Leslie P. “Red” Dietze, age 65, of Marengo, Iowa, died Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at Parkview Manor in Wellman, Iowa. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, October 27, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church, Marengo, Iowa. Burial will be in Sumner Township Cemetery, Ladora, Iowa, with military honors. Visitation will be 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, October 26, 2012 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Leslie is survived by his wife Linda; a son William (Connie) of Luzerne; two daughters, Susan Kaster (Dale) of DeWitt and Lisa Dietze of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Shauntel Wagner (Ben), Brittany Roman, Joshua Roman, Zach Reynolds (Catie), Kaitlyn Reynolds (Shawn), Katie Blake, and Kaylee Maxwell; and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Rick Dietze (Katy) and Reggie Dietze (Linda) all of Victor; and four sisters, Judy Damerval (Jerri), Kathy Hartz (Maury), and Becky Schmuecker (Dean), all of Marengo, and Brenda McCammant (Mike) of Ladora.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Matthew Roman, a sister-in-law Elaine Dietze, and a brother-in-law Richard Bringmann.
Leslie Paul Dietze was born July 2, 1947 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Paul L. and Gladys E. Lutz Dietze. He attended the HLV schools and later received his GED. Leslie “Red” served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was united in marriage to Linda Stephens on October 3, 1970 in Ladora, Iowa. Red was employed as a repairman for Amana Refrigeration for 35 years. He was a member of the N.D.Q.S.A. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He also enjoyed camping with his family. Red was a jolly, good-spirited man and he engaged in horseplay with his family and friends whenever the occasion arose.

Michael Allen Hawkes, age 66 of South Amana, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at his home. Graveside Services: 10:00 A.M. Friday, October 12, 2012, at the South Amana Cemetery, South Amana, Iowa with Elder Harold Pitz officiating. Visitation: 4 to 6 P.M. Thursday, October 11, 2012 at the Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Michael is survived by his wife, Deborah; two daughters, Chanda Adams and husband Keven of Maryville, MO, and Deanna Oujiri and husband Steven of Lakeville, MN; five grandchildren, Jacob, Alana and Aaron Adams, and Connor and Ellen Oujiri; and his mother Dorothy Jane Nagel Hawkes of High Amana. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Michael Allen Hawkes was born October 22, 1945 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He attended the Amana schools and graduated from Amana High School with the class of 1964. Michael served with the U.S. Army Reserves for six years. He married Deborah Roggentine on January 20, 1968 at Trinity United Church of Christ, rural Marengo. Michael was employed as a design engineer with Amana Refrigeration. He was a member of the Amana Church Society, and served on the Board of Directors for the Amana Arts Guild. Michael enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and photography in his free time.

Orlin J. “Oscar” Kurth, age 87 of Marengo, died Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo. Graveside Services: 2:00 P.M. Thursday, October 11, 2012, Marengo Cemetery, with Rev. James Dotson officiating. The family will greet friends from 1 - 2 P.M. Thursday, October 11, 2012 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo.
Orlin is survived by three brothers, William Kurth (Doris) of Marengo, Lyle Kurth (Carol) of Robins, IA, and Robert Kurth (Sylvia) of Riverside, CA; and two sisters, Naomi Krakow (Elmer) and Dorothy Krakow (George), all of Marengo; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Maxine Slaymaker and a brother-in-law, Gerald Slaymaker.
Orlin Junior “Oscar” Kurth was born April 18, 1925 in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Verna William Kurth and Florence Kanke Kurth. He attended the Marengo schools. Oscar was employed with various businesses over the years, including, Solar Homes and Ratzel Furniture in Marengo. He had also worked for the Marengo Cemetery.

Sylvia M. Waline, age 62 of Brooklyn, Iowa, died Saturday, October 6, 2012 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Hospice Center. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at Calvary Lutheran Church, Deep River, Iowa, with Pastor Paul Nus officiating. Burial will be in the Guernsey Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. A memorial fund has been established.
Sylvia is survived by her husband Marvin; two daughters, Kathy Langreck and husband Dustin of Blairstown, and Jane Waline of Victor; a granddaughter Emily Waline; two brothers, Melvin Ranfeld and wife Mary of Deep River, and Randy Ranfeld and wife Mary of Montezuma; two sisters, Inez Scott and husband Don of Brooklyn, and Merna Duffus and husband Doug of Grinnell; and a sister-in-law Donna (Ranfeld) Ratcliff and husband Glenn of Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Harvey Johnston, and Larry Ranfeld, and a sister-in-law Mabel Johnston.
Sylvia Mae Ranfeld was born October 20, 1949 in Deep River, Iowa, the daughter of Mern Ranfeld and Clara Schlesselman. She began her education in the Poweshiek country schools and then attended the Montezuma school, graduating in 1967. She married Marvin Waline on May 23, 1970 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Besides being a wife, mother, and homemaker, Sylvia worked for General Telephone in Grinnell for 7 years.
Sylvia was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Deep River. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, and creating various custom crafts and selling them on eBay all over the country. But she especially enjoyed spending time with her family and her granddaughter.

