Dorothy K. Martinson, age 84 of Williamsburg, died Sunday evening, April 14, 2013 at Colonial Manor of Amana. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, April 18, 2013, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead, with Rev. Terry Small officiating. Burial will be in East York Cemetery, Williamsburg. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy is survived by her son Duane of Williamsburg; her daughter Doris Kinsinger and husband Ed of Parnell; ten grandchildren, Tricia Schutterle (Wayne) of Norway, Tonya Grambo (Rick) of Minot, ND, Rachel Trimpe of West Amana, Shawn Martinson of Williamsburg, Corey Martinson of Williamsburg, Nick Martinson (Steph) of Ely, Vince Martinson (Niki) of Williamsburg, Jared Kinsinger of Wellman, Candra Nickell (James) of Wellman and Gabe Kinsinger of North Liberty; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert in 2011, a son Dale in 1982, a brother Clifford Vogt, and a sister, Ethel Stanerson.
Dorothy Katherine Ann Vogt was born November 3, 1928 in rural Homestead, Iowa, the daughter of Edward A. and Rose Kuhnle Vogt. She attended St. John’s Lutheran School, Homestead, and graduated from Marengo High School in 1946. Following graduation, Dorothy worked at the Homestead Sandwich Shop. She married Robert O. Martinson on April 8, 1948 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead. Besides being a homemaker, wife and mother, Dorothy was a pie and roll baker for over seventeen years for the Colony Village Restaurant. Dorothy loved gardening and her flowers, especially her African violets. She enjoyed watching sports, especially the Cubs and Hawkeyes. Dorothy was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Homestead.

Robert Lewis McCulley, Sr. age 94 of Brooklyn, died Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Grinnell Regional Medical Center, Grinnell, Iowa. Memorial Service: 2 P.M. Sunday, April 14, 2013, Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn with Rev. John Dodds officiating. Military Honors will be conducted at the church. A memorial fund has been established. There will be no visitation, as Robert has donated his body to medical research. Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn is assisting the family with arrangements.
Robert is survived by his children, Marie Braswell (Bob) of Victor, and Robert L. McCulley, Jr. (Deb) of Montezuma; nine grandchildren, Christopher Braswell (Ayako) of Okinawa, Leesie Braswell of Victor, Michelle Jarnagin (Dave) of Des Moines, Katherine Braswell (Cody Daugherty) of Newton, Matthew McCulley of Cedar Falls, Alex McCulley of Williamsburg, Shelby McCulley of Marshalltown, Robert McCulley III of Montezuma, and Andy McCulley of Montezuma; four great-grandchildren, Jazmin, Noel and Sonia Braswell of Okinawa, and Cooper Daugherty of Newton. Also surviving are his siblings, Jean Williams of Barnes City, and Helen James of New Sharon; along with his sisters-in-law, Barb McCulley of New Sharon, Barb McCulley of Brooklyn, Elaine McCulley of Brooklyn, Margaret McCulley of Grinnell, and Marie McCulley of Montana.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Vernon, Marvin, Donald, William, Kenneth “Tunney”, David and Harlan; two sisters, Peg Simpson and Elizabeth Acord; two siblings in infancy, Rassy and Catherine, his wife Elsie, and a special friend Beverly Weiermann.
Robert Lewis McCulley was born February 8, 1919 in rural Thornburg, Iowa, the son of John Henry and Catherine Capehart McCulley. He graduated from Gibson High School in 1936. Robert served in the U.S. Army for 4 years. He married Elsie Marie Ploog on June 1, 1941 in Kirksville, MO. He was employed over the years with the Poweshiek County Home, Amana Refrigeration, for Skinny Heinshoot as a farm hand, D.W. Hubbard Lumber Company, Fullerton Lumber Company and the Poweshiek County Bridge Crew. Robert was a member and elder of the Brooklyn Church of the Brethren until it’s closing, then he joined Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels, and enjoyed playing his guitar for folks at the nursing homes. Robert loved the outdoors, and enjoyed his counselor position at church camp, telling stories and working with his hands. He went sky diving at the ages of 80, 82, and 90. He drove people to their doctor appointments and to church services, and he loved to set up his “bubble machine”.

