Lula Jennie Dahling, 91, Elkader, died Tuesday, May 16, 2006, at the Elkader Care Center, Elkader, following a long illness. She was born
April 26, 1915, in Viola, WI, to Orlando and Myrtle (Rice) Bankes. Lula had a twin sister, Beulah who died of pneumonia at eleven months. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on February 5, 1928, at the Christian Church, Richland Center, WI, by Rev. Longman and confirmed on April 10, 1935 at Hope Lutheran Church, Littleport, by Rev. H.L. Blessing. Lula graduated from high school in Richland Center, WI. She was united in marriage to Carl W. Dahling on October 6, 1935 in Elkport by Rev. Damn. Three children were born
to this union, Marvin, Harold and Keith. Together, Carl and Lula farmed for many years. In her free time, Lula liked to sew, do crafts and garden. She was active in her church, was an officer with WELCA and taught Sunday school for a number of years. She lived 4-H through her boys and grandchildren. She was a member of the Friendly Circle Club. Survivors include her three sons, Marvin (Annette) Dahling, Elkader, Harold (Nadine) Dahling, Elkader, and Keith (Geraldine) Dahling, Holts Summit, MO; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mary Bankes, Elkader and Lorraine Bankes, Altena, MI and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Hurless, Otto and Orval Bankes and her twin sister, Beulah.

John Limkemann, 89, Oelwein, formerly Garnavillo and Marquette, died Saturday, May 13, 2006, at the Oelwein Health Care Center, Oelwein, IA, following a long illness. He was born
September 25, 1916, at Leola, South Dakota, the son of Wilhelm and Magdalena (Feikert) Limkemann. He attended school through the 8th grade in Illinois. Starting at a young age, he built wagons and trailers. He was a farm hand when the family moved to Iowa. He was united in marriage to Eunice A. Olson on November 23, 1938, at St. Olaf, IA. Six children were born
to this union. They farmed near St. Olaf for a time, and then moved into St. Olaf for a few years where he did trucking and also was a mechanic. John served in the U.S. Navy, during WWII 1943-1945. Following his discharge from the Navy, John returned to St. Olaf where he worked at the St. Olaf Lumber Yard for approximately six years. He then worked with a rock crushing portable plant for five years, going to small towns in Iowa and Kansas, eventually ending up at the company's main plant in Cedar Rapids, IA, for a few more years. Following this employment, he was a mechanic at a local car dealer for a time. He then went to classes for operating gas stations and owned his own station on Highway 30 in Cedar Rapids until the 380 and 80 highway construction closed him down. He went to work at Iowa Steel until he retired, but, he couldn't stay retired. John and Eunice moved to Marquette where he did commercial fishing on the Mississippi with his wife helping him. He also did some welding for the junk yard. John enjoyed pleasure fishing all of his life using his boars and pontoon. He was a nice guy. We will all miss him. Canasta, Uno and Skip Bo was played often during his lifetime. He was loved very much by his adoring wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, parents, siblings and other relatives. John is survived by his wife, Eunice, Oelwein, IA; his six children, Joyce (David) Maresh, Swisher, IA, Eugene (Janet) Limkemann, Leesburg, FL, Dennis (Pat) Limkemann, Simi Valley, CA, Diana (Lee) Hamer, Garnavillo, IA, Randy (Jolynn) Limkemann, East Lyme, CT, Richard (Paula) Limkemann, Fairfax, IA; twelve grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Paul (Ruth) Limkemann, Rochester Hills, MI, August (Gladysj) Limkemann, San Antonio, TX, Joseph (Pat) Limkemann, Cedar Falls, IA and one sister, Rose Barker, Waukon, IA. He was preceded by his parents, four brothers, Gottlieb, David, Henry and Daniel; three sisters, Mary Perry, Clara Kohrs and Bertha Limkemann.

Ernestine Schoien Reavis, 92, of Elkader, passed away Friday, May 12, 2006, at the Central Community Hospital, Elkader, following a long illness. She was born
in Clayton County on November 22, 1913, to Herman and Alma (Torkelson) Schoien. Ernestine was raised and educated in Clayton and Allamakee County. She was baptized, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and was a member of the Highland Lutheran Church. Ernestine graduated from the Lansing High School, Lansing. She received her B.A. degree Magna Cum Laude at Upper Iowa University. Ernestine taught elementary school for forty years. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society and the Clayton County Genealogy Society. She was united in marriage on November 5, 1934, to Floyd A. Reavis at Elk Point, SD. They became the parents of two children. Ernestine enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, doing needlework and gardening. In her retirement, she made embroidered quilts for each of her descendants and others for her church to give to the EWALU quilt auction and to some of Highland’s pastors. She is survived by her children, Eleanor (Neal) Krieg, Elgin; Frank Reavis and friend, Darlene Hogan, Dubuque; grandchildren, Sue (Jeff) Meyer, Jason Reavis, Dan (Kerry) Reavis, Ryan (Sandy) Reavis, great-grandchildren, Andrew and Ben Meyer, Zachary, Logan and Rachel Reavis; sisters, Arlene Schoien and Corinne Schoien. Ernestine was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Floyd.

