Marian E. Helgerson, 87, of Elgin, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, following a long illness. She along with her twin sister was born icon on November 29, 1918, to John and Dorothea (Lauer) Schatz. She attended the Dover #9 School, and in 1934, graduated from the North High School at West Union from the Normal Training Program. At the age of eighteen, Marian was hired to teach at Windsor #10 and two years later to Windsor #4. She was united in marriage to Herman Helgerson on October 12, 1940 at St. Peter Lutheran Church. In March they moved to a farm west of West Union and in 1941, they moved to a farm northeast of Hawkeye. In 1943, their daughter, Dorothy Ann was born. Three years later a son, Gary Herman joined the family. In 1948, they purchased a farm east of West Union and it is still home. In 1948, Marian returned to teaching, attending college at night and in the summers. In 1956, Randy was born. After a couple of years Marian returned to teaching. In 1962, she graduated from Upper Iowa University at Fayette and taught for twenty years until retirement in 1980. Needing something to replace teaching, volunteering was the answer. She began taping books for the deaf, working two days a week at the hospital; she was active in church teaching Sunday school and held many offices in the E.L.C.W. Marian enjoyed crafts and was an avid reader. She was a member of the Lutheran Brotherhood and Retired Teachers. Survivors include her children, Dorothy (Larry) Reiling of Hawkeye, Gary Helgerson of Elkader and Randy Helgerson of Elgin; five grandchildren, Bryan (Julie) Reiling, Lincoln, NE, Brenda Reiling, Springfield, IL, Erik (Janelle) Helgerson Waukon, Joel (Sara) Helgerson, Ft. Benning, GA and Ryan Helgerson, Elkader; four great-grandchildren, Nathan and Madelyn Helgerson and Laura and Colton Reiling and a sister, Violet Moorman, Cedar Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1993; her twin sister, Marguerite Hyman and a brother, Herbert Schatz.

Myrtle Conboy Niemeyer, 90, died Monday, July 10, 2006, at the Elkader Care Center, Elkader, following a long illness. Myrtle was the eldest daughter of John and Anna (Samp) Conboy, born icon January 16, 1916, in Volga City. Two sisters died in infancy. Her husband, Norbert Niemeyer, preceded her in death on December 13, 1995. She is survived by her sister, Kathleen Dougherty of Red Wing, Minnesota, formerly of Anamosa. She is also survived by five children: John and his wife Mary Fran of Egan, Minnesota, Ann Glenn and her husband Gary of DeKalb, Illinois, Mary Harstad and her husband Don of Elkader, Nicholas of San Francisco, California, and Susan Bryant of Austin, Texas; twelve grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; three nephews and one niece. She was graduated from Volga City High School and worked in the telephone office there and in Strawberry Point until her marriage. On May 17, 1938, she and Norb were united in marriage and began their married life in Elkader. In the community, she was an active member of Proteus Club, Central Community Hospital Auxiliary and St. Joseph's Catholic Church Guild. Myrtle was instrumental in the establishment of the Carter House Museum and was a founding member of the first Elkader Chapter of Questers. An avid antique collector and interior decorator, she was employed by McTaggart's Furniture Store, The Sunshine Shop and The Buttery. In accordance with her wishes, her body was donated to the University of Iowa Medical School.

