Orville Dale Bahr, age 73 of Swisher, Iowa, died Wednesday May 8, 2013 at his home following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, May 14, 2013, Clover Ridge United Methodist Church, Walford, IA, with Rev. Mike Townsley officiating. Burial will be in Hala Cemetery, rural Walford with military honors. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, May 13, 2013 at Clover Ridge United Methodist Church, Walford. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Orville is survived by his wife Grace “Pat”; two sons, Ricky (Karen) of Marengo, and Kevin (Sherri Gillick) of Swisher; a daughter Vicki Bahr of Swisher; a daughter-in-law Michelle Bahr of Swisher; and six grandchildren, Kenneth Bahr (April DeFauw) of Cedar Rapids, Andrew Bahr (Brandi) of Cedar Rapids, Christian Bahr, Isaac Bahr, and Gracie Lynn Bahr, all of Swisher, and Stephanie Gillick of Belle Plaine; and a great-grandchild Sophia Bahr of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Randy in 2012.
Orville Dale Bahr was born July 17, 1939 in Marengo, Iowa, the only son of Dale and Irene Kopf Bahr. He attended the Iowa County schools and Marengo High School. Orville served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He and Grace Patricia Koch were united in marriage on March 23, 1961 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Homestead. He was employed as a sheet metal machinist for 36 years with Steel Products Company in Cedar Rapids.
Orville was a member of VFW Post 788 in Cedar Rapids, and Clover Ridge United Methodist Church, Walford. In earlier years he was a scout master. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and mushroom hunting. He liked playing his DS and bird-watching. Orville especially cherished his time with his family and friends.

Lavelle A. Osborn, age 75 of Brooklyn, died Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Brooklyn Community Estate. Per her wishes, her body has been donated to medical research. Memorial Services: 10:00 A.M. Thursday, May 2, 2013, Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn with Rev. John Dodds officiating. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn is assisting the family. She is survived by her son John Childers of Brooklyn, three step- grandchildren, Amanda Hard (Justin) of Cedar Rapids, Stephanie Marble of Wisconsin, and Jamie Childers-Dreggart (Ian) of Des Moines; and a great-grandchild Alyzabeth Hard. She is also survived by a brother Clyde Bradford of Des Moines.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Allen Bradford and Neva Jean Tucker Bradford, her husbands, Don Childers, Steve Sterner, Gordon Embry, Dan Shaw, and Joe Osborn, a son Lou Allen, A grandson Beau Thomas Childers and a brother Mickey Bradford.

Betty Lou Knapp, age 86 of Walford, formerly of Marengo, died Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Willow Gardens Care Center in Marion. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, April 30, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Tom Reuss officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, April 29, 2013 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Betty is survived by two sons, Rory (Kevin) of Marion, and Fred of North English; a daughter, Mary Gomez of Marengo; 11 grandchildren, Kevin Knapp, Cody Knapp (Megan), Casey Knapp (Alicia), Caylie Knapp, Kendra Gomez, Kaitlyn Gomez, Krisha Gomez, Keegan Cope, Kevin Kolsto, Ashton Meek and Michael Joyner; four great-grandchildren, Simon Fitzpatrick, Carter Knapp, Christy Knapp and Cora Knapp.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Evelyn Septer and Vivian Yoder; a brother-in-law, John Septer, a nephew Duane Olson, Sr., and a grand niece Debbie Martinson.
Betty Lou Olson was born February 28, 1927 in Fairfax, Iowa, the daughter of Oliver Lee Olson and Esther Leader Olson. She graduated from Marengo High School with the Class of 1945 and began teaching in the one-room country schools. Later Betty was employed at Wilson Foods in Cedar Rapids for 35 years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Walford.