Forrest Dean “Bud” Hollopeter, age 84, of Ladora, died Monday, October 1, 2012 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Friday, October 5, 2012, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Jim Davis officiating. Burial will be in the Ohio Cemetery, rural Ladora with military honors. Visitation: 4 to 8 P.M. Thursday, October 4, 2012 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the Ladora Fire Department and Ladora First Responders.
Dean is survived by his wife Beatrice; a son Larry of Ladora, two daughters, Susan Johnson (Jim) of Ladora, and Patsy Imhoff (Jerry) of Marengo; four grandchildren, Eric Johnson of Tiffin, Brandy Enochson (Troy) of Marengo, Matt Imhoff of Marengo, and Cindy Johnson of Changzhou, China; and two great-grandchildren, Beau Enochson of Ames and Brice Enochson of Marengo. Also surviving are a sister Betty Hollopeter of Ladora; two brothers, Charles (Jo) of Williamsburg, and Floyd “Bill” of Ladora; and a sister-in-law, Dolores Hollopeter of Victor; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lawrence and Frank, and two sisters, Hazel and Mary Hollopeter, and a sister-in-law Mardean Hollopeter.
Forrest Dean Hollopeter was born May 14, 1928 in rural Ladora, Iowa, the son of Charles Oscar Hollopeter and Laura Ida Slaymaker Hollopeter. He graduated from the Ladora High School in 1946 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Dean married Beatrice Van Blaricom on September 12, 1952 at Zion Reformed Church, rural Millersburg, Iowa. He was a farmer for his entire life in the Ladora area. Dean enjoyed auctions, deer and pheasant hunting, and his farming. He especially enjoyed conversing with all his neighbors and friends. He was a member of the Ohio Methodist Church, rural Ladora and a past member of the Ladora American Legion.

Gloria L. Schumacher, age 72, of Marengo, Iowa, died Wednesday, September 26, 2012, following a courageous battle with cancer. Per her wishes, her body was donated to the University of Iowa for research-science. Memorial Service: 6:00 P.M. Saturday, September 29, 2012, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, with Rev. Katie Dawson officiating. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo, at a later date. The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 P.M. Saturday, at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in Gloria's name.
Gloria is survived by her husband Larry; a son Vance (Adrienne) of Cedar Rapids; a daughter Serena Brueggemeyer (Erik) of Cedar Rapids; and four grandchildren, Austin and Emily Schumacher, and Tyler and Brayden Brueggemeyer. She is also survived by her mother, Alice Hayes of Marengo; a sister Elaine Cooney (Gary) of Hudson; and a sister-in-law Florence Hayes of Belle Plaine. She was preceded in death by her father Howard Hayes and a brother John.
Gloria Lee Hayes was born August 2, 1940 in Pittsfield, Illinois, the daughter of Howard and Alice Tucker Hayes. She graduated from Marengo High School with the Class of 1958, and married Larry Schumacher on August 26, 1961 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo. Gloria was employed as secretary for the Superintendent of Iowa Valley Schools for many years. She also served as secretary for the Iowa Valley School Board. Gloria was an avid reader in her free time. She also cherished the time she spent with her children and grandchildren.

Charles Francis “Charlie” Powell, age 41 of Marengo, Iowa, died Monday, September 24, 2012 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital following a sudden illness. Funeral Service: 2:00 P.M. Saturday, September 29, 2012, First United Methodist Church, Marengo with Rev. Katie Dawson officiating. Visitation will be from noon until 2:00 on Saturday at the church. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Charlie is survived by his wife Catherine; three sons, Charles William Powell of Toledo, OH, Christopher Powell of Marengo, and Damien Powell of Toledo, OH; a daughter Megan Powell of Toledo, OH; two step-children, Sarah Smith of Marengo, and Matthew Smith of Rock Island, IL; and six grandchildren. He is also survived by his parents, Roy and Carol Powell of Toledo, OH; three siblings Daniel, Wade and Dawn Powell, all of Toledo, OH; and his mother-in-law Elsye “Ma” Calvert of Moline, IL.
Charles Francis Powell was born June 18, 1971 in Ohio, the son of Roy and Carol Foor Powell. He attended many schools and eventually received his GED. He was employed as a truck driver for Air Land Express. Charlie married Catherine Calvert on June 26, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church in Marengo. He was a member of the Iowa County Fair Board in earlier years. He loved working with children, and horses, and was a 4-H horse clinician. He also enjoyed muscle cars and was an avid bow hunter.

Fritz R. Marz, age 87 of Homestead, died Monday, September 24, 2012 at Colonial Manor of Amana. Funeral Service: 10:00 A.M. Thursday, September 27, 2012, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana, with Elder Alan Trumpold officiating. Burial will be in the Homestead Cemetery with military honors. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at the Middle Amana Church. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Fritz is survived by his wife, Ellen May; a son Gene Marz (Deb) of Cedar Rapids; a daughter Geri Marz (Lu Zoller) of Portland, OR; two grandchildren, Corey Urbanek (Bryce) of Kearney, NE, and Jake Marz of Brooklyn, NY; and a brother Louis Marz (Caroline) of Homestead. He was preceded in death by a sister Helen Dittrich.
Fritz Rudolph Marz was born March 24, 1925 in Homestead, Iowa, the son of John Jacob Marz and Henriette Kolb Marz. Fritz served in the U.S. Army for 3 years, from 1943-46, stationed in the China, Burma and India Theatre. He returned to Amana and graduated from Amana High School in 1947. Fritz married Ellen May Leichsenring on September 12, 1948 in a Homestead garden wedding. He was employed with the Amana Society Telephone Departments, the South Amana Bakery, and in November 1955 went to work with Amana Refrigeration until his retirement 35 years later. Fritz was a member of the Homestead Volunteer Fire Department for many years, and the Homestead Welfare Club. He also managed the Amana Cemeteries for 42 years. Fritz enjoyed photography, and he spent many hours in his woodworking shop.
The family would like to extend a very sincere thank you to the entire staff of Colonial Manor for their wonderful support over the past three and a half years.
