Florence B. Warren, 94, of McGregor, died Tuesday, January 31, 2006, at the Great River Care Center following a brief illness. She was born icon one of eight children, to Afton N. and Nettie May (Craighton) Wohlford on September 9, 1911, in Hampton. Florence graduated from Hampton High School. Florence was united in marriage to Dale V. Warren on September 6, 1932. One daughter, Anita, was born icon to this union. They lived in Geneva, where she was employed by Geneva Consolidated School as a cook, as well as a homemaker. Dale & Florence moved to Iowa Falls in 1963, where she was employed at the Pat-A-Cake Bakery until she retired. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, quilting and was an avid reader. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family. Florence moved to McGregor in 2000, and has resided at the Great River Care Center since August, 2004. Survivors include her daughter, Anita (Larry) Cox, McGregor; three grandchildren, Le Cox, Vinton, Karen (Richard) Supper, Norwalk, John (Ruth) Cox, Waukon; two great-grandsons, Thomas and William Supper; two brothers-in-law, Ira Allen, Hampton, Charles Johnson, Loveland, CO and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in December of 1983; five sisters, Vera Warren, Lucile Bailey, Iva Menning, Lulu Allen, Gladys Johnson; two brothers, Kenneth Wohlford and David Wohlford in infancy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Living Faith United Methodist Parish, Monona, the Elkader Public Library, Elkader, the Geneva United Methodist Church, Geneva or the Iowa Falls Public Library..

Winonia E. "Toni" Orth, 93, Clermont, died Friday, January 27, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Center, West Union following a brief illness. She was born icon on March 8, 1912, at Oakland, IA, to Steven and Lilly Mae (Vosler) Reese. She was united in marriage to Harold Orth on March 12, 1931 at Papillion, NE. Six children were born icon to this union. Toni was an excellent seamstress and cook. She enjoyed her activities in the community and church and was a devoted mother and grandmother. Survivors include her six children, Veldon (Mary) Orth, Marshall, MN, Evelyn (John) Finstrom, Villa Park, IL, Doris (Dallas) Brozik, Huntington, WV, Richard (Renee) Orth, Osage, Nancy (Ray) Spratt, Coal Valley, IL, Larry (Ruth) Orth, Waterloo; thirteen grandchildren and twenty six great-grandchildren. Toni was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in May of 1976; five brothers and sisters; two grandchildren, Vincent and Karmel O'Rourke.

Melbert Richard Baechler

The Lord opened His arms and welcomed home His son, Melbert Richard Baechler, 96, who died on Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, following a long illness. Mel was born icon October 9, 1909, to Ernest and Rose (Baumgartner) Baechler on the family farm west of Elgin. He spent his early years farming with his father and then with his brother Alf. Later he drove school bus for the Valley School District and worked with his brother-in-law, Bob Robbins, with his whitewashing business. He was united in marriage to Ruby (Robbins Benson) on August 8, 1959. Mel and Ruby spent time traveling and enjoying seeing most of the United States and a lot of Canada. Most of their winters were spent in the Rio Grande Valley, of Texas. They especially loved their "little home in the valley", where they entertained countless friends and relatives with at least a "cup of coffee and a cookie", probably a game of some sort followed, and Mel always seemed to be the lucky player. Mel is survived by his beloved Ruby; her three children, Verla (Newell) McIntyre, West Union, Thomas B. (MaryLou) Benson, Tripoli and Beverly (Robert) Yancey, Cedar Rapids; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. They all knew him as their "Grandpa Mel". He is also survived by his sisters, Helen Muehlethaler, Stewartville, MN and Clara Whitford, West Union and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Alf of Clermont and John of California and two sisters, Selma Kohls, Elgin and Mary Jennings, Wadena. Our hearts will always feel the loss but all we need is to remember Mel with his beautiful smile, and our hearts will be lighter.

Samuel William Hofer
February 28, 1944 - January 24, 2006

Samuel William Hofer, 61, Wadena, passed away of a sudden illness on January 24, 2006, at the Mission Regional Hospital, Mission, TX. He was born icon February 28, 1944, in Elgin to Ben and Loretta (Imhoff) Hofer. Sam attended Valley High School through the tenth grade. On November 18, 1961, he was united in marriage to Betty Havenstrite in West Union. Three children were born icon to this union. He was a truck driver most of his life, and was currently employed at Cliff Viesman Trucking, out of Gary, South Dakota. Sam enjoyed fishing, woodworking and clowning with the Shriners. His greatest love was to spend time with his family, grandchildren and friends. Survivors include his wife Betty; daughter, Lorretta (Bob) Lerch; son, LeRoy, all of Wadena; seven grandchildren, Chad (JJ) Lerch, Arlington, Jill Aylsworth, Jen (Brian) Stolka, Wadena, Christa Lerch, Cedar Rapids, Cody Lerch and friend, Kirstin Nelson, Joelle Lerch, Wadena and friend, Todd Schmidt, and Robert Hofer, Braidwood, IL; three great-grandchildren, Mariah and Mikayla Aylsworth and Grant Stolka, Wadena; brothers, John (Audrey) Hofer, Randalia, Ben (Betty) Hofer, Central City, Alfred (Iona) Hofer, State Center; two sisters, Helen Denzin, Buffalo, South Dakota and Mary Ann (Bill) Pfister, Elgin; mother-in-law, Irene Havenstrite, Fayette; two brothers-in-law, Wayne (Carolyn) Havenstrite and Roger (Kathy) Havenstrite, all of West Union and many nieces and nephews. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, DeEtta; three brothers, Clarence Hofer, Louis Hofer and Paul Hofer; brother-in-law, Donald Havenstrite and two sisters, Bertha Rainey and Rose Hofer.

