Leo “Pete” Glen VonLienen, age 80 of Marengo, IA, died Monday, November 23, 2009 at his home following a sudden illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 28, 2009, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Katie Z. Dawson officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery, Marengo. Friends may call from 5 to 7 P.M. Friday, November 27, 2009, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo.
Leo is survived by his sons; Richard “Rick” VonLienen of Cedar Rapids, Christopher VonLienen of Iowa City, and a daughter Stephanie VonLienen of North Liberty; three grandchildren; Chase VonLienen, Breanna VonLienen, and Elijah Adney; and a brother George VonLienen of Macon, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lorraine in 2005, two brothers; Dean VonLienen and Jay VonLienen, and a sister Dorothy Gardner.
Leo “Pete” VonLienen was born March 2, 1929 in rural Williamsburg, IA, the son of John VonLienen and May Schafbuch. He graduated from Hilton High School, Conroy, IA in 1946. Leo married Lorraine Eichler on February 2, 1962 in Dubuque, IA. He farmed for many years in Iowa County and was the plant manager of Standard Oil’s Blairstown, IA LP facility.
Pete was an aviator and loved to spend time flying his Cessna 170. He also enjoyed fishing with his friend Jack Banse in Alaska.

Margaret M. DeGeeter, age 93 of Brooklyn, died Sunday morning, November 22, 2009 at Brooklyn Community Estates following a brief illness. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 25, 2009, St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn where there will be a Scripture Service at 7 P.M. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by two sons, Richard and wife Diane and Roger and wife Shirley, all of Victor; a daughter, Janice Gritsch and husband Robert of Brooklyn; 5 grandchildren, Jeff Gritsch, Jeremy DeGeeter, Jason Gritsch, Shane DeGeeter and Zach DeGeeter; and 5 great-grandchildren, Shelby, Jonathan, Ashley, Danica and Avery. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Helen Wauters of Victor. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Julian on June 9, 2005, a grandson Travis DeGeeter, a sister Dorothy Claeys and a brother Achiel Wauters.
Margaret Mary Wauters was born October 22, 1916 in Poweshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Remi Wauters and Mary LaKose Wauters. She attended the Poweshiek County schools and married Julian Joseph DeGeeter on February 22, 1938 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn, Iowa. The couple farmed for many years near Hartwick. They moved to Brooklyn in 1980. Margaret was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn and the Altar and Rosary Society.

Mary Ellen "Nell" Simmons, age 105, of Williamsburg, Iowa died Monday, August 31, 2009, at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo, Iowa from complications of age. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Friday September 4, 2009 at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Williamsburg, Iowa with Father Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Williamsburg, Iowa. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, September 3, 2009 at Saint Mary's Hall in Williamsburg, Iowa where there will be a Scripture Service at 7 P.M. Memorials may be contributed to Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Williamsburg, Iowa or Safe Haven of Iowa County. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.
Nell is survived by nine nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon Simmons; her parents, Mary Ellen (Kilroy) and Michael F. Naughton; and her seven brothers and sisters: M. Clarence Naughton, Margaret Glanz, J. Walter Naughton, J. Paul Naughton, Rita Driscoll, James F. Naughton and John L. Naughton.
Mary Ellen "Nell" Simmons was born June 17, 1904 on her family farm located between Williamsburg and Parnell, Iowa, the daughter of Michael and Mary Ellen Kilroy Naughton. She graduated from Parnell Consolidated School in 1924 and was proud to have won a top spelling and penmanship award that served her well throughout her long life as she was a prolific letter writer. Nell helped her parents at home raising their large family and provided financial support to the household with housekeeping jobs in Iowa City, Iowa. She married Eldon Simmons at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Williamsburg, Iowa. In 1934 she went to work for Durr Grocery Store in Williamsburg, Iowa, and in 1936 was hired by Oren Pete Peterson owner of Peterson Drug in Williamsburg, Iowa. She had aspirations of becoming a pharmacist, and worked for Mr. Peterson and later his son-in-law, John Engel, for 47 years; retiring in 1983. Nell was proud to have put up over 100 prescriptions in one day, and was a long-time caregiver and friend to many in the Williamsburg community. She was honored as one of the Senior Grand Marshals at Williamsburg's Sesquicentennial Celebration in 2007.
Nell and her husband Eldie loved the Rocky Mountains where they vacationed for many years. Although they had no children themselves, they loved to spend time with family and their many nieces and nephews. Nell will always be remembered for her quick Irish wit and sense of humor. She was a friend to all who came in contact with her, and will be missed by her family and friends.

