Roselyn Amanda Liddy, Littleport, died Friday, May 13, 2005, at the Elkader Care Center following a long illness. She was born icon November 2, 1912, in Read Township, Clayton County, to George and Caroline (Ihde) Kurdelmeyer. She attended country school through the eighth grade. On December 25, 1939, she was united in marriage to Donald F. Liddy at Elkader. Together they owned and operated Liddy’s General Store in Littleport, where she was also the postmistress for many years before the post office closed. Roselyn was a longtime member of Hope Lutheran Church. Survivors include many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1972; sisters, Charlotte Whittle, and Cora Wagner and brothers, Bill Kurdelmeyer and Arno Kurdelmeyer.

LuVerne Jerome Barth, 67, Monona died Friday, May 13, 2005, at the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown, following a long illness. He was born icon May 11, 1938, in Winneshiek County, to Dale and Janet (Barth) Ashline. He graduated from Monona High School. Following high school, LuVerne entered the military, serving in the U.S. Navy for two years. Following his time in service, due to ill health, LuVerne spent the remainder of his life in residential care. Survivors include his two sisters, Joneita (Bob) Wagner, Monona, Marian (Floyd) Buhr, Farmers Branch, TX; one brother, Clifford (Karen) Higgins, Cedar Rapids and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Robert 'Bob' L. Cousins, 70, Elgin, died Friday, May 13, 2005, at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, of complications from surgery. He was born icon January 14, 1935, in Arlington to Arthur and Thelma (Phillips) Cousins. He attended the Wadena schools. Bob was united in marriage to Nora Rainey on June 5, 1955 at Illyria. Five children were born icon to this union. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, friends and golfing. Survivors include his wife, Nora, Elgin; son, Michael (Linda), Madisonville, TX; three daughters, Bobbie (Tim) Hickman, Jesup, Thelma (Bob) Bjorklund, Lake Mills, Sam (Randy) Kauffman, Jesup; eight grandchildren, Ty, Melissa, Ryan, Seth, Kayla, Matthew, Courtney and Brandon; his mother, Thelma Cousins, Evansdale; one brother, Dave (Wanda) Evansdale and one sister, Mary Soukup, Central City. Other survivors include Sarah, Cedar Rapids and Karen, Evansdale who spent a lot of time at their home and became an important part of their life. Bob was preceded in death by his father, Art Cousins; son, little Robert; three brothers, Arthur (Frank), Delmar (Don) and Carl. A memorial fund has been established.

Nina I. Refle, 100, of Littleport, died Friday morning, March 31, 2006, at the Elkader Care Center, following a brief illness. She was born icon November 16, 1905, in rural Edgewood to Charles and Eleanor (Smith) Bassett. She graduated from Edgewood High School. She was united in marriage to William Refle at Edgewood in 1933. Throughout their married life they farmed and made their home in the Littleport area. Nina was very active in her church as well as numerous organizations in the area. Survivors include her children, Dean (Sandy) Refle of Elkport and Cleo England of Iowa Falls; seven grandchildren, Keith England, Scott England, Terry England, David England, Laurie Harris, Annette Hayes and Jan Refle and nine great-grandchildren, John England, Naomi England, Sarah England, Spencer Harris, Lucas Harris, Colton England, Elisha Refle, Mackenzie Hayes and Rylee Hayes. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister, Clara Miller, two brothers, Herman and Ted Bassett and a son-in-law, Robert England.

Lillie Rosella Trudo, 98, Luana, Iowa, died Sunday, March 26, 2007, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader, Iowa, following a sudden illness. Lillie was born icon on December 26, 1907 in rural St. Olaf, Iowa, to Ole and Margaret (Baumeister) Olson. She attended Monlux Country School through the eighth grade. Lillie was united in marriage to Vern Trudo in 1927. Three children were born icon to this union. Lillie and Vern farmed their entire married life in the St. Olaf area. She was a member of Norway Lutheran Church and was active in their various women’s groups. Lillie enjoyed cooking, gardening, quilting and spending time with her family. Survivors include three children, Betty McMahon, Elkader, Lavonne (Mervil) Mabb, Postville, LaVern Trudo, Luana; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, in March of 1968; several brothers and sisters and one great-grandson, Christopher Scarff.

