Florence E. Gossman, 88, of Elkader, died Sunday, August 13, 2006, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader, following a brief illness. She was born icon on a farm in Read Township to George and Anna (Uecker) Lembke on August 21, 1917. She attended Denmark country school.

In 1936, she married Jonard Fette to which one daughter, JoAnn was born. She received her GED diploma in 1973, from Northeast Iowa Technical School in Calmar. Florence married Valmah “Dutch” Gossman in 1965. She loved to garden especially caring for her flowers, both at the house and later her small flower garden at her apartment. She enjoyed bingo and a Sunday afternoon of cards with her brother and sister-in-law and other friends. She also enjoyed having her grandchildren visit and in later years her great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, JoAnn (Dennis) Butikofer, Elkader; two grandchildren, DeAnn (Greg) Banks, Paola, KS and Jamie (Liz) Butikofer, Demorest, GA; six great-grandchildren, Emma and Sarah Banks and Jacob, Madison, Samuel and Sydney Butikofer and a sister-in-law, Roslyn Lembke, Elkader.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Dutch Gossman and her brothers, Elmer and his wife Carrie, Roy and his wife Hattie and Lester Lembke.

Mary Ann Besler

Mary Ann was born icon on December 23, 1930, near Arlington, Iowa, the daughter of William Harold and Martha Opal (Christ) Manchester. She was raised and educated in the area attending country school. Mary Ann was employed and cooked for various restaurants and was noted for her English rolls and baking. On January 22, 1972, Mary Ann was united in marriage to Charles W. Besler and together they farmed and lived near Dundee. She enjoyed being a wife, baking, cooking, crafts, and needlework. Mary Ann died on Thursday, August 3, 2006, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home in Strawberry Point, following a brief illness. She was seventy-five years of age. Survivors include her husband, Charles W. Besler of Dundee; a sister, Beulah Mae (Glen) Fuhrman of Ferryville, Wisconsin; two brothers, Lewis (Carnel) Manchester of Strawberry Point and Ronald (Maye) Manchester of Edgewood; and several nieces and nephews. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Darlene Wiegert; and one brother, Marlin Manchester.

Louise A. Franks, 86, Manchester, Iowa, died Friday, October 27, 2006, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa, following a brief illness. Louise was born icon April 17, 1920, in Masonville, Iowa, to Edward and Cassie (Green) Wilson. She attended country schools in the Buck Creek and Hopkinton area. She was united in marriage to Lester W. Franks on November 23, 1937, in Manchester. Seven children were born icon to this union. Louise was a homemaker and later in life, worked as a waitress at several restaurants in Manchester. She loved to bake and volunteered her time for church and the hospital. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Sands, Manchester, Gloria Rodriquez, Houston, TX; five sons, Harold Franks, Manchester, Laverne (Donna) Franks, Cedar Rapids, Michael (Sandra) Franks, Runnells, Randy (Dixie) Franks, Manchester, Charles (Paula) Franks, Ely; one sister, Carol Peyton, Manchester; four brothers, Clair Wilson, Cedar Rapids, Dick Wilson, Waubeek, Don (Avis) Wilson, Coggon, Dean (JoAnn) Wilson, Manchester; thirty grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Lester, on December 29, 2001; three sisters, Irene Saunders, Betty Moorman, Cora Berg and six brothers, Steve Wilson, Andy Wilson, Ed Wilson, Blaine Wilson, Larry Wilson and one in infancy.

Carol Faye Gates

Carol Faye Gates, age 65 of Walford, died Friday, February 4, 2005 at Riverside Community Hospital, Riverside, CA. following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, February 17, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Mike Townsley officiating. Burial will be in the Ohio Cemetery, rural Ladora. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.

She is survived by her husband Kenneth; her four children, Dennis (Pam) Gates of Riverside, CA, Jeff (Jennifer) Gates of Hemet, CA, Carolyn (Joe) Sharp of Norway, IA and Bill (Laurie) Gates of Watkins, IA; four grandchildren, Kenneth (Lacy) Gates of Riverside, CA, Jennifer (Jonathan) Kane of Corona, CA, Valerie Gates of Hemet, CA and Christopher Gates of Norway, IA; and two great grandchildren, Cadin Gates of Riverside, CA and Baby Kane of Corona, CA. In addition she is survived by a sister, Diana (Roger) Wiebold of Walford and a brother, Richard (Cindy) Goldammer of Homestead. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her stepfather, David Goldammer.

