A. Jeanne Burlage, age 75, of Middle Amana, died Wednesday April 18, 2012 at her home, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Funeral Mass: 1:30 P.M. Saturday, April 21, 2012, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo, with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo, Iowa. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, April 20, 2012, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with a Vigil Service to be held at 4:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established.
Jeanne is survived by her husband of 52 years, William; her children, Mitchell Burlage of Bloomington, MN, Mark Burlage (Cindy) of Kinross, IA, Mike Burlage (Renetta) of Nichols, IA, Ann Petersen (Mark) of Hartley, IA, Greg Burlage (Lisa) of Bemidji, MN and Jeff Burlage of Madrid, IA; and thirteen grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings, Joyce Wedlock (John) of Sunrise Beach, MO, Janet Denton (Bill) of West Des Moines, IA, Jerri Moeller (Don) of Davenport, IA and Pat O’Brien (Jerlynn) of Parnell, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Anna Collins O’Brien, a sister, Sister JoAnne O’Brien, C.H.M., and a granddaughter, Grace Burlage.
Alice Jeanne O’Brien was born April 30, 1936 in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of James Lambert O’Brien and Anna Kathleen Collins O’Brien. She received her education in the Parnell schools and graduated with the Class of 1954 from Ottumwa Heights High School, Ottumwa, Iowa. Jeanne received her LPN certification from Mercidian School of Nursing in Marshalltown in 1957. She was united in marriage to William T. Burlage on September 7, 1959 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Parnell, Iowa. The couple farmed together near Coggon for 32 years. In 1992 they moved to Middle Amana, where Jeanne was employed as a cook at Colonial Manor of Iowa until her retirement.
Jeanne enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking. She was well known for her kitchen cuisine. It was the “hallmark signature of her love”. She especially enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren whenever she got the chance.
Jeanne was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo and the Altar and Rosary Society.

Helen W. Heinze, age 97 of Amana, died Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 21, 2012, Amana Church, Amana, Iowa with Elder Harold Pitz officiating. Burial will be in the East Amana Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, April 20, 2012 at the Amana Church. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church, Goodwill Industries in Iowa City, Iowa, or to the charity of the donor’s choice. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Helene Wilhelmine Schaefer was born on July 1, 1914, in East Amana, Iowa, to Elder Richard Friedrich Schaefer and Susanna (Pfeffer) Schaefer and was the youngest of five children. Helen attended the Amana School and upon graduation in 1928, was assigned to work in the East Amana community kitchen. In 1932, after the Amana Society Change, she began to work at the Amana Woolen Mill as a weaver. In 1934, she married Merle William Gaddis and had two children Roger Duane and Patricia Ann. In 1939, she lost her husband Merle when he passed away, following injuries suffered in an auto accident. Helen remained in her childhood home in East Amana and she and the children found comfort and joy in caring for her mother and father (White Opa). In 1946, she married Adolph Henry Heinze of Middle Amana; sharing a long and loving life together, until his passing in 1990.
Helen’s life emulated Amana’s strong sense of family and community. She was a long-time volunteer at Colonial Manor Nursing Home as well as being a member of Amana’s Welfare Association, Historical Society and the Eastern Star.
Those who knew Helen best, remember her for her giving heart, sharp wit and competitive Pinochle skills. Helen shared often that her life’s greatest blessing was family and was so pleased to have had the chance to share the lives of her children’s children (through five generations).
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her two brothers [Henry and Karl], her two sisters [Esther (Schaefer) Goerler and Elsie (Schaefer) Seifert], and husbands Merle W. Gaddis and Adolph Heinze.
Helen is survived by her children, Roger Gaddis [and wife, Pauline of Plano, Texas], Patricia (Gaddis) Hergert [and husband, Richard of DeWitt, Iowa]; Grandchildren, Merle Gaddis [and wife, Kelly of Olathe, Kansas], Thomas Hergert [and wife, Judi of Des Moines, Iowa], Susan Hergert of Coralville, Iowa, Robert Gaddis of Redondo Beach, California, Karen (Hergert) Bertolino [and husband, Theron of DeWitt, Iowa], Melissa (Gaddis) Toohey [and husband, Peter of Plano, Texas], Catherine (Hergert) Hentges [and husband, Bruce of St. Louis, Missouri]; Great Grandchildren Jami (Hergert) Brown, Jeff Hergert, Melissa Gaddis, Brendan Toohey, Jacob Hergert, Katie Hergert, Sophia Toohey, Rachael Bertolino, Kristen Gaddis, Darcy Bertolino, Schaefer Toohey, Nicole Hentges and Peter Hentges; Great-Great Grandchildren, Mallory Shulberg and Amara Brown.