Harold W. Durr, age 86 of Huntington, Indiana, formerly of Williamsburg, IA died Sunday, January 24, 2010 at his home in Huntington, IN. Funeral Services: 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 26, 2010, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Katie Dawson officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Williamsburg, Iowa. The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until service time on Tuesday, January 26 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the First United Methodist Church, Marengo.
He is survived by his son Brian Durr of Goshen, IN; his daughter Debbie Burton and husband Delbert of Huntington, IN; three grandchildren, Derek Burton of Fort Wayne, IN, Dana and Daniel Burton of Huntington, IN; a brother, Ronald Durr of Solon, IA and a sister Helen King of Bullhead City, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Colleen in 2008, two sisters, Arlene Zuber and Eleanor Barnes and a brother Russell Durr.
Harold Walter Durr was born June 24, 1923 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Walter and Lottie Lyons Durr. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1942 and served four years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He received the Purple Heart for service to his country. Harold married Colleen E. Houghkirk on May 18, 1951 at the Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Harold worked in logistics as a tech writer. He began his career as a county clerk for Iowa County, then went on to be employed at Collins Radio, Linkhurt Electric, Amherst Electronics, Amana Refrigeration, Memcor E Systems and Magnavox. He was a past member of the Iburg-Poulson VFW Post #8797.

Christopher Allyn Vogt, age 42, of Marengo, went to be with his maker on Friday, January 22, 2010. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Private family services were held Wednesday, January 27, 2010. Burial: Marengo Cemetery, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established for Chris’s childrens’ educational needs.
Chris is survived by his son, Cody; his daughter Kayla; his parents John and Carol Ann Vogt, Marengo; two sisters, Kathy Brecht of Marengo and Connie Gougler (Matt) of Portland, OR; a brother Kevin Vogt (Marna) of Ladora and his grandmother, Dorothy Zuber of Amana. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William H. Zuber and Melvin and Ada Jane Vogt.
Christopher Allyn Vogt was born November 9, 1967 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of John and Carol Ann Zuber Vogt. He was raised on the family farm and quickly learned the mechanics of farming. He graduated from Iowa Valley High School with the Class of 1986. He was employed by Goodyear, Kinze Manufacturing, and presently had been a mechanic with the Amana Farms. He was skilled in many avenues of repair. He specialized in welding, sandblasting and painting. His welding business had been growing rapidly as was the sandblasting business. He enjoyed spending his evenings and weekends working on machinery for neighbors and friends. But Chris’s greatest joys were attending farm auctions and working on old trucks and cars with his son Cody. Chris was known for his great wit and his loyalty to his friends and family. He was a hard worker but always had time to sit and visit with his friends.
He will be greatly missed by his family as well as his many friends. May he finally have the peace he so longed for. He was truly loved.

Thelma A. Naughton, age 85, of Williamsburg, died Sunday, January 17, 2010 at the English Valley Care Center, North English, IA. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, January 21, 2010, St. Mary’s Catholic Church Fellowship Hall, Williamsburg, Iowa with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Williamsburg. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with a Vigil Service at 7 P.M. Memorials may be contributed to the Alzheimer’s Association or the English Valley Care Center, North English, Iowa.
Thelma is survived by a son Harry Naughton (Sharron) of Marion; two daughters, Judy Joy (Mike) of Denver, CO and Janet Clubb (Delbert) of Williamsburg; six grandchildren, Joe Naughton (Brandi) of Houston, TX, Christopher Naughton of Cedar Rapids, Catherine Woodward (Shawn)of Cedar Rapids, Brandon Clubb (Molly) of Traer, Jacklyn Clubb of Williamsburg, and Tri Joy of Denver, CO; and three great-grandchildren, Calia and Brody Clubb and Hailey Naughton. Also surviving are two brothers, Keith Rathjen (Kathleen) of Dallas, TX and Marvin Rathjen (Beverly) of Naperville, IL; and a sister Evelyn Nelson (Robert) of Muskegon, MI along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James in 1971 and two brothers, Orrin and Orville, and her twin sister Velma Fetzer
Thelma Anna Rathjen was born March 3, 1924 in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Harry Walter and Laura Tromerhauser Rathjen. She attended the Williamsburg Community Schools, and graduated with the class of 1942. Thelma married James F. Naughton on January 1, 1948 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo, Iowa. She worked as a waitress for numerous restaurants in the Williamsburg area and over 30 years at the Colony Village Restaurant on Interstate 80. Thelma was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. She enjoyed gardening and walking, but she found special joy in the interests and achievements of all her children and family. She was dearly loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.

