Mary E. Cronbaugh, age 61 of Marengo, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at her home, after surviving 8 years with cancer. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Monday, July 8, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, Iowa with Chaplain Mike Patterson officiating. Burial will be in Koszta Cemetery, rural Marengo. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday, July 7, 2013 at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.
Mary is survived by her husband Marlo; three daughters, Mariah Andrews (Christian) of Mount Vernon, Fran Rathjen (Kyle) of Kansas City, MO, and Virginia Smith (Adam) of Grinnell; seven grandchildren, Sophia, Gus, Payton, Logan, Makayla, Dylan, and Holden; a brother John Leeper (Jackie Meyer) of Blairstown; five step-children, Tim Cronbaugh, Donnie (Missie) Cronbaugh, Darrell Cronbaugh (Joanne) all of Marengo, Deanne Cronbaugh of North Liberty, and Samantha (Bill) of North Liberty; numerous step-grandchildren, and many step great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Michael Leeper, and a sister in infancy.
Mary Elizabeth Leeper was born September 1, 1951 in Kirksville, MO, the daughter of Denver and Elizabeth McCollum Leeper. She graduated from Williamsburg High School, Williamsburg, Iowa, in 1969, and attended Truman State College in Kirksville. She received her Licensed Practical Nursing degree from Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids. Mary was united in marriage to Marlo Cronbaugh on February 14, 1995 in Marengo, Iowa. She enjoyed cooking, knitting and crocheting, and was an accomplished seamstress.
In earlier years, Mary worked as a waitress. She spent several years working at Casey’s, and when she received her nursing degree, was employed at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo.

Dorothy Joan Von Lienen, age 75, of Macon, MO, formerly of Marengo, died July 16, 2013 at Columbia University Hospital, in Columbia, MO, following a long illness. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, July 20, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, with Rev. Diane Townsley officiating. Inurnment will be in the Marengo Cemetery. The family will receive friends after 1:00 P.M. Saturday, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Randy Johnson Memorial Fund in Macon, MO.
Dorothy was born on January 27, 1938 in Iowa City, IA. She grew up in Marengo, IA and graduated from Marengo High School. Dorothy married George Von Lienen on October 6, 1956 and they shared 57 wonderful years together. Dorothy has been a resident of Macon, MO since 2000.
In addition to her loving husband George, Dorothy is survived by her four children, John Von Lienen and wife Barbara of Sykesville, MD, Lee Von Lienen and wife Tina of Bennett, CO, Peggy Kaden and husband Norm of Columbia, MO and Scott and wife Margaret of Chesterfield, MO, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and her sister, Ella Mae Sperry of Cedar Rapids, IA.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Claude and Loreen Fuller, her sister Marge McFarland, her brothers Clough “Bub” Fuller, Marion “Jose” Fuller and Robert “Cobb” Fuller.

Charity Lynn Bryan, age 34 of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Montezuma, died Monday evening, July 8, 2013 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, July 15, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, Iowa, with Pastor Gene Carpenter officiating. In addition, there will be a Memorial Service at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Washington, Iowa, with a potluck to follow the service. A memorial fund has been established.
Charity is survived by her mother, Tina Skates (Russ) of Fallon, NV; her father Kyle Bryan (Skye) of Searsboro, IA; her brother Brandon (Lindsey) of Pearl River, LA; two sisters, Kasey Bryan of Grinnell, and Candy Boyd of New Sharon; a niece, Charley Bryan, and a nephew Kye Bryan. Also surviving is her grandmother, Doris Bryan of Lynnville, IA.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jack and Betty Malloy, Charlie Bryan, and Janet Anderson, an aunt Jackie Griffith, and and an uncle Keith Bryan.
Charity was born November 9, 1978 in Honolulu, HI, the daughter of Kyle and Tina Malloy Bryan. She completed her education in the Grinnell schools in 1998. Charity enjoyed PlayStation, Tweety Bird, talking on the phone and laughing. She was loved, and will be missed by her family, friends, and all that knew her.

Florence L. Mumby, age 96, of Williamsburg, Iowa, formerly of Marengo, died Friday, July 5, 2013 at Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, July 9, 2013, First Presbyterian Church, Marengo with Rev. Diane Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 5 to 7 P.M. Monday, July 8, 2013 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to First Presbyterian Church, Marengo, or Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg.
Florence is survived by her son, Larry and wife Mary of Denver, Iowa; two grandsons, Adam (Lori) of Waterloo, and Christopher of Marion. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Orville, and two sisters, Elizabeth Jacoby and Alice White.
Florence Linda Gates was born April 8, 1917 in rural Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Merritt J. Gates and Luella Whitehill Gates. She graduated from Carson High School in Marengo, and married Orville Walter Mumby on August 3, 1941 at the Presbyterian Manse in Marengo. The couple farmed in the area for many years. They moved to Highland Ridge in 2009. Orville passed away in 2011.
Florence was a loving wife, mother and homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, raising chickens, sewing and quilting. She looked forward to the visits from her grandsons. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Marengo, DAR and PEO.

