Shirley A. German was born icon May 4, 1935, in Humphrey, Nebraska, to Albert and Ella (Herchenbach) German. Shirley had been an active community member in the Manchester area since 1945. She attended and graduated from Manchester High School in 1953. On May 4, 1957, Shirley was united in marriage to Donald Monaghan. Together they farmed and ran Monaghan Electric, Inc. for many years. Shirley was passionate about gardening and creating a comfortable home for her family. Those who knew Shirley best will remember her quick wit, sharp mind, and unwavering faith. She will be dearly missed. Shirley died peacefully at 12:33 a.m. on Monday, May 1, 2006, after an extended illness at home with her entire family at her side. She was seventy years of age. Shirley is survived by her loving family, including her husband, Donald; her children, Carrie (John) Pallat of Princeton, New Jersey, Cathy Monaghan of Chesterfield, Missouri, Allen (Keila) Monaghan of Manchester, Art (Emily) Monaghan of Northfield, Minnesota, and Angie Monaghan of Manchester; seven grandchildren; and one brother, Father Ambrose German OFM of Hermann, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her four children, Anne and Lee in infancy, and David and Dan; her parents, Albert and Ella German and a sister, Flora Mae Frick.

Shirley was very involved in St. Mary’s Church, including her role as Rosary Society President for Catholic Daughters of the Americas, an active member of the St. Mary’s School Alumni committee, the Assumption Choir, and the North St. Gerard’s Study Club. She was also a past 4-H club leader, and faithful attendee of her children’s and grandchildren’s many activities.

Memorials may be designated for St. Mary's Catholic Church in Manchester, Iowa.

Alto Gene Kelly, 74, of Volga, died Sunday, April 30, 2006, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, following a sudden illness. He was born icon February 10, 1932, in Littleport, to Gay and Lois (Lowers) Kelly. On April 8, 1952, he was inducted into the United States Army and he was honorably discharged on April 7, 1954, after serving in the Korean War. He was united in marriage to Beverly Sterling on February 17, 1952, at Edgewood. Two children were born icon to this union. Alto worked at Wilson's Packing House in Cedar Rapids for ten years, and then he farmed near Elkader until retirement. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, loved spending time with his family, especially attending school activities for his great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Beverly, Volga; his son, Randy (Karla) Kelly, Wichita, KS; one grandson, Scott (Becky) Kelly, Guttenberg; four great-grandchildren, Alisha, Trevor, Dustin and Kayla Kelly, Guttenberg; his mother-in-law, Mildred Sterling, Guttenberg; special aunt, Esther Goering, Cedar Falls; two brothers, Harlin (Jeanne) Kelly, Cedar Rapids, Charles (Darlene) Kelly, Elkader, one sister, Sharon (Bernard) Thein, Strawberry Point and many friends. Alto was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Deborah on August 31, 2001, two brothers, Gerald Kelly, Wyvil "Butch" Kelly and three sisters, Luella Rathbun, Zelpha Henry and Kay Kamoss.

Mae Dorothy was born icon on May 22, 1914, in rural Delaware County to Otto and Lula (Griffin) Burns. She attended rural schools and was a graduate of Manchester High School. Mae was united in marriage to Donald Miller and two daughters were born icon to this union. Together they resided in town. Donald Miller passed away on September 30, 1943. On March 15, 1947, Mae married Dale Diercksen and together they farmed. This union was blessed with two sons. Mae was a homemaker, mother, and wife. Dale passed away on March 25, 1990, and in 1991, Mae moved into Manchester. She has been a resident of the Good Neighbor Home since 2001. Mae passed away at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester on Monday, April 24, 2006, following an extended illness. She was ninety-one years of age. Mae was a long-time member of the First Lutheran Church and past 4-H leader. She enjoyed children, farming with Dale, cards, dominoes, gardening, cooking, and needlework. Survivors included her four children, Melva (Kenneth) Wenndt of West Des Moines, Shirley (Duane) Haight of Manchester, Larry (Susan) Diercksen of Manchester, and Keith (Jody) Diercksen of Lee Summit, Missouri; one brother, Marwan (Lillian) Burns of Manchester; one sister Alice (Sam) Cooper of Nashville, Tennessee; thirteen grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren. Mae was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Lula Burns; her husbands, Donald Miller and Dale Diercksen; and four brothers, Howard, Vernon, Merle, and Donald Burns.