Helen Lauve Diers, 85, of Elkader, Iowa, died Sunday, July 9, 2006, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, Iowa, following a brief illness. She was born icon on January 28, 1921, in St. Olaf, to Alfred and Nettie (Lauve) Knudson. She was baptized and confirmed at Norway Lutheran Church. She graduated from Elkader High School and attended Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN. Helen was united in marriage to the love of her life, Vernon William Diers on September 21, 1940, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center. Together they farmed on the Diers family farm in Clayton Center and welcomed three children – Thomas, Richard and Mary. They also opened their home and lives to numerous foster children and young adults, including Ted Heimann, Leo Conway and Charles Adams. During their time farming, Helen mastered many talents including gourmet cooking, refinishing furniture, was a master gardener winning numerous ribbons at the Clayton County Fair and a wonderful hostess to people from all over the world. After moving to Elkader in 1966, Helen enjoyed working at the Checkerboard café downtown. Helen and Vernon traveled the world, played card with friends and family and cheered on the Chicago Cubs. After Vernon passed away in 1986, she volunteered at the Elkader Mealsite, chauffeured friends and enjoyed puzzles, trivia games that tested her mind, knitting, crocheting, quilting, and framing – she mastered them all. She is survived by her son, Richard (Lorna) Diers, Okinawa, Japan; daughter, Mary (Jay) Satinsky, Gurnee, IL; daughter-in-law Elaine Diers, Elkader, IA; her brother, Clyde Knudson, Dallas, TX; grandchildren Barbara Satinsky Erradi, Marianne Satinsky and Jeri Satinsky, Mike (Amy) Diers, Steve (Beth) Diers, and Kristine Diers; and five and 8/9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vernon; son Tom and foster sons Leo and Charles.

Oscar Helmer Onsager was born icon on June 5, 1924, the son of Albert and Ida (Hagen) Onsager in rural Winneshiek County near Decorah. He was raised and educated in Allamakee County, attending rural schools. He operated a gas station in Waukon for a short time. On January 19, 1948, he was united in marriage to Harriet L. Telford in Decorah. Together they resided in Decorah where he worked for a furniture and flooring store. In 1970 they moved to Manchester and owned and operated Model Paint, Glass, and Wallpaper Store. He was well-known for his custom framing business. Oscar retired in 1999. Oscar died at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester on Thursday, July 6, 2006, following a brief illness. He was eighty-two years of age. Oscar was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church. He enjoyed picture framing, camping, and cards. Survivors include his wife, Harriet of Manchester; two daughters, Jacklyn (Jerry) Rosendahl of Owatonna, Minnesota, and Judy (Bruce) Hamilton of Yuma, Arizona; four grandchildren, Tina Rosendahl and fiancé R.J. Schmitz, Tammi Goetzke and fiancé Michael Brochman, Scott Hamilton, and Jenifer Winter and husband Paul; ten great-grandchildren, Laura, Heather, and Jacob Reinardy, Jessica, Holly, and Noah Goetzke, Max Brochman, Jordan Jacobs, Kendra Hudson, and Cheyenne Hamilton; a brother Arnold (Josie) Onsager of Waukon; a sister-in-law, Irene Onsager of Stetsonville, Wisconsin; and numerous nieces and nephews. Oscar was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Ida Onsager; two sisters, Martha Carlsborg and Ethel Onsager; and one brother, Norman Onsager.

Memorials may be directed to the Good Neighbor Home Alzheimers Wing, United Methodist Church, Manchester, Iowa or the donor's choice.

Clara Marie Seifert Wolf, 96, Elkader, died Tuesday, July 4, 2006, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, following a sudden illness. She was born icon in Presho, South Dakota, on July 18, 1909, to John and Emilie (Bauer) Kainz. Clara attended country schools in Volga Township and one year at St. Joseph's Parochial School in Elkader. She was united in marriage to Herold Seifert on October 2, 1930. Herold died March 12, 1963. She married Reynold Wolf on June 30, 1975, and he died January 17, 1979. She was a nursing assistant at Central Community Hospital in Elkader for thirteen years. Clara was a homemaker who loved celebrating her birthday, flowers, spending time with family and friends and traveling with the Heritage Club. She was a member of the Volga Legion Auxilliary. Survivors include three step-daughters, Mary (Joe) Wachtel, Monica (Rod) Pennington, Janie (Steve) Schetgen; four step-grandchildren; twenty-four nieces and nephews and one sister, Eleanor Becker, Elkader. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; three brothers, Rudy, Leo, Ernest Kainz; one sister, Josephine Goedken; one step-daughter, Margaret Wolf and one nephew, John Becker.

