Frances Jane Ehrhardt

Frances Jane Ehrhardt, a long-time resident of Elkader, died at age 98 in her Iowa City home on Thursday, October 26, 2006. A memorial service will be held in her honor at the Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 1:30 PM. A reception will be held in the church basement immediately afterwards until 3:30. Memorials will go to the Elkader Historical Society Endowment Fund. Mrs. Ehrhardt was born icon on April 24, 1908, in Milford, Iowa, to John S. Winton and Jane Woods Winton and was raised there. She followed her sister, Eleanor Winton Gilje, as an early female graduate of the Iowa State University in Ames and later to Elkader. After several years as a high school teacher, she was united in marriage on May 27, 1938, to Leroy J. Ehrhardt who preceded her in death by exactly four years. She lived in Elkader for sixty-seven years until moving to Iowa City recently to be closer to her family. Mrs. Ehrhardt took an active part in various church activities and manifested a keen interest in community affairs. She was a quietly effective leader in her organizations. Collecting antiques and preserving Elkader's history was a passion for her. She was a co-founder and benefactor of the Elkader Historical Society and worked for the placement of historic Elkader buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Mrs. Ehrhardt is survived by her three loving sons, Charles and wife Judy of Tallahassee, Florida, James and wife Pamela of Iowa City, and Louis of Scottsdale, Arizona. She delighted in her five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Words originally written for her grandmother are appropriate. "No one who knew her will forget her, and to each one her memory is something dear and lovely: an influence toward making them more kindly and helpful, more faithful and true. She is gone from among us, but she has left us new ideals, new inspirations; she will live in our hearts and in our lives."

Oscar William Alvin Troester

Oscar William Alvin Troester, 89, died Monday, October 23, 2006, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, Guttenberg, following a brief illness. He was born icon February 7, 1917, in Jefferson Township, Clayton Co., IA to Gustav and Louise (Brase) Troester. He attended country school through the eighth grade. He was baptized on May 24, 1918, at St. John Lutheran Church in Guttenberg by Pastor Janzig and confirmed April 9, 1933, at St. John by Pastor William Adix.

He was united in marriage to LaVerne Mohning on December 29, 1943, at Peace Lutheran Church in Clayton. Three children were born icon to this union. Oscar worked for Roverud Construction for thirteen years. They farmed in the Guttenberg and Elkader area for a few years until purchasing their present farm in 1954. Farming and family was Oscar's life and his devotion was ever present. He was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center where he served on the church council. He presently was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garnavillo. He served his community well as a volunteer for the Garnavillo Fire Dept., 4-H Leader, Clayton Co. Fair Board and Farm Bureau member. When he was able Oscar enjoyed fishing and hunting. Attending farm auctions was his passion. His love for music was evident as he would be heard singing while doing chores. Oscar's grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very special to him.

Survivors include his wife, LaVerne Troester, Garnavillo; his children, Thelma (Thomas) Madden, Rockwell, Donna (John) Martin, Mason City and Mark (Rondee) Troester, Garnavillo; nine grandchildren, Jason (Amy) Madden, Andrew (Julie) Martin, Christopher (Mandi) Martin, Steven Martin, Amos Troester, Tavi (Mark LeDuc) Madden-LeDuc, Jenna (Brian) Powers, Elizabeth (Scott) Hockey and Anna Troester; three great-grandchildren, Kirk Martin, Kaleb Martin and Laynie Madden; two brothers, LeVerne (Lorna) Troester and Roland (Sharon) Troester, Guttenberg; a sister, Berdina (Howard) Duwe, Guttenberg; a sister-in-law, Barbara Mohning, Garnavillo and several nieces and nephews.

Oscar was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Loren Mohning.

Leighton William Smith

Leighton William Smith, 66, Boonville, MO, formerly of Postville, IA, died Thursday, October 19, 2006, at Riverdell Care Center, Boonville, MO, following a short illness. He was born icon on September 25, 1940, at rural Luana, to Leslie Vernone and Jessie (Schultz) Smith. Leighton graduated from Luana High School in 1958. He was a member of the United States National Guard.

