Fern L. McKusker age 86 of Marengo, died peacefully on Monday, December 14, 2009 surrounded by her loving family. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 19, 2009, First United Methodist Church, Marengo with Rev. Jim Davis and Rev. Katie Dawson officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, December 18, 2009 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Fern is survived by her husband Carroll “Buck” of almost 63 years; 5 children, Joann Cuppy (Gayle) of Kalona, James McKusker (Donna) of Burlington, WI, Julia Phillips (Dave) of Marengo, Jeffrey McKusker (Lori) of Mead, CO, and Jerome “Jerry” McKusker of Marengo; 14 grandchildren, Stephen (Jan), Brian (Jen) and Heather Cuppy, Kevin, Karen, Krystal and Kyle McKusker, Stacy (Mike) Pfister, Cari (Stoney) Kriegel, Valerie and Gabrielle Phillips, Jacob and Karly McKusker, and Jennifer McKusker; and 9 great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Jacob and Benjamin Cuppy, Hailey and Kaitlyn Rohm, Dakota Cuppy, and Hannah, Cole and Rhet Pfister. She is also survived by a brother, Russell Tuttle (Mary) of Malcom, two sisters, Edna Marie Shepherd of Williamsburg and Delores Schmidt of Deep River and several nieces and nephews. Fern was preceded in death by her parents, 4 brothers, Howard, Earl, Richard, and Bernard Jr., and a sister Vera Tuttle.
Fern Lucille Tuttle was born June 28, 1923 in Victor, Iowa, the daughter of Bernard and Edna Mae Hiner Tuttle. She graduated from Victor High School in 1942 and went to work as a telephone operator for the Victor Phone Company. Fern married Carroll M. McKusker on February 10, 1947 in Lancaster, MO. She left the phone company and focused her energy on becoming an excellent homemaker. Fern was a member of the Koszta Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She also was a member of the Marengo and Ladora American Legion Auxiliaries, and the Iowa River Good Sams Club. Fern enjoyed teaching her grandchildren how to quilt, play card games and sports, especially basketball and softball. Fern was a state champion horse shoe pitcher. In later years she enjoyed bowling and talking with her many friends and family members on the phone.

Vernon E. Garringer age 82 of Montezuma formerly of Parnell, died Saturday, December 12, 2009 at the Mayflower Home in Grinnell. Funeral Service: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 16, 2009, First United Methodist Church, Marengo with Rev. Ben Wilson officiating. Interment will be in Yankee Point Cemetery, Parnell with military honors. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Vernon is survived by a son, Scott Vernon Garringer (Pamela) of Hope, Arkansas; two daughters, Barbara Jean Weldon (David) of Parnell and Sandra Kay Maddocks (James) of Montezuma; 8 grandchildren, Jamie Thompson, Cary Dischler, Jon Werner, Kennon Harter, Tonch Weldon, Ginger Russel, Crystal Wolf, and Michael Garringer; 25 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, James C. Garringer (Jeanne) and William L. Garringer (Darlyn) both of Williamsburg; and a sister Betty Van Dee of Vining. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1990, his parents, 4 brothers, Howard Brown, and Keith, Orville, and Ralph Garringer.
Vernon Eugene Garringer was born July 28, 1927 in Parnell, Iowa, the son of Carl L. and Esta M. Brown Garringer. He attended the Iowa County schools. He married Marilyn Kirkpatrick on September 4, 1950 in Deep River. He served in the U.S. Army as a corporal in Korea and Japan from 1950-1952 and received a purple heart. In earlier years he was a member of the Methodist Church in Williamsburg. He worked for Winborns & Swift Feeds for 31 years and Nissley Auto for 9 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, camping, and gardening. Vernon loved his family and will be deeply missed by them.

James E. Kriegel, age 84 of Malcom, died Friday, December 11, 2009 at the Mayflower Home in Grinnell. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, December 15, 2009, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn. Visitation: 3 to 7 P.M. Monday, December 14, 2009 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn where a Scripture Service will be held at 7:00 P.M. Memorials may be contributed to the Alzheimer’s’ Foundation, the American Cancer Society or Calvary Cemetery Association, Brooklyn.
He is survived by thirteen children, Carmen Kay Cordes (Marvin) of Guernsey, Rosemary Neighbors (Gordon) of Malcom, Gary Kriegel (Becky) of Malcom, Kathy Whitsell (Gary) of Chelsea, Connie Buffum (Jim) of Grinnell, Debbie Hargis (Caleb) of New Sharon, Cindy Schmidt of Montezuma, Don Kriegel (Christy) of Malcom, Roger Kriegel (Valerie) of Deep River, Janet Plants (Ron) of Brooklyn, Angie Roller (Kevin) of Holiday Lake, Vickie Bunn (Mike) of Brooklyn, and Janine Hawkins (Dave) of Brooklyn; 46 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 2 sons-in-law Brad Schafbuch of Victor and Mike Ahrens of Grinnell; 3 brothers, Lawrence, Glen Joe (Linda) and Kenny, all of Brooklyn; and 2 sisters, Gladys Healey of Toledo and Mary Jane Rich (Tom) of TN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carmen in March of this year, two sons, Elmer and Danny Kriegel, 2 daughters Shirley Ahrens and Valerie Schafbuch, a grandson Todd Allen Kriegel, a daughter-in-law Dawn Kriegel, nine brothers, Lloyd, Richard, Bill, Melvin, Gerald, Wayne, Louis, Lyle and Elmer, and two sisters, Stella Henle and Marge Henle.
James Edward Kriegel was born March 30, 1925 in Poweshiek County, Iowa, the son of John and Mary Roth Kriegel. He attended the Poweshiek County schools and married Carmen Cummings on June 22, 1946. He was a life-long farmer in Poweshiek County. He enjoyed playing cards, tinkering with his John Deere tractors and driving his 1931 Model A Ford. He also enjoyed traveling, bird watching and family get-togethers. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his grandchildren. Jim was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn, and the National Catholic Order of Foresters.