Esther Lena Mary Zwanziger was born icon February 20, 1920, in the farm home at St. Sebald, IA, northwest of Strawberry Point. She was the daughter of Carl G. Zwanziger and Ida A. Schmidt Zwanziger. Esther was baptized and confirmed at St. Sebald Lutheran Church. She attended area schools and graduated from Strawberry Point High School. She attended one year at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, graduating as a 1939 Commercial Graduate. Esther married Herbert J. Andreae at St. Sebald Lutheran Church, on June 19, 1941. Three children were born icon to their union: David, Nancy, and Jane. Esther was a farm wife and mother. At various times, she did full-time secretarial work for the Volga Public School at Volga, Busse and Beneke Farm Managers of Strawberry Point, and Terra Fertilizer at Strawberry Point. She was very active in 4-H youth work, and in St. Sebald Church organizations. She found time for cross word puzzles, needle work, crafts, growing flowers, bird watching, and her chickens. After retirement, Esther and Herbert remained on the Andreae farm for a number of years, finally moving into Volga in 1993. In 2003, they moved into the newly constructed Kingston Court Assisted Living Apartments in Elkader. Esther had battled osteoporosis for a number of years. Following an enjoyable 86th birthday party with her family on March 4, 2006, her health rapidly deteriorated, and she spent a brief time in the Elkader Care Center, the Central Community Hospital, and finally under Hospice Care. She peacefully passed from this life on Friday, March 24, 2006, at the age of 86 years, 1 month, and 5 days. Esther is survived by her husband Herbert of Elkader, Iowa; her children Rev. David Andreae of Decorah, Nancy & Gary Klingman of Strawberry Point, and Jane & Rev. Jerome Godson of Elgin; her grandchildren, Mace & Kristin Klingman of Strawberry Point, Matt & Sabine Klingman of Elkader, Heather & Ted Schuler of Humboldt, NE, Dr. Jody & Shawn Harmsen of Hayward, WI, Jennifer & Dr. Dan Zomchek of La Grange, IL, A.J. & Andrea Godson of Red Wood City, CA and Paul & Bridget Godson of Ft. Lewis, WA; as well as eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Rev. Otto & Liz Zwanziger of Cedar Rapids. Esther was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Hilda Zwanziger, and four brothers, Walter, Raymond, Alwin, and Ernest Zwanziger.

Vaneta Violet Baker, 92, of Edgewood, died Wednesday night, March 22, 2006, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home, following a brief illness. She was born icon February 20, 1914, near Strawberry Point to John “Dell” and Amy (Hindal) Carpenter. She grew up on the farm and attended rural schools in the area, graduating from Strawberry Point High School with the class of 1931. She was united in marriage to Eli W. Baker on June 14, 1933, in Decorah. Two sons were born icon to this union. They spent several winters in Chandler, AZ. In October of 1989, Vaneta and Eli moved to an apartment in Central City to be near their son Keith and his wife Rhonda. After Eli’s death, Vaneta remained in Central City where she enjoyed her friends and neighbors. Vaneta was a long time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Edgewood. Survivors include her two sons, Keith Baker and his wife Rhonda of Central City and Kent Baker and his wife Marcia of Branson, MO; two sisters, Velma Chettinger of Deming, NM and Jeanne Butterfield and her husband Leo of Casa Grande, AZ and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eli on January 3, 1990; her sister, Irene Fousek and her brother, Leland Carpenter.

