Milton G. Heitman, age 89 of Marengo, died Monday, July 29, 2013 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral Mass: 10:30 A.M. Friday, August 2, 2013, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo with Fr. Joseph Roost officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo. Visitation: 4 to 7:30 P.M. Thursday, August 1, 2013 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with a Scripture Service at 7:30 P.M. A memorial fund has been established.
Milton is survived by three sons, George of Altoona, Leon (Joni) of Cedar Rapids, and Dwight (Denise) of Marengo; five daughters, Angela Heitman of Maquoketa, Susan Fultz (Terry) of Ames, Stephanie Manning (Ray) of Iowa City, Mary Pat Heitman (Pat Coyle) of Iowa City and Renee Drost (Don) of Pella; eleven grandchildren, Cole Heitman (Jessica), Iisha Heitman (Troy Martin), Arianna Heitman, Danielle and Cerissa Fultz, Kent and Abby Heitman, Heather Alford (Steve), Andrew Heitman (Brittni), Megan Albertsen (Caleb), and Ty Drost (Lauren); and five great-grandchildren, Tenley Heitman, Ayden and Braylon Drost, Teagan and Buffy Jordan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 63 years, Mary Lavonne in 2010, and three siblings, Wanda Moser, Glova Sheda and Wilbur Heitmann.
Milton George Heitman was born May 6, 1924 in Sumner Township, near Marengo, Iowa, the son of George Martin and Rosa Kathryn Conrad Heitman. He married Mary LaVonne Hildman on January 23, 1947 in Waterloo, Iowa. Milton was a farmer in the area for many years. He also worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo, the Knights of Columbus, a member and past president of the Iowa County Cattlemen Association, and belonged to multiple collector associations and clubs.
Milton was an avid collector, but his most prized collection was his family and many friends that he accumulated over his lifetime. He always looked forward to his Wednesday morning coffees with his country church friends.

Robert A. “Rob” Evans, age 58 of Brooklyn, died Saturday, July 27, 2013 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center, Grinnell, Iowa. Funeral Service: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 31, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn with Dennis Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. A memorial fund has been established.
Robert is survived by his parents, Robert J. and Glenna of Brooklyn; his sister Karen Soliday (Frank) of Ankeny; two nephews, Mike Soliday and Bart Soliday of Ankeny, and several cousins.
Robert was preceded in death by his grandparents, Earl and Alice Swindal Evans, and James and Gertrude Kenyon Keller.
Robert A. Evans was born October 5, 1954 in Grinnell, Iowa, the son of Robert John and Glenna Faye Keller Evans. He graduated from B.G.M. High School with the Class of 1973. Robert was a truck driver and farmer. He also worked for Monsanto and Nagel Farms. Robert enjoyed restoring antique tractors, and collecting scale model tractors. He traveled to visit Navy battle ships and also enjoyed watching World War II combat movies.

Leah W. “Minnie” Maas, age 101, of Williamsburg, died Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Friday, July 26, 2013, St. Paul Lutheran Church, Williamsburg with Rev. Carl Cloeter officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Homestead. Visitation: 9:30 A.M. until service time on Friday, July 26, at the church. Memorials may be contributed to Lutheran Interparish Schools, Williamsburg. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Minnie is survived by her daughters, Lillian Mae Ficken (Bill) of Cedar Rapids, and Kathleen Ann Gable (Gary) of Snohomish, WA; five grandchildren, Gary Ficken (Sally) of Cedar Rapids, Debbie Bills (Bill) of Cedar Rapids, Gary Brian Gable (Jill) of Boise, ID, Lisa Gable of Snohomish, WA, and Laura Gable Tufts (Joshua) of Seattle, WA.; and great-grandchildren, Brittany Ficken, Maddie Ficken, Sophie Ficken, Megan Bills, David Bills, Nick Gable, Britton Gable, Anna Gable, Brayden Ballman, Amalia Tufts, and Cade Tufts. She is also survived by her sister, Margaret Bohstedt of Williamsburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her siblings, Esther, Marie, Walter, Mabel, Carl, George, Henry, Florence and Ella.
Leah Wilhelmina Behrens was born May 25, 1912 in Deep River, Iowa, the daughter of William and Mary Rank Behrens. She graduated from Deep River High School in 1929 and received her teaching degree from Iowa State Teachers’ College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Erwin John Maas on August 3, 1933 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Victor. Minnie worked at Killian’s Department Store in Cedar Rapids as a clerk and model. She assisted her husband on the farm while raising her daughters. She later worked at Ben Franklin as a store clerk, and a secretary at Maas Real Estate and Schantz Basket and Broom Shop in West Amana.
Minnie was active in her community, always willing to help others. She served as a 4-H leader for 2 years, was treasurer of Ladies Aid at St. John’s in Homestead, and later was treasurer for St. Paul Ladies Guild in Williamsburg. She also was a reader to preschool children. Minnie enjoyed needlework, embroidering dresser scarves for relatives and friends, and made quilts, one for every grandchild. She enjoyed her friends and played bridge until a month prior to moving to the nursing home.
Mother was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who was strong in her faith and loving to many. She will be dearly missed by all. The family wishes to thank all of Minnie’s friends and the Highland Ridge staff for all the care and support given during her failing health.

