years in the United States Air Force

Howard will be remembered as one who enjoyed his family and reading.

Viola F. Trumm

Viola was born icon February 24, 1912, in Halbrite, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Nicholas and Rosena (Atkinson) Wilgenbusch. She was raised and educated in the Hopkinton, Iowa area. She was united in marriage to Arthur Trumm on January 19, 1937, at Sands Springs, Iowa. Six children were born icon to this union. Together they resided south of Coggon from 1937 until 1942. They then moved south of Ryan and farmed. Arthur died November 7, 1975. In 1976, Viola moved from the farm into Coggon to reside. In August of 2004, she moved to Manchester and since January of 2005, has resided at the Good Neighbor Home. Viola was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Coggon and its Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Ehler Country Club of farm wives since 1947. She will be remembered as one who loved her family and enjoyed gardening and sewing. Viola passed away at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester on Tuesday, February 8, 2005, following a brief illness. Survivors include her children, Gerald (Rosalyn) Trumm, Omaha, NE, Lois (Louis) Coleman, Coggon, Jean (Lon) De Moss, Earlville, Joe (Barb) Trumm, Alburnett and Janet (Bill) Mitchell, Brandon; fifteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Myrtle Krogmann, Manchester, Gladys Kirby, Hopkinton, Rose Britt, Delhi, Mary Lauersdorf, Manchester, Herman “Bud” Wilgenbusch, Manchester, Laura (Art) Feldmann, Hopkinton, Elsie (Bill) Ries, Cascade and Alice (Robert) Kirpes, Dubuque and a sister-in-law, Rita Wilgenbusch, Monticello. Viola was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; an infant daughter on July 7, 1951; her parents, two sisters, Mabel Guthrie and Ethel Kenny, and two brothers, John and Thomas Wilgenbusch.

Carlus Elmer Herman Schuety, 77, of Elkader, died Tuesday evening, February 8, 2005, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester, following a brief illness. He was born icon December 10, 1927, in Boardman Township to Fred and Alice (Lahrs) Schuety. He attended Clayton Co. rural schools. Carlus served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict from December 3, 1952, until he was honorably discharged on December 2, 1954. He was united in marriage to Belva Hesner on October 25, 1955, in Strawberry Point. Two daughters were born icon to this union. From 1964 to 1988 they made their home northwest of Elkader, where Carlus farmed. They retired in 1988 and moved into Elkader. Carlus had served on the ASCS Committee, and at the time of his death, was a Boardman Township Trustee and a board member of the East Side Cemetery Assoc. Carlus was a very social person; he loved to drive the countryside and visit with people. He enjoyed playing cards, listening to country music and spending time with his family, especially his granddaughter, Elisha. Survivors include his wife, Belva Schuety, Elkader; his daughter, Twyla (Kenneth) Walz, Elkader; his granddaughter, Elisha Ihde and her friend, Brett Johnson, La Crosse, WI; two brothers, Richard Schuety, Chariton and Larry Schuety, Aurora; two sisters, Ruth (Dick) Witte, Alexandria, VA and Betty Boots, Elkader and four nieces, Dawn (Mike) Anzallo, Maryland, Lynn Witte and her friend Steve Miller, Maryland, Toni (Dan) Moser, Escondido, CA and Sue (Doug) Larson, Elkader. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Sarah Schuety, a granddaughter, LaTonya Walz, a brother, Fred Schuety Jr. and a sister, Roma Schuety.

Clair G. Carpenter, 87, of Manchester, formerly of Earlville was born icon October 19, 1917, at Almoral Iowa, to Reuben and Loretta (Gibbs) Carpenter. He attended Almoral rural schools. He was united in marriage to Berneice Cocking on January 1, 1938, in rural Manchester. Two daughters and one son were born icon to this union. They made their home north of Earlville where Clair farmed for many years. He retired in 1979, at which time they moved to Manchester. He has been a resident of the Good Neighbor Home since October of 2004. Clair loved working with cattle and horses. He was a past member of the Delaware Co. Cattleman’s Assoc. He enjoyed traveling, spending time with his grandchildren and other family and friends. He passed away at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester on Sunday, February 06, 2005, following a brief illness. Survivors include his wife, Berneice Carpenter, Manchester; two daughters, Delores Ann (Don) Marsh, Salt Lake City, Utah and Karon (Willis) Dettmann, Central City; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two sisters, Lois Peterson, Texas and Bernadine (Harold) Nieman, Delhi. Clair was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Richard Lee in 1957 and a sister, Faye Morton.

