Elmer C. Knockel, 79, Monona, died Tuesday, October 11, 2005, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital, Prairie du Chien, WI, following a brief illness. He was born icon January 19, 1926, in LaMotte, IA to Joseph and Elizabeth (Smith) Knockel. Elmer graduated from St. Mary Catholic High School, Cascade, and attended Loras College in Dubuque for one year. He was drafted after he graduated from high school and served during WWII in the U.S. Navy along with four other brothers who served in the Army. Elmer was united in marriage to Helen Cunningham on May 8, 1948, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Cascade. Ten children were born icon to this union. After the war, Elmer worked at Knockel Hardware Store in Cascade for his brother Howard. The family moved to the Monona area, where they farmed north of Monona for many years. Survivors include his wife, Helen Knockel, Monona; nine children, Perry (Barb) Knockel, Albuquerque, NM, Gary Knockel, Kilgore, NE, Sherry (Greg) Krogman, Maquoketa, Terry (Christopher) Hardy, Rapids City, IL, Larry (fiancé, Vicki Frazier) Knockel, Monona, daughter-in-law, Linda Knockel, Monona, Kerry (Brenda) Knockel, Centerville, MN, Mary (Rayne) Krambeer, Decorah, Elmer (Karla) Knockel, Rochester, MN, Paul (Jean) Knockel, Ft. Dodge; three brothers, Joseph Knockel, Dubuque, Howard (Evelyn) Knockel, Cascade, Walter (Celine) Knockel, Dubuque; four sisters, Irene Carnahan, Cascade, Leona Gordon, Dubuque, Marie (Albert) Giegerich, Dubuque and Rita (William) Kauder, Cascade; twenty six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, his son Jerry Knockel and his brother Leo Knockel.

Verna Meyer, 80, died Sunday, October 9, 2005, at Maple Crest Manor, Fayette, following a brief illness. Verna Mae (Groth) Meyer was born icon December 6, 1924, in Pleasant Valley Township near Elgin, IA, to Selmer and Ruth (Kirkeberg) Groth. She was baptized in May of 1925. In May of 1939, she was confirmed at Glenwood Lutheran Church near Decorah, IA. Verna graduated from Elgin High School in 1943. In 1945, she entered the Lutheran Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, Chicago, IL as a Cadet Nurse. She graduated in 1948, as a registered nurse and continued working there until March 30, 1950. On April 23, 1950, she was united in marriage to Elmer Louis Meyer. Two sons were born icon to this union, David and James. Verna and Elmer made their home near Elgin for most of their married life. Verna worked in nursing at Palmer Memorial Hospital in West Union and as school nurse at Valley High School. She was a member of the Progress Study Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, a charter member of Elgin Lutheran Church and the Women's Mission Federation of Elgin Lutheran Church. Her hobbies included reading and crocheting. In July of 2002, Verna moved to Maple Crest Manor, Fayette, and resided there until her death on Sunday, October 9, 2005. She was preceded in death by her parents: her husband, Elmer; a son, David; a grandson, Brad; and her sister Geneva Ardis (Groth) McMillan. Verna is survived by her son James and Wife Cheryl of Elgin; grandchildren, David Meyer and wife Tina of New Vienna, IA; Jamie Alden and husband Nick of Cedar Rapids, IA; great-grandchildren, Haley, Victor and Valery Meyer of New Vienna, IA; a sister-in-law, Hilda Wolf of Clermont, IA; a brother-in-law, Hank McMillan of Elgin; nephew, Mark McMillan and wife Robin of Corona del Mar, California; other special nieces and nephews, family members and friends. Verna will be remembered always and kept in the hearts of those who loved her.

Faye "Boppy" Whittenbaugh Whittenbaugh

Faye "Boppy" Whittenbaugh, 91, (lovingly known as "Boppy" to his family) of Wilton, formerly of Wadena, died Sunday, October 9, 2005, at Unity Hospital, Muscatine, IA, following a brief illness. He was born icon June 9, 1914, in Lansing, IA, to William and Mae (Davis) Whittenbaugh. He graduated from Wadena High School in 1931. He married Ella Nora Patterson on December 27, 1937. They farmed in rural Wadena for over sixty years. Faye was also a part time carpenter and did custom hay baling. He was a member of the Wadena School Board for eight years, serving as its president, and also as a member of the reorganization committee. Faye was a member of the Iowa Farm Bureau. He has been a long time member of Wadena Presbyterian Church. Faye loved nature and animals, especially his many dogs. He loved children and had a special way with them. Survivors include his wife, Ella Nora of Wilton, IA; a son, Terry (Connie) Whittenbaugh of McGregor, IA; a daughter, Connie (Rev. Tom) Zeleny of Wilton; two grandchildren, Amy (Tony) Salemi of McHenry, IL, Chad Zeleny of Mt. Pleasant, IA; four great-grandchildren Joseph and Christopher Salemi, McHenry, IL, Derek and Samantha Zeleny, Mt. Pleasant, IA; one sister, Mary Krivanek, Redding, CA; cousins, nieces and nephews. His parents, brothers Clair, Milo, Francis, Gayle and sisters, LaZaida, Cleo, LaVerle, Marge and Nellie preceded him in death.

Ettagene Irene was born icon on April 15, 1927, near Delhi to Harold and Vida (Milroy) Wilson. She was raised and educated in Delhi where she graduated from High School. She worked as a telephone operator in Manchester until her marriage to Harold Petlon on October 8, 1950 in Delhi. Together they farmed west of Delhi. In 1987, they retired to Delhi. The past year Ettagene was living at the Gernand Retirement Center in Strawberry Point. Ettagene passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2005, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness. It was Ettagene’s and Harold’s 55th Wedding anniversary. She was seventy-eight years of age. Survivors include her husband, Harold; three daughters, Linda Galligan of Aurora, Colorado, Sandra (Dennis) Ahrens of Dundee, and Gail (Bob) Stoltz of Aurora, Illinois; six grandchildren; two brothers, Mahlon (Mary) Wilson and Wayne (Janet) Wilson both of Delhi; two sisters, Zona (Russell) McPhail of Waterloo, and Velma (Harry) Swanson of Manchester. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Vida Wilson.

