Esther Marie Borgman Smith, 79, of Wadena, died Saturday, March 4, 2006, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, following a brief illness. She was born icon on April 20, 1926, to Eugene William and Louise Minnie (Starke) Borgman on the family farm in Wellington, MO. Her early years were spent growing up on the family farm in Wellington. Her Borgman grandparents shared their home and she was also blessed to live with her Starke grandparents during the school week. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Wellington. She graduated from Wellington High School in 1944 and from Central Missouri State University in 1948. Esther taught home economics for five years in the Fairfield, IA school system and then completed her master’s degree in home economics from Iowa State University in 1954. She was united in marriage to John E. Smith at Collegiate Methodist Church in Ames, on September 18, 1954. During their fifty-one years of marriage, they resided in Arlington, rural Elgin and rural Wadena. Esther worked for the Valley Community School District for several years and was a church organist at the Volga Methodist Church. The joys of Esther’s life were her children and grandchildren. Survivors include her husband John, Wadena; children, Roberta (Alan) Johnson, Ames, grandchildren, Scott and Kristin; daughter-in-law, Jean Smith, St. Paul, grandchildren, Anya and Ian; Mary (Paul) Foxwell, Monona, grandchildren, Monica, Stephanie, Rachel and Lauren; Tom Smith, Slater and Susan (Bruce) Torkelson, Waukon, grandchildren, Erin and Kyle. Her legacy to all of them was a passion for learning and a love of music. Also surviving are a sister, Ruth Akers, DeKalb, IL and a brother, Earl (Mary) Borgman, Wellington, MO; three nieces, one nephew; two great-nieces; one great-nephew; numerous cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son Mark. She will be remembered for her music, her willingness to help others, her beautiful stitchery her phenomenal cooking – particularly pies, and her friendship to everyone she met.

Marguerite (Maggie) Ernst, 89, of Edgewood, died Thursday, March 02, 2006, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home following a brief illness. She was born icon March 12, 1916, to James and Lizzie (Scheffert) Staub in Elkader, IA. Maggie lived in Elkader and attended St. Joseph’s School, Elkader Junior College and later attended Bayless Business School in Dubuque. On February 20, 1941, she was united in marriage to Edwin Ernst. Two sons were born icon to this union. They farmed near Elgin and moved in 1948, to farm near Wood Center, where she remained until she moved to Edgewood in 1993. Throughout her life she was involved in the Altar & Rosary Society at St. Michael’s in Garber. She also enjoyed playing cards, scrabble and an occasional trip to the casino. Her greatest joys were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her children, Jim (Carolyn) Ernst, Cedar Rapids, Jerry (Rosie) Ernst, Edgewood; eight grandchildren, Doug (Kerry) Ernst, Chad Ernst and friend Joni, Joel Ernst, Dustin (Heather) Ernst, Jennifer (Jody) Reinier, Amy Ernst and friend Jeff, Michael (Erika) Ernst, and Kristin Ernst; eleven great-grandchildren and two step great- granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edwin in 1991; a granddaughter and a grandson in infancy; a brother, Melvin and a sister, Dorothy (Dode).

Justin Charles Cahoon, 4, Monona, IA, died Saturday, February 25, 2006, from injuries sustained in a house fire. He was born icon September 17, 2001, in Prairie du Chien, WI, to Nathan and Melanie (Smith) Cahoon. Justin attended Pre-School at MFL-Mar Mac. He loved to play with his brother and sister. Justin liked Spider Man, Sponge Bob Square Pants, puzzles, cars, trucks and trains. Orange was his favorite color. Survivors include his parents, Nathan and Melanie Cahoon, Monona; one sister Cassie Cahoon, Monona; one brother, Jacob Cahoon, Monona; paternal grandparents, Todd & Kathy Cahoon, Monona; maternal grandparents, Dennis & Cindy Smith, Waukon; paternal great grandmother, Barbara Bergeson, Waukon; maternal great-grandparents, Lyla Smith, Waukon and Robert and Helen Maust Jr., New Albin; uncle, Matt Cahoon; aunt, Michelle Cahoon; uncle, Jeremy Smith; many aunts, uncles and cousins. Justin was preceded in death by his paternal great-grandparents, Wilbur and Janie Cahoon, Lee Palmer and Howard Bergeson and maternal great-grandfather, Howard Kenneth Smith.