Delores Jean Collum Lacaeyse, age 74 of rural Montezuma, passed away, Monday, December 7, 2009 at the Montezuma Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a lengthy illness. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 12, 2009, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn, with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn. Visitation: 5 to 7 P.M. Friday, December 11, 2009 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn with a Scripture Service at 7 P.M. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Marvin F. Lacaeyse; four children, Gene (Mary) of Grinnell, Carol Meseck (Gary) of Sioux Rapids, Carl (Jocelyn) of Malcom and Dean of Montezuma; 12 grandchildren Kelly Kibbee of Newton, Tim Kibbee (Kris) of Grinnell, Joshua Lacaeyse (Julie) of Grinnell, Andy Meseck of Storm Lake, Justin, Billy and Jennifer Meseck all of Sioux Rapids, Nick Lacaeyse of Malcom, Joel Lacaeyse (Jessie) of Montezuma, Alex Lacaeyse of Montezuma, Cassie Minnaert (Nate) of Brooklyn, and Melissa Quiroz of Spencer; and 11 great-grandchildren, Sam, Madelyn, and Max Kibbee of Grinnell, Kinze Lacaeyse of Montezuma, Antonio Meseck of Sioux Rapids, Olivia Upton of Ruthven, Jeffrey, Sofia, and Parker of Spencer and Karsyn and Karagyn Minnaert of Brooklyn. Also surviving are four brothers, Dave Collum (Mary Jo) of Brooklyn, Bob Collum (Marilyn) also of Brooklyn, Jim Collum of Grinnell and Tom Collum (Terry) of Scotch Grove; two sisters, Joyce Watson (George) of Marengo and MaryAnn Plants (Jim) of Brooklyn; a sister-in-law, Donna Collum of DeWitt and a brother-in-law Don Brau of Guernsey.
Delores was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Joseph and Paul a sister Pat Brau, two nephews Mike Collum and Raymond Brau, and a sister-in-law Evelyn Donachie.
Delores Jean Collum was born March 3, 1935 in Poweshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Snook Collum. She attended the Poweshiek County schools and graduated from Brooklyn High School with the class of 1953. Delores married Marvin Fred Lacaeyse on January 15, 1954 at St. Patrick’s Rectory in Brooklyn. To this union four children were born. The couple farmed near Montezuma for over 55 years. Besides being a homemaker, Delores enjoyed helping on the farm and keeping a vegetable and flower garden. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and reading. Her special passions were her children and grandchildren. She was a member of the Social Circle Club and St. Patrick’s Altar and Rosary Society. In later years she enjoyed traveling with her sister MaryAnn with the Grinnell Bank Tourist Club.

Sandra S. Bine age 72 of Marengo, died Monday, December 7, 2009 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha. Memorial Service: 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 12, 2009, First United Methodist Church, Marengo with Rev. Delbert Rankin officiating. Inurnment will be in Koszta Cemetery, rural Marengo. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, December 11, 2009 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha.
Sandra is survived by her husband Laurence R. Bine; her children, Laurie Madoerin (Dennis O’Donnell) of Marengo, Diane Shawver (Dave) of Tipton and Daniel Bine (Theresa) of Marengo; 7 grandchildren, Shelby Dains (Bradley), Sarah Madoerin, Jacob Madoerin, Logan Bine, Amelia Shawver, Jessica Bine and Matthew Shawver; and 2 great-grandchildren Kaylin and Avery Dains. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Jeffrey Bine, 2 brothers E. Leroy Reinhard and E. Lynn Reinhard, two nieces Alayne Reinhard and Lynette Bomar, and a sister-in-law Marilyn Hasselmann.
Sandra Sue Reinhard was born September 24, 1937 in Gladbrook, Iowa, the daughter of Earl H. and Lora Oaks Reinhard. She graduated from Gladbrook High School in 1955 and married Laurence R. Bine on June 17, 1956 in Gladbrook. Following her marriage, Sandra was employed for a year as a secretary for DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago. They eventually settled in Marengo where Sandra was employed for 20 years in the Iowa County Clerk of Court office. She retired January 31, 2002. She continued to work as a volunteer in the Clerk’s office until April of 2009.