Murray H. Longfellow, Jr., age 76 of Marengo, died Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Friday, July 26, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Matt German officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Thursday, July 25, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Murray is survived by his wife Charlotte; two sons, Robert of Cedar Rapids, and William and wife Lea of Alburnett; four grandchildren, Andrew Longfellow with the U.S. Navy in Japan, Gregory Longfellow (Stephanie) of Cedar Rapids, and Sarah and Rachel Longfellow of Alburnett. Also surviving are two sisters, Joyce Stewart of Vinton, and Mary Cejka (Bernie) of Hiawatha.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters in infancy, Charlotte Evelyn and Grace Delores, and a brother Edward L. in 2008.
Murray Harlen Longfellow, Jr. was born April 17, 1937 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Murray Harlen Longfellow and Grace VanVelkenburg Longfellow. He attended Edgewood School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the Keller schools, and Martinsville High School in Missouri. He served his country with the U.S. Army Reserves, being honorably discharged in 1962. Murray was united in marriage to Charlotte Jean Kasak on October 29, 1960 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. He farmed in Linn and Benton counties until 1981, then went to work at the printing plant in Marengo until his retirement in 2006. Murray enjoyed fishing, camping and woodworking. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his family, and his dog Chu Chu.

Morris A. Vols, age 90 of Grinnell, died Sunday, September 22, 2013 at the Grinnell Regional Hospital following an extended illness. Mass of Christian Burial is at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, September 26, 2013 at St. Patrick’s Church in Brooklyn, Iowa, with Father Brian Shepley officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn, Iowa. Visitation: 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, September 25, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. A memorial fund has been established.
Morris was born December 10, 1922 in Belle Plaine, Iowa, the son of Henry and Julia Van Lierde Vols. He attended Walnut Creek schools rural Chelsea. He married Louise Kaplan on January 31, 1948 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn, Iowa. He began farming in rural Belle Plaine. He then moved north of Brooklyn where he and Louise farmed the rest of their married lives until they retired and moved to Grinnell. Morris was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn and attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grinnell until his health prevented him from doing so. Morris loved his dog Rinney and playing checkers with family and friends.
He is survived by his four children, David (Marlene) Vols of Ankeny, Ronald Vols of Grinnell, Ilene Hagen of Knoxville, and Lilly (Armando) Sesma of Cedar Falls; his five grandchildren Cheryl Kalina of Cedar Falls, Christine (Jeff) Weiland of Van Meter, Brian (Andrea) Kalina of Detroit, Michigan, Brenda (Terry) McGuire of Urbandale and Kevin Hagen of Ankeny; his three great grandchildren Brianna and Alysa Hagen, and Aston Weiland.
Morris was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Louise in 2010, and his son in law Harold Hagen.

Margaret Marie Plagmann, age 89, of Grinnell, Iowa, died Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at Grinnell Regional Hospital. On Saturday, September 14, 2013 there will be visitation starting at 11:00 a.m. at Kloster Funeral Home, 298 W Washington St., Marengo, Iowa, followed by 12:00 Noon Graveside Services at the Marengo Cemetery, Marengo, Iowa. Reverend Kirsten Klepfer will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Grinnell Regional Hospice, Grinnell, Iowa.
Margaret was born July 24, 1924, in Lincoln Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Harlan James and Myra Hollingsworth Hillman. She attended Morgan Rural School and graduated from Deep River High School in 1941. She graduated from Coe College with a nursing degree in 1945. Margaret married Gale M. Plagmann on June 26, 1947. Margaret and Gale lived most of their married life in California, residing in Sunnyvale and Arroyo Grande. Margaret moved back to Iowa in 2000, after Gale passed away in 1997.
Margaret was a nurse for a number of years. She enjoyed sewing, tending her rose garden, knitting, quilting, baking and lapidary work, excelling in all of these. She was a member of the United Church of Deep River, Deep River, Iowa.
Margaret is survived by two sons: David of Grover Beach, California, and Tom of Nipomo, California; four grandchildren: Jennifer Varney, Maegann Plagmann, Dakota Plagmann, and Andrew Rusconi; and four great-grandchildren, all who live in California; a sister in-law, Virginia Hillman of Springfield, Missouri, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gale Plagmann; a sister, Virginia Pierce; and a brother, James Hillman.

