Donald D. Curran, 78, of Portland OR, formerly of the Garber and Edgewood area, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006, at Marquis Piedmont Care in Portland, following a sudden illness. Donald, son of Thomas B. Curran and Marguerite (Little) Stahl was born
January 9, 1928, at Volga, IA. He was raised and educated in the area and graduated from Elkader High School in 1945. On June 9, 1960, he graduated from the University of Washington with a Master of Health and Human Service degree; June 4, 1962, graduated from Oregon State with a Bachelor of Science degree and September 11, 1964, graduated from the University of California with a Master of Public Health Degree. Donald was a food inspector in Oregon. He loved to garden, read and visit with relatives and old friends. He is survived by two brothers, Clarence (Barb) Stahl, Grinnell, IA and Ralph Stahl, Ft. Worth, TX; one sister, Karen (Terry) Meese, Edgewood, IA; four nieces and nephews and eleven great nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Carlyle.

Kay LaNell Lemka, 65, Elkader, passed into heaven surrounded by her family on Monday, May 22, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. She was born
in Elkader on August 26, 1940, the daughter of Willis and Nellie (Landis) Lamphier. She attended Elkader schools. On October 26, 1957, she married Kenneth Louis Lemka at the First Congregational Church in Elkader. They were the proud parents of two children, Keith and K’Dean. She retired after twenty-two years at Wilke’s Grocery as produce manager. The highlight of her life was her family. She was mom to many and will be missed more than we can explain. Kay was a lifetime member of the First Congregational Church, where she was active in the Ladies Guild, Pilgrim Heritage dinner and annual apple pie sale. She loved cooking and being surrounded by her loved ones. Her family was her life. Those left to share a lifetime of memories include her husband, Kenneth Lemka, Elkader; a daughter, K’Dean (John) Dunnwald, Marion; daughter-in-law, Marie Lemka, Cedar Falls; four grandchildren, Zackary and MacKenzie Lemka, Jacob and Rachel “Tallulah” Dunnwald; two sisters, WillaDean Kaeser, Waukon and Norma Nelson, St. Olaf; special family members, John and Connie Liljegren, Cedar Falls; a special second mom, Ona Lamphier, Arlington; many nieces and nephews and many special extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Keith Lemka in 2002; a brother, Leonard Popenhagen; a nephew, Scott Brombacher; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Schwietert. Memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church, Central Community Hospital, Central Ambulance Service or American Lung Assoc.

Alton Orrin Evanson, 87, Monona, IA, died Monday, May 22, 2006, at Northgate Care Center, Waukon, IA, following a short illness. Alton was born
on March 20, 1919, in Harpers Ferry, IA, to Oscar and Henrietta (Rema) Evanson. He attended country schools through the eighth grade. Alton was baptized on April 30, 1919, and confirmed on July 2, 1933. He was united in marriage to Doris Dundee on January 20, 1950, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, IA. Eight children were born
to this union. Doris passed away in 1987. Alton farmed most of his life and worked at Bituma-Stor, Marquette, for twenty years. He loved spending time with his family and friends, gardening, hunting and fishing. Survivors include eight children, Roger Evanson, Coggon, Charlene (John) Wolter, Dubuque, Ronald (Deb) Evanson, Monona, Dorothy (David) Patterson, Coal Valley, IL, Connie (Robert) Gunderson, Monona, Randy (Sandra) Evanson, Monona, Jerry Evanson, Ottawa, IL, Terry, Evanson, Monona; twenty grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren and one sister, Charlotte Mathis, Waukon. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Honroe and Melbourne Evanson.

Armella Kathleen (Kruse) Ries, 71, of Strawberry Point, lost her struggle with multiple myeloma cancer on Saturday, May 20, 2006. Diagnosed in June, 2000, she challenged the disease with remarkable fortitude and strength. She was born
December 15, 1934 in Petersburg to Elmer and Louise (Loecke) Kruse. She attended SS. Peter and Paul Catholic School in Petersburg. Armella was preceded in death by her husband and parents. She married Gilbert E. Ries on September 1, 1954. They were blessed with seven children, 19 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. Gib and Armella first farmed near New Vienna and in 1959 they bought the "home" farm near Strawberry Point where they raised their family. In December, 1985 they bought a house in town and retired. Gib and Armella planned to build a house south of Strawberry Point. Armella carried out this dream. She designed and built the home where she lived for the last 4 1/2 years. Armella loved living. She cherished her family; girls' weekends; friends; volleyball, card parties, coffee club and dancing. Her hands were always busy quilting, finishing woodwork for her children's homes, cooking/baking, sewing, gardening, and her ever-vigilant letter writing. She was a faithful steward of her faith, a member of St. Mary's parish in Strawberry Point, active in the OLCC, parish council and a CCD teacher. She was always willing to help and give to those in need. Armella is survived by her children, Charles (Kate) Ries, Strawberry Point; Vickie Ries, St. Paul, MN; Chris (Sandy) Ries, Edgewood; Deb (Bob) Recker, Strawberry Point; Cindy (Mike) Wilharm, Oelwein; Daniel (Patty), Robins; Nancy (Joseph) Smelter, Peoria, AZ; nineteen grandchildren, Brian, Nicole and Chad Ries; Lauren Ries; Caryn (Tim) Fry, Colleen, Nathan and Natalie Ries; Tony, Wesley, Tyler, and Philip Recker; Rachel (Jason) Keeler, Derek and Chelsea Wilharm; Emily and Alex Ries; Allison and Amanda Smelter; four great-grandchildren, Zachary Sullivan, Misty, Emma, and Gracie Fry; three brothers, John (Donna) Kruse, Petersburg; Arnold Kruse, Fredericksburg, MD; and Ken (Mona) Kruse, Milan, IL.