Donald “Don” Schluter, age 87 of Blairstown died Sunday, December 6, 2009 at his home. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Friday December 11, Grace Lutheran Church, Blairstown with Rev. David P. Remfer officiating. Burial will be in the Koszta Cemetery, Marengo. Visitation: 4-7 P.M. Thursday December 10, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Don is survived by his wife Dorothy of 58 years; three sons: Donald, David, and Daniel of Blairstown; two daughters: Darlene Lenoch of Blairstown and Dorene Wilcox (Kenneth) of Marshalltown; three grandchildren: Chelsea and Brian Lenoch and Brad Wilcox; and three great grandchildren: Charlotte Dillon, Janelle Phillips, and Brody Wilcox; and a brother Dale Schluter of Belle Plaine.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Darlene Brecht, and Frances Louisa Schluter in infancy; a brother Albert Schluter; and a grandson Brandon Collins.
Donald Frederick Schluter was born February 24, 1922 in Koszta, Iowa, the son of Henry W. and Anna Mary Chekal Schluter. He received his primary education in the Iowa County country schools and graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1940. He married Dorothy Smith on August 25, 1951 in the Little Brown Church, Nashua, IA. Prior to his marriage he worked for Wilson Foods. After his marriage he farmed and worked as an assembler at Amana Refrigeration for ten years.
Don was an avid HAM radio operator. He was also a gifted musician and played a variety of instruments by ear. In later years, Don loved to bake cookies and pies for friends and family.

Grace Lacher Schmahl, age 91 of Marengo, died Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Thursday December 10, Saint John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery, Marengo. Visitation: 4-7 P.M. Wednesday December 9, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Grace is survived by a son Edward Lacher (Karol) of Williamsburg, IA; a daughter Rosetta Hunzelman of Orlando, Florida; five grandchildren, Terri Hunzelman, Wendy Lewis, Gary Hunzelman, Rodney Hunzelman and Marilyn Hulseburg; and seven great grandchildren, Heather Conrad, Krista and Ryan Hulseburg, Joshua and Jeremy Lewis and Hayley and Makayla Hunzelman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Max Lacher and Clarence Schmahl, a brother Arnold Andes, and two sisters, Lucille Hamos and Edna Peterson.
Grace Elphina Andes was born January 1, 1918 in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Arnold and Nellie Zeller Andes. She received her education in the Iowa County schools and married Max Lacher on November 17, 1937 in Marengo. To this union two children were born, Edward and Rosetta. Max died in 1972. Grace married Clarence Schmahl on May 1, 1979 in Marengo. He died in 1981.Grace was employed as a cook at the Homestead Inn for many years. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo.

Ethel M. Hartz, age 90 of Marengo, died Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital. Memorial Service: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 5, 2009, First Lutheran Church, rural Conroy, with Rev. Donald Keiser Dovre officiating. Inurnment: Marengo Cemetery, Marengo. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Ethel is survived by three sons; Darrell and wife Susan, David, and Maurice Jr. and wife Kathy all of Marengo; ten grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Walter Stanerson of Williamsburg, a daughter-in law, Joyce Hartz of Des Moines and a daughter-in-law Terry Hartz of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1990, a son Gary in 1978, two brothers; Ed and Art, and a sister Helen Overbaugh.
Ethel Marie Stanerson was born June 23, 1919 in Conroy, the daughter of Staner Stanerson and Helen Mae Groesbeck. She graduated from Hilton High School in 1938. Ethel married Maurice W. Hartz on February 1, 1939 at her parent’s home in Conroy.
The couple farmed for many years in Iowa County, prior to moving to Marengo. In addition to being a homemaker, Ethel was a hostess for Hoover-Valentine Funeral Home in Marengo. She was also employed by Home Decorating and the sales barn. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in rural Conroy and WELCA. She enjoyed crocheting, hardanger, working in her yard, and was a die hard Cub and Hawkeye fan.

Howard R. Williams, age 71 of North Liberty, formerly of High Amana, died Thursday, November 26, 2009 at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Monday, November 30, 2009, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Elders Kristie Yoder and Alan Trumpold officiating. Burial: High Amana Cemetery, High Amana. Friends may call from 3 to 6 P.M. Sunday, November 29, 2009, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials to the donor’s choice.
Howard is survived by his daughters; Faith Koger and husband Tony of Davenport and Amanda Wilson and husband John of Wapello; three grandchildren; Kylie Koger, Kirah Wilson, and Kari Wilson; four brothers; Levi and wife Kay Williams and Roland and wife Caroljean Williams both of Williamsburg, Clifford and Harlan Williams both of High Amana; three sisters; Marilyn Bradley of Vallego, CA, Rachel Williams of Iowa City, and Lavona Mimick and husband Frank of TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, his three brothers; Ralph, Melvin, and James Williams; a sister Gloria Racey, and a sister in infancy.
Howard Roy Williams was born January 12, 1938 in High Amana, the son of Elver Hugo Williams and Amanda Jane Puegner Williams. He attended the Amana Schools and he served for two years in the U.S. Army. Howard was a plumber and worked in the Amana and Marengo areas his entire life. He was a member of the American Legion Post 76.