Burdette J. Romig Sr., 86, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2006, in the Guttenberg Care Center, following a long illness. He was born icon December 25, 1919 in Edgewood to John and Nettie (Clark) Romig. He graduated from the Edgewood High School. He was united in marriage to Beulah Elsbury on November 22, 1939, in Greeley. Burdette was a life long resident of Edgewood and retired from FMC Corporation. He enjoyed camping and gardening. Survivors include his two sons, Burdette Jr. “John” (Susan) Romig and James (Martha) Romig of Edgewood; four daughters, Vera (Robert) Greve and Annetta (Harry) Hershey of Central City, Velma (George) Hershey of Alburnett and Ronda (David) Wilson of Central City; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and a sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Glen High of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah on June 15, 1985; his parents; a sister, Grace and her husband; an infant sister and two grandsons, Leo and Robert Greve.

Blanche Idella Hoover, 98, of Elkader, died Thursday, January 12, 2006, at Central Community Hospital, following a long illness. She was born icon on October 16, 1907, in Alburnett to Edward O. and Minnie M. (Davidson) Meakins. She was united in marriage to Ralph Hoover on November 28, 1928, in Cedar Rapids. They made their home in Elkader, and Blanche has been a resident ever since. She was a member of First Congregational Church and Chapter BZ of P.E.O. Survivors include her son, William (Nola) Hoover of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Scott (Deb) Hoover of Iowa Falls, Janice (Jan) Schiedel of Gurnee, Illinois and Todd (Kelly) Hoover of Evanston, Wyoming; six great-grandchildren, Casey and Alexander Schiedel, Hanna, Calla, Tessa and Joshua Hoover; two sisters, Emma Grace Callentine of Riverdale, Utah and Pauline Bond of Eugene, Oregon and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1998; three brothers, Leonard, Lawrence and Donald Meakins and two sisters, Alta Hempken and Zanita Hatton. Ruth Janet Sherman

Ruth was born icon December 4, 1920, on a farm north of Edgewood to Bertha (Weyant) and Ira Beyer. She attended rural schools and Edgewood High School, graduating in 1937. Ruth received her teaching certificate after attending the University of Dubuque. She taught in rural school for three years and later returned to college and received her B.A. degree in teaching from the University of Dubuque in 1968. Ruth taught for twenty-five years in schools in Petersburg, Strawberry Point, and Edgewood-Colesburg. On May 25, 1942, Ruth was united in marriage to Keith Sherman in Edgewood. The couple was engaged in farming near Edgewood until 1975, when they moved into town. Ruth was a 4-H leader for a number of years. She was active in Trinity Methodist Church, where she held various offices in the Circle and the United Methodist Women and sang in the choir. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, bowling, reading, and especially the hobby of art and painting. Ruth also loved to share garden produce and flowers with others. She was a member of the Edgewood-Colesburg Teachers Association, Iowa State Teachers Association, and the Del-Clay Retired Teachers Association. Ruth is survived by her husband, Keith of Edgewood; daughters, Linda Blackwell of Cedar Rapids, Bonnie (Ron) Elvidge of Kewaunee, Wisconsin; sons, Dean (Jackie) Sherman of Manchester, Neil (Jane) Sherman of Edgewood; a sister-in-law, Fran Beyer of Wooster, Ohio; ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters and their husbands, Wilma and Fred Heinzelman, Mabel and Ray Sevey; a brother, Paul Beyer; a brother and his wife, Francis and Betty Beyer; and a grandson, Zachary Sherman. Ruth and Keith were married almost 64 years. Ruth had a rich and rewarding life, filled with love for each other and for each of their children and their families. She was a very proud and private person and will be remembered for her deep faith, kindness, and love.

A memorial fund in Ruth’s name has been established by the family.

Jessie Caroline Lee, 95, died Sunday, January 8, 2006, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader following a brief illness. She was born icon November 3, 1910, in rural Colesburg, to Frank and Effie (Garber) Brown. Jessie graduated from Colesburg High School in 1930. She was united in marriage to Cleo Lee on February 19, 1935, in Dubuque. Three children were born icon to this union. Jessie taught country school for one year. She helped Cleo on the farm until they retired to Elkader in 1981. She loved flowers, gardening, cooking and spending time with family and friends. She is survived by her three children, Lila (Paul) Sabin, Cedar Rapids, Bonnie (James) Tuecke, Garnavillo, Larry (Linda) Lee, Elkader; six grandchildren, Alan (Dawn) Sabin, Cedar Rapids, Todd (Mickey) Sabin, Cedar Rapids, Sara (Brian) Lawrence, Garnavillo, Joe (Liz) Tuecke, Elkader, Douglas (Jennifer) Lee, Fairfax, Dean Lee, Elkader; twelve great-grandchildren and one brother, Chance (Bethel) Brown, Colesburg. Jessie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on December 27, 1990, two sisters, Gweneth Brown and Geneva Moser.
