Donald Harry Bacon, 71, of Monona, died Saturday, June 17, 2006, at the Great River Care Center in McGregor, following a long illness. He was born icon July 20, 1934, in Clayton Co., IA to Lloyd and Harriett (Schroeder) Bacon. He attended Monona schools. He was united in marriage to Jean Christofferson on October 1, 1955, at the Presbyterian Church in Postville. They made their home in Monona where Don worked at a DX Station, Monona Telephone Co. and operated Bacon Siding for twelve years. He loved hunting, fishing, woodworking and delivering Amish candy and baked goods. Survivors include his wife, Jean Bacon, Monona; two sons, Robert Bacon, Monona and Steve (Sandi) Bacon, Marion; grandchildren, Cory (Christina) Bacon, Monona, Sally and Bailey Bacon, Marion; great-grandchildren, Collin and Clare Bacon, Monona; brothers, Rick Bacon, Monona and Ralph (Linda) Bacon, Postville; a sister, Shirley (Jim) Drake, Hot Springs, AR and sisters-in-law, Beverly Bacon, Postville and Charlene Bacon, Monona. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William and Allan Bacon and a sister-in-law, Minerva Bacon.

Lucille H. Dodge, 85, of Colesburg, died Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at the Edgewood Convalescent Center after a long battle with lung cancer. Lucille was born icon December 9, 1920, to Harry and Amanda (Sodawasser) Handke near Guttenberg. She married Donald A. Dodge on March 15, 1939 in Dubuque, Iowa. She is survived by her husband Donald Dodge; her two daughters, Karen Kae Lammers (Lavern) of Colesburg and Cynthia Ann Yates (John) of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister Irene Schroeder of Garber and a brother Arthur Handke (Laureen) of Littleport. She was preceded in death by her parents, one great-grandchild, two brothers and two sisters. Family requests memorials be given to the American Cancer Society, Delaware Co. Hospice, and the BMJ Rodies Family Foundation.

Otis Leon Torkelson, 80, of Elgin, IA died Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at the Good Samaritan Home in Postville, IA. Otis was born icon May 1, 1926 to Clarence and Adelia (Benson) Torkelson in a log cabin that was built in the 1800’s, on the family farm in Clayton County. He was baptized and confirmed in the Highland Lutheran Church. He graduated from the Elgin Public School in 1943 and worked in the family automobile business until entering the U.S. Navy in September of 1944. Otis served on board the battleship USS Indiana in the Pacific Theater as a radar technician. He received his honorable discharge in June of 1946. Otis returned to Elgin and continued to work in the family business and in 1949 he and his brother Ivan bought into Torkelson Motors. In 1964 he assumed ownership of the farm water division, later known as Torkelson Pump Co. He retired in 1988. He was united in marriage to Gayle Broadbent on June 13, 1948 at West Clermont Lutheran Church, Clermont, IA. To this union four daughters were born. Otis and Gayle made their home in Elgin where Otis became a charter member of the Elgin Lutheran Church in 1954 and was an active member throughout his years serving on the church council as well. Otis was a member of the Elgin American Legion and the Elgin Community Club. During his life, he enjoyed various activities such as their snowmobile trips up North, spending time boating on the Mississippi, and relaxing at their summer home in Clayton, IA with friends and family. Survivors include his daughters: Susan Burrow Oak Harbor, WA, Jane Burrow Elgin, IA, Pat (Jeff) Snitker Waukon, IA, Nancy Green Iowa Falls, IA; 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, a brother Ivan (Eleanor) Torkelson, a sister-in-law Carol Torkelson, a brother-in-law Paul (Helen) Broadbent, a sister-in-law Donna Broadbent, and nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Gayle, a brother Dean, a great-grand son Matthew Burrow, and a brother-in-law Noel Broadbent. Dad will be remembered for his kind heart and warm smile that has seemed to touch everyone he crossed paths with. He joined our mother in heaven on what would have been their 58th wedding anniversary. What a gift for Mom!

John Paul Smola, 51, Monona, IA, died Friday, June 9, 2006, at Veteran’s Memorial Hospital, Waukon, IA, of complications from the chronic auto-immune disease, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. John was born icon on November 1, 1954, in Barstow, CA, to John Keith and Bonnie (Ketchum) Smola. As a military family, John received his education at a variety of schools across the country, including four years at St. Mary’s Boy’s School in Tokyo, Japan. The family retired to Monona, IA, in 1974. John continued his education at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, IA, in Horticulture. Over the years, John followed in the footsteps of his grandfather Smola and held a variety of jobs in landscaping, carpentry and welding. At the time of his diagnosis with SLE, John was a full-time student at Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar. John married Cheryl Drahn on November 1, 1980 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona. Together, they built their rural Monona home, where they rescued and raised the big dogs John loved so well. Before his illness, John was a high energy person who worked and played hard. He enjoyed canoeing, camping, cross-country skiing and rappelling with his brother. He especially enjoyed fishing the Minnesota Lakes with Kurt. Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Smola, Monona; parents, John and Bonnie Smola, Monona; one sister, Beth (Michael) Seelie, Jacksonville, FL; one brother, Jim Smola, McGrath, AK; two nieces, Jennifer and Emily Smola; three nephews, Christopher, Brennan and Garrett Seelie; parents in-law, Bob and Dorla Drahn, Monona; sister and brother-in-law, Jan (Kurt) von Meyer, Andover, MN and other family, friends and neighbors. John was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul and Iris Smola and Paul and Christine Ketchum.