Ettagene was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and was a past Sunday School teacher. She also was a Legion Auxilliary member, a 4-H leader, and loved quilting, square dancing, gardening and baking.

Harvey K. "Kenny" Parker

Harvey K. “Kenny” Parker, 77 of Delhi, died Monday, October 3, 2005, at his home following a sudden illness. He was born icon August 25, 1928, in St. Louis, MO, to Harvey and Clara (Kobusch) Parker. He graduated from high school in Cedar Rapids. Harvey was united in marriage to Helen Zbanek on June 21, 1951. She died November 13, 1977. He married Virginia Parker on December 5, 1980, in Cedar Rapids. He worked at Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids for forty-two years and retired in August of 1990, to Lake Delhi. He was a past president of the Delhi Lions. Survivors include his wife Virginia Parker, Lake Delhi; his daughter, Debbie (Bill) Humphreys, Lake Delhi; his son, Steve Parker (friend Pam), Ames; step-children, Mike (Mary) Porter, California, Dawn (John) Dorsett, Seattle, WA, Gregg (Lori Yoshinaga) Porter, Seattle, WA; grandchildren, Kelly, Chaz, Cavin, Tara, Sara, Chris and Zach; sisters, Lorene (Carroll) Miskimen, Cedar Rapids and Birdella (Albert) Linkenback, Cedar Rapids; a brother, Forrest (Joanne) Parker, Cedar Rapids, and nieces and nephews. Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife and an infant son.

Harvey served in the US Army from 1950-1952.

Memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous of Iowa.

Elsie D. Cords, 98, Elkader, died Saturday, October 1, 2005, at the Elkader Care Center, Elkader, following a long illness. She was born icon September 13, 1907, in Read Township, Clayton County to August and Lucy (Buckman) Taake. Elsie was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center. She attended Clayton County country school. She was united in marriage to William B. Cords on February 3, 1932, at the Taake family home. They lived in Elkader until 1940, when they moved to Rock Island, IL. In 1945, they moved to Dubuque where they lived until they retired and moved back to Elkader. William passed away on June 4, 1988. When Elsie's health failed in 2001, she entered the Elkader Care Center. She resided there until her death. Elsie loved crocheting, and all needlework, her flowers, garden and traveling. Survivors include her daughter, Lucille Eberhardt, Elkader; four grandchildren, Betty and Terry Wilker, West Salem, WI, Louis and Theresa Eberhardt, Elkader, Becky and Bill Thompson, Marion, John Eberhardt, Elkader; nine great-grandchildren, Colin, Chase, Sophia Wilker, Darci, Kristi, James Eberhardt, Rachel, Kendra, Nolan Thompson and a sister, Loretta Fascher, Elkader Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William, son-in-law LuVern Eberhardt, three brothers, Lester, Waldo and Ervin Taake; brother-in-law, Ewald Fascher and sisters-in-law, Mildred Taake and Alo Taake.

Clarence "Tiny" Charles Thoman, 99, of Elgin, died Sunday, October 2, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Center, West Union. Clarence was born icon August 11, 1906, in Elgin to Timothy and Salome (Frieden) Thoman. At the age of three, the family moved to a farm in Illyria Township where he attended the rural school and graduated from the Elgin High School in 1924. On April 25, 1925, he was baptized by Rev. E.J. Starr and became a member of the Illyria Community Church where he has been a faithful member and served on various boards. After graduating from high school, he farmed with his father. In 1936, he took over the farming operation. He also worked part time for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service for sixteen years, serving as township chairman and first alternate on the country committee. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Fayette County Farm Bureau and Extension Council. On June 22, 1983, he was united in marriage to Dorothy M. Kuhens at the Elgin Lutheran Church by Rev. Duane Berg. He served on the Elgin City Council for years and was a charter member and first president of the Elgin Historical Society. He appreciated his friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, in 1998; one brother, Bert; three sisters, Florence Braker, Nellie Wilson and Alta Thoman; one nephew, Darol Wilson. Survived by niece, Geraldine Wilson, Elgin; great nephew, Hal (Marty Berda) Wilson, Elgin; great niece, Ivanelle (David) Hagedorn, Waterloo; great-great nephew, Chris Wilson, Elgin; great-great nieces, Jenny Hanson Chicago, IL and Kari Hanson, Minneapolis, MN; three step-sons, Culver (Sandy) Kuhens, Muscatine, Revs. Galen (Helen Beth) Kuhens, Harpers Ferry, Denis (Cindy) Kuhens, Harper's Ferry and their families.

Ian Thomas Galloway was born icon on May 14, 1982, in Manchester, Iowa, to Glen and Mindy (Hora) Galloway. He received his education and graduated from West Delaware Community School in 2000. He was employed by Henderson Manufacturing in Manchester. Ian enjoyed motorcycles, hunting, fishing, golf, and camping. He recently was accepted as a Knights of Pythian member. Ian died as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident Friday evening, September 30, 2005, near Worthington. He was twenty-three years of age. Ian is survived by his parents, Glen and Mindy Galloway of Manchester; one brother, Jake Galloway of Manchester; his maternal grandfather, Darrell Hora of Dundee; his maternal grandmother, Janice and husband William Hotle of Central City; and a special friend, Debbie Moser of Guttenberg. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Gary and Pat Galloway.
