Marian Lorraine Malstrom, 79, of Marion, formerly of Minnesota, died Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. She was born icon October 18, 1926, in Minneapolis, MN to Gust and Mabel (Nelson) Palmquist. She received her Master Degree in elementary education, and taught for many years. Prior to that she worked for the Civil Service. Marian was always active; she loved to travel, swim, biking, snow skiing, walking and driving. Survivors include her daughter, Vicky Hutchinson and her husband Ray of Manchester; grandchildren, Tim Hutchinson of Dundee and Rae Hutchinson of Manchester and a brother, Richard Palmquist of Hawaii. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Vernon and Donald Palmquist.

Faye Elizabeth Elliot, 94, of Edgewood, died Sunday, July 23, 2006, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home, following a long illness. She was born icon May 17, 1912, in Edgewood to Fred and Carrie (Whitney) Sherman. She graduated from Edgewood High School in May of 1928. She was united in marriage to John Hartley Elliot on December 17, 1928, at her parent’s home near Edgewood. They farmed with her parents for a time, and then moved to the Manchester-Earlville area where they rented and lived on several farms. In 1939, they moved back to the home place and eventually bought the farm and lived there until they retired in 1967. Faye was a long time member of the Congregational Church, now the Edgewood Bible Church. She served as White Cross chairman for many years. She also taught Sunday school and Bible school, and was active in Ladies Aid. She was always faithful in attending church until her health prevented her from doing so. Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Anthes and husband Alfred, Strawberry Point; a son, Paul Elliot and wife Mary, Edgewood; six grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; and infant daughter, Doris Irene and a granddaughter, Linda Anthes Gradert.

Christopher Joseph Kluesner, 42, of Manchester, died Saturday, July 22, 2006, as a result of an industrial accident. He was born icon July 13, 1964, in Dubuque, IA to William and Ellouise (Vaske) Kluesner. Chris graduated from Western Dubuque High School and Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar. He worked for ESCO Electric Company until his death. He was united in marriage to Bobbi Jo Aulwes on October 13, 1990, in Garber, Iowa. Chris had an undeniable love for baseball. He was an active Ed-Co Little League Coach and an Ed-Co Little League All-Star coach. He will be sorely missed at the diamond. He was his children’s #1 fan in everything they did. Chris was also an avid bow hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed camping with Tom and Jen and the kids and all of his family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Bobbi Kluesner, Manchester; his three children, Jared, Kayla, and Jacob all at home; his father, William Kluesner, New Vienna; five siblings, Carmen (Al) Digmann, Worthington, Colleen (Jeff) Lawler, Peosta, Carl (Tina) Kluesner, Dyersville, Connie (Bill) Link, Dyersville and Steve (Barb) Kluesner, Worthington; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Kenneth and Kay Aulwes, Edgewood; three brothers-in-law, Tim Aulwes, Edgewood, Lonnie (Barb) Aulwes, Dundee and Brad (Jess) Aulwes, Strawberry Point; four sisters-in-law, Connie (Michael) Dugan, Garber, Cathy (Dennis) Dugan, Colesburg, Becky (Bill) Dugan, Garber and Joni (special friend Chad Ernst) Guttenberg; five Godchildren, Shelly Meyer, Lily Aulwes, Kyle Boge, Levi Lawler and Kathryn Kluesner and many nieces and nephews. Christopher was preceded in death by his mother, Ellouise Kluesner; grandparents, Elmer and Rose Kluesner and Victor and Lucille Vaske.

Norbert C. “Bud” Walz, 81, of Monona, Iowa, died Saturday, July 22, 2006 at Memorial Hospital, Prairie du Chien, WI, following a brief illness. Bud was born icon on April 4, 1925 in rural Elkader, Iowa, to Edward “Jake” and Clara (Pluemer) Walz. He received his education at St. Joseph Catholic School, Elkader. Bud was united in marriage to Eileen Buckman on December 23, 1948, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Elkader. Four children were born icon to this union. Bud’s lifelong ambition was farming and cattle. He enjoyed going west to buy feeder cattle and then sharing his stories. Bud was a member of Clayton County Cattleman, Clayton County Fair Board and St. Joseph Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Eileen; four children, Clara (Denis) Lensing, Postville, Mike (Debbie) Walz, Monona, Susan (Larry) Sather, Larslan, MT, Dean (Melissa) Walz, Farmersburg; his grandchildren, Theresa Lensing, Jake (Betsy) Walz, Jared Walz, Jeff Walz, Johnny (Hannah) Walz, Lesley Walz, Kristy Walz, Miranda Walz, Becky (Justin) Bargmann, Jeff Sather, Scott Sather, Kurt Sather, Margo Walz, Macy Walz; one great-grandson Porter Walz; one sister, Florence “Sue” Meehan, Anamosa; two sisters-in-law, Emma Walz, Monona, Della Walz, Sequim, WA, and many nieces and nephews. Bud was preceded in death by his parents; Jake and Clara Walz; six brothers, Wilbur, Roland, Arnold, Francis, Lambert, Edward and two sisters, Jeanette Downey and Georgia Downey.