James "Jim" Paul Basten

James “Jim” Paul Basten, 82, of Edgewood, died Saturday, March 11, 2006, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, following a brief illness. He was born icon May 13, 1923 in Oelwein to Matthew and Clara (Steffen) Basten. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Oelwein. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Perrinjaquet on May 12, 1944 in Cedar Rapids. Seven children were born icon to this union. Jim spent many years working construction in the area. He loved to fish, hunt, bowl, work in his garden, search word puzzles and spend time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Basten, Edgewood; his children, Janet Lentz, Springville, Bonnie Emerson, Edgewood, Joyce (Nick) Nichols, Lakewood, CO, Lynda (Donald) Mahan, Marion, Kathleen “Katrina” (Roger) Sapp, Central City, Jim Basten, Strawberry Point and Bob Basten, Edgewood; ten grandchildren, John B. Lentz, Jamie Lentz, Heather Emerson, Billi Emerson, Jodi Veach, Michael Basten Nichols, Cory James Mahan, Sean Wood, Krieg Basten and Salina Basten; five great-grandchildren, Niki Tibbott, Keara Emerson, Breanna Veach, Michael Veach and Braylee Veach and three sisters, Jackie (Andy) Bellendier, Maquoketa, Mildred King, Ft. Collins, CO and Dorothy Syverson, Chino, CA. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, John D. Lentz and two brothers and six sisters. Jim’s family would like to thank the ICU and Hospice staff at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics for your kindness and superb care.

Marion W. Arthur

Marion Arthur was born icon Mary Christina Welp on December 19, 1915, in Detroit, Michigan, and passed away on March 8, 2006, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home, Edgewood, Iowa. She was the first of four children of Bernard and Nellie McGrath Welp. She changed her legal name to Marion upon reaching age 18. Marion graduated from Visitation High School in Detroit in 1933. She went on to attend Detroit High School of Commerce for one year, graduating with a secretarial degree. She then worked her way through Providence Hospital School of Nursing to become a Registered Nurse, graduating in 1942 and worked for Cadillac Motors as an industrial nurse. She also went on to attend Wayne University for two years where she studied advertising. In August, 1943, Marion entered the United States Army Air Force as a Second Lieutenant. While in the Army Air Force she was stationed as a nurse at Kearney Station Hospital, Kearney, NE; then trained at Bowman Field, Louisville, KY; and served as an air evacuation nurse in Naples and Siena, Italy. Upon her discharge in September, 1945, she had achieved the rank of First Lieutenant. While in the service she earned the Air Medal and an Oak Leaf Cluster. On February 9, 1944, she married Robert Arthur at the Fort Kearney Air Base. After Robert’s discharge from the service in 1946, Bob and Marion returned to Edgewood. While in Edgewood, Marion continued her nursing career for several years assisting Dr. Lichter. From 1946 to 1986, she assisted Bob while he served as the City Clerk of Edgewood and Secretary of the public school district serving the area. She was a long-time member of Edgewood Woman’s Club and the Edgewood Garden Club and worked on many community activities. She was an active member of St. Marks Catholic Church, serving on many committees there. She and Bob enjoyed traveling for several years, with trips to Hawaii, Alaska, Australia and New Zealand, China, Ireland, Germany and other areas in Europe. Marion is survived by her three children: Susan (Dan) Hummer of Cincinnati, Ohio; Shelley (Keith) McCrory, Davenport; and Steve (Deanne), Dubuque. She is also survived by a brother, Bernard Welp of Jacksonville, Florida, and her sister, Margaret Osip of Dearborn Heights, Michigan; six grandchildren (Tom and Jeff Hummer, Blair and Kyle McCrory, Megan and Mackenzie Arthur); and 14 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, her parents, brother Kenneth Welp, granddaughter Stephanie Hummer, and stillborn grandson McCrory. In keeping with her wishes, Marion’s body has been donated to the University Of Iowa Carver College Of Medicine for purposes of medical research. A memorial Mass to celebrate Marion’s life is being held on Sunday, March 26 at 12:30 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Edgewood. The family will greet friends at the church following the services. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Community Dream fund or the Delaware County Educational Foundation (Robert and Marion Arthur Scholarship Fund) in care of the Community Savings Bank.