On June 14, 1972, Leighton was united in marriage to Linda Suckow at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, IA. They farmed north of Luana for many years. He also worked at Monona Wire until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Smith, Boonville, MO; four children, Gayla Smith, Boonville, MO, David Brainard, Luana, Debra (David) Mayne, Boonville, MO, Brenda (Ronnie) Humble, Billings, MO; nine grandchildren; one sister, Kathleen Smith, Postville and one brother, Eric Smith, Elkader.

Leighton was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Harriett Smith; two brothers, John and Richard Smith and his mother and father-in-law, Henry and Benita Suckow.

Helen Rose Whitley
April 11, 1916 - October 15, 2006
Decorah, IA, formerly of Elkader, IA

Helen Rose Whitley, 90 of Decorah, formerly of Elkader, died Sunday morning, October 15, 2006, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, of an age related illness. She was born icon April 11, 1916 in Littleport to James Warren and Mary F. (Steen) Hughes. She graduated from high school, attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette and a cosmetology school in San Francisco, CA.

She was united in marriage to Arthur L. Whitley on June 1, 1934, in Galena, IL. Three children joined this union. She was a member of First Congregational Church in Elkader, Ladies Guild, was a past member of the church council and genealogical society.

Survivors include her daughter, Dorothy Halverson of Decorah; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two children, James Whitley and Donna Koehn; a sister, Ida Belle Glawe and a brother, Delbert Hughes.

A private memorial graveside service will be held at East Side Cemetery in Elkader.

LaVon Cheeseman
September 23, 1921 - October 15, 2006

LaVon Cheeseman, 85, of Elkader, passed away peacefully October 15, 2006, at the Elkader Care Center, Elkader, following a long illness. She was born icon daughter of Herman and Elsie (Freitag) Kruse, on September 23, 1921, on a farm near Garber. She was raised and educated in the area, graduating from Elkader High School. She lived her entire life in this area.

LaVon was united in marriage to Robert E. Cheeseman on July 11, 1940, at Clermont, IA. Two daughters were born icon to this union. They farmed together near Elkader all of their married life. She enjoyed fishing, dancing, sewing and cooking.

Left to cherish her memory is her two daughters, Lyneen Blate, Elkader, and Kay Schneider and her husband, Russ, Storm Lake; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

LaVon was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert E. Cheeseman and her sister, Indamora Mae Martin.

Eugene Frank Kramer

Eugene Frank Kramer, 73, passed through death to eternal life with Christ on October 14, 2006, at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics after a short illness. Gene was born icon the son of Clarence and Frieda (Lucht) Kramer on April 8, 1933, in Wellesley, Ontario, Canada. At the age of fourteen, Gene’s family moved to the United States. He graduated from high school in Reedsburg, Wisconsin. He then attended Concordia College in Milwaukee and then Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, where he was ordained a Lutheran Minister of the LC-MS in 1958. After many years of ministerial service in Sumner, Iowa and Waterloo, Iowa, Gene attended the University of Iowa Law School where he graduated in 1983. After graduation, he moved to Monona, Iowa to practice law. He has also assisted with various pastoral duties through the years at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona. Gene had recently announced his retirement from his law practice.

Gene loved God’s wonderful outdoor creation and had a vigor and appreciation for all things he experienced – big and small. He especially loved the change of seasons and the beauty of color in the fall. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cheering for the Hawkeyes and Cubs, and traveling. Gene also brightened many a day with his story telling and robust laughter. He had an uncanny talent to be able to recall a story and relate it to almost any event.

Gene is survived by his daughter, Deborah (Dennis) Peterson of North Liberty, Iowa; sons, David (Mary) Kramer of Neola, Iowa and Daniel (Marcie) Kramer of Payson, Illinois; stepson, Christopher (De Ann) Decker of Ankeny, Iowa; stepdaughters Jennifer (John) Forgey of Kansas City and Annie (Keith) Whittemore of Waterloo, Iowa; brothers Elmer of Toronto, Ontario, Leonard of Port Colbourne, Ontario and Herman (Judy) of Lake View, Iowa; sisters Lois (Gordon) Clifford of Port Colbourne, Ontario and Helen Henschel of Harlan, Iowa; his first wife, Connie Kramer, of Waterloo, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.

Gene is preceded in death by his wife Jo Ann, brothers Walter and Robert, infant brother Andrew and infant grandson Jason.

Rest in peace good and faithful servant.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, United Methodist Church, Monona, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Monona, American Cancer Society or Lutheran World Relief.
