Frederick "Fritz" William Sutter, 83, West Union, died Saturday, January 7, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Center, West Union, following a long illness. He was born icon October 4, 1922, on a farm in Clayton County, to Daniel and Hulda (Frederick) Sutter. Fritz attended country schools. On February 16, 1945, he was united in marriage to Arlene B. Hilgerson in West Union. Two children were born icon to this union. He farmed three years and worked for the lumber yard in West Union. He retired from Fayette County Road Maintenance in 1984. At that time, they moved to Lansing where they lived until ill health forced them to move back to West Union. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Arlene Sutter, West Union; his son Wayne and wife Judy Sutter, West Union; his daughter Sandy and husband Mike Moser, West Union; two grandchildren, Krista (Ron) Dunt, Hampton, and Troy (Brenda) Moser, Cresco; five great-grandchildren, Hailey, Emily, Kortney, Morgan and Spencer; brothers, Leo (Vi) Sutter, Cedar Rapids, Don (Marilana) Sutter, Elgin and two sisters, Marie Anderson, Elgin and Erna (Kenny) Koupal, Cedar Falls. Frederick was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Selmer Sutter in infancy.

Thomas William Wagner, 79, Monona, died Saturday, January 7, 2006, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, MN, following a sudden illness. He was born icon January 10, 1926, in Monona, to Herbert and Ruth (Arnold) Wagner. Thomas attended St. Patrick's Catholic School, Monona, through eighth grade and then attended Monona High School. He was united in marriage to Delores Berns on October 10, 1951, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Six children were born icon to this union. Thomas was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a life long member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Monona. He farmed his entire life in Monona. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, dancing, hunting, the cabin on the river, sports, puzzles and spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Delores, Monona; children, Nancy (Gary) Grinna, Postville, William (Michelle) Wagner, Monona, Donald (Cheryl) Wagner, Farmersburg, Mary (Daryl) Schlein, Monona, Steven (Paula) Wagner, Monona, Amy (Greg) Hermiston, Sherrill; grandchildren, Brent, Bradley and Blaine Grinna, Megan, Mitchell and McKenzie Wagner, Brian, Randy and Lynnette Wagner, Timothy, Laurie and Emily Schlein, Michael, Kellie and Rachel Wagner, Benjamin, Adam and Ellie Hermiston and one sister in law, Helen Wagner, Postville. Preceding Thomas in death were his parents, sister Agnes Voss, brothers Joseph Wagner, Gerald Wagner and Herbert Wagner in infancy.

Mabel Blanche Murphy, 98, of Dundee, died Sunday, January 1, 2006, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester, following a brief illness. She was born icon in rural Garber on April 24, 1907, the daughter of Morris and Bertha (Strube) Bowman. She graduated from Elkport High School in 1922. Mabel was united in marriage to Royce L. Murphy on October 3, 1925. They moved to Dundee in 1938, and operated Murphy’s Garage and Grocery until retirement. Mabel enjoyed working in her garden and raising flowers. She had quite a green thumb. Her African violets were always a favorite. She is survived by a daughter, Faye Etta Grimm of Dundee; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Grace Kuehl of Elkport and Bertha Mae Simons of Colesburg; a sister-in-law, Delpha Bowman of Garber and many nieces and nephews. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Russell and Howard; a brother, Mark Bowman; a son-in-law, Floyd Grimm; two brothers-in-law, Elmer Simons and Louis "Kelly" Kuehl and a nephew, Chyrold Simons.

Alan Arthur Hoth, 44, Monona, died Sunday, January 1, 2006, at Memorial Hospital, Prairie du Chien, WI, following a sudden illness. He was born icon January 17, 1961, in Postville, to Reuben and Marilyn (Wagner) Hoth. He was baptized February 5, 1961, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Luana and confirmed April 11, 1976, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Monona. Alan graduated from MFL High School in 1979; Northeast Iowa Technical School, Calmar, in 1981 with a Construction Technology degree; Northeast Iowa Technical School, Calmar, 1986, with an Industrial Electrical degree and Upper Iowa University in 1990, with a B.S. for education, Secondary Mathematics and his coaching endorsement. He was united in marriage to Gwen Kaeser on August 15 1987, at the Rossville Presbyterian Church. They moved to the family farm in June of 1995, where he grew up. Two children were born icon to this union. While in high school, he worked with his father on the farm and with Hoth and Son carpentry. He also worked at Swiss Valley Farms, Luana, hired farm help, summer counselor at Camp Klaus, Monona Wire Corporation, Swiss Valley Farms, Gunder and Dura Automotives, West Union as a mechanical engineer for ten years. Currently, he taught at MFL Mar Mac Community Schools and worked security at the Isle of Capri and construction in the summer. Alan was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, where he also served on the church council, was a Sunday school teacher, Confirmation mentor, enjoyed singing in the church choir and was involved in Boy Scouts. His hobbies included reading, cooking, hunting, lifting weights, the outdoors, jeeping, coaching 5 on 5 basketball, cards, listening to music, attending sporting events and spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include his wife Gwen, Monona; his children, Andreana Hoth and Trevor Hoth, Monona; brother, Randy (Kathy) Hoth, Shorewood, WI; sister Gayle (Linn) Heithoff, Harvard, IL, brother, David Hoth, Denver, CO and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Leland Hoth, paternal grandparents, Arthur and Charlotte Hoth and maternal grandparents, Arthur and Margaret Wagner.

