Carla N. Kessler, 73, Elkader, died Thursday, September 29, 2005, at her home following a long illness. She was born icon February 20, 1932 to Newell and Mary "Babe" (Oehring) Kramer in rural Clayton County. She graduated from St. Joseph's High School, Elkader and also attended nursing school at Calmar. Carla was an administrator at Scenic Acres for many years. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Elkader. Carla enjoyed spending time with her family, friends and her flower garden. On January 15, 1953, Carla was united in marriage to James R. Kessler. Five children were born icon to this union. Survivors include her sons, Keith and Kris Kessler, Elkader, Jerry Kessler, Garnavillo and friend Lori Pope, a daughter, Linda (Terry) Farmer, Prairie du Chien, WI; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters Dione (William) Shadid, Cedar Rapids, Mary Jane (Oscar) Barns, Cedar Rapids and Suzanne Miller, Elkader. Carla was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James on July 12, 2000, her son James Newell Kessler and two sisters, Karen Nemer and Helen Kramer in infancy.

Ruth Elizabeth was born icon on October 12, 1911. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Leatherman. She received her education and graduated from Winthrop High School. Ruth was united in marriage to James Gerald Smith on May 19, 1933. They lived in Waterloo until they retired to Orlando, Florida. James died in May, 1979, and Ruth moved to Manchester to be close to family. Ruth was interested in her family and they were her biggest joy. She passed away at her home on Thursday, September 29, 2005. She was ninety-three years of age. Ruth is survived by her daughter, Marlene “Marty” Harper and husband, David of Manchester; two grandchildren, Jeff Harper and his wife Carol; and Laura O’Leary and husband, Joe; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James; her parents Mr. & Mrs. W.A. Leatherman and one sister, Evelyn Leatherman.

The family prefers memorials rather than flowers.

Francis John Atkinson, 88, of Edgewood, died Tuesday September 27, 2005, at Regional Hospital, Rapid City, South Dakota, following a brief illness. He was born icon October 14, 1916, in Dundee, IA to Roy and Agnes (Burns) Atkinson. He graduated from Lamont High School in 1935. He was united in marriage to Velma Eggiman on March 31, 1939, in Monticello, IA. Francis farmed his entire life. They moved to a farm north of Edgewood in 1949 and remained there until they moved into Edgewood in 1985. He also worked in sales and management for many years with the Archer Oil Co. He was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and he enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing cards. Survivors include his wife, Velma Atkinson, Edgewood; his two sons, Jack Atkinson, Edgewood and David (Beverly) Atkinson, Edgewood; his daughter Joan Atkinson, Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren, Brian (Melissa) Atkinson, Center Point, Kevin (Dawn) Atkinson, Shellsburg, Craig (Kari) Atkinson, Central City, John (Terri) Atkinson, Nora Springs, Cheryl Lightfoot, Strawberry Point, Lisa (Chad) Barnhart, Colesburg, Karen (Jack) Buteria, Hiawatha, Daryl Atkinson, Center Point and Melissa (Richard) Matti, Garnavillo; thirteen great-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald "Dutch" (Marilyn) Atkinson, Ryan, Roy Atkinson, Delhi and one sister, Lois Connor, Dallas, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Damian, and five sisters, Edith Washburn, Alice Davis, Florence Sharp, Ruth Whitman and Mabel Reiger.

Helen Vivian Jarms, 93, Monona, IA, died Saturday, September 24, 2005, at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, WI, following a short illness. She was born icon June 15, 1912, in St. Olaf to Anton and Marie (Kristofferson) Jacobson. Helen was baptized July 14, 1913, and confirmed August 7, 1927, both at Norway Lutheran Church, rural, St. Olaf, IA. Helen attended country schools through the eighth grade, then transferred to and graduated from Elkader High School in 1930. She taught country school for two years in rural Clayton County. On March 5, 1932, she was united in marriage to Harold Jarms at Galena, IL. Five children were born icon to this union. Helen had been a resident at Postville Good Samaritan Center for the past six months. Survivors include four children, Marlys Frye, Poway, CA, Joanne (Harold) Vorwald, Monona, Don (Mary Lou) Jarms, Tucson, AZ, Betty (Robert) Kiesau, Monona; fifteen grandchildren; thirty nine great grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren ;one brother, Robert Jacobson, Monona; a sister-in-law, Vera Wirkler, Postville; two cousins, Aileen Rathwell, Victoria, B.C. and Bill Pipes, Guelph, Ontario; several nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on August 5, 1974; son, William Jarms; son-in-law, Robert Frye; grandson, Randy Frye; three sisters, Gladys Zenisek, Sally Landt and Ruth Timmerman; two brothers, Oscar Jacobson and Rolf Jacobson; six brothers-in-law, Harvey Jarms, Giles Blietz, Joe Geraghty, Stan Zenisek, Ray Humpfer, Willis Timmerman and four sisters-in-law, Shirley Jacobson, Marguerite Geraghty, Dorothy Blietz and Marie Jarms.