Gayle Marie Snavely, age 96, of Williamsburg, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Memorial Service: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 27, 2013, Ladora United Methodist Church, Ladora, Iowa with Pastor Dorothy Banzhaf officiating. Inurnment: Ladora Cemetery. The family will greet friends after 9:00 A.M. Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the church. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by a daughter, Peggy Hilligas and husband Don of Brooklyn; a granddaughter Renae Sellers and husband Tony; and three great-grandchildren, Hannah, Canden and Joel Sellers. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Clifford Snavely.
Gayle Marie Cronbaugh was born March 24, 1917 in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Harvey and Florence Wright Cronbaugh. She attended the Iowa County schools. In earlier years Gayle worked at the Lincoln Cafe in Belle Plaine. She had been a resident of Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg for the past several years.

LeRoy Dean Ballard, Sr., age 83 of Marengo, died Monday April 22, 2013 at Colonial Manor of Amana. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 A.M. Friday, April 26, 2013, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Watkins, Iowa, with Fr. Craig Steimel officiating. Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Marengo, Iowa. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with a Forester Rosary recited at 4 P.M. A memorial fund has been established.
LeRoy is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mildred; four sons, Ronald (Wendy) of Marengo, LeRoy Jr. (Linda) of Blairstown, Tom (Kim) of Marengo, and Bill (Lori) of Marengo; two daughters, Marie LaGrange (Ken Steelman) of Amana, and Linda Moser (Galen) of Marengo; eighteen grandchildren, Julie Siebels (Craig), Travis LaGrange, Troy LaGrange (Karen), Martin Ballard (Melissa), Sarah Heims (Brian), Angela Kruse (Jason), Melissa Unkel (Shane), Adam Ballard (Rachel Techau), Terry Ballard (Jodi), Amy Martin (Arick), Ashley Ballard (Bradley Allen), Courtney Upah (Kyle), Nathan Ballard (Stephanie), Scott Ballard (Jessi), Jeff Ballard (Shelby Usher), Christine Ballard, Tiffany Kinzenbaw (Drew), and Tyler Moser (Macie Roberts); 26 great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Matthew, Megan, Christian, Korbin, Kinzlee, Kohle, Kaitlyn, Drew, Shawn, Chelsea, Jonathan, Hailee, Lacey, Aric, Brandon, Ariel, Jaidyn, Logan, Emma, Kiley, Kinley, Maddox, Londyn, Troy and Trevor; and a great-great granddaughter, Elizabeth. Also surviving are a brother Richard Ballard and a sister, Helen Plotz, both of Marengo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Harry, Jim, Bob and Edmond, two sisters, Estelle Kensler and Irene Frimml; and a grandson Nicholas Ballard.
LeRoy Dean Ballard was born June 29, 1929, south of Watkins, Iowa, the son of Adrian James and J. Esther Whitfield Ballard. He received his education in a one room country school house near his home and spent his youth helping his father with the family farm. On October 30, 1951 he married Mildred Shramek of Swisher, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo. The couple made their home on the family farm and raised six children.
A lifelong farmer, LeRoy loved John Deere tractors, raising cattle, and checking the fields on his Gator. He also loved spending time with his family and listening to polka music. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Watkins and the Catholic Order of Foresters.
LeRoy will be remembered as a kind, loving and hardworking man, who loved farming, his wife, and his family.

Gene Joseph “Pete” Van Waus, age 80, formerly of Victor, died Monday, April 22, 2013 at Brooklyn Community Estate, Brooklyn. Private family services will be held. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements. Memorials and condolences may be directed to Russell Van Waus, Box 502, Victor, Iowa 52347.
Gene is survived by his step-daughter, Deb York; his nephews, Bill VanWaus, Dave VanWaus, Russell VanWaus and Daniel VanWaus, and a niece, Joan VanWaus Robinson. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Charles VanWaus and a nephew, Thomas.
Gene Joseph Van Waus was born September 20, 1932 in Victor, Iowa, the son of Arnold and Lylia Mitchell VanWaus. He graduated from St. John’s Catholic High School in Victor and served in the U.S. Army for 2 years, stationed in Germany and Belgium during the Korean War. Gene farmed and also worked for Krauss Furniture in Amana. Gene married Ruth Slaymaker in 1963 in Ladora. He was a member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Victor. Besides farming, Gene enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

