Dorothy F. Hertel, age 92, of South Amana, died Thursday, June 20, 2013 at Colonial Manor in Amana. Funeral Services: 2:00 P.M. Monday, June 24, 2013, St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Homestead with Pastor Terry Small officiating. Burial will be in the South Amana Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday, June 23, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Dorothy is survived by her children; Harold (Jeanne) Hertel of South Amana and Helen Selzer (Lial) of Homestead; three grandchildren, Scott Selzer, Neil (Rebecca) Selzer and Tim (Erica) Hertel; five great-grandchildren, Gabriel Selzer, Adrian Selzer, Carter, Dalton and Peyton Hertel. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edgar in 1981, three brothers Ralph, Barry and James Fowler; three sisters Hazel Belvins, Gladys Baugh and Mabel Clark.
Dorothy was born January 7, 1921 in Guthrie, Oklahoma, the daughter of Benjamin and Gertrude Haley Fowler. She attended school in Guthrie, Oklahoma. She married Edgar Hertel on October 19, 1938 in Kirksville, Missouri. Dorothy traveled with her husband to various states.
Dorothy was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Homestead. She especially enjoyed putting complicated puzzles together and reading. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Donald V. Morton, age 92, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital, in Cedar Rapids. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, June 15, 2013, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, with Pastors Phil Jorgensen and Lynn L’Abbe officiating. Burial with Military Honors: Cedar Memorial Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, June 14, 2013 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids. Memorials may be contributed to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church or Boy Scout Camp Waubeek. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Donald is survived by his wife, Ruth; two sons, Douglas (Nancy) of Brookings, SD, and Thomas (Pat) of Centennial, CO; a daughter Julieanne Gentz (Brian) of Ottumwa, twelve grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Charles, a sister, Mary Ethel Burrack, and a granddaughter, Rachel Denny.
Donald Vaughn Morton was born February 12, 1921 in Plankinton, South Dakota, the son of Charles Milan Morton and Lena Ethel Vaughn Morton. He graduated from Hopkinton High School, Hopkinton, Iowa and attended Lenox College in Hopkinton, and Coe College in Cedar Rapids. He served in the U.S. Navy, stationed in the Philippines and the South Pacific, during World War II. Donald married Ruth Lange on May 23, 1948 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Monticello, Iowa. The couple had just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Donald worked for Quaker Oats, drove taxi for several years, and then worked at Allis-Chalmers for 15 years. Most recently he was employed as an industrial specialist with the Defense Contract Administrative Office from 1968 - 1994, retiring from there.
Donald was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where he was a past Sunday school superintendant, church treasurer, past church council president, an elder, and also sang in the choir. He was a Boy Scout leader for Troop #39, and was a recipient of the Lamb Award, and was a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow. Donald was a member of the American Legion.

Leroy Henry Graesser, age 91 of Amana, formerly of West Amana, died Sunday, June 9, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral Service: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 12, 2013, Middle Amana Community Church with Elder Harold Pitz officiating. Burial will be in the West Amana Cemetery with military honors. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the Middle Amana Community Church. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church Society or St. Luke’s Hospice. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Leroy is survived by his wife, Betty; two sons, John (Jody) of Citrus Heights, CA, and Randy (Marcia) of South Amana; a daughter Susan Shoup (Mike) of South Amana; three grandchildren, Justin and Joshua Graesser, and Erin Shoup (fiance, Nash Albadarin). He is also survived by a brother, Henry “Heine” Graesser of Amana. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Elmer.
Leroy Henry Graesser was born June 18, 1921 in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Henry Graesser, Sr. and Frieda Berger Graesser. He graduated from the Amana High School and attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He went to work as a welder at Amana Refrigeration. Leroy served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, as a member of the Coast Guard. He returned to Amana Refrigeration following his discharge from the service. Leroy married Betty Parson on June 6, 1953 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. In 1955, he became farm manager of the West Amana Farms. He eventually became manager for all the Amana Farms, and remained as such for 30 years.
Following his retirement Leroy began building scale models of historic Amana buildings. He actively volunteered in the community and was a tour guide for many of the colony visitors.
Leroy was a member of the Amana Church Society, a former member the Amana School Board, and he served on the Amana Society Board of Directors. He was a founding member of the Amana Heritage Society, and also served on the 1988 World Ag Expo Committee.
The Graesser family would like to thank the staff of St. Luke’s Hospice for the wonderful care and compassion extended to Leroy in his final days.