Carol Faye Rumple was born icon March 1, 1939 in Ladora, Iowa, the daughter of Orvin M. Rumple and Eulah Maye Nail Rumple. She graduated from Marengo High School in 1957 and married Kenneth Gates on September 27, 1958 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was a homemaker and for a time worked as a secretary and most recently as a sales clerk in the Amana Colonies gift shops.

Alma Emelia Mae Heitman

Alma Emelia Mae Heitman, age 92, died Sunday morning, January 30, 2005 at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo following an extended illness. Services: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, February 2, 2005 at Trinity United Church of Christ, rural Marengo with Rev. Lynne Bisson officiating. Burial will be in Genoa Bluff Cemetery, rural Marengo. Friends may call from 3 to 8 P.M. Tuesday, February 1, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to Trinity United Church of Christ.

She is survived by her children, Joan Hunt of Blakesburg, Karen Ramsey (David) of Amana, Zelda Sherman (Dick) of Ely, Phyllis Bjork of Williamsburg, Alice White (Lee) of Ankeny and Wayne Heitman of Marengo; 30 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Alice Heitman of Marengo and a sister-in-law Grace Weisskopf of Marengo. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sons, Raymond and John, a daughter, Linda Roberts, two brothers, Lester and Daniel Weisskopf, and two sisters, Vera Smith and Dorothy Richman.

Alma Emelia Mae Weisskopf was born icon October 18, 1912, in Hartford Township, rural Victor, the daughter of Daniel Ludwig and Margaret Seibert Weisskopf. She received her education in the Iowa County schools and married Ralph Heitman on June 22, 1932 in her family home. The couple farmed for many years in the Genoa Bluff area. Ralph died on May 18, 1972.

Alma was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, rural Marengo, and was a Sunday school teacher and youth leader for many years. She enjoyed playing cards and was a member of Bridge and Pepper clubs. She was a member of the Sunshine Circle and Toppers.

K. Lucille Slaymaker Gilley

K. Lucille Slaymaker Gilley, age 90 of Amana, formerly of Williamsburg, died peacefully in her sleep at her home at Lakeview Village on Friday, December 31, 2004. Funeral Services:10:00 A.M. Tuesday, January 4, 2005 at Trinity United Church of Christ, rural Marengo with Rev. Jackie Tjarks officiating. Burial will be in Pilot Grove Cemetery, rural Williamsburg. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Monday, January 3, 2005 at St. Mary’s Parish Hall in Williamsburg. Memorials may be contributed to Trinity United Church of Christ. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.

She is survived by two sons, Tom Slaymaker and wife Maralyn of Williamsburg, and Dick Slaymaker and wife Colleen of Deep River; a daughter, Nancy Roberts and husband Robert of Williamsburg; two stepsons, Curt and Steve Gilley; nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren and a sister Neva Cook and husband Ken of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Arnold Slaymaker, and Dick Gilley, a grandson, Jay Slaymaker, and great-grandson, Jordan Slaymaker, two sisters, Iva Davis and Maxine Fitkin, and a brother, Don Thomas.

Kathryn Lucille Thomas was born icon June 19, 1914 in rural Williamsburg, the daughter of Albert and Kathryn Meier Thomas. She received her education in the Iowa County schools and attended Williamsburg High School. Lucille married Arnold Slaymaker on September 24, 1934 at her parents’ home. He died May 23, 1966. She married Dick Gilley on November 22, 1967 in Williamsburg. He died March 17, 1996.

Lucille was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, rural Marengo, and the RSVP Club. She enjoyed bowling, gardening, quilting, her family and church activities and following Iowa Sports.

George R. Dillin

George R. Dillin, age 81 of Iowa Falls, formerly of Marengo, died Thursday, January 6, 2005 at Mercy-North Iowa Medical Center, Mason City, Iowa following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Monday, January10, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Delbert Rankin officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 P.M. Sunday, January 9, 2005 at the funeral home. Memorials may be contributed to the charity of the donor’s choice.