Laberta “Betty” Ruth Everist, age 92, formerly of Brooklyn, passed away at the Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines, on February 24, 2012. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 21 at Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn, Iowa. Former students will be invited to join in a mass Choir Trubute during the service. Memorials may be directed to a music scholarship in her name at BGM Community High School. Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn is in charge of arrangements
Betty was born August 17, 1919, in Atlantic, IA, the daughter of John and Ethel Sutton Rapp. She graduated from Atlantic High School with the class of 1936. Betty received her teaching certificate from the Iowa State Teachers College and continued on to The University of Iowa where she graduated in 1940 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music.
In 1942, Betty married Ronald Everist and the couple made their home on a dairy farm outside of Clemons, later moving to Holiday Lake near Brooklyn, Iowa. Betty taught music in Clemons, West Marshall, and Brooklyn-Guernsey-Malcom High Schools. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn where she served as choir director and organist for many years.
Following retirement, Betty and her husband resided in Rio Hondo, TX, where she continued to work in the private and public school systems and as church organist in Harlingen, TX, until returning to Iowa in 2007.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents John and Ethel Rapp, sister, Mina Rapp, brother, Cyril Rapp, husband, Ronald Everist and granddaughter, Karrie Everist.
She is survived by her son, Ron (Connie) Everist of Burnsville, MN, and two daughters Terri (Robert) O’Halloran of Phoenix, AZ and Myrna (Duane) Ver Ploeg of Newton, IA, three grandchildren; Jenna Ver Ploeg, Des Moines, IA, Kelsi (Bryan) Vander Meiden, Pella, IA, and Allan (Misa) Everist, Lutz, FL, and great grandchildren; Kaitlyn and Madelyn Everist.
In addition to her family, Betty leaves a legacy of students influenced by her musical genius and passion for life.

Lawrence John “Larry” Jennings, age 71 of Wellman, formerly of Williamsburg, died Monday, April 9, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. Funeral Mass: 11:00 A.M. Friday, April 13, 2012, St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Cosgrove, Iowa with Fr. Edmund Dunn officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Parnell, Iowa. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, April 12, 2012 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Cosgrove with a K of C Rosary at 7 P.M. and a Vigil Service to follow. A memorial fund has been established.
Larry is survived by two sisters, Joan “Jo” Holloway of Omaha, NE and Kathleen Pulzone (Benny) of Wallace, NC; four nieces, Mary Frances Martinez (Larry) of Virginia Beach, VA, Kathy Allan of Fayetteville, NC, Kelly Autry (Larry) of Fayetteville, and Patty Heath (Lee) of Greensboro, NC; and a nephew Eddie Pulzone of Maryland. Also surviving are a great-niece, 7 great-nephews, a great-great-niece and two great-great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Mary Therese Allan and a brother-in-law John F. Holloway.
Lawrence John Jennings was born November 3, 1940 in rural Parnell, Iowa, the son of Francis M. and Agnes R. Kinney Jennings. He attended the Parnell schools and worked with his father on the family farm until they moved into Williamsburg. Larry was employed as a custodian and box maker at Williamsburg Manufacturing from 1977 to 1992. He then worked at the Fast Stop in Williamsburg. Larry enjoyed people and delivered Meals on Wheels for over 5 years. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Parnell for many years and then joined St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. He was a first degree member of Knights of Columbus Council 2818. Most recently he had been residing at Silver Pond Assisted Living at Parkview Manor in Wellman.

Bruce V. Weldon, age 65, of Marengo, died Friday, April 6, 2012 at his home. A Gathering to celebrate Bruce’s life will be from Noon until 2 P.M. on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Inurnment will be at a later date. A memorial fund has been established.
Bruce is survived by his daughter Brenda Stull of Belle Plaine; two sons, David (Dawn) of Delta and Shawn (Kija) of Tiffin; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Joe Weldon of Iowa City and Jim Weldon of New York, NY; two sisters, Mary Baumgartner of Marengo and Zelda Clubb of South English; and his half-brother Bruce Ward of Jerusalem, AR. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce and Viola Hight Weldon, and a sister Marilyn Smith.
Bruce Vincent Weldon was born October 7, 1946 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Bruce and Viola Hight Weldon. He attended the Marengo schools. Bruce worked as a logger and salvage operator.

Wilda J. Rotter, age 84 formerly of Marengo, died Tuesday, April 3, 2012 in Mena, Arkansas. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Monday, April 9, 2012, First United Methodist Church, Marengo with Rev. Katie Z. Dawson officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday, April 8, 2012 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Wilda is survived by her son David Rotter and wife Diane of Mena, AR; two grandsons, Greg Rotter (Michelle) of Van Buren, AR, and Jeff Rotter (Hannah) of Mena; four great-grandchildren, Nick Harvey, Emilee Rotter, Madison Rotter and Alana Rotter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lester “Chalk” Rotter, three sisters, and three brothers.
Wilda Juanita Ritchie was born November 9, 1927 in Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of Fred Ritchie and Flora Klein Ritchie. She married Lester “Chalk” Rotter and they were blessed with a son, David. Wilda was an Educator by profession and was of the Methodist faith. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women’s Association, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She will be missed by her family and many friends.

