Jean M. Van Ersvelde, age 90 of Brooklyn, died Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at her home. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Monday, February 11, 2013, Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn, with Rev. John Dodds officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. A memorial fund has been established.
Jean is survived by her children, Susan Willett (Allan) of Victor, Barb Schwiebert (Jim) of Brooklyn, Henry Van Ersvelde III (Kathy Hauersperger) of Montezuma, and Lori Olson (Marc) of Brooklyn; ten grandchildren, Curt Willett (Angela Doty) of Brooklyn, Christopher Willett (Kandi) of Victor, Mark Willett (Jessica) of Anniston, AL, Brad Schwiebert (Caylon Mitchell and Treyton) of Ames, Jill Kilmartin (Donovan) of Houston, TX, Cassie Minnaert (Nate) of Brooklyn, Adam Snook (Heather) of Montezuma, Ivy Van Ersvelde (Andy Schuster) of Searsboro, Alyssa Kahl (Nate) of Slater, and Cole Olson of Brooklyn; and 16 great-grandchildren, Katie, Spencer, and Emma Willett, Bret, Nikki, and Jacob Doty, Preston and Derek Willett, Trevor and Dylan Willett, Karsyn, Karagyn, and Emersyn Minnaert, and Hunter Van Dee, Chloe and Emma Snook.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Henry Van Ersvelde, Jr., two sisters, Florence Williams, and Neva Johnson, and a brother John White.
Jean Maxine White was born September 14, 1922 in rural Brooklyn, Iowa, the daughter of Almon and Julia Tesar White. She graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1940 and married Henry Van Ersvelde Jr. on September 10, 1945 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn. Jean was a wife, mother and homemaker. She liked to travel, fish, and read. She was very much at home on the farm, attending to the baby calves, gardening, and cooking. She enjoyed hosting Halloween parties for her children and friends, taking bus trips, playing cards and going to dances. She was also an avid Cubs fan, and in her free time she loved to oil paint.
Jean was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, BBB’s, and the Southside Community Club.

Clarence Lester Olswold, age 92 of Amana, Iowa, died Saturday February 2, 2013, at Colonial Manor of Amana, Amana, Iowa. Per his wishes, his body was donated to the University of Iowa for medical research. Memorial Service: 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 9, 2013, Trinity Lutheran Church, Walford, Iowa, with Rev. David Mosher officiating. The family will receive friends after 10:00 A.M. Saturday at the church. Memorials may be contributed to Trinity Lutheran Church, Walford. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Clarence is survived by his wife Clarice; his sons, Eugene of New Ulm, MN, Allen (Kathy) of DeSoto, TX, Charles (Alice) of Muscatine, Richard (Bonnie) of Middlesex, NY, and Ronald (Debbie) of Walford, IA; nine grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Lillie Bagstad Olswold, along with a sister Mae Lugg.
Clarence Lester Olswold was born May 28, 1920, in Lyle, Minnesota, the son of Henry Olswold and Lillie Bagstad Olswold. He graduated from Lyle High School in 1937. Clarence married Clarice Kirkeby on August 16, 1941 in Osage, IA. On April 5, 1942, he joined the Navy where he served for 3 years on a submarine during WWII. In October 1945, Clarence returned to Osage where he owned and operated a plumbing business. In 1967, the couple moved to the Amana and Williamsburg area, where he worked as a cabinet and clock maker at Amana Furniture. Clarence was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Walford and Sub Vets of WWII.

Helen Berger Hertel, age 96 of Amana, died Sunday, February 3, 2013 at Colonial Manor of Amana. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Friday, February 8, 2013, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana with Elder Mike Shoup officiating. Burial will be in the South Amana Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, February 7, 2013 at the Middle Amana Community Church. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church Society. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Helen is survived by her son, Larry of South Amana; a daughter Lynda H. Flaherty (Brian) of South Lake, TX; two grandchildren, Kellie and B. Kyle Flaherty; and a sister Emma Johnson of Norwalk, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Henry on June 3, 2011, three brothers, Fred, Adolph T. “A.T.” and Dan Berger, and three sisters, Christine Engelhaupt, Dorothy Marz and Emily in infancy.
Helen Berger was born October 14, 1916 in South Amana, Iowa, the daughter of Herman Berger and Mary Setzer Berger. She attended the South Amana schools and later attended the Cedar Rapids Business College. Helen married Henry Emil Hertel on November 10, 1948 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Besides a wife, mother, and homemaker, she worked in the communal kitchen, the shoe store, and later worked as an accountant in the Amana Refrigeration office.