Robert Joseph Grady

Robert Joseph Grady, 68, Monona, IA, died Sunday, April 23, 2006 in Milwaukee, WI, following a sudden illness. Bob was born icon on November 10, 1937, in Monona, IA, to Francis Peter and Lorraine Wilhemina (Kricke) Grady. He attended school through the eighth grade at St. Patrick Catholic School in Monona and graduated from Monona High School in 1955. Bob graduated from Northeast Iowa Technical College in Calmar, IA, with an Associates in Applied Science Degree as an Accounting Specialist. Bob entered the United States Navy on November 9, 1955 attaining the rank of Yeoman 1st Class Petty Officer. Bob was assigned to the USS Angler and to the Trident Nuclear Submarines, USS Kearsarge and the USS Skipjack. He was stationed in Hawaii, Greece, Italy, Germany, Spain, Philippines, Japan, England, France, Virginia, California, Illinois and Connecticut. From November of 1974 to November of 1976, he worked with NATO and served at the headquarters of the Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic in Norfolk, VA. Bob was a member of the Department of the Navy Fleet Intelligence Center Pacific. After serving his country for twenty-eight years, Bob was Honorably Discharged from the United States Navy on August 1, 1984. Bob was united in marriage to Lourdes Crucis Corona on April 25, 1965, at St. Joseph Cathedral, Manilla, Philippines, by Father Dunn. Three daughters were born icon to this union. While in the reserves, Bob worked for various accounting firms. After moving back to Monona, he worked for Dee Gosling CPA, Turkey Plant in Postville, Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien, WI, and started his own tax and accounting business, Bob Grady and Associates. Bob and Ludy owned and operated the B & L Café in Monona from 1982 to 1996. Bob was Am Vets Post 127 Commander and a Life Member of Am Vets Post 127 and the American Legion. He won the Frank L. Davey Award in 1991 from contributing most to membership promotion. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus #8178 where he was currently the Grand Knight and was a past District #9 Deputy Knight. He counseled countless Am Vet members when filing for retirement and medical benefits. Bob enjoyed watching sports, wood working, gardening, canning lots of tomatoes, MFL Bulldogs, Minnesota Vikings and enjoyed the musical entertainment at the Isle of Capri in McGregor. Survivors include his wife, Ludy Grady, Monona; three daughters, Mary Jane (Reed) Glawe, New Ulm, MN, Michelle Grady, New Ulm, MN, Melissa Grady, Monona; three grandchildren, Crysten, Arielle and Michael Glawe; six brothers and sisters, Maureen Keenan, Waukon, Ronald (Sandy) Grady, Monona, Caroline Drahn, Prairie du Chien, WI, Sharon Meisner, Onalaska, WI, William (Carol) Grady, Monona, Mary Louise (Gordon) Krambeer, Hiawatha and a host of many other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, James and Donald Grady.

Eldon John Schmidt was born icon on December 10 1937, in Earlville to Paul and Elda (Becker) Schmidt. He was raised and educated in the Manchester area, graduating in 1956. He attended Wartburg College for one year and was in the United States Navy for three years. In 1962, he married Joan Willia at First Lutheran Church in Manchester. One son was born icon to this union. They lived in Cedar Rapids and Eldon worked in sales. The couple later divorced and Eldon moved to Manchester and worked for Tredegar. He later retired due to health. Eldon passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following an extended illness. He was sixty-eight years of age. Eldon enjoyed visiting at Jude’s Café in Manchester. Survivors include one son, Michael J. Schmidt of Marshalltown; his father, Paul Schmidt of Manchester; one brother, Gordon (Alice) Schmidt of Manchester; one sister, Marvelyn (Rick) Davis of Martinez, California; and several nieces and nephews. Eldon was preceded in death by his mother, Elda Schmidt; one brother, David Schmidt; and a niece, Karla Schmidt.