Timothy Dale Williams, age 61 of Brooklyn, Iowa, died Friday morning, June 7, 2013 at his home. There will be an informal memorial gathering with the family on Sunday, June 16, 2013 at the Brooklyn Activity Center at 3:00 P.M.
Tim is survived by his wife Carol Kay; his mother, Thelma Darlene Williams of Newton, two sons Aaron (Jennifer) of Grinnell and Stephen Williams of Florida; a daughter, Cari Ward of Florida; four grandsons, Damon and Chase Williams of Grinnell and Nathan and Austin Ward of Florida; two granddaughters, Emily and Shelby Williams of Florida; a sister, Deana Williams of Newton; and step-children, Rhoda Craig, Renae Polton, Rick Houser, and Rone Cahow.
He was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Robin Weiland.
Timothy Dale Williams was born October 13, 1951 in Newton, Iowa. He attended Newton High School and served our country during the Viet Nam War as a soldier with the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Silver Star for actions taken while serving with the 7th Calvary.
Tim enjoyed spending time with his “grandboys” as he called them. He was able to take them golfing, and started a yearly tradition of picking out a Christmas tree and cutting it down. He was looking forward to his grandsons coming out to fish his pond this summer.
The last years of his life, he enjoyed spending time with his wife Carol, his family and friends. He enjoyed going to the “office” and playing cards with his friends and helping his good friend Gary Kriegel.

Karen Louise Kline, age 89 of Brooklyn, died Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell, Iowa. Funeral Mass: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, June 8, 2013, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Brooklyn, Iowa with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Inurnment will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn. Memorials may be contributed to the Brooklyn Food Bank. There will be no visitation. Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn is handling the arrangements.
Karen is survived by a brother Eldon Kline (Brenda) of Cherry Valley, IL; a sister Gail Schiltz of Sterling, IL; two sisters-in-law Marcena Kline of Brooklyn and Trudy Kline of Doud, IA and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, Alford Dean, William and Giles Kline.
Karen was born October 16, 1923 in rural Brooklyn, Iowa, the daughter of Nicholas and Goldie Fern Smith Kline. She received her education in the Poweshiek County schools and graduated in 1941. She entered the convent of the Third Order of St. Francis, taking her final vows in 1955. Karen went on to become a registered nurse, working at several hospitals, including St. Francis in Waterloo, and Skiff in Newton, Iowa. She took a leave of absence to care for her aging father in 1974. She returned to nursing and worked at many area care facilities including Brooklyn, Grinnell and Amana. Karen enjoyed crocheting, knitting and gardening. She was a quiet person and enjoyed the birds and animals of this world. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn.

Richard P. Henry, age 69 of Ottumwa, died Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at his home. Memorial Services: 1:00 P.M. Saturday, June 8, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, Iowa with Rev. John Reynolds, Jr. officiating. Inurnment will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Richard Henry Memorial Fund in care of Kloster Funeral Home, PO Box 341, Brooklyn, IA 52211.
Richard is survived by his mother Wilma Henry of Burleson, TX; three brothers, James Henry (Linda) of Mansfield, TX, Joe (Helen) of Newton, and Dale of Mansfield; three sisters, Doris Price (Art) of Crowley, TX, Patricia Van Tomme (Gary) of Brooklyn, and Sheryl Sanders of Arlington, TX; along with many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Therald in 1994.
Richard Paul Henry was born January 15, 1944 in Brooklyn, Iowa, the son of Therald and Wilma Lane Henry. He enjoyed his cats, watching movies, and genealogy.