Herbert James Fry, age 84 of Williamsburg, died Friday, March 29, 2013 at Colonial Manor of Amana. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, April 2, 2013, Zion Lutheran Church, Iowa City, with Rev. Mark Pries officiating. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, April 1, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, and after 9:30 A.M. Tuesday, at the church. Memorials may be contributed to the Zion Building Fund or Iowa City Hospice.
Herb is survived by his wife Barbara Jean “Bobbi”; two daughters, Jami Fry Wong (Jeremy) of Encinitas, CA, and Rhia Wilkin (Chris Strohm) of Arcadia, WI; five grandchildren, Aidan and Dylan Wong, and Marena, Cameron and Carson Wilkin; two step-grandchildren, Patience Ramos and Jasmine Strohm; and two sisters, Lucille Fearneyhough of Sedalia, MO and Shirley Possehl of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Harold, Bill, Gene and DeWayne; and four sisters, Betty Vogel, Ruby Patterson, Lavera Cheney, and Nellie Patterson.
Herbert James Fry was born March 29, 1929 in Ladora, Iowa, the son of William Francis and Dollie May Waterhouse Fry. He graduated from Marengo High School in 1948 and attended the Kansas City Art Institute for two years. Herb served in the U.S. Army from 1952- 54, during the Korean Conflict. He married Barbara Jean Schuelke on November 30, 1956 in Odell, Nebraska. He was employed for many years in the dietary department at the University of Iowa, Iowa City.
Herb was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City, and Sport Hill Country Club in Williamsburg. He spent his leisure time golfing and bowling. He also enjoyed his art work.

Louise D. Kuntz, age 88, of Brooklyn, Iowa, died Friday, March 22, 2013 at Brooklyn Community Estate in Brooklyn. Funeral Services: 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 26, 2013, Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn with Rev. John Dodds officiating. Burial: Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, March 25, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. Memorials may be contributed to Grace United Methodist Church, Poweshiek Co. Ambulance Service and P.A.L.S. (Poweshiek Animal League Shelter).
Louise is survived by her sons, William Arthur Kuntz (Linda), Archie Raymond Kuntz (Sally), and Clair Alan Kuntz (Leila) all of Brooklyn; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a step-great grandchild; two great-great grandchildren; and a sister Isabel Waterbeck of Grinnell.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William in 2003, a brother Harold “Pie” Keller, and a sister Arlene Scott.
Louise Doris Keller was born July 19, 1924 in Poweshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Byron and Ruth Hendrickson Keller. She graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1942. She worked at the local grocery store and hotel, and for the Farm Bureau. Louise married William F. Kuntz on June 19, 1945 at Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn. Louise was a wife, mother and homemaker and assisted her husband on the farm. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn, and Beta Sigma Phi. She enjoyed square dancing, gardening and the neighborhood coffee club. She also liked to accompany her husband on the South Devon cattle buying trips.