Margaret Ann Cox Schulte Schott, age 93, formerly of South Amana, died Monday, August 5, 2013 at Crestview Care and Rehabilitation Center in West Branch, Iowa. Funeral Mass: 10:30 A.M. Saturday, August 10, 2013, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oxford, Iowa, with Fr. Greg Steckel officiating. Burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Oxford. Visitation: 5 to 8 P.M. Friday, August 9, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with a Rosary recited at 8 P.M. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oxford or Old St. Michael’s, Holbrook. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by her four children: Bernard Francis (Ann) Schulte of Litchfield, Minnesota, Dr. James Richard (Sharon) Schulte of Strawberry Point, Iowa, Margaret B. C. (Richard) Reihman of Oxford, Iowa, Mary Jo Ann Ginger Schulte (Frank Ives) of Shoreline, Washington; Grandchildren: Theresa (David) Parent, Carol (Clint) Anderson, Kim (Tony) Keller, Crisi (Jon) Shoutz, Tom (Kim) Schulte, Randy (Kenvi) Parvin, Christopher Schulte, Peter Schulte, Elizabeth (Marc) Dierickx, Karin (Gary) Kee, Karla ( Bill) Duwa, Julie ( Brian) Rustand, Joy Reihman, Joseph (Ann) Auterman, Henry Ives, Shaina Ives; Step-Grandchildren: Domanic Hogendorn, Shawn Hogendorn, Dustin (Katie) Hogendorn; Great-Grandchildren: Adam Parent, Molly Parent, Amanda Johnson, Michael Johnson, Autumn Johnson, Morgan Johnson, Andrew Keller, Christopher Keller, Jocelyn Keller, Kathryn Keller, Laura Shoutz, Sara Shoutz, Abagayle Shoutz, Aleisha Shoutz, Jonathon Shoutz, Haley Parvin, Ainsley Parvin, Joseph Schulte, James Schulte, Isabella Schulte, Pierce Schulte, Truman Dierickx, Lena Kee, Sam Duwa, Violet Rustand; Step Great grandchildren: Nastazia Hogendorn, Makasha Hogendorn, Michael Hogendorn, Emmanuel Hogendorn, Alejandra Hogendorn, Carter Hogendorn, Brady Hogendorn; Great- great grandchildren: Tucker Johnson, and Kenny Johnson. Also surviving are two sisters : Colleen Keith of Iowa City, and Emily Ruth of Oxford; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands Bernard C. Schulte, and Francis Schott; Grandchildren (in infancy) Margaret Schulte, John Schulte, Charles Schulte, Luke Schulte; sisters: Maureen Hamilton, Mary Vest, Dorothy Schultz, and JoAnne Neuzil; and brothers: Joseph Cox and Richard Cox.
Close to her Irish family and proud of her heritage that included early settlers of York Township and the Holbrook area she would tell you that in her family she had: “six sisters and each of the sisters had two brothers.”
Margaret A. Schott was born January 1920 in York Township, Iowa County, Iowa, daughter of James Davis Cox and Catherine Bernadette (Dolly) Barry. Margaret grew up on the farm where she rode in a horse-drawn hack to attend country school and graduated in 1939 from Cosgrove High School. As a small child she was sent into the fire box to clean ash cinders from the steam engine during threshing season.
Margaret married Bernard Schulte January 30, 1940 at St. Peter’s in Cosgrove. They farmed many years near Walford, Holbrook, Parnell, North Liberty and Marengo. Tending chickens for egg money, a yard of ponies, helping in the fields and raising family defined her early years. Bernard died in 1977. She married Francis Schott in 1978, and they farmed near Kozta along the Iowa River bottom.
Margaret was one of the initial employees at the opening of the Marengo Memorial Hospital in 1956. Later working in UI Hospital Kitchen, she also was employed as an aide in the radiology department working with Dr. Maurice Van Allen. She was employed with Owens Brush for over a decade specializing in machine and plant maintenance, retiring in 1977.
Never one to suffer fools gladly, she is remembered for her hard work, tenacity, deft candor, and resiliency. Always ready to “make a long story short, ” you could depend on it to get longer.