Helen Ann was born
on July 27, 1935, in Dubuque, Iowa to Arthur and Helen (Loeffelholtz) Koch. She was raised and educated in Dubuque. Helen was united in marriage to Lester Maker in Dubuque on February 4, 1954. Nine children were born
to this union. She was a homemaker and a nursing assistant and the couple lived in Dubuque until 1983 when they moved to Manchester. Lester passed away in 1994. Helen died on May 18, 2006, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness. She was seventy years of age. She enjoyed her grandchildren, bingo, shopping, fishing, and camping. Survivors include her children, Dorothy (Francis) Porter of Dundee, Lester (Linda) Maker, Jr. of Dyersville, Debbie (Larry) Goedert of Dubuque, Phil Maker and special friend, Kelly of Edwall, Washington, Chris Maker of Manchester, Brenda (Virgil) Lewis of Manchester, and Becky (Chris) Nefzger of Manchester; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one brother, Joe (Janet) Koch of Dubuque; three sisters, Tina Schiessl of Dubuque, Wanita Hesseling of Florida, and Ceil (Tony) Dubois of Forest Lake, Minnesota. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Helen Koch; her husband, Lester Maker; one son, Steve Maker in 2005; and one daughter, Blenda in infancy; two brothers, Bud and Ambrose Koch; and two sisters, Mary Rowan and Lucille Handfelt.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Helen’s name.

Julia Iola was born
on February 7, 1916, at home in Shell Rock, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Burma (Goodsell) Achilles. She was raised and educated in the area graduating from Finchford High School in 1935. Julia was united in marriage to Roger J. Ginther on August 18, 1937, at Janesville, Iowa. She was a homemaker and Roger and Julia made their home in Waverly and Waterloo. Roger passed away in 1983. Julia has lived in Manchester the past four years. Julia passed away at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester on Wednesday, May 17, 2006, following a brief illness. She was ninety years of age. Julia’s hobbies included making rugs, cross word puzzles, and reading. Survivors include her children, Kenneth (Cheryl) Ginther of Marion, Charles (Carol) Ginther of New Hartford, Julia Perry of Manchester, Iola (Ross) Schneiderman of Swea City, Vera (Robert) Smith of Manchester, Kathleen (Melvin) Bailey of Evansdale, Roger (Susan) Ginther of Waterloo, and Dale (Carletta) Ginther of Oelwein; one half-sister, Kathryn Moore of Waterloo; twenty-four grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and her caretaker, Shelly Chapman of Manchester. Julia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roger J.Ginther; one daughter, Laura Conwell; two still-born daughters; two sisters, Mary Suhr and Martha Hodges; two brothers, Fred and Clarence Achilles; and special friend Ercel Hinck.

Merle Dean Pohlman was born
in Manchester, Iowa, on September 28, 1941, the son of John and Myrna (Claus) Pohlman. He was raised and educated in Manchester, graduating from Manchester High School in 1959. He was united in marriage to Carol Clendenen on March 30, 1963, three children were born
to this union. Merle was employed by Rockwell Manufacturing for ten years, owned and operated Pohlman Siding, and was employed by Energy Manufacturing at Monticello until retiring in 2003. . Merle was a member of United Auto Workers Local 1613. Merle died at his home in Manchester on Tuesday, May 16, 2006, following a brief illness. He was sixty-four years of age. He enjoyed his grandchildren, fishing, hunting, pool, cards, computer gambling, and earlier in his life, woodworking. He is survived by his wife, Carol of Manchester; two daughters, Deanne (Rick) Wulfekuhle of Dyersville and Cindy (Matt) O’Meara of Manchester; one son, Shawn (Tara) Pohlman of Manchester; eleven grandchildren; and one brother, John “Mick” (Cheryl) Pohlman of Raytown, Missouri. Merle was preceded in death by his parents, John and Myrna Pohlman; a brother, Gordon Pohlman; and an infant sister, Barbara.