Paul Layton Johnson, 77, Prairie du Chien, WI, formerly of Elkader, died Friday, September 23, 2005, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital, Prairie du Chien, WI, following a long illness. He was born icon August 16, 1928, in Chippewa Falls, WI, to Albert and Loretta (Rooney) Johnson. On June 1, 1951, Paul married Betty Pust in Littleport, Iowa. He proudly served in the Korean War. He attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, IA for his undergraduate degree, and later attended University of Iowa. Paul taught High School English for many years in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. He achieved national recognition as a Debate coach. His passion for debate extended into retirement where he volunteered his services at the public High School in his boyhood town of Chippewa Falls. Paul was proud to have started the Alumni Hall of Fame at Central High School in Elkader. He touched the lives of hundreds of students, many of whom kept in contact with him over the years. He was a Past Commander of the American Legion Post #77 in Chippewa Falls, WI. He was also a member of the American Legion Post in Elkader, IA. Paul’s greatest pleasure was spending time with his Best Friend, wife Betty. He was a devoted family man spending many weekends with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who lovingly referred to him as “Old Papa”. He especially enjoyed his time spent with his twin daughters showing Arabian horses. He spent his retirement years entertaining family and friends at their log cabin on Lake Wissota in Chippewa Falls. Taking boat trips to Mallard Resort on the Chippewa River will be a special memory for all of the grandchildren. In more recent years he enjoyed spending time in his backyard garden filled with flowers and song birds. Survived by his wife Betty, children Paula (Lee) Embretson of Farmersburg, IA, Mark Johnson of Prairie du Chien, WI, Steven (Lynn) Johnson of Onalaska, WI and Pamela (Dennis) Freitag of Elkader, IA; grandchildren Joshua (Stacey) Embretson of Cedar Rapids, IA, Timothy Embretson of Cedar Falls, IA, Stephanie Embretson of Cedar Rapids, IA, Chris Guillan of New York, NY, Danielle (Dustin) Vajgrt of Eau Claire, WI, Chad Johnson of Menomonie, WI, Jennifer (Matthew) Grant of Holmen, WI, Juston Johnson of Minneapolis, MN, Ann (T.J.) Clara Ann Neuhaus, 78, of Monona died Friday, September 16, 2005, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader, following a sudden illness. She was born icon on February 1, 1927, the daughter of Louis and Clara (Harter) Berns. She was raised on the family farm near Garnavillo, and received her education at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Garnavillo. Clara was united in marriage to Alvin Neuhaus at Garnavillo on June 7, 1949. After farming near Garnavillo for several years, they moved to a farm north of Farmersburg where they farmed until 1989. At that time they moved to their new home in Monona, where Clara has lived until the time of her death. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and St. Patrick’s Rosary Society for many years. Her first and foremost interest was that of her family. She truly enjoyed being with all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Playing games and cards, along with cooking and taking care of her flowers were enjoyable times for her. Surviving Clara are her nine children, Betty (Loren) Gottschalk of Walker, Jean (Tom) Farrell of Prairie du Chien, WI, Tom (Sheila) Neuhaus of Monona, Ann (Kim) Fields of Grafton, WI, Paul Neuhaus (Billie Knepper) of Pittsburgh, PA, Jerry (Deb) Neuhaus of Monona, Virginette (Steve) Connor of DeWitt, Mary (Mike) Jaynes of Prairie du Chien, WI and Al (Jody) Neuhaus of Hiawatha; twenty-six grandchildren and step-grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Louis Berns of Monona and Aloys (Rosie) Berns of Garnavillo; three sisters, Laura Sudmeier of New Vienna, Mary Lou Krapfl of New Vienna and Helene Sudmeier of Dubuque; four sisters-in-law, Germaine Foxen of Luxemburg, Delores Neuhaus of New Vienna, Vera Moorman of Petersburg and Betty Berns of Prairie du Chien, WI; along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Clara was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alvin Neuhaus, infant daughter, Teresa Marie Neuhaus, son-in-law, Larry Ihde, brothers, Peter Berns Sr. and Roland Berns; a sister, Claudine McLane; sisters-in-law, Virginia Berns, Lorraine Berns, Marie Berns and Wilma Berns and brothers-in-law, Roger Krapfl, Jim Sudmeier, George Sudmeier, Herbert Goedken, Loraine McLane, Bernard Neuhaus, William Moorman and Emmett Foxen. Due to construction at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, September 20, 2005, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona.