Dorothy M. Zuber, age 96, of Middle Amana, died Saturday, June 1, 2013 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House, in Hiawatha, Iowa. Funeral Services: 1:00 P.M. Tuesday afternoon, June 4, 2013, Middle Amana Community Church with Elder Alan Trumpold officiating. Burial will be in the Middle Amana Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, June 3, 2013 at the Middle Amana Community Church. Memorials may be contributed to the Amana Church Society or the charity of the donor’s choice. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy is survived by her son Robert (Mary) of Middle Amana; two daughters, Kathy Schwarting (Bob) of Middle Amana and Carol Ann Vogt (John) of Marengo; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; a sister Florence Schuerer (George) of Amana; sister-in-law, Connie Zuber and step sister-in-law Louise Zuber, both of Amana; and step brother-in-law, Jack Zuber (Waunita) of Hiawatha.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1976, a brother Bill Zuber, a sister Margaret at age 2, and a grandson Christopher Vogt in 2010.
Dorothy Marie Zuber was born April 20, 1917 in Middle Amana, Iowa, the daughter of William Carl and Emilie Murbach Zuber. She received her education in the Amana schools, and went to work at the Amana Woolen Mill. Dorothy married William Henry Zuber on June 11, 1938 at the Middle Amana Church. They moved into the family home and resided there for their entire life. Dorothy also helped her husband at the Middle Amana General Store. Later, she became a cook for her brother, Bill Zuber at “the Dugout” in Homestead, and became well-known for her delicious cooking. She retired from there at the age of 83.
She enjoyed music, reading, and crossword puzzles. She loved gardening, baking, cooking, and “Dean Martin”. She was a member of the Amana Church Society. Dorothy’s family was so very important to her and she cherished the time she spent with them, especially cooking big meals on Thursday nights for them. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her and knew her.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids, and the staff of the Dennis and Donna Oldorf House of Hospice, for the loving care of our mother and grandmother.

Janice I. Meier, age 79 of Marengo, died Saturday, June 1, 2013 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo, Iowa. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, June 4, 2013, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo, with Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, June 3, 2013 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Janice is survived by three sons, Steven (Donna) of Marengo, Greg (Pam) of Marengo, and Scott (Beth) of Maryland Heights, MO; a daughter, Julie Storck of Marengo; 12 grandchildren, Allison Kittelson (Josh) VanCouver, WA, Marcy DeMeulenaere (Dale) Marengo, Daniel Meier (Mallory) Marengo, Chase Meier, Marengo, Emily Meier (Justin) Williamsburg, Adam Meier, Marengo, Jordan, Travis, and Taylor Storck of Marengo, and Madeline, Evan, and Joseph Meier of Maryland Heights, MO; 8 great-grandchildren, Bodin, Jack, Gunnar, and Ryder Kittelson, Kadynce, Anna, and Gavin DeMeulenaere, and Kinslee Meier; a sister-in-law Janice M. Meier of Marengo; brothers-in-law Dennis (Glenda) Meier of Cedar Rapids, Cliff Danielson of East Moline, IL, and Gene Weih of Tipton and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Allan A. Meier in 2002, a son David in 1991, two brothers, Robert and Richard Bruckman, a sister Marilyn Morehead, and several sisters and brothers-in-law.
Janice Irene Bruckman was born November 9, 1933 in Rock Island, Illinois, the daughter of Joseph and Rhoda Jessen Bruckman. She graduated from Calamus High School in 1951. Janice married Allan Alfred August Meier on September 26, 1953 at Faith Lutheran Church in Calamus. They resided in Dixon, Iowa until 1959, when they moved to Marengo. Jan was a homemaker and mother, but also worked outside the home at different times. She worked at the Rock Island Arsenal from 1951 -1953, and held several retail jobs at Younkers, VonMaur, Carters and OshKosh. Her special joy was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid Cubs and Hawkeyes fan. She played bridge with several clubs over the years. Her one special treat for the last several years was to go to the Tama casino and play the slot machines.
Jan was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo, and the Marengo Legion Auxiliary.