Richard Martin Opperman

Richard Martin Opperman was born icon in Strawberry Point, Iowa, on March 21, 1926, the son of Henry and Christina Merle (Luther) Opperman. He was raised in the Strawberry Point area and educated in country schools. Richard was drafted in the United States Army and served during World War II. On December 22, 1946, he was united in marriage to Celia Cummings. Together they farmed near Strawberry Point, Stanley, Fayette, Wadena and then back to the Fayette area. Richard enjoyed farming especially making work ground out of slough and clearing trees. He also operated his own semi over the years. Richard died Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. He was eighty years of age. Survivors include his wife, Celia Opperman of Fayette; seven children, Jim (Darlene) Opperman of Fayette, David (Patty) Opperman of Wadena, Diana (Rick) Hammond of Fredericksburg, Bill (Sherrie) Opperman of Mead, Colorado, Rose (Fred) Hilsenbeck of Arlington, Bob (Sue Anne) Opperman of Wadena, and Dennis (Debra) Opperman of Fayette; his mother, Merle Opperman of Marion; twenty grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; nine step great-grandchildren; and one sister, Beverly (Doran) Welch of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Opperman; a brother and sister-in-law, Arnold and June Opperman and their son, Burton; sister and brother-in-law, Vernita and Walter Faust and three grandchildren.

William Louis Wilke, 55, of rural Elkader, IA, died Monday, July 17, 2006 at Central Community Hospital, Elkader IA, of cancer. Bill was born icon on January 2, 1951 at the family farm house in rural Elkader. He was the son of Arno and Wilma (Beyer) Wilke. He graduated from Central Community High School, Elkader, IA in 1969. Bill married Melissa Clark at Peace United Church of Christ on September 2, 1973. Five children were born icon to this union. Bill was extremely dedicated to the family dairy farm that he was born icon on. He worked this farm with his wife, Melissa, their entire life together. Bill never spent a night away from his farm and continued to do chores until his recent hospital stay. He enjoyed life on the farm, fishing, and hunting deer in his timber. Bill valued his time spent with his family; and especially enjoyed his five grandchildren. Bill is survived by his wife, Melissa, Elkader; four children: Jennifer “Jenny” (Jeff) Fangman, Volga, Daniel “Dan” (Sylvia) Wilke, Elkader, Lanette (Brett) Schutte, Elkader, and LeAnn Wilke, Elkader; five grandchildren: Jonathon “Jon”, Katelynn and Andrew “Andy” Fangman, Hannah Wilke, and Cody Wilke. He is also survived by his step-grandchildren, Jeremy, Cheryl, and Tyler Fangman and his sister Helen (Bill) Little, Elkader. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arno and Wilma, and his son Douglas Allen Wilke in 1980.

