Robert “Bob” J. Kaiser was born icon March 16, 1932, in Earlville, the son of Joseph and Esther (Sternhagen) Kaiser. He grew up on the farm and attended rural schools in the area. On June 10, 1952, he was united in marriage to Adorine Heims at St. John’s Catholic Church in Delhi. Bob and Adorine farmed near Manchester until 1980. After retiring from farming, he worked as a mechanic, drove truck and did residential construction until his death. Bob took great pride in his family. He enjoyed his grandchildren, woodworking, gardening, and roses. He is remembered by his denim hats. Bob was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Manchester. God called Bob to his heavenly home with his family present on Sunday, April 9, 2006, at his home in Manchester. Bob recently celebrated his seventy-fourth birthday. Survived by his wife Adorine of Manchester; one son, Daniel (Laura) Kaiser of Masonville; four daughters, Kathy (Bruce) Hutchinson of Manchester, Twyla (Dana) Detrich of Manchester, Laura (Mark) Ries of Toddville, and Leanna (Richard) Fangmann of Manchester; eighteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, John (Lois) Kaiser of Cresco; four sisters, Anita (Arnold) Fischer of Earlville, Marie Neuhaus of Manchester, Bonnie Jean Anderson of Waterloo, and Patti Rath of Chicago; one sister-in-law, Mary Lou Kaiser of Earlville; and many nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jeff in 1987; two brothers Alfred and Kenneth Kaiser; and one sister, Ruth Kaiser.

Jeanne V. Amsden, 81, of Shellsburg, formerly of Edgewood, died Sunday night, April 9, 2006, at her son’s home in Shellsburg, following a long illness. She was born icon March 17, 1925 in Colesburg to Harry and Alvina (Steinfadt) Barnhart. She began her career as a teacher in a one room school house; she worked at Wright School and retired from Kindercare in Cedar Rapids. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Pythian Sisters, Grange, Plagman Barn, Olivet Prespytian and Jolly Jokers. Survivors include her two sons, Richard (Meredith) Amsden, Gilbertsville, PA and Steven (Ellen) Amsden, Shellsburg; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and three sisters, Ruth Harbaugh, Edgewood, Donna (Delos) Sadewasser, Guttenberg and Janice (Jim) Scherbring, Colesburg. Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Lowell (Edith) Barnhart, Kathleen (Dennis) Royalty and Marjorie (Jules) Moser and a brother-in-law, Dan Harbaugh.

Vivian Hope (Brandenburg) Phelps died Wednesday, April 05, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, following a brief illness. She was born icon February 17, 1930 in Cassville, WI, to James C. and Alice (Kafer) Brandenburg. Vivian was baptized in the Colesburg Methodist Church. She graduated from Guttenberg High School in 1949, and lived in Clayton County for the majority of her life. She was united in marriage to Leland Phelps on June 24, 1949, at the First Methodist Church, Colesburg, IA. Five children were born icon to this union. Vivian and Leland lived in Guttenberg until moving to the Phelps homestead near Colesburg in 1953 to farm. In 1982, they moved into town. Vivian held various positions during her working career. Guttenberg Button Factory, Egg Factory, Guttenberg Press for forty nine years, Editor of the Colesburg Chronicle for thirty six years, reporter for the Manchester Press for forty eight years, reporter for the Dyersville Commercial for fifty one years, special reporter for the Telegraph Herald for nine years and WMT Radio. Vivian was a Charter Member of the United Methodist Women, Mallory Mixers Farm Bureau Club, Craft Club and C.B. Club. Vivian enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, her reporting, and watching the Hawkeye Basketball team. She especially enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her two sons, Duwane and his wife Alice Phelps of Colesburg, Donald Phelps of Colesburg; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Karen) Jaster of Elkader; eight grandchildren, Keith Phelps, James (Sara) Phelps, David (Cassie) Phelps all of Colesburg, Melissa (Korey) Wilker of St. Olaf, Jasmine (Brandon) Marsh of Waterloo, Luke and Jake Phelps of Colesburg and Melinda Jaster of Elkader; six great-grandchildren, Hunter Phelps and Emma Phelps, both of Colesburg, Kody Wilker of St. Olaf and Riley Phelps, Dylan Sweerin and Gabriel Marsh all of Waterloo and special nieces, Priscilla Biedermann of Dubuque and Sharyn Ewert of Park View, IA. Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1994; a son, David and a daughter, Stella, both in infancy and four sisters.