Carol J. Kensler, age 87, died Friday, January 15, 2010, at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at St. Johns’ Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Douglas Morton officiating. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Burial: Koszta Cemetery, rural Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
She is survived by two sons: Mark (Harriet) of Marengo and Kirk (Treva) of San Diego, CA; two daughters: Susan Cronbaugh (Charles) of Marengo and Tami Munson (Richard) of Conroy; four grandchildren: Curtis Cronbaugh, Mark Allen Kensler, Stephanie Munson, and Alex Munson; six great-grandchildren: Annie Rabe, Chad Cronbaugh, Gage Kensler, Josh Kensler, Alexis Rohrer, and Alyssa Rohrer; and two great-great-grandchildren: Aiden and Alivia Rabe.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gaylen, her great-grandson Caleb Cronbaugh, two sisters: Irene Houck and Marilyn Landon; three half sisters: Lois Van Renterghem, Evelyn Sherwood, and Ruth Ostrom; and two half brothers: Scott Torrance and Claire Latcham.
Carol Jean Torrance was born June 23, 1922 in Hartwick, IA, the daughter of Walter and Ada Benton Torrance. She graduated from Grinnell High School in 1940 and married Gaylen Floyd Kensler on July 11, 1943 in Hannibal, MO. Carol worked for Shaull’s Variety, the Style Shop, and JJ’s Clothing in Marengo. She also worked for the Iowa County Care Facility for 20 years. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo. Carol enjoyed caring for her family and home. She was deeply loved by her family and will be missed.

Robert Edward Schutterle, age 76, died Monday, January 11, 2010 at his home in Ladora following a short illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Marvin Lorenze officiating. Visitation: 5 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at the funeral home. Burial: Ohio Cemetery, rural Ladora. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his wife Mary Ann of 57 years; two daughters: Vicky (Kathleen) Schutterle of Ladora, Kathy McMann of Marengo; two sons: LaVerne (Charlotte) and Terry (Jeanne) both of Ladora. Also surviving are six grandchildren, several great grandchildren, step grandchildren, and step great grandchildren. He is also survived by his two brothers: Frances (Barb) and Donald (Teri) both of Marengo.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Robert Edward Schutterle was born June 11, 1933 in Iowa County, the son of Edward and Bernice Hacker Schutterle. He attended the Iowa County Schools and married Mary Ann Tuttle on November 16, 1952 at Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo. He worked at Cargill Corn and Starch until his retirement in January of 1996.
Robert loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed driving his Dodge Ram truck, farming, camping with his family and the campers club. Robert was a regular attendee at his great grandchildren’s sporting events.

John Bruce Dillin, age 93, of Marengo died Thursday, January 7, 2010 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital. Memorial Services: 10:30 A.M. Monday, January 11, 2010, First Presbyterian Church, Marengo with Rev. Gerald Rife officiating. Inurnment will be in the Marengo Cemetery with military honors. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
John Bruce Dillin was born on November 4, 1916 in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Cecil R. and Dolly Stucker Dillin. He graduated from Marengo High School in 1934. John was a lifelong resident of Marengo, living in the house where he was born. He served two active terms in the U.S. Army, the first during World War II and the second during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the reserve forces in the interim.
John Bruce was self employed in a shop that his father started. He eventually took over “C.R. Dillin and Son” which included trucking, heavy equipment operator, welding, repair and machine work. If you told him it could not be repaired, he would prove you wrong. He was the last of a breed that knew how to repair and solve problems without throwing money at them, but using his brain to find solutions. He was a great man with knowledge beyond belief. If you asked John Bruce a question about anything, if he did not know the answer, which never happened, you probably did not need to know it!
John was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Marengo. He will be missed by all who were privileged to know him.
John Bruce is survived by his sister Janet Odena Hladky of Marengo; eight nieces and nephews: Peter Hladky of Marengo, Rebecca Stockman of Iowa City, Charles “Rollie” Dillin of Williamstown, NJ, Larry Dillin of Perrysburg, OH, Robert “Tiger” Dillin of Iowa City, John Schmidt of Alta, Thomas Schmidt of Peoria, IL, and Barbara Haman of Marengo; and a brother-in-law Harold Schmidt of Victor. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Charles R. “Bob” Dillin and George R. Dillin, a sister Cheribel Schmidt and a nephew Paul Hladky.