Esther Hattie Tschopp Lingo, age 97 of Marengo, died Friday, March 22, 2013 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 27, 2013, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, March 26, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo, Marengo Memorial Hospital, Rose Haven Nursing Home, Care Initiatives Hospice, or the donor’s choice.
Esther was born June 9, 1915 east of Marengo in a farm home south of Highway 6 across from the current Iowa Valley Trailer Estates. She attended Aurora School for all elementary grades having the same instructor, Miss Nellie Nelson. She graduated as an honor student from elementary school. She then attended Marengo Carson High School for 4 years with many business courses. She was active in glee club, speech, and sang in St. John’s Lutheran Church choir. She was confirmed in March 1930. Esther was a member of the National Honor Society graduating in 1932. After graduating, she was fortunate during the depression to continue doing housework for an attorney and his wife.
On February 5, 1934, she was married to James Vestal Wayne Lingo at St. John’s Lutheran parsonage in Marengo by Rev. Theodore Rottman. The couple lived for a short time in Missouri and returned to Iowa to help Esther’s mom with farming at a farm south of Marengo. They purchased a home in Marengo in 1960. Esther then worked as a cook at the Marengo High School. She later became a secretary at Marengo Memorial Hospital until she retired in 1981.
Esther was a loving wife and mother who enjoyed baking cookies and pies for others. She liked to play bridge and other card games with family and friends. Esther loved caring for her flower gardens as long as she was able. She was an active member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid, and Altar Guild. She was an honorary member of the Marengo American Legion Auxiliary. After retirement, she continued her work at church, volunteered at the hospital taking cookies and bananas to patients and staff, and donated pies to the Legion and church. Her volunteering continued until she moved to the Lodge on Lafayette in 2003. In 2007, she was moved to Rose Haven Nursing Home. Esther left this life at Rose Haven on Friday, March 22, 2013 surrounded by her daughters and caregivers.
Esther is survived by two daughters, Doris (Richard) Faas of Cedar Rapids, Marilynn (Robert) Stabenow of Janesville, IA; daughter-in-law, Janet Zimmerman of McKinney, TX; grandchildren, James (Wendy) Lingo of Mt. Dora, FL; Jeff (Heather) Lingo of Plano, TX; Dave Faas of Marion; Dawn (Jac) Spring of Winona, MS; Troy (Rebecca) Stabenow of Jefferson City, MO; Zakarij Stabenow of Waterloo, IA. She is also survived by ten great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fritz and Helen Steinmetz Tschopp; her husband, Vestal Lingo in 1989; son, James Lingo in 1992; sister, Wilma Bruestle; and brother, Fritz Tschopp.

LuAnn D. Koenig, age 49 of Marengo, died Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital following a lingering illness from brain cancer diagnosed at an earlier age. . Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Monday, March 25, 2013, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday, March 24, 2013 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
LuAnn is survived by her parents, Rudolph and Verna Koenig, three brothers, Larry (Cheryl) of Bondurant, Lee (Vicki) of Marengo, and Lorne (Sandy) of Marengo; a sister Linda Utsinger (Leon) of Oquawka, IL; seventeen nieces and nephews and 21 great-nieces and nephews.
LuAnn Dru Koenig was born February 13, 1964 in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Rudolph and Verna Newkirk Koenig. She graduated from Iowa Valley High School, Marengo, in 1982, and worked as a secretary-receptionist for her brother in his chiropractic office. LuAnn was an accomplished musician and played several instruments. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo.

Linda Lee Kanke, age 66 of Marengo, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at her home. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, March 23, 2013, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, March 22, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Linda is survived by her husband, Wayne; her children Stacy McMann (Travis) and Jock Kanke (Mandi), all of Marengo: eleven grandchildren, Stephanie and Nathan Ballard, Katelin and Andrea Healey, Molly and Macy McMann, Tre and Lorenzo Gonzalez, Sahara, Carli, and Hayden Kanke, all of Marengo; and her siblings, Sam (Carole) Slaymaker of Marengo, Alice Rohrer (Richard) of Hartwick, Lee (Suni) Slaymaker of Marengo, Don (Shirley) Slaymaker of Marengo, and Steve (Jan) Slaymaker of Conroy; and sister-in-law, Gerry Formanek of Marengo. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Clement Slaymaker in 1996.
Linda Lee Slaymaker was born September 25, 1946 in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Violet Ziegler Slaymaker. She graduated from Iowa Valley High School with the Class of 1964 and attended Paris Beauty School in Cedar Rapids. Linda married Wayne Myron Kanke on April 12, 1969 at First United Methodist Church in Marengo. She was owner and operator of her own beauty salon for many years.
Linda was a member of the Marengo American Legion #76 Auxiliary, and St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. She enjoyed Nascar, especially Jeff Gordon, playing jokes on people, and just having fun. She loved to reminisce of her younger days, doing hair and manicures with her granddaughters, and listening to Elvis music.

Nora D. Kinsinger, age 92 of Wellman, Iowa, died Friday, March 22, 2013 at Parkview Manor in Wellman. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Kloster Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
She is survived by her son Ed and wife Doris Kinsinger of Parnell, and their family.