He is survived by a son Winston Hahn and wife LaVonne of Atoka, TN; two daughters, Linda York and husband Lester of Iowa Falls and Johnette Timm and husband Gary of Guernsey; six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren; a brother, John Bruce Dillin of Marengo and two sisters, Odena Hladky of Guernsey and Cheribel C. Schmidt of Victor. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Kathleen, and a brother, Charles “Bob” Dillin in 1998.

George Raymond Dillin was born icon May 8, 1923 in Marengo, Iowa the son of Cecil and Dolly Stucker Dillin. He graduated from Marengo High School in 1941. He married Kathleen B. McKay on June 17, 1956 in Marengo. She died June 20, 1999. George was employed as a rural mail carrier, and he worked at Collins Radio during World War II. He was a maintenance engineer at Iowa Valley schools and then at the Marengo Memorial Hospital. He has made his home with his daughter in Iowa Falls for the last 3 ½ years. George was an avid woodworker.

Ruby E. Fatland

Ruby E. Fatland, age 90, a longtime resident of Marengo, residing in Cedar Rapids with her daughter and husband, Karen and Ron Jacobs, was called to her eternal home on January 7, 2005. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at First Lutheran Church, rural Conroy with Pastor Jackie Tjarks officiating. Burial will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Monday, January 10, 2005 at Kloster Funeral Home in Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to First Lutheran Church or the American Heart Association.

She is survived by two daughters, Deborah Honeycutt and husband John of North Carolina, and Karen Jacobs and husband Ron of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Curt Bean and wife Amy of Marion, Lori Kelchen of Cedar Rapids, Craig Bean and wife Alicia of Cedar Rapids, and Kelli Cartier of North Carolina; five great-grandchildren, Sydney and Harper Bean of Marion, Criox and Cody Kelchen of Cedar Rapids, and Colin Sandberg of Williamsburg. Also surviving are three brothers, Marvin Berhow of Missouri, Richard Berhow of Washington State, and James Berhow of Kentucky and two sisters, Frances Romsey of Gilbert, IA and Betty Eller of Nevada, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Hector, three brothers, Lowell, Wesley and Walter “Jack” Berhow, and two sisters, Marjorie Hills and Grace Linder.

Ruby Evelyn Berhow was born icon March 29, 1914 in Worth County, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Mable Berhow. She attended the Worth County schools and married Hector L. Fatland on October 26, 1938.

Ruby was a fun-loving and very caring person. She never knew a stranger. She was very active in her church, which she found very comforting. She was active in the community and along with her friend, Ethel, kept Marengo weed-free. She was instrumental in establishing the Iowa Valley School lunch program. She worked in several restaurants in Marengo and was best remembered as the “pie lady”. She loved life and her family and was always there for them.

Now it is time to give this beautiful soul to our Lord for safe-keeping. She will be greatly missed. Thank you for being our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. All our hearts go with you. ‘Till we meet again

Cara Amber Smith

Cara Amber Smith, daughter of Joe and Kelly Smith, was stillborn Thursday evening, January 20, 2005 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Monday, January 24, 2005, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call after 9:00 A.M. Monday until service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be contributed to the St. Luke’s Birth Care Center in Cedar Rapids.

She is survived by her parents, Joe and Kelly Rudin Smith; paternal grandmother, Rose Smith, and maternal grandparents, Gene and Phillis Rudin, all of Marengo, and great-grandmothers, Cora Schoenfelder of Van Horne, Alice Rudin of Marengo, and Ruby Ryder of Sigourney. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Larry Smith, and great-grandparents, Paul Rudin, Adolph Schoenfelder, Ollie Ryder and John and Doris Smith.

Carl Fred Ehrle

Carl Fred Ehrle, age 85 of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Amana, died Monday, January 17, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following an extended illness. Private funeral services will be held at a later date. Public visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille of Cedar Rapids; four sons, Henry William (Isabelle) and Ronald (Marilyn) of Cedar Rapids, Steven (Shirley) of Marion, and Gary (Christy) of Belle Plaine; a daughter, Nancy VonAhsen (Larry) of Cedar Rapids; ten grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and a sister, Wilma Novy of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Henry.

Carl Fred Ehrle was born icon January 25, 1919 in Amana, the son of Peter George and Louise Goerler Ehrle. He received his education in the Amana schools. Carl married Lucille Puegner on October 13, 1938 in Marengo. He was employed at the Amana Woolen Mills for many years. Carl was a member of the Amana Community Church and he enjoyed traveling with his wife.