Marlin Richard was born icon on November 30, 1928, near Newhall, Iowa, a son of Walter and Ilma (Werning) Schminke. He was raised and educated in the Newhall area, graduating from Newhall High School in 1946. On October 21, 1951, he was united in marriage to Donna Conner. Three children were born icon to this union. Marlin farmed and raised livestock north of Newhall until 1969 when he began his farm management career with Busse & Beneke, Inc. in Vinton. In 1970 Marlin and Donna and the family moved to Strawberry Point. Marlin continued working for Busse & Beneke, Inc. in the northeast Iowa office. Marlin later purchased the corporation and after reorganization renamed it Iowa ProAg. In 2005 he sold Iowa ProAg to Hertz Farm Management, Inc. Since his retirement he has continued with Hertz Real Estate Services as a real estate broker. Marlin died on Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness. He was seventy-seven years of age. He was a faithful member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Manchester. Marlin is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Donna of Strawberry Point; three children, Julie (Dale) Fagner of Elkader, Dan (Amy) Schminke of Cedar Falls, and Janet (Michael) Guyler of Palm Harbor, Florida; seven grandchildren, Michelle Minard, Michael Minard, Brittany Schminke, Brooke, Schminke, Hailey Schminke, Jennifer Guyler, and Sara Guyler; sisters, Lenore (Clifford) Thompson of Van Horne, Lois (Grant) Wessling of Atkins, Elaine Kromminga of Keystone, and Ruth (Darwin) Oehlerich of Keystone. Marlin joins his heavenly family who preceded him in death, his parents, Walter and Ilma Schminke; three brothers, Wilfred (Butch) Schminke, Darryl Schminke, and Vernon Schminke; and granddaughter Jessica Minard.

Marlin served his country in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953.

Memorials may be directed to Our Savior Lutheran Church, Bible Translaters or Northeast Iowa Christian Retirement Community of Strawberry Point.

Terry O. Meese, 61, of Edgewood, died Tuesday morning, June 27, 2006, at his home following an extended illness. He was born icon July 16, 1944, in Edgewood to Oscar and Kathleen (Madden) Meese. Terry was raised and educated in the area and graduated from ED-CO High School in 1962. He was united in marriage to Karen Stahl at Sacred Heart Church in Littleport on June 13, 1964. Two sons were born icon to this union. During his lifetime, Terry worked for the City of Cedar Rapids, FMC – LINKBELT, farming, for the City of Edgewood on a part-time basis, Edgewood Sale Barn and for the past twelve years at ATI in Delhi. Terry loved fishing, hunting, gardening, gambling and spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Karen Meese, Edgewood; two sons, Tim (Julie) Meese, Edgewood and Todd (Kristen) Meese, Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Andy, Katie, Tyler, Morgan and Megan. Terry was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Tom.

Realto O. Wold, 93, of Edgewood, died Sunday, July 30, 2006, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood, following a long illness. He was born icon February 13, 1913, near St. Olaf on his Uncle Andrew Wold’s farm where his parents farmed. He was the son of John and Mary (Reierson) Wold. They later moved near Gunder. He attended country schools, and was baptized and confirmed at Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder. He was united in marriage to Erma Rickert at Strawberry Point in 1938. Realto was a farmer, painter and musician. They purchased Erma’s folks farm near Edgewood and lived there for thirty-five years. They sold the farm and moved into Edgewood. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #606, Scottish Rite & El Kahr Shrine and Eastern Star. Realto was the leader of his musical band for over sixty-five years, and a member of the Delaware Co. Shrine Club. Survivors include his daughter, Joanne Wold of Madison, WI; a sister, Dolores Pine of Marion and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Erma on March 5, 1995; sisters, Lillian Boldt, Arnellia Sullivan, Belva Wold and Mildred Olsen and brothers, Milo, Nilus and Clifford Wold.

Lyla Rodas, 83, of Littleport, died Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home, Edgewood, following a long illness. Lyla Opal (Ruroden) Rodas was born icon January 6, 1923, on a farm in Highland Township. She was the youngest daughter of Olaf and Lettie (Malumquist) Ruroden. She was baptized at East Clermont Church, Clermont and confirmed at Highland Lutheran Church, rural Elgin. Lyla attended Spring Valley School #9. She was united in marriage to Elmer John Rodas on October 28, 1940, in Manchester. To this union two sons were born. Elmer and Lyla were married over sixty-three years. Lyla worked on a farm all of her life. She loved to dance, enjoyed country music and liked to gamble a little. Following her retirement, she enjoyed gardening and flowers. She loved her family and loved having them around, especially her grandchildren. Survivors include her sons, Loren (Nancy) Rodas, Hazel Green, WI and Dwight (Janis) Rodas, Littleport; four grandchildren, Darci (Dale) Middaugh, Sussex, WI, Brenda (Troy) Middendorf, Hazel Green, WI, Danielle (Mike) Pape, Littleport and Eric (Amber) Rodas, Dubuque; nine great-grandchildren, Ryan Redfearn, Morgan and Mason Middaugh, Connor Rodas, Cole Richardson, Emma and Elise Pape, Elizabeth Rodas and Adalyn Kline; and one sister, Alvina Halverson, Postville. Lyla was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on September 8, 2004; brothers and sisters, Mabel, Lloyd, Maynard and Agnes.