Nora Darlene Kinsinger, age 92 of Wellman, died Friday, March 22, 2013 at Parkview Manor in Wellman, Iowa following an extended illness. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, April 27, 2013 at West Union Mennonite Church, rural Wellman. Family graveside services will be held 1 hour prior to the service. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is assisting with arrangements.
Nora is survived by a son Ed Kinsinger and wife Doris, of Parnell, Iowa, and six grandchildren.

Joyce Ann Mumm, age 77 of Williamsburg, Iowa, died Thursday, April 18, 2013 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa . Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, St. Paul Lutheran Church, Williamsburg, Iowa, with Pastor Carl Cloeter officiating. Burial: Pilot Grove Cemetery, Williamsburg. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, April 22, 2013 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to St. Paul Lutheran Church or the charity of donor’s choice.
Joyce is survived by her children, Les Mumm (Wanda) of Eureka, MT, Steve Mumm (Paula) of Urbandale, Julie Bodkins (Mike) of Altoona, and Jeff Mumm (Cindy) of Cedar Rapids; ten grandchildren, Jeremy Mumm of Marion, Allicia Mumm of Seattle, WA, Lindsay Willard of Apple Valley, MN, Sean Mumm (Natasha) of Toronto, Canada, Capt. Dustin Willard of Beale Air Force Base, CA, Lindsay Toenges (Jason) of Katy, TX, Tina Mumm of Cedar Rapids, Kyle Bodkins of Minneapolis, MN, Ashley Mumm of Cedar Rapids and Jarred Mumm of Dubuque; and three great-grandchildren, Hayden and Kayla Toenges of Katy, TX and Jackson Wissink of Seattle, WA. Also surviving are her siblings, Merlyn Martinson of Marengo, Milford Martinson (Nancy) of Williamsburg, and Leona Loyd (Luke) of Cedar Rapids; along with two sisters-in-law, Irene Siems of Amana, and Marcella Martinson of Marion.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dwight, a brother Irvin Martinson, and a sister Norma Siems.
Joyce Ann Martinson was born June 18, 1935 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Carl Elmer Martinson and Mathilda Rose Hunzelman Martinson. She attended the Hilton Consolidated School in Conroy and married Dwight Mumm on September 7, 1950 in Knoxville, Iowa. Joyce assisted her husband on the farm, raised her children, and also was a waitress at the Landmark Restaurant and Colony Haus. She also worked at Amana Refrigeration for several years. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Joyce loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed gardening, her flowers, and bird watching. She liked to travel and camp. She frequently would meet up with the Colony Haus girls, enjoyed a cup of coffee and a meal with her siblings, and also went to coffee with her best friend Leo Lortz. In the quiet moments she enjoyed working crossword puzzles and texting.

Verneta Irene Gorsh Nowotny Gordon, age 87 of Victor, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 surrounded by her family. Per her wishes there will be no visitation or funeral. Her family will gather privately at a later date. Burial will be in Victor Memorial Cemetery. Condolences and memorials may be sent to the family at PO Box 509, Victor, IA 52347. Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn is assisting the family with arrangements.
Verneta is survived by her sons Marty Nowotny and wife Terri of Victor, and Randy Nowotny of Brooklyn, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Harold and Earl, ten brothers and sisters and an infant granddaughter and grandson.
Verneta Irene Gorsh was born March 20, 1926 in rural Millersburg, Iowa, the daughter of Frank Gorsh and Ethel Lacy Gorsh. She attended the one-room country schools. Verneta married Harold Edward Nowotny on January 11, 1948 in Cedar Rapids. They shared the celebration with another couple in a double ceremony. She farmed with her family and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Verneta also worked at Amana Refrigeration for 25 years.