Aileen was born icon Alice Aileen Culver on May 16, 1913, in Chicago, IL and she passed away at the age of ninety-three at Heritage Manor in Plano, TX on Tuesday, June 6, 2006. She was born icon to Aldean and Libbie Culver and was raised on a farm near Arlington, IA. After attending Arlington public schools, she received a liberal arts degree in English and secondary education from Upper Iowa University where she met her future husband of sixty-one years, Lewis George Thoma, of Elgin, IA. During the years following their marriage, her husband’s career in public education as a teacher and administrator took them to the Iowa school districts of Atkins, Springville, Edgewood-Colesburg, and Waterville (Alamakee) until they retired to Elgin in 1976. Her survivors include her daughter, Joan MacKenzie and grandson, Scott MacKenzie of Ann Arbor Mich.; her daughter-in-law, Kim Thoma and grandson, Jerry Thoma of Upper Marlboro, MD; granddaughter, Linda Thoma Corado of Falls Church, Virginia; and her daughter, Julie Thoma and son-in-law, Patrick Milliken of Dallas, TX as well as extended family in the Durant/Davenport area and countless friends throughout the state of Iowa and the Dallas, TX area.

Ruth D. Beckman, 84, of Delhi, died Thursday, June 1, 2006, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, following a sudden illness. Survivors include her son, Bruce Lahue and his wife Cindy of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Adam Lahue and Abigail Lahue and her husband Richard; and three great grandchildren, Richard, Nathanel, and Gabriel Lahue. Ruth was preceded in death by her husbands, Charles Lahue and Jack Beckman; one brother, Harry Buchanan; and one sister, Virginia Zimmerman

Cletus Joseph Hammell, 89, of Strawberry Point, died Tuesday, May 30, 2006, at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, following a long illness. He was born icon September 4, 1916, in New Albin, IA, to Fred and Matilda (Hoffman) Hammell. He was raised and educated in the area and attended rural schools. He served in the United States Army during WW II, from 1942 to 1945. Cletus lived in Scott County for a time where he farmed. He was united in marriage to Margaret Winckler on September 30, 1950, in Barton, WI. Nine children were born icon to this union. In 1965, they moved to Fayette County, where he farmed near Lamont. In 1974, he retired and moved into Strawberry Point. His wife died on February 20, 2004, and Cletus has resided at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester for the past two years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed visiting and spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his children, David (Wilma) Hammell, Gays Mills WI, Joyce (Bill) Trewin, Denver, Diane Hammell, Manchester, Jane Hammell, Cedar Rapids, Gary (Tammy) Hammell, Waukesha, WI, Ann Hammell, Denver, CO, Paul (Diane) Hammell, Marshalltown; a son-in-law, Terry Easton, Merton, WI; thirteen grandchildren, Chris Hammell and fiancee', Lacy Parrish, Eric Hammell and friend, Carolyn Boland, Meagan Trewin, Melissa Trewin, Keisha Hammell, Nathan Hammell, Rachel Hammell, Josh Easton and friend, Cheri Engelhardt, Jamie Easton and fiancee', Jeremy Thuemmler, Shannell Lord, Tyler Campbell, Alison Hammell and Austin Hammell; a great-grandson, Brady Hammell and a sister, Helen (Milton) Quillen, Eau Claire, WI. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret; two daughters, Mary Kay in infancy and Kathy Easton in 2004; a sister, Dorothy DeWulf; and two brothers, Clement and Vincent.

Faye Charlene Wiskus, 77, of Colesburg, died Saturday morning, May 27, 2006, at her home following a long illness. She was born icon November 6, 1928, in Elkport, IA, to Floyd and Bertha (Willie) Williams. She graduated from Elkport High School. She attended beautician school in Dubuque, and operated a beauty shop in Elkport for three years. She was united in marriage to Lavern Wiskus on October 10, 1950, at St. Patrick's Church in Colesburg. Four children were born icon to this union. They made their home in the Colesburg area, where they farmed for many years. Faye enjoyed gardening, sewing, caring for animals and bird watching. Her family was the greatest part of her life. Survivors include her husband, Lavern Wiskus, Colesburg; her children, Colleen (Wesley) Hansel, Colesburg, Lee (Jean) Wiskus, Colesburg, Steven (Cathy) Wiskus, Colesburg and Lesa (Lynn) Guyer, Colesburg; five grandchildren, Terry (Leng) Dempster, Stephanie Wiskus, Shelley Wiskus, Shawna Guyer and Austin Wiskus; one brother Ray (Shirley) Williams, Elkader, three sisters, LaVera (Burdette) Schenke, Colesburg, Jean (Leonard) Morarend, Osterdock and Gerry Williams, Elkport and a brother-in-law, Glen Gleason, Greeley. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Marvin, Ivan, and Julius Williams, a sister Irene Gleason and a grandson, Michael Hansel. The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to Heartland Hospice for their care and compassion shown to all of us.