Rose Marie (Ehrhardt) Matsler, Sinton, TX, formerly of Elkader, IA, fourth child of Edward H. and Delia (Cain) Ehrhardt went home to the Lord on Tuesday May 9, 2006, at 80 years and 10 months of age. Rose was baptized, made her First Communion, confirmed and married in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Elkader, IA. She graduated from St. Joseph’s School, worked a year during WW II at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Peoria, IL. Rose attended Waterloo School of Beauty Culture in Waterloo, Iowa. Returning to Elkader, she worked with her sister Marguerite Berns for several years until her marriage on June 18, 1949, to Myron L. Matsler of Rantoul, Illinois, who worked in Elkader at the Goodyear Tire Store. Rose and Myron lived in Elkader, Iowa; Hampton, Iowa; Clarion, Iowa; Blue Earth, Minnesota; Mobridge, South Dakota and Montevideo, Minnesota before moving to Sinton, Texas in 1972. Rose was a housewife and mother who devoted her spare time to Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and various church activities. She was an avid golfer, loved to fish and laugh. Through the years, she enjoyed her many travels around the world and visits to family and friends, often returning to Elkader. Rose was preceded in death by her husband Myron, sister, Geraldine Gundacker and husband, Charles; sister, Marguerite Berns; brother, Michael Ehrhardt and wife Jean; brother-in-law, Gerald Matsler and brother-in-law, Charles Matsler and wife, Virginia. Survivors include daughter, Lynn (Thomas) Brod, Bulverde, Texas, daughter, Susan (Michael) Merkler, Sinton, Texan, son, Michael (Jane) Matsler, Sinton, Texa and one grandson, James Matsler, Sinton, Texas; one sister-in-law, Fonda Matsler, Amarillo, Texas; brother-in-law, Larry Berns of Elkader; numerous nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

Robert Burdette Palmer was born
May 28, 1918, near Garber, Iowa, to Albert and Norma (Hansel) Palmer. He was raised and educated in the area. Robert was united in marriage to Ivanelle Harbaugh on June 24, 1942, at Kahoka, Missouri. Robert was a farmer and welder over the years; together they lived near Edgewood and in 1971 moved to Strawberry Point. Robert worked for Henderson Manufacturing in Manchester and Iowa Manufacturing, Allis Chalmers, and Harnfphager in Cedar Rapids. After an extended illness, Robert passed away at the Edgewood Convalescent Center on Sunday, May 7, 2006. He was eighty-seven years of age. Robert was a member of the United Methodist Church in Strawberry Point for many years. In the past he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Ivanelle of Strawberry Point; two sisters-in-law, Hazel Palmer of Tucson, Arizona, and Darlene Harbaugh of Strawberry Point; and two brothers-in-law, Keith (Marie) Harbaugh of Strawberry Point and Robert (Joanne) Harbaugh of Edgewood. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Harvey, Dale and Raymond.

David W. Hein Sr., 65, Prairie du Chien, WI, formerly of Strawberry Point, IA, died Saturday, May 6, 2006, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital, Prairie du Chien, WI, following a sudden illness. He was born
in Dubuque, IA, on May 6, 1941, to Milton F. and Virginia Mae (Donner) Hein Sr. David attended Elkader High School, Elkader, IA. He lived and farmed in northeast Iowa with his family. He met his wife, Connie Beisker, in this area, and they were married on February 10, 1961. Five children were born
to this union. David and Connie lived and farmed in Northeast Iowa for fourteen years. They moved to Wauzka, WI, where they lived for five years before moving to La Plata, MD. While in La Plata, David owned a siding and gutter business (David Hein & Son) for twenty nine years. They moved back to Wisconsin on July 28, 2005. David enjoyed hunting as a young man, and watching animals as he grew older. His wife, family and church were very special to David. He is survived by his wife Connie, Prairie du Chien, WI; his children, David W. (Michele) Hein Jr., Waldorf, MD, Tina L. Hein, La Plata, MD, Bruce M.P. (Diane) Hein, La Plata, MD, Timmy R. (Gissel) Hein, Mineral, VA, Melissa M. (Michael) Bowie, Waldorf, MD; ten grandchildren, Sharon, Jessie, Tiffeny, David III, Carly, Haylee, Christopher, Juston, Jerrett and Anthony; brothers, Milton F. (Marge) Hein, Jr., MD, Bruce M. Ruby E. Frye, 81, Elkader, died Wednesday, May 03, 2006, at the Elkader Care Center following a long illness. She was born
August 28, 1924, in Jefferson Township, Guttenberg, to George and Ida (Troester) Thiese. She attended rural schools in Clayton County, and then graduated from Guttenberg High School. She was united in marriage to Lyle Frye on November 27, 1947, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona. Ruby worked as a clerk at the Elkader Hotel for a number of years. She was an active member of Peace Church in Elkader and volunteered at Osborne for many activities. Ruby loved sewing, quilting, cooking, gardening and playing cards. Survivors include her sister, Ruth (Stanton) Klinge, Farmersburg and many nieces nephews and other family members. Ruby was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Lyle in 1981. In lieu of flowers, Ruby requested memorials be directed to the Diabetes Association.

Ilse H. Koehn, 73, died Tuesday, May 02, 2006, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader following a short illness. She was born
April 9, 1933, in rural Guttenberg to George and Martha (Arndt) Ruff. Ilse graduated from Elkader High School. She was united in marriage to Leo Koehn on May 27th, 1951, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. One daughter was born
to this union. Ilse was a farm wife and enjoyed working on the farm with Leo and taking care of their grandchildren. She worked at the Elkader Care Center for many years. Survivors include her husband, Leo, St. Olaf; daughter, Dianna (Marcus) Baumgartner, St. Olaf; two grandchildren, Jason Glawe, Minneapolis, MN, his fiancé Jennifer Haight and Jodi Baumgartner, St. Olaf, her fiancé Matt Casper; sister Inge (Earl) Baumgartner, Elkader, several nieces, nephews and many friends. Ilse was preceded in death by her parents and a sister and brother in law, Marianne and Bill Horns.