David W. Jeck, age 56, of Coralville, formerly of High Amana, died Thursday, August 1, 2013 at his home. Memorial Service: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 7, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, with Elder Emilie Hoppe officiating. Inurnment will be in High Amana Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
He is survived by his children, Jeremy Jeck of Cedar Rapids, Jason Jeck of Walford, and Jennifer Jeck of Cedar Rapids; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Coghlan of Cedar Rapids; a sister Julie Jeck of High Amana, and a nephew Joe Schumacher.
David was preceded in death by his mother Mary Edwards Jeck, his father Howard “Buddy” Jeck, and a daughter in infancy.
David William Jeck was born January 29, 1957 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Howard “Buddy” Jeck and Mary Ellen Edwards Jeck. He graduated from Amana High School with the Class of 1975, and married Diane Bierman on August 22, 1975 in Amana. The couple later divorced. David was employed as a meat cutter, and retired from the Amana Meat Market after several years. He was a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and in earlier years was a boy scout and on the swim team. He enjoyed westerns, especially John Wayne, World War II history and memorabilia, hunting, and the mountains of Colorado. He watched “Two and a Half Men” and “Big Bang Theory”. He liked ice cream, feeding the birds, and giving Julie’s dog, Hannah, belly rubs.

Valere Albert Lavent, 93, of Brooklyn, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home, Thursday, August 1, 2013. Graveside Services: 8:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 6, 2013, Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery, Brooklyn, Iowa with military honors. There will be a visitation from 5 to 7 P.M. Monday, August 5, 2013 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lyme Disease Foundation or Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Valere was born January 5, 1920, to Rene Lavent and Mary Malfait Lavent, in Brooklyn. He attended rural country schools completing the 8th grade. He was united in marriage to Francine Johnston on February 9, 1945.
Valere possessed a passion for flying machines from the very young age of 6. When a traveling barnstormer came to town, he talked his parents into letting him take his first ride in a WW I “Jennie” for a penny a pound.
After serving in the Army Air Corps during WW II, Valere turned his passion into his profession by constructing an airport along Hwy 6 two miles northeast of Brooklyn where he operated Val Air Activities, an air-taxi service contracting with General Telephone of the Midwest and others. In 1998, the airport was sold and is currently home to Skydive Iowa. He was an active member of the Brooklyn Flying Club in the 1950s and 1960s where he also gave flying lessons for many years. He was a member of the Brooklyn American Legion & various aviation societies.
Valere enjoyed a lifetime of creativity, remodeling homes, building an experimental aircraft, creating tools, and farming. He also enjoyed his family, growing flowers, bird watching, dancing, and playing checkers.
Valere is survived by his three children, Douglas Lavent, Montezuma, Debra Lavent and Valerie Blain, Arlington, TX; six grandchildren, Kenneth Lavent, Montezuma; Wendy Lavent (Marcellus) Amatangelo, Des Moines; Erin (Doty) and husband Dr. Ryan Senger, Blacksburg, VA; Nathan Doty and wife Jordan, Mansfield, TX; Jacob Blain, Arlington, TX; and Jillian (Blain) Sikes and husband Ron, Falls Church, VA; and two great grandchildren, Tori Streich, Cresco, IA; and Jackson Doty, Mansfield, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 67 years, brothers George and Marcel, sisters Margaret and Madeleine, son-in-law, Curtis Blain and daughter-in-law, Linda (Audas) Lavent.

Glen W. Langlas, age 95 of Williamsburg, died Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg. Memorial Service: 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 6, 2013, First Presbyterian Church, Williamsburg, with Rev. Kip Murphy officiating. V.F.W. Services will follow at the church. Inurnment will be at a later date. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Monday, August 5, 2013 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be contributed to First Presbyterian Church or Highland Ridge in Williamsburg.
Glen is survived by his wife Evelyn; a niece Margaret Stein of Chicago, a nephew Bill Schmidt of Indialantic, Florida, and step-children, Don O’Brien (Cathy) of Ankeny, Mike O’Brien (Mic) of Marion, and Dennis O’Brien (Diane) of Dublin, OH, Lois Payment (Gary) of Coon Rapids, MN, and Barb Kimm (Joel) of Norway, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Marian Schmidt.
Glen Willard Langlas was born April 29, 1918 in rural Marengo, Iowa, the son of William Charles Langlas and Ella Wiese Langlas. He received his education in the Iowa County schools, and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 - 46. He was an air transport commander, stationed in England, France, Germany and Belgium. Glen returned to the states and farmed until 1956, when he started a nitrogen fertilizer business. He sold the business ten years later to Farmers Coop in Conroy and continued working with them in the agronomy field until his retirement in 1984. Glen married Evelyn O’Brien on August 19, 1982 in Camdenton, MO.
Glen was a member of the Marengo American Legion Post #76 and the Williamsburg VFW Post #8797, where he served as commander for a year. Glen enjoyed ballroom dancing. While he was in the service, he met Bob Hope and Jerry Colona. He enjoyed playing baseball, and was an avid Cubs and Hawkeye fan. He belonged to the I-Club for over 40 years. Glen also was a member of the Marengo Golf Club, and the First Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg.