Joann Mary Helle, 77, of Colesburg died July 4, 2006, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home of an extended illness. She was born icon September 2, 1928, at rural Colesburg where she grew up, the daughter of Ray and Hilda (Bruggeman) Hogan. She was educated and graduated from Colesburg High School. Joann was united in marriage to James Helle on October 17, 1950. They were married fifty-five years. To this union five children were born. Joann was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Colesburg. During her lifetime, along with being a full time homemaker and a partner in their farming operation, she was also employed by Ertls in Dyersville and Clayton County DHIA. Joann loved family activities, especially time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed golfing, crocheting, cards, traveling with friends and Hawkeye parties. She is survived by her husband James Helle of Colesburg, children, Barbara (Layton) Hansel of Greeley, Sharon (Michael) Schmelzer of Garnavillo, Gordon (LouAnn) Helle of Elkader, Sandy (Randy) Backes of Edgewood and Steve (Shelly) Helle, of Colesburg; sixteen grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; three brothers, Vincent (Helen) Hogan of Luxemburg, Jack (Carolyn) Hogan of Colesburg and Phil (Deanna) Hogan of New Vienna and a sister, Ellen (Laverne) Domeyer of Petersburg. Joann was preceded in death by her parents.

Mayme Loretta Henderson Landt, 93, Luana, Iowa, died Sunday, July 2, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Center, Postville, Iowa, from old age. Mayme was born icon July 15, 1912, on a farm near Volney, Iowa, to Clarence and Jessie (Stafford) Henderson. She was baptized on August 16, 1914, by Rev. James B. Bird in the Methodist Church. She was later confirmed in the Lutheran Faith by Rev. Henry Kumpf in 1936, at St. John Lutheran Church in Luana. She attended Walnut Grove Country School, rural Monona and graduated with the class of 1930, from Monona High School. On November 6, 1934, she was united in marriage to Harvey Landt at Waukon, Iowa, by Rev. R. L. Van Nice. Four children were born icon to this union. Mayme and Harvey farmed for many years on their farm south of Luana, moving to Luana in 1961. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and St. John ELCW. Mayme also taught Sunday school and Bible school for many years. Survivors include three sons, LeRoy (Judith) Landt, Cedar Rapids, Wayne (Martha) Landt, Luana, Don L. (Dorothy) Landt, Palo; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and two sisters-in-law, Rosella Henderson, Madison, WI, and Katie Henderson, Monona. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harvey, on September 6, 1989; one daughter in infancy; four brothers, Harold, Leon, Lester “Scotty”, Marlin “Doc” Henderson and three sisters, Thelma Bentien, Frances Engelhardt and Gretchen Wiethorn.

Ellen Mary Voss, 95, Monona, Iowa, died Thursday, October 26, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Center, Postville, Iowa, Following a brief illness. Ellen was born icon on March 14, 1911, in rural Monona, Iowa, to Albert and Emma (Macha) Holly. She attended country school through the eighth grade.

She was united in marriage to Arthur Alvin Voss on January 20, 1931, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Monona. To this union one daughter, Edna was born. Ellen was a homemaker and helped Arthur with chores on their farm.

Survivors include one daughter, Edna Schmelzer, Monona; four grandchildren, David (Denise) Schmelzer, Postville, Linda (Don) Gullickson, Monona, Darrell (Deb) Schmelzer, Ossian, Allen (Tali) Schmelzer, Azore Islands; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and two brothers, Kenneth (Helen) Holly, Cedar Rapids and Louis (Carole) Holly, Monticello.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur, on May 1, 2002; son-in-law, Lorin Schmelzer; granddaughter, Lisa Schmelzer; great-grandson, Adam Gullickson; sister, Marjorie Kliefoth and brother, James Holly.