Larry Grant Dayton, age 80 of Brooklyn, died Saturday, March 31, 2012 at Brooklyn Community Estate. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, April 5, 2012, Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn with Rev. Dorothy Banzhaf officiating. Burial will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery with military honors. Visitation: 5 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. A memorial fund has been established.
Larry is survived by his wife Anna Grace; his children, Stephen (LaVerne) Dayton of Arroyo Grande, CA, Robin (Ronald) Miller of Mason City, Gaylon (Janet) Dayton of Clive and Carol (Patrick) Croke of Forest Grove, OR; six grandchildren, USMC GYSGT Jeremy McGrath (Jaylene) of Okinawa, Japan, Rachel Miller of Faribault, MN, Kimberly Miller of Mason City, Matthew Dayton and William Dayton of Clive, and Garrick Croke of Forest Grove, OR; and a great-grandson Benjamin McGrath. Also surviving are a sister Norma Allen of Brooklyn, a brother-in-law Robert Little of Albia, nieces Rebecca Hammer (Richard), and Brenda Jermier (David), a nephew Keith Little (Kathryn) and several great and great-great nieces and nephews and numerous cousins; two step-grandchildren, Evelyn Collins (Jeff) of Littleton, NH and Sherman Eastton (Jenna) of Grover Beach, CA and their children Taylor, Ava and Gage; and Anna Grace’s sister-in-law Rachel Mitten of St. Charles, MO and her extended family.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Miriam Little, two great-grandsons, Josiah and Seth McGrath, a great-nephew Trevor Hammer, and two brothers-in-law, Earl Allen and Aura Mitten.
Larry Grant Dayton was born May 18, 1931 in Grinnell, Iowa, the son of Freeman Egbert Dayton and Grace Ostrom Dayton. He received his education in the Poweshiek County schools and graduated from Montezuma High School in 1949. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954 in the Signal Corps and attained the rank of Corporal. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1958 with a B.S. Degree in Agricultural Education. Larry was employed as a Vocational Agriculture teacher at Moravia Community Schools for 11 years, and at Brooklyn-Guernsey-Malcom Community Schools for 16 years. Larry worked for Ruritan, Montezuma Manufacturing, and Lage Manufacturing until his retirement.
Larry was united in marriage to Anna Grace Mitten on June 21, 1959 at Grace Methodist Church in Moravia, Iowa. They were blessed with four children, Stephen Glen, Robin Gwen, Gaylon Gene and Carol Jeannine.
Larry loved his family very much. He enjoyed working in the yard and gardens. He also enjoyed flying and woodworking. Larry’s love of farming ran deep and he was always interested in crops and farming operations that he saw while traveling.
Larry was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn, Iowa State Education Association, National Education Association, Iowa Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association, and Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Community of Flags Store in Brooklyn.

Margaret D. “Marge” Burns, age 82 of Brooklyn, died Friday, March 30, 2012 at Brooklyn Community Estate, Brooklyn, Iowa. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn with Rev. John Reynolds, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 P.M. Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.
Marge is survived by her son David and wife Beverly of Wheaton, IL; four grandchildren, Josh Humphrey (Heather) of Brooklyn, Megan Vajgrt (Andy) of Williamsburg, David Wayne Humphrey II (Courtney)of Tacoma Park, MD, and Kathryn Humphrey (Mike) of West Hartford, CT; four great-grandchildren, Rebecca and Mason Vajgrt, Carolyn Eacobacci and Gabriel Humphrey; and a daughter-in-law Krista Humphrey of Brooklyn.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Truman Humphrey and Eldon Burns, a son Larry Humphrey, a brother August DeLoof, three sisters, Leona Andes, Dorothy Kochuyt and Marian Macksey.
Margaret Darlene DeLoof was born July 26, 1929 in rural Brooklyn, Iowa, the daughter of Ernest DeLoof and Augusta DeVilder DeLoof. She received her education in the Poweshiek County schools. Margaret was united in marriage to Truman Humphrey and two sons were born to this union, Larry and David. Truman died in 1988. She married Eldon Burns on July 25, 1969. He passed away in 1999.
Margaret was employed for many years at the local grocery store in Brooklyn, and then in Grinnell. She later was employed at Brooklyn Community Estate in Brooklyn. Marge enjoyed helping others and was very active with the Brooklyn Food Bank in her later years. She enjoyed gardening and cooking, and was known for her tasty pot roasts and pies.