Atellia J. “Till” Kinzenbaw, age 86 of Marengo, died Monday, May 13, 2013 at Rose Haven Nursing Home following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, May 18, 2013, First Presbyterian Church, Marengo, Iowa with Rev. Diane Miller officiating. Burial will be in Koszta Cemetery, rural Marengo. Visitation: 4 to 8 P.M. Thursday, May 16, 2013 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established. (Please note visitation and service dates.)
Till is survived by her children, Faythe Roberts (Jim), Dean Jr. “Bill”, Doyle, Dale (Char), Doug (Deanne), Denise Kaestner (William), all of Marengo, and Dave of Phoenix, AZ; thirteen grandchildren, Brenda McCaw (Chet), Brad Roberts (Paula), Mindy Sherman (Jon), Neil Kinzenbaw(Michelle), Candie Tow (Mike), Brent Kinzenbaw, Justin Kinzenbaw, Jenilee Peterson (Ross), Drew Kinzenbaw (Tiffany), Darrin Kinzenbaw (Katie Cronbaugh) Danelle Kinzenbaw, Kailey Kaestner and Megan Kaestner; 18 great-grandchildren, Amber and Blake McCaw, Connor, Wade, Brooke and Cole Roberts, Mikayla, Dallas and Derek Sherman, Miranda Bernard, Mackinze, Clayton and Cassie Kinzenbaw, Dalton and Joshua Crawford, Gunner Paulson, and Nola and Henry Peterson; and a great-great-granddaughter, Kenlyn McCaw.
Also surviving are two sisters, Anita Parnin of Phoenix, AZ and Vava Heller (George) of Marengo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dean, a son Denny, a daughter-in-law, Nicolette and a brother Darold “Bud”Solbrig
Atellia June Kinzenbaw was born May 16, 1926 in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Dr. A.I. and Ruby Port Solbrig. She graduated from Marengo High School with the Class of 1944. Till was united in marriage to Dean William Kinzenbaw on October 24, 1945 at First Presbyterian Church in Marengo. Till was a wife, mother and homemaker. She also was a school cook and a teacher’s aid for special needs children at the Iowa Valley schools. She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in Marengo, and a charter member of the Happy Homemakers Club. Till was a 50 year member of the Marengo American Legion Auxiliary. Her passions in life were her family, grandchildren, church and friends.

Richard P. Henry, age 69 of Ottumwa, died Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at his home. Memorial Services: 1:00 P.M. Saturday, June 8, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, Iowa with Rev. John Reynolds, Jr. officiating. Inurnment will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Richard Henry Memorial Fund in care of Kloster Funeral Home, PO Box 341, Brooklyn, IA 52211.
Richard is survived by his mother Wilma Henry of Burleson, TX; three brothers, James Henry (Linda) of Mansfield, TX, Joe (Helen) of Newton, and Dale of Mansfield; three sisters, Doris Price (Art) of Crowley, TX, Patricia Van Tomme (Gary) of Brooklyn, and Sheryl Sanders of Arlington, TX; along with many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Therald in 1994.
Richard Paul Henry was born January 15, 1944 in Brooklyn, Iowa, the son of Therald and Wilma Lane Henry. He enjoyed his cats, watching movies, and genealogy.

Christine Anne Moon, age 60 of Belle Plaine, died Saturday, May 11, 2013 at her home. Private family services will be held at a later date. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by her husband Michael Moon; a daughter Michelle McCord (Jason Hudepohl) of Marengo; three grandchildren Brayden, Averee and Kamryn Hudepohl; two brothers, Mark Hanks of Marion, and Mike Hanks of Cedar Rapids; and a sister Terry Primrose (Dennis) of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents, Aaron and Darlene Vaughn Hanks.
Christine Anne Hanks was born July 23, 1952 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Aaron and Darlene Vaughn Hanks. She graduated from Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids with the Class of 1970. Christine was an inspector at Amana Refrigeration for 35 years. She married Michael Moon on September 29, 2000 in Marengo, Iowa. Christine enjoyed cooking, and Nascar, especially Tony Stewart. She was a Kansas City Chiefs fan. But most of all, Christine enjoyed being called “Maga Moon” by her grandchildren and spending time with them.