Harold Sherman Griffith

Harold Sherman Griffith, 93, of Elkader was born icon June 15, 1912, to Harry Llewellyn and Abbie Grannis Griffith at Elkader, Iowa. He died February 22, 2006, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader after a short illness. He graduated from Elkader High School in 1929, Elkader Junior College in 1933, and the State University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Certificate of Journalism in 1936. He was a member of the Sigma Delta Chi professional journalism fraternity at Iowa. Harold met Louise Mather through student activities at the Congregational Church in Iowa City. They were married at Kanawha, Iowa, June 26, 1937, and were devoted to each other for over 68 years. They had three children: John Mather, Robert Paul and Nancy Ruth Kuehl. Harold and Louise raised Louise’s younger sister Patricia Mather Breitsprecher as one of their own children. Harold was baptized and raised in the First Congregational Church, Elkader, where he later served as a deacon and raised his family. Harold and Louise transferred to Peace United Church of Christ when several denominations joined to form the United Church of Christ. At Peace Church he served on the church council and as a Stephen Minister. He was a 50 year member of both the Elkader Masonic Lodge and the Order of Eastern Star. He was a member of the Elkader Rotary Club, policy board of the Northland Housing Board, FEMA board, Keystone Terrace board, the Elkader unit of the Salvation Army and he helped organize and build the Clayton County Food Shelf. He loved the printing plant of the Elkader Register and as a youth spent much of his spare time learning the trade. Upon graduation from the University of Iowa, he returned home as advertising manager of the Register. He assumed management of the business after the death of his father in 1937, and became the third generation Griffith in that capacity. Harold operated the Register for 41 years where he treated his printing as a precision craft and insisted on the absolute integrity of the printed word in the Clayton County Register. He was always pleased when young people he trained pursued careers in the printing and publishing trade. He retired in 1978 when he and Louise sold The Register to their son Robert and his wife Jane. He was preceded in death by his parents, older sisters Helen Katherine and Mary Golden, a twin brother David Grannis and a younger brother Homer Llewellyn. He is survived by his wife Louise, two sons, John and his wife Julie (Stebor) Griffith of St. Charles, IL and Robert and his wife Jane (Paa) Griffith of Elkader and daughter Nancy and her husband Gary Kuehl, Elkader and Pat (Mather) Breitsprecher and her husband Kenny, Farmersburg. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. Typical of his generosity, he stipulated that his body be donated to the University of Iowa Medical School. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 25 at 11:00 a.m. in Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader. Friends may greet the family after 10:00 at the church. A Masonic service will be held in the Elkader Lodge at 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 24 and is open to the public.

Myrtle Mae Schaffer, 81, of Edgewood, died Tuesday, February 21, 2006, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home following a brief illness. She was born icon January 5, 1925, in New Vienna, to Henry and Rose (Roling) Meyer. Myrtle lived in the Earlville, New Vienna and Edgewood area all of her life. On April 28, 1948, she was united in marriage to Leo Schaffer in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Colesburg. Eight children were born icon to this union. She was involved with the rosary society, senior citizens and Wood Center Women’s Club. Myrtle enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, puzzles and making quilts. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include her children, Fred (Kay) Schaffer, Edgewood, Eugene (Rose) Schaffer, Greeley, Jack (Linda) Schaffer, Manchester, Charles (Elle) Schaffer, Yuma, AZ, Bill (Donna) Schaffer, Cedar Rapids, Robert Schaffer, Greeley, Donald (Diane) Schaffer, Ankeny, Darlene (Mark) Jackson, East Dubuque, IL; twenty grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1966 and a sister Ila.

George Everett Stansberry, 67, of Farmersburg, Iowa died Saturday, February 18, 2006, at Great River Care Center in McGregor, Iowa after a brief illness. George was born icon February 22, 1938, in rural Marshalltown, Iowa. He married Linda Kruegger on June 19, 1993, in rural Farmersburg, Iowa. They lived in Farmersburg all of their lives together. George was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He loved working on his stamp collection and enjoyed raising pugs, NASCAR, coins, antiques and spending time with family. As a young man, he did landscaping and worked as a private contractor. George was also a licensed electrician. Surviving is his wife: Linda of Farmersburg; Iowa; his son Jammie (Dawn) Martin of Colesburg; Iowa; five grandchildren: Cody, RJ, Chase, Ryan of Colesburg, Iowa; Mellyssa of Manchester, Iowa; mother-in-law, Elva L. Brincks of McGregor; Iowa; one sister-in-lLaw, Lola Brincks of Farmersburg, Iowa; one nephew: Charles, two nieces, Becky and Nicole of Farmersburg, Iowa and one Godson, Austin of Manchester, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, maternal grandmother, one brother, one sister, and father-in-law: Nick Brincks.

James Francis Wright was born icon October 26, 1938, in National, Iowa to Clifford "Pete" and Lorna (Loetz) Wright. He was raised and educated in the Garnavillo area were he attended St. Joseph's Catholic School. Jim enlisted in the United States Navy after graduating from Garnavillo High School in 1957. On August 22, 1970, Jim was united in marriage to Zelda Fabert at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Garnavillo. Two children were born icon to this union. Jim lived in Akron, Iowa for 12 years where he owned a plumbing and heating business. He moved back to Northeast Iowa and spent his time working on miscellaneous jobs and were he was an active member of the St. Olaf Legion. Jim died at his home in Garnavillo on Friday, February 17, 2006, after a sudden illness. Jim is survived by his wife, Zelda of Garnavillo, two children, Lori (Paul) Keppler of St. Olaf, Dori (Aaron) Meyer of Cresco, one brother, Gerald (Rose) Wright of Prairie du Chien, three grandchildren, Catherine, Michelle, Steven, and his pets, Cindy, Cuddles, and Cassie. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford “Pete” and Lorna Wright of Garnavillo; a brother John “Jack” Wright; and a nephew Mark Wright.

Mildred Lucille Schrampfer, 89, of Volga, died suddenly in her home on Friday, February 10, 2006, of natural causes. She was born icon February 2, 1917, in Bellevue, IA to John and Florence (Mentzel) Schrampfer. Her family later moved to Dubuque. Mildred was an animal lover and cared for many cats and dogs over the years. She was an excellent cook and baker, and much of her life was spent cooking in various nursing homes. She cooked for Father Drexler at the Scared Heart Rectory in Volga. In her later years Mildred enjoyed her house, cooking and her independence. She still maintained her own home in Volga at the age of eighty-nine. Survivors include her sister, Gladys Conboy of Elkader and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Richard who died in 2004.