William J. "Bill" Oehler
May 15, 1921 - April 15, 2006

William J. “Bill” Oehler, 84 of Delhi died Saturday, April 15, 2006, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester surrounded by family and friends, following an extended illness. He donated his body to the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Bill was born icon May 15, 1921, in Monticello the son of Thomas A. and Margaret C. (Burton) Oehler. He was united in marriage to Irene E. Wilson on February 9, 1942. They had two girls and two boys. Bill was engaged in farming. In February 1979, they lost Irene to cancer. Bill then married Marian Drees of Manchester in December 1980. Bill retired from farming in 1976, but continued to buy and sell cattle, seed corn, Gays Mills apples, and was a crop hail adjuster until 1992. Survivors include sons, Tom (Angie) Oehler of Minnetonka, Minnesota, and Burton (Nancy) Oehler of Manchester; twelve special grandchildren; and the great-grandchildren keep on coming; his wife of twenty-six years, Marian, who is at the Good Neighbor Home and her children. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Irene in 1979; and his two daughters, Wilma J. Boeckenstedt in 1988, and Marca J. Evers in 1996. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to everyone that helped take care of Bill.

Evelyn Jane Newsum

Evelyn Jane was born icon November 18, 1919, the daughter of Ralph and Harriet (Henderson) Dickerson in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She attended school and graduated from West High School in Waterloo. Evelyn was united in marriage to William Newsum on October 28, 1939, in Fort Dodge. Evelyn was a homemaker and they lived in the Waterloo area, spending time at Lake Delhi, and wintering in Arkansas and Arizona. The last seven years they have lived full time in Delhi. Evelyn died at the Edgewood Convalescent Home on Friday, April 14, 2006, following a lingering illness. She was eighty-six years of age. Survivors include her husband, William of Delhi; two sons, Robert (Linda) Newsum of Chariton, Gregory Newsum of Denver, Colorado; and one daughter, Carol Ann Stevenson of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; Seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Geraldine Wahl of Marysville, Washington. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Harriet Dickerson.

Verna Mae Henrietta was born icon on April 9, 1935, in Clayton Center, Iowa the daughter of Carl and Margaret (Burr) Berns. She was raised and educated in the Winthrop area. On October 26, 1953, Verna was united in marriage to Jerome “Jerry” Keppler at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Winthrop. Seven children were blessed to this union. Together they farmed near Lamont, West Union, Fayette, Strawberry Point and in 1963 they moved east of Manchester to farm. In1997 they moved into town. Verna also worked at the Montgomery Wards Catalog Store and the C & S Store in Manchester. She was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church for 42 years, belonged to Catholic Daughter of America, and showed her faith with her collection of rosaries. Verna was called to her heavenly home following a courageous battle with cancer, on Tuesday, April 11th. She was with her family in her home. Verna was seventy-one years of age. Verna loved having family get-togethers, Mother/Daughter Days, and watching her grandkids' and great-grandkids' ballgames. She enjoyed crocheting, baking cinnamon rolls, dancing, fishing, volleyball, bowling, playing cards, and a good “Manhatten”. Verna will be sadly missed by her husband, Jerry Keppler of Manchester; six children, Rosemary (Dan) Drees, Sue (Bill) Logan, Steve (Gloria) Keppler, Ronald Keppler, Lisa (Mark) Hepke, and Diane (Ken) Klein all of Manchester; thirteen grandchildren, Danelle O’Connell, Mike Drees, Jaci Zieser, and Curt Drees; Brian and Brett Logan, Phil and Drew Keppler, Ben and Kelsey Hepke and Derek, Kayla, and Kristi Klein; eight great-grandchildren, Blake, Bradley, Brooke, Gavin, Carter, Wesley, Chloe and Brayden; a sister, Leona Harris of Belle Plaine; brothers, Willie (Norma) Berns and Jim (JoLane) Berns of Marion, and Dennis (Mary) Berns of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law, Gladys (Jim) Hilsenbeck of Marion, Lucille Keppler of Strawberry Point, and Wilma Keppler of Oelwein; and brothers-in-law, Father Dan Keppler of Monona, Jim Keppler of Manchester and Irvin Keppler of Elkader. Verna was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Margaret Berns; parent-in-laws, Henry and Rose (Hoeger) Keppler; a son, Bill Keppler in 1975; brothers, Elmer and Donald Berns; a sister, Marie Monaghan; brothers-in-law, Cletus, Leonard, Ray, Harold, and John Keppler, Howard and Floyd Bushaw, Jim Harris, Bill Burr, and Francis Monaghan; and sisters-in-law, Mary Burr, Clarinda and Berniece Bushaw, Ollie, Lottie, Anita, and Florence Keppler, and Celine Berns. The family wishes to express a special thank you to Oncology Associates of Cedar Rapids.