Florence Louise Senner Evans, 96, a long-time Monona resident, died September 14, 2005, at Hillview Healthcare Center, LaCrosse, WI, following a short illness. Florence was born icon in Hawkeye, IA, on January 12, 1909, the daughter of Carl L. and Anna (Boes) Senner. She was baptized as an infant and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hawkeye, in 1923. She graduated from Hawkeye High School in 1926 and from Upper Iowa University in 1931. Her baccalaureate degree included two academic diplomas, one in Public School Music and another in Piano Performance, with a minor in English. She taught in various Iowa schools for twenty-seven years, the last twenty-four of which were in the MFL School District. Florence retired from public school teaching in 1976. She also enjoyed teaching private piano lessons at her home to hundreds of students during her lifetime and felt privileged to be a part of their musical development. While at Upper Iowa University she met Robert Lincoln Evans whom she married in 1933. They lived in Fredericksburg, Luana and Postville, Iowa, and in 1950 they purchased the Pape and Fox Hardware Store in Monona which ultimately became the Evans Hardware Hank Store. Florence was an active partner in the hardware business with Robert, handling the bookkeeping responsibilities. In 1958 she began another musical commitment as an organist at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona, where she had been a member for many years. In 1993, at the age of eighty-four, she was honored by the church for her musical contributions with a celebration of her thirty-five years of service. She was a member of the Northern Clayton County Garden Club, and Retired Teachers' Association. She is survived by her two daughters, Karan (Trygve) Mathison, Holmen, WI, Gloria (Brian) Rainer, Champaign, IL; one granddaughter, Sarah Mathison, Onalaska, WI; one great-granddaughter, Annika Mathison, Elk River, MN; one granddaughter-in-law, Angela Mathison, Elk River, MN; one sister-in-law, Connie Senner, West Union; one niece, Ann Senner, Nashua; two nephews, Rodney (Kathy) Senner, West Union and Kevin Senner, Rochester, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; her brother, Richard Senner and a grandson, Brent Mathison. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or a Music Scholarship that will be funded under Dollars for Scholars or as donors choose.

Erna was born icon February 24, 1912, at Jubilee, Black Hawk County, Iowa to Wilhelm and Katharina (Defries) Adix. Erna was raised and educated in the area, attending her first two years of high school locally. Her second two years of high school were completed at Wartburg Academy in Waverly. Two years of college followed at Wartburg Junior College in Waverly. In 1932, Erna taught rural school near Farmersburg before attending Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for one year. After teaching in Greeley four years, she taught first grade in Manchester from 1940 until 1959. In 1957, Erna graduated from Wartburg College. Erna took a leave of absence from teaching to care for her mother in 1959. She resumed teaching third grade in Manchester from 1963 until retirement in 1974. At retirement she received a poster from her students, saying, "To the best teacher in the whole world---Miss Adix.” A longtime member of First Lutheran Church in Manchester, Erna was a past president of NE Iowa Group Luther League and of the International Women’s Missionary Federation. Erna taught Sunday School, Bible School, was the junior choir director and organist. She helped organize the Woman Alone group, and regularly wrote a “Did you Know” column for the church newsletter, The Lamplighter. Erna died Tuesday, September 13, 2005, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. She was ninety-three years of age, and had resided at the Good Neighbor Home for the past year. Family was an important part of Erna’s life as she actively participated in their many activities. She is remembered with love by her seven nieces and nephews, cousins, extended families, and 99 yr old sister-in-law, Agnes Adix. Erna was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, William A. and Herold M. Adix. Memorial are preferred to flowers.