Bert Richard Gillette, husband, father and friend, passed way peacefully at his home on Sunday, May 26, 2013. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn, with Rev. John Dodds officiating. Inurnment will be in Forest City, Iowa at a later date. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Bert Gillette Scholarship Fund. Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn is in charge of arrangements.
Bert is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kathryn; his children, Richard (Jennifer) of Pinole, CA, grandson Matthew Gillette (Marissa), and great-grandson Milo; Kurt (Mary) of Springville, granddaughter Nichole Jack of Cedar Rapids; and Diane (Susan Eppel) of Waddell, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Frank and George.
Bert Richard Gillette was born December 16, 1922 in Forest City, Iowa, the son of Bert and Hilda Shefloe Gillette. He spent his youth in Ellington Township on his father’s farm. He spoke with pride of his Saturday night pugilistic skills on the square in Forest City, taking on all comers from Forest City and the surrounding communities. He graduated from Forest City High School, and then attended Waldorf College. He married Marie Ayres on September 28, 1943. She passed away July 21, 2010
Bert served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942-46 during World War II. When he returned, he earned a degree in accounting from the University of Iowa in 1949 and his law degree in 1952. Bert was employed as a regional claims manager at State Farm Insurance Company, and later was corporate counsel/vice president of State Auto Insurance Company. Bert went into private practice in 1960 and maintained a law office in Brooklyn until his retirement in 1994. He was united in marriage to Kathryn Deusler on July 16, 1966.
Bert was a 50-year member of the Masons, the Masonic Consistory, and the Kaaba Shrine in Davenport. He also was a 50-year member of the Brooklyn American Legion. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn.
Bert enjoyed pheasant hunting, fishing, and reading. He was an avid checker and cribbage player and had one “perfect” hand. He taught his children cribbage and chess while ice fishing in a cabin on Lake MilleLac. He said “Fiddler Jones” from Spoon River Anthology often reminded him of himself.
During his last year of life, he was lovingly cared for by his daughter Diane and his wife Kathryn. He is now one for the ages.

Theo F. Zscherny, age 90, of Williamsburg, formerly of Middle Amana, Iowa, died Monday, May 27 2013 at Marengo Memorial Hospital, Marengo, Iowa. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Thursday, May 30, 2013 at the Middle Amana Community Church with Elder Peter Hoehnle presiding. Burial will be in the Middle Amana Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 pm, Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at the Middle Amana Church. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of arrangements.
Theo is survived by his wife Lorraine; a son Michael Zscherny (Barbara) of Ely; a daughter Constance Bahr (Kenny) of Goshen, IN; six grandchildren, Jason Bahr of Fort Dodge, Andrew Bahr of Santa Barbara, CA, Tiffany Arnett (Jason) of Fort Wayne, IN, Lisa Brown (William) of Cedar Rapids, Amy Fulkerson (Dennis) of Lisbon, and Chad Zscherny (Joy) of Des Moines; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Minnie Metz Zscherny, a sister Leona Hill and a brother Henry.
Theodore Ferdinand Zscherny was born January 7, 1923 in Amana, Iowa, the son of Jacob and Minnie Metz Zscherny. He attended the Amana schools and served in the U.S. Marine Corp for three years, stationed in San Diego, and the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. Upon his return, Theo was employed by Iowa Steel and Iron Works, the Amana Woolen Mill and then worked at Amana Refrigeration for 22 years, retiring in 1988.
Theo married Lorraine Schaedlich on November 29, 1947 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids. The couple resided in Middle Amana, until recently when they moved to Highland Ridge in Williamsburg.
He enjoyed baseball and football, and stamp and coin collecting. He also enjoyed gardening. He also made stocking caps for the homeless veterans. He was a member of the Amana Church Society, the Amana Heritage Society, and the Marengo American Legion Post # 76.

Virgil Rex Heishman, age 79 of Brooklyn, died Saturday, May 25, 2013 at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Memorial Services: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, May 30, 2013, First Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn with Rev. John Reynolds, Jr. officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. Memorials may be contributed to the BGM Ag Scholarship, First Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn, or the Poweshiek Co. Ambulance.
Virgil is survived by his children, Stephen of Brooklyn, Susan Hopwood (Kenneth) of Montezuma, Lori Hiner (George) of Brooklyn, Brenda Hagedorn (Dan) of Grinnell and Kristi Chedester (William) of Grinnell; eight grandchildren, Nathan Hopwood (Niki) Brooklyn, Andrea Long of West Des Moines, Tricia Allen of Bismark, ND, Derek Hiner of Johnston, Emily Chedester of Grinnell, Brandon, Ashley and Mariah Mikel of Grinnell and two step-grandchildren, Dennis (Jacque) of Kirksville, MO and Clint Hagedorn of Ames; 11 great-grandchildren, Gracie Kelley-Hawkins, Ryan Hopwood, Allison Long, Jacob Long, Lucas Rand-Long, Autumn Waterbeck, Faith Allen, Hunter Hiner, Jayden Graham, Brayden Good and Elijah Hagedorn; and a brother Richard Heishman (Mary Jo) of Hastings, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mary Jane in 2008, two brothers, Darrell and Maynard and a son-in-law, Doug Mikel.
Virgil Rex Heishman was born August 24, 1933 in Brooklyn, Iowa, the son of Delmar and Margaret Ostrum Heishman. He graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1950 and served in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Smith, Arkansas. He married Mary Jane Goodrich on February 24, 1962 in Nebraska. He was a lifelong farmer in the Brooklyn area.
Virgil enjoyed bowling, antiques and TV westerns. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and loved spending time with his family, and socializing with his many friends.