Marcella Elvera Steffen, 79, of Manchester, died Saturday, February 5, 2005, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, following a brief illness. She was born icon April 2, 1925, in Luxemburg, Iowa to Clem and Grace (Thillen) Singsank. She attended rural and Catholic schools in Luxemburg. She was united in marriage to Harold Steffen on June 10, 1946, in Luxemburg. Eight children were born icon to this union. They made their home south of Ryan where they farmed from 1946 to 1992. At this time they retired and moved into Manchester. Marcella was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ryan, and presently of St. Mary’s in Manchester. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #692. She enjoyed fishing, playing cards, quilting, gardening and spending time with her family. Survivors include her husband, Harold Steffen, Manchester; seven children, Carl (Marilee) Steffen, and Marilyn (Phil) Zieser, both of Ryan, Marcia Gager, Walker, Dan (Barb) Steffen, Farley, Mary (Steve) Sweet, West Concord, MN, Margie (Bruce) Schneider, and Greg (Mary) Steffen, both Manchester; twenty-seven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; three brothers, Gilbert (Mert) Singsank, Dyersville, Irvin (Virgie) Singsank, Luxemburg and Gerry (Helen) Singsank, Luxemburg and three sisters, Delores Hirtz, Cascade, Mae (Alphonse) Pasker, Manchester and Eileen (Alver) Dingbaum, Dyersville. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Gary in 2003, son-in-law, Rolly Gager and a brother, Clarence Singsank.

Joyce Mabel (Fette) Muller, 68, Monona, died Monday, October 31, 2005, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, Guttenberg following a brief illness. She was born icon on August 25, 1937, at the family home near St. Olaf, to Albert and Rosina (Glawe) Fette. Joyce was baptized September 26, 1937, at the Frieden's Evangelical Church (Peace UCC) Elkader and was confirmed July 1, 1951, at Norway Lutheran Church. She attended St. Olaf School during her elementary years then transferred to Elkader High School, where she graduated in 1955. She was united in marriage to John H. Muller on April 21, 1958, at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg. Four children were born icon into this union. John and Joyce farmed south of Luana for thirty years, and then moved to their home in Monona. Joyce worked for Monona Wire for ten years. She loved spending time with her family and friends, especially attending her grandchildren's activities. Joyce also collected teddy bears and cows. Survivors include her husband, John, Monona; her four children, Tammy Muller, Monona, Randy Muller, Monona, Rick (Deb) Muller, Fayette, and Terene (Kurt) Hauschild, Monona; five grandchildren, Tara, Trista and James Muller, Tasha and Kayla Hauschild, three step-grandchildren, Jason Niles, Travis Niles and Kaleena Bettneng; one step-great-grandchild, Hunter Niles; her sister Eileen Peterson, Garnavillo; three brothers, Virgil (Dolores) Fette, St. Olaf, Ronald (Peggy) Fette, New London, WI, Richard (Dianne) Fette, Elkader. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents.

Francis Ward "Gabby" Arthur, 90, Edgewood, died Thursday, October 27, 2005, at the Edgewood Convalescent Center, Edgewood following a brief illness. He was born icon in Edgewood on July 24, 1915, to Alfred John and Nellie Vera (White) Arthur. He graduated from the Edgewood High School. Francis served in the United States Army during WWII, serving as an airplane mechanic in England with the 351st Bomb Group. On July 24, 1946, Gabby was united in marriage to Lorna Mae Burrack at Saint's Peter & Paul Lutheran Church, Castle Grove, IA. Five children were born icon to this union. Gabby was a rural mail carrier for twenty five years and worked at Stone's Hardware for many years. He loved spending time with his family and friends, fishing, watching baseball, especially the Twins and Cubs and volunteering for the Boy Scouts. Survivors include his wife, Lorna Arthur, Edgewood; his children, Mary (James) Petersen, Reinbeck, Nancy Ketring, Greenville, OH, Roger (Ronna) Arthur, Edgewood, and Annette (Robert) Watermiller, Marion; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and two sisters-in-law, Marion Arthur, Edgewood and Helen Arthur, Edgewood. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Sheryll Arthur, three sisters, five brothers and a son-in-law Gerald Ketring.

Oliver C. Doerring, 79, Monona, Iowa, died Thursday, October 27, 2005, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital, Prairie du Chien, WI, following a sudden illness. Oliver was born icon on December 1, 1925, in rural Luana, IA, to Arno and Bernadine (Brandtman) Doerring. He was baptized on December 20, 1925, and confirmed on April 2, 1939, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. He attended Luana Public School through the eighth grade. Oliver was married to Rose Marie Ruckdaschel at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, on April 3, 1955. Two daughters were born icon to this union. Oliver farmed with his wife Rose Marie for thirty-two years and then retired to live in Monona. He worked for Swiss Valley for a number of years, worked part-time at Monona Wire and put out the school stop signs for the City of Monona for many years. He enjoyed cracking nuts and making rugs in his spare time. Oliver loved spending time with his family and friends, especially all of his grandchildren and great-grandson. Survivors include his wife, Rose Marie Doerring, Monona; two daughters, Marsha (Kenneth) Conway, Stillwater, OK, Marilyn (Michael) Rood, Monona; five grandchildren, Melissa (Derick) Gilbreath, Stillwater, OK, Mindy Conway, Stillwater, OK, Megan Conway, Stillwater, OK, Christopher (Sandra) Rood, Sumner, Cory Rood, Waterloo; one great-grandson, Charlie Edward Gilbreath, Stillwater, OK; three sisters, Maxine Morch, Postville, Eunice (Myrl Dean) Dickman, Postville, Inez (Dwayne) Moon, Luana and two brothers, Roland (Marlene) Doerring, Garnavillo and James (Elaine) Doerring, McGregor.