Ralph Lewis Kahler, age 77 of Alamo, TX, formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Sunday, August 18, 2013 at his home in Middle Amana, Iowa. Memorial Services: 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 22, 2013, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Luzerne, Iowa, with Rev. Michael Musick officiating. Inurnment will be in Memory Gardens, Iowa City, at a later date. The family will receive friends at the church, one hour prior to the service on Thursday, August 22. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Ralph is survived by his wife Yvonne; two children, Randy Kahler and wife Julie of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Laurie Dvorak and husband Craig of Belvidere, Illinois; four grandchildren, Trevor Kahler (Carlie) of Liberty, MO, Ashley Dvorak of Belvidere, Trenton Kahler (Nikki) of Bellevue, NE, and Brock Dvorak of Belvidere; and a great-grandchild, Jude Kahler. Also surviving are his siblings, Alice Von Ahsen (Ivan) of Shellsburg, Kay Comried (Ray) of Marion, Jean Gallagher (Pat) of Cedar Rapids Ronnie Kahler (Linda) of Monticello; and Gerry Kahler Herr (Lee) of Amana, who he loved like a sister. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Russell, and a sister Eleanor Ealy.
Ralph Lewis Kahler was born October 5, 1935 in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Harry and Josephine Landuyt Kahler. He received his education in the Iowa county schools and served in the U.S. Army from 1952-54, stationed in Korea. Ralph married Yvonne Kober on October 10, 1959 in Iowa City, Iowa. He was employed for 33 years with Farmstead Foods in Cedar Rapids, as a lineman and a forklift operator.
Ralph was an avid Iowa football fan. He loved his country and flag. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially plants and flowers, and the animals too. Shuffleboard was a favorite pastime. Ralph’s highest priority was his family, and he loved to spend time with the kids, grandkids and the new great-grandchild. He was a loving and giving person, always helping others without hesitation.

Jeanetta M. Eggerling, age 100, of Williamsburg, died peacefully on Monday, August 12, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, August 19, 2013 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg, with Pastor Carl Cloeter officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Williamsburg. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 P.M. on Sunday, August 18, 2013 in the fellowship hall at St. Paul Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be contributed to St. Paul Lutheran Church. Kloster Funeral Home in Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Jeanetta is survived by a daughter Alice McCarthy (Leo) of Cedar Rapids; three sons, Donald (Glenda) of Ames, Arlen (Jan) of Pella and Arthur (Delores) of Delphi, IN; ten grandchildren: Allen Dvorak (Sarah), Randy Dvorak (Sheri), Kristin Eggerling (Paul Blomquist), Lara Eggerling (Yasu Kobayashi), Kari Eggerling (Bob Cappello), Jennifer Eggerling-Boeck (Paul), Leisa Michmershuizen (Joe), Karen Meinders (Joel), Kevin Eggerling (Jenny) and Suzette Lisowski (Mike); 24 great-grandchildren: Erika, Kaitlyn, Jacob, Sarah Beth, Katherine, Josef, Caleb, Soren, Finn, Shaw, Sen, Renan, Karise, Marijka, Metje, Mariel, Miriam, Lila, Sylvia, Theodore, Nickolas, Olin, Jay and Savannah; and three step-great-grandchildren: Leah, Aaron and Lauryn. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Donna Jean Beccard of Ft. Collins, CO and Ella Beccard of Syracuse, NE.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Herold; her sister Sylvia Eggerling; five brothers: Olin, Ralph, Vernon, Lyle and Lloyd Beccard; daughter-in-law Reverend Mary Eggerling; and son-in-law Henry Dvorak.
Jeanetta Marie was born March 29, 1913 in Paul, Nebraska, the daughter of Fred Beccard and Johanna Griepenstroh Beccard. She received her education in the Syracuse, Nebraska schools and married Herold H. Eggerling on January 8, 1936 in Syracuse. The couple moved to Williamsburg in July 1947. Herold died January 6, 2002.
Jeanetta was a devoted homemaker, wife and mother. She was employed as a seed technologist with Holden Foundation Seeds for over 50 years. She was involved in many aspects of seed research and was a dedicated and enthusiastic member of the Holden’s team. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Jeanetta loved her garden, especially her flowers, and always had plenty of blooms to enjoy.