Willis Henry Rowell

In Loving Memory Willis Henry Rowell died Monday, July 17, 2006 at his home in Edgewood following a lengthy illness. He was born icon January 10, 1920 on a farm near Littleport. He was the fourth child born icon to Lyle and Jennie (Musfelt) Rowell in a family of five sisters and one brother. He received his grade school education in a one-room country school and graduated from Edgewood High School. In June 1941 he married Ida Maye Young. One daughter, Debra, (Mrs. Nile Gleason) was born icon to that marriage. Nile and Debra produced two granddaughters for Willis and Ida Maye. Ida Maye died in April 1986. In December 1989 he married Linda Ashline Bunch. This marriage blessed Willis with a step-son, two step-daughters, a step-son-in-law and eventually seven step-grandchildren. Willis and each his wives enjoyed extensive travel from Iowa through the Dakotas to Oregon, California, Arizona and Colorado, and East to Virginia, Washington DC, New York, all of the New England states, plus Minnesota, Michigan and Canada. Willis and Linda also visited the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and The Virgin Islands. Willis spent most of his working life farming north of Edgewood. In 1969 he and Ida Maye moved to Edgewood and he worked for the National Farmers Organization in an effort to help family farmers gain some bargaining power and successfully compete at their marketplace with the giant corporations. Some of that time was spent in Des Moines and Washington DC helping get favorable farm laws passed and put into operation. One of his successes was getting the Family Farm Act passed in Des Moines. It limits the amount of farmland a corporation can own in Iowa. He retired from full time employment in January 1996. He always felt an obligation to help wherever help was needed. He served on the Elk Township Board of Trustees, Elk Township ASCS Committee, the Edgewood School Board, the Delaware County Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, the Advisory Board at Penn Center, The Backbone Country Club Board of Directors, the Advisory Committee for the U.S. Farm Census, the National Board of Directors for The National Farmers Organization, the Delaware County Tax Review Board, and was a volunteer for Scenic Valley Area Agency on Aging. He wrote two books and gave the rights of one, “Mad As Hell”, to a publicity firm for production of a movie. After his retirement he continued to help by writing a weekly column for The Manchester Press, entertaining the residents of the Edgewood Convalescent Home, and helping whomever needed help with a chore. Governor Vilsack awarded him The Governor’s Volunteer Award. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ida Maye; his parents, Lyle and Jennie; his brother, Lowell Rowell; and sisters Betty Keck and Genevieve Enderes. He is survived by his wife, Linda; daughter, Debra Gleason and her husband Nile of Edgewood; step-son, William Bunch of Long Grove; step-daughters, Patricia VanMeter and Susan Richmond and her husband Patrick, all of Marion; granddaughters, Sally Taylor of Cedar Rapids and Susan Gleason of Edgewood; step-grand children, Tabitha Schaul, Seth Jensen, Kyle VanMeter, Alexis VanMeter, and Spencer Richmond, all of Marion, and Brittany Bunch and Emily Bunch of Long Grove. Also surviving are his sisters Adrian Meves of Medford, Oregon; Doris Garvin of West Union; Ilo Rhines and her husband Don of Edgewood. Willis is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Betty M. Gehring
October 20, 1923 - July 16, 2006
Monona, IA

Betty Marie Gehring, 82, Monona, Iowa, died Sunday, July 16, 2006, at her home following a sudden illness. Betty was born icon in Monona, Iowa, on October 20, 1923 to Eldo and Lena (Soltow) Wirkler. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church. After graduation from Monona High School, she was employed at the Monona Dry Goods. She later went to Saginaw, MI, for employment in an aircraft factory until her enlistment in the USN WAVES as a WAVE in the Medical Corps. During WW II she served at Hunter College, NY; Bethesda Naval Hospital, Bethesda, MD; Mare Island Naval Hospital, Vallejo, CA and Hunters Point Naval Dry Dock, San Francisco, CA.

Betty was united in marriage to Lowell L. Gehring of Elkader, on December 29, 1945, in Yuma, AZ. One daughter was born icon to this union. During their marriage they traveled extensively while Lowell made a career in the U.S. Marine Corps. After retirement from the Marine Corps in 1966, they lived in Sunnyvale and Mountain View, CA. They returned to Iowa in 1977 where they made their home. Betty was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include her husband, Lowell Gehring, Monona; her daughter, Jeneen Gehring, Kellogg; granddaughters, Jina (Tom) Dziekan, Joliet, IL, Joleigh (Mark) Pucine, San Jose, CA; two great-grandchildren, Owen and Emma Dziekan and a sister-in-law, Marion Wirkler, Monona.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eldo and Lena Wirkler; one sister, Evelyn Liddle and three brothers Woodie, Donald and Robert Wirkler.
A private family Inurnment took place at the Monona City Cemetery with military rites.

Lorraine Marie Houg, 85, of Elgin, died Thursday morning, July 13, 2006, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, following a brief illness. She was born icon August 2, 1920, near Elgin to Daniel and Celia (Frieden) Butikofer. She was united in marriage to Myron Houg on April 10, 1947, at Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder. Four children were born icon to this union. They made their home near Elgin where they farmed for many years, moving to town in 1989. Lorraine enjoyed fishing, playing cards, gardening, collecting pencils and spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include her children, Marvin (Sue) Houg, Cedar Rapids, Marlys (Gordon) Oakland, Ossian, Loren Houg, Dumont and Lowell (Sharon) Houg, Elgin; seven grandchildren, Kaarn (Chad) McCarty, Julie (Jeff) Luzum, Leann Oakland, Michelle (Adam) Nicholas, Heather Houg, Jenna Houg and Quinton Houg; two great-grandchildren, Easton Luzum and Kaylee Nicholas; two brothers, Dan (Anna Marie) Butikofer, Elgin and Silas (Pat) Butikofer, Clermont; a sister, Mabel Thorsgaard, Elkader and a brother-in-law, Merlin Hellum, Elgin. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on March 17, 1989, two brothers, Ben and Elmer Butikofer and three sisters, Carrie Trafelet, Leah Schneider and Tillie Hellum.