Glennalee Joan Busch, 78, formerly of St. Olaf, Iowa passed away Saturday evening December 31, 2005 in her daughter’s home in Orlando, FL after and extended illness. She was born icon on August 30, 1927, in Dubuque, IA to Otto and Hilda (Meyer) Meisner. Joan was united in marriage to Harvey F. Busch on August 30, 1947, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elkader, Iowa. Two children were born icon to this union. Joan was the City Clerk of St. Olaf for thirty-three years. Before that she was bookkeeper for Raizes Department Store for about four years in Elkader, Iowa. She loved her friends and family and a special friend Fred Cueno that also passed away this December. She loved to knit and was an avid fan of professional and college sports. Survivors include her daughter, Cheryl Hudlett and her husband Alan of Orlando, FL; grandchildren, Denis Hudlett of Tampa, FL and April Hudlett of Sherman Oaks, CA and a half sister, Jeanette Frost of St. Louis, MO. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Joey Busch and two half sisters, Dorothy Hanning and Eileen Lieb.

Clifton Gwynne Moser, 87, of Elkader, died Friday, December 30, 2005, at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on December 20, 2005. He was born icon October 19, 1918, near Osterdock to Fred and Anna (Rethwisch) Moser. He attended Mound School in Mallory Twp. Clifton farmed with his family in the rural Osterdock area. He was united in marriage to Hilda Storbeck on September 11, 1946. Shortly after the birth of their son, they moved to a farm just south of Elkader. In 1964, they moved to a farm two and a half miles north of Elkader on the Gunder road. Clifton retired from farming in 1984, and they moved into the town of Elkader in 1993. Throughout his life he remained actively involved in farming. He especially enjoyed attending machinery auctions, farm shows, fairs, operating his Case tractors and bulldozer. Along with his life long love for farming and nature, Clifton enjoyed traveling and visiting people. He had a great way of building friendships with others. Everyone loved his sense of humor and story telling. He had a strong connection with his family. Clifton loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with them and taking his grandchildren along on trips. Survivors include his son, Carlys (Laura) Moser, Elkader; grandchildren, David (Michelle) Moser, Elkader, Dalen (Candace) Moser, Farmersburg, Laura Lynne Moser (fiance Jessie Goldsmith), Dubuque, Carol Ann Moser, West Des Moines; great-grandchildren, Austin and Trevor Moser and Skylar and Sydney Moser and a sister-in-law, Helen Storbeck. Clifton also had many devoted and loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; four brothers, Clarence, Ellsworth, Lester and Dinbeigh and a sister, Parthenia Meyer.

Josephine Kniel, 95, of West Union, died Wednesday, December 28, 2005, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, following a brief illness. She was born icon June 7, 1910, in Elgin to Charles and Olive (Knight) Kniel. She graduated from Elgin High School and attended Cedar Rapids Business School. Josephine worked as a secretary for seventy-two years in some capacity; sixty-six of those years with Traeger & Koempel. She began working in West Union in 1928. She rode the Rock Island train from Elgin to West Union in the morning and rode home at night with the mailman. In 1935, she purchased a home in West Union where she lived until 2000, when she moved to Cedar Court. Josephine was a faithful member of the West Union Bethel Presbyterian Church, and served as secretary for the session for many years. She loved her family and many friends. She is survived by numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

Madonna Gertrude Syverson, 89, Elkader, died December 26, 2005, at the Elkader Care Center following a long illness. She was born icon June 6, 1916, in rural Monona, to Bert and Ethel (Henderson) Stafford. She graduated from Waukon High School. Madonna was united in marriage to Carl Henry "Hank" Syverson on June 15, 1937 in Badger, IA. They lived in Elkader for a time and then moved to Monrovia, CA. Following her husband's death in Monrovia, Madonna moved to Cedar Rapids, IA, where she worked for F.M.C. for eight years. She retired at this time and moved back to Elkader where she resided in the Keystone Apartments for twelve years. Due to ill health, she moved to the Elkader Care Center in 1996. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting. Survivors include her three children, Betty (Curtis) Rentschler, St. Olaf, Connie (Ervin) Jones, Swisher and Carl (Dottie) Syverson, Monrovia, CA; twelve grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1973; a son Donnie Carl in infancy and four sisters, Bernice Downing, Ethel Maxine Green, Hulda Clair Stafford and Betty Ann Stafford.
